This is the worst skate rink I've ever been to! The floor is unfinished and in terrible condition. You'd think for how much they charge they could afford to at least take care of the one thing their business is based around. It was wayyy over crowded and they just kept letting people in. They make the slow people and beginners go in the middle and the fast skaters on the edge (backwards from every other skate rink ever) What this does is make all the children and people who don't know how to skate constantly block the path because they don't have a wall to hang onto and fall in the way. And because they don't know how to skate instead of working their way to the center by spiraling in as they skate they cut across in a straight line causing falls and traffic jams. It's really the stupidest set up for a crowded rink. They don't enforce that kids with the skate mates be in the center so they just meander and clog the path. It's hard to even just skate forward here. We arrived early so we're close to the front of the line and made it in 5 minutes before the session officially started. My boyfriend went to rent rollerblades and they didn't have any 10's or 11's???! We were there early and I can't imagine that many adults were there renting those sizes. He had to get 12's and when we walked all the way across the building and sat down to put our skates on we noticed she gave him 2 left skates. At some point they made everyone get off the floor and once everyone was off they waited like 2 minutes and said everyone could go back on? It felt like a waste of time and money. We left after less than an hour because it was so awful to be there and my boyfriends feet could take the size of the skates. I travel for work and have been to a number of rinks across the country, this is literally the WORST. Two thumbs down. read more

History. That's what makes this roller rink unlike any other. From the staff to the locals, this place was hopin' on Friday night. The rink itself was very clean - looks like they take pride is keeping it that way too! Choice of "regular" rental skates or roller blades - both of which seem to be maintained. The snack bar attendant was nice and helpful, as well. Food was what we expected - pizza, pretzels, sodas and Icees. Kiddos had a great time, which makes me very happy. Would we go back? Booked Great Skate for a private birthday party. The arcade games were run down and a lot of them were broken. The "DJ" only spoke into the microphone when a skater forgot their wrist guards. The pizza was edible because we were hungry. Everytime we needed something, we had to hunt down an employee. It seemed that we were nothing but a bother and there was only eleven of us. I would NOT recommend Great Skate to anyone. The place looks nothing like their website and the entire staff should be replaced with peoply that actually have a personality and want to work. I've been coming here every Monday when I can for about 2 years now. The only reason for that is because this is about the only roller rink in Phoenix that isn't so worn down despite parts of the rink itself having bumps or poorly done jobs at covering up holes. If you want a decent experience without having hordes of beginners and "skate mates" in your way I recommend going throughout the weekdays as they tend to have lower crowds. The music that the DJ plays is repetitive and gets old easily, only about 1-2 good songs are played every session while the rest of them are garbage and unnecessarily loud so, bring ear plugs or noise canceling earbuds if you don't want to risk hearing loss. If you're hungry while you're here, you're better off waiting until the session is over so you can go eat at an actual restaurant or at home. Their food is very low quality and over priced as hell so don't even bother. I'm sure some sort of health code is being violated too. Their arcade and Peter piper pizza ticket system isn't the greatest and half the machines don't work so, idk you tell me. Despite all the health violations and relative poor maintenance, The redeeming qualities of it is that it's pretty cheap if you just want a few hours to yourself to skate. I used to go here when I was a child and when I recently went it's like nothing has been changed! It's a perfect place for a family night. I recommend checking their Facebook for deals to save money on admission. Once inside I didn't realize it was cash only, at least at the skate rental. We rented a skate mate for $7 and it was worth it for our 5 year old. Our 2 year old got to use toddler skates and she loved them. She's a natural pro. It's also additional $3 to upgrade to in-line skates. Lockers are $.75 to use and every time you open them, they require $.75 more. Which can be a pain if you need to keep using the locker. They have themes throughout the day which our kids liked. Staff is friendly and bathrooms were clean. We didn't use any of the arcade games but personally I don't think this is the place to play them. Save your money and skip them. You will be plenty busy skating! The only reason I knocked a star off is for having to use cash inside and long lines to get change for the lockers. They have a machine which gives you quarters for your dollars but after one use it broke and was down for the rest of our session, if not the rest of the day. read more

