I was looking for something fun to do with friends…read morefor an evening and never got around to going to a bout in the Midwest before I moved out here (the local team there was/is good, never got around to going). Luckily for Phoenix there are 2 great "professional" orgs for roller derby and AZRD is one of them! The space they play in is great - it's a conveniently-located gym close to DTPHX they convert with tape for flat track roller derby. We found it quite interesting that people are on-call at all times around the gym with rolls of different colors of tape in case it comes off during a bout. It's also affordable - no more than $10/15 for an adult, and normally the bouts go for a few hours. You definitely get your money's worth. The only downfall was the night we came they actually ran out of beer (a lot of local brews), and somehow the AZRD team came back with more beer, but the standard cheap stuff. Power to them to sell that. You can tell that the girls really put their heart and soul into roller derby. The night we attended, one longtime skater played in her last bout before moving away and you could tell everyone was tearing up as the bouts ended and she got her final curtain call. While one team was competing, another was out in the stands trying to fundraise for the nationals trip their All-Star team takes. A couple of them were kind to explain how the bouts work, and they had some neat handouts we borrowed to explain the plays, the players, etc. Props to the AZRD for what they do!

They are a member of the "Women's Flat Track Derby Association". So if you saw the "Roller girls" series on TV, it's not quite like that as it's all flat - not raised up on the outside. The biggest advantage here is that it's much easier for them to find a space to both practice and perform. There are 4 teams in the league, and they all have great names - and super fun outfits that "match" their name. Example, we love the Surly Gurlies - and they are all pirate costumes. And most of those include fishnets. Did that get anyone's attention? Yea, they have to use a bit of sex to initially get the butts in the seats, but after watching one of their bouts, most folks are ready to go again just for the action. And this isn't like the fake stuff you saw on TV years ago. This is totally real un-choreographed stuff. And if you want to join, as long as you have your own insurance and a pair of skates - you're welcome to join their "Smash Squad" to learn the ropes until you're good enough to be picked up by one of the teams. It's really a great time. Energy is always high and it's a great chance to yell and scream like a fool too