Kids are out of control they need another employee on the floor. Kids are going the wrong way people were sitting on the floor and the poor small children had no guidance so they would go down the middle side to side and when they would fall some would just stay there it was pretty unsafe. I'm not sure if it was just the day I went (Saturday) because of the birthday party's and such but it was a weird experience. Skates are wayyyy over used and the wrist things felt like they were going to give me ring worm. But if I were to go back I think I'd have to take my own skates and wrist guards or at least Lysol. read more

We went on a discount day during the week. I haven't been here in a really long time. You have to sign a waiver now & you have to wear these weird hand guard things to skate. The only reason I gave them 3 stars is because of how annoying the upsales are. We were only there 2 hours. There is this guy that walks around selling things every 10 mins. So freaking annoying! No I don't want flow in the dark anything. No I don't want extra snacks. No I don't want anything extra! They have these pvc things to help the little kids learn to skate. Place is fun for kids. However Serenity needs a full employee evaluation. Not only did she refuse to make food we ordered and paid for but continued to give dirty looks and rude comments to her own co workers when they asked her to make it. Blatantly refused and would walk away. 45 mins for simple Cotton candy due to a rude employee is ridiculous and leaves a horrible impression on the business. Shout out to employee Carlos for stepping in apologizing for his rude co worker and making amazing cotton candy. read more

Went to adult skate night and I gotta say I was not impressed. The DJ seemed to only play the same type of music. And when he said he was taking requests, he said my request "was a different tempo" even though it was basically the same beat. How can you call yourself a DJ and not be able to mix different tempos? It seemed to me he was only taking requests from certain people. Not a wide variety of music. And people on the outer part of the rink were rude and knocked people down if you got in their way. So me and some friends went in for my best friends birthday last night. I thought it was going to be so fun. But the staff were rude except 2 of them. Great skate is not for beginners let me say. My friends were all getting trampled and ran into by the other skaters that were going really fast. They were also forcing people who didn't know how to skate go in the middle and when they wanted to get out they had to wait and see when they can go through and not get ran over by other people skating. This is a great place to plan an event for your child's party. We took our daughter who just turned 13 here for her birthday and it was a great experience. She got to pick her birthday song and had a choice for them to announce her BD through the microphone with her friends cheering her on. The price was also reasonable for the package we selected with unlimited drinks. We were able to bring our own skates for those who had them and home made brownies too! They also provided a free pass for her to return for 4 future visits and a 400 ticket voucher. Only thing is most kids don't know how to skate anymore thanks to the age of electronics. We had to rent several of the skate guides to give them an opportunity to skate with the kids who could skate. Overall I would definitely go back here and highly recommend it. I took my 12 yr old daughter and her friend on October 12, last Thursday. The girls had a good time, we all liked the music. The admission was reasonably priced, the food, although expensive was good. I was also impressed with the friendliness of the counter person where I paid to go in. His name was Noah, he smiled often. Later, I told him that I was going to step outside to get my lotion from my car. I was in the process of asking if i needed a stamp to get back in when he assured me that he would remember me. The reason I'm putting one star is because never in my entire life you have to be 18 and older to skate around 8pm-10:30pm. I've been going to Great Skate for years and never had a problem with my age. I'm 17 years old and for you to be able to skate you have to have a parent OLDER than 25 if you are 17 years old and younger. Amazing experience. The staff is very friendly. I went with a group of friends and got amazing service by our staff member, he was so kind and even stayed to sing happy birthday to my friend with us! I think the only problem I had was the wrist guards I got didn't have Velcro on one of them. Luckily they gave me a new pair and those were good. Also, most of the games are broken, and most don't have signs that they are, I tried playing something, wasting money to have nothing work. The food is amazing. Overall would highly recommend! The songs are appropriate for everyone and I personally think the lights made it a lot better. I like that it has a certain time to start and close, you will get very tired and sweaty if you don't do it all the time, so being there for a few hours is perfect! Honestly recommend just to skate as I said before, some of the games are broken. It is also really fun to skate once you get the hang of it. If you fall, a ref on the court will most likely be at your side to help you up. read more

Came for a fun afternoon with family only to be wildly disappointed by the staff. Took more than 30 minutes to get a single slice of pizza. When I went up to pick up they tried to hand me the wrong order. When I told them we ordered pizza they were extremely rude and condescending to me. As I was walking away there happened to be a manager standing there so I let her know how rude the staff was, she walked to the back of the snack bar and came back out with the correct order and commenced to tell me that my wife ordered the wrong food, essentially calling her a liar. They did refund the meal purchase but I suspect the behavior of the employees was never addressed. Took an hour to get in, get skates & wrist braces. The way they have the front set up to pay admission is ridiculous. The skates were not put away from the session before. The wrist braces were all messed up and they were handing out 2 rights or 2 lefts. They had no one busing or cleaning the tables. We sat with other people's trash and food in front of us for 3 hrs. Awesome skating rink! I have a 7&9 year old. I wanted to teach them to skate. This was a wonderful bonding experience. Great Skate is a well run rink. The snacks are tasty the DJ sis awesome there are lots of activities on the rink that everyone enjoys. I was most surprised by the staff. Usually when a lot of young people run a business you get attitude and bad service. I've been here 4 different occasions and have always found staff is smiling, helpful and VERY polite. You won't regret a family night here. It takes us 40 minutes to get here but I'd drive double the distance if I had to! read more

Last Saturday night I got my skate on.... (Before going out to indulge in more "adult" good times) I had a fucking blast and have decided that next time I go, EVERYONE I know is going with me. YES, that means YOU! My date picked me up around 9ish and immediately made reference to the size of my "huevos" for wearing a "red rag" into the 623. (Like anyone's going to believe a 32 yr old white girl at a skating rink is a gang banger). He was joking obviously.... called me 2Pac all night...it was cute, whatever. Upon arrival I noticed that indeed, it is pretty street in there. No biggie, I grew up in Tucson where our skate rink was filled with cholos and meth heads. I don't judge, I high five. One thing was annoying... .75cents for a locker, and only half of them worked. The .75 thing didn't bother me, the fact that they weren't marked so you just kept throwing more quarters in there and hoping for the best, did. We strapped on our skates and took off. I haven't been in many years so it took me a few minutes to get comfortable. I can proudly say that I only fell once and it wasn't my fault..... what I can not proudly say is that I ended up on top of a 13yr old boy ...and from the very loud "OWWWUCH" that came out of him I'm pretty sure I punched him in the balls. The look on his face was sheer horror. (I still can't stop laughing about it). My date was pretty fancy on his feet..... I half expected people to profess undying love to him and call out his name as we left. (one dood kinda did) All in all, one of the most fun filled evenings that I've had in a long time. Spit your gum out before you enter. Be prepared to get frisked. Bring .50$ for the locker. And forgo all fear and enjoy yourself. Yes, it's swarming with young 'uns on Saturday night, but don't let them whizzing by you, showing you up, discourage you from letting your inner child come out to play. In fact, laugh much, laugh hard and don't be afraid of falling. I fell once, taking my date down with me. Ha! It was the highlight of my skating experience. So funny. I wasn't sure what to expect, but Great Skate is alot of fun. If you aren't pro enough to skate backwards or play the games, just watch. It's fun, too. I recommend this place and roller skating for when you need to break away from reality and just enjoy yourself. I give this place only 3 stars because it's not in the greatest neighborhood (hence security measures) and you have to be ready for a bunch of kids running around and, well, being kids. I went to Great Skate and paid way too much to get in only to get slammed by a guy skating like he was in a roller derby five minutes after I put my skates on. NOT ONE STAFF MEMBER HELPED ME!! The kids skating helped me get off the floor. They helped me get ice. The staff walked by like I didn't matter. They didn't even help me get out the door. My daughter had to be my crutch. My knee swelled up to the size of a grapefruit and I had to go to the ER. I had a hairline fracture! When I called to talk to a manager about making rules to not race skating? They blew me off. They even threw in a free lesson at 9am before his party which helped tremendously. The package I ordered (which was basic & very affordable more may be included with other packages that cost more I don't know). Included pizza, drinks, tokens, wheel of fortune spin, personalized song dedication by DJ with all kids getting a trip to the soundbooth, plenty of announcements over the loudspeakers for his birthday, when they were eating cake, etc. Our server Vince informed us that he was 'newer'. However, I never would've known. He was extremely well spoken, professional, informed me at every chance of what was going on & what the timeline was of the party, any needs I had & did I have any questions. We have had parties at the park, at Peter Piper's, etc. I will never do that again. We will have our parties here, unless we are out of state, which happens sometimes. The manager Rodney was so patient, helpful & organized. When one of the children fell, we were met immediately with a skate referee to help us off the rink & asked if we needed first aid or ice. I am seriously blown away by the affordability of this place with all the extras included, the great music, the instructors & the cleanliness of the facility. I really hope it stays this way, sometimes places like this slowly decline in quality so I am reaching out to the Manager Rodney in this post - make sure to maintain your consistency, customer service & quality & you have a loyal family here! My number 1 thing I hate about great skate is how unbelievably horrible their floor is. It has rough patches EVERYWHERE and their floor needs not just to be recoated but also to be torn out and new concrete poured. Chandler Skateland and Mesa Skateland have MUCH better floors despite being owned by the same company which is called United Skates of America. Number 2 is that the lights are very poor and the floorguards don't do their jobs which is unfortunately common in roller skating rinks. Obviously you are going to get the poor and unclean atmosphere of a roller skating rink so I wouldn't count that as much of a bad thing as you will only come here to skate anyway. Number 3 would be that they only had 1 line open with more than 50 people outside and it took forever to get inside. The ONLY good thing about Great Skate is that their floor is huge compared to Mesa and Chandler Skateland but that ONLY good thing doesn't mean anything when the floor is that bad. I read the other reviews on Great Skate after I skated there and had this experience and the other bad reviews seemed spot on. If you want a better skating experience, go to Mesa or Chandler skateland. Mesa being the best floor and a decent size, Chandler being a fine floor and smaller size. I just wish their floor wasn't so bad and from a real skaters standpoint this place is just bad all around. Maybe for birthday parties it would be ok but for actual skating I think not. The only saving grace to this review is that they have good special events like advanced rhythm skate and adult nights that the other places just don't have. read more

So, I took my BFF skating yesterday for an early birthday outing. We were both pretty nervous as it's been since my senior year in HS and for her since middle school. I felt like a newborn calf for about 10 min, and then before I knew it, was speeding around like nobody's biz-naz! Forgot how fun skating is! So, I fell once. Concrete doesn't feel good on your tailbone. Plus fell on my wrist as I didn't want to re-injur my ACL injury to R knee. Whew! My pride was crushed more than anything... ;) Yes, there were a ba-jillion kiddie bday parties, but if you can maneuver thru the sea of little ppl and parents being their crutch, it's also fun for adults. Music was so-so. I didn't like the 3 seconds of total blackness either - that's a little dangerous! Didn't try the food from the snack bar. Just didn't sound appealing. It also smelled like a dirty foot crossed w/a stale bag of salty popcorn. read more

We recently celebrated my daughters 5th birthday at Great Skate. All the kids...and adults as a matter of fact had a blast. We would like to especially thank Joseph, our hostess with the mostest! He was amazing and kept the party going without me having to lift a finger. Thank you Joseph for your professionalism and for keeping my kids entertained! 2 Thumbs up for you!! Now the reason for the 4 star instead of 5 was the food...we didn't get to have our platters of nachos that came with our VIP package and the pizza was wasted simply because the kids had 2 huge slices on their plates (part of the package) which they barely finished one. Maybe instead of putting slices on plates, just leave the slices on the trays. Just an idea. The taste of the food...it was just ok. We will be coming back, though...for sure!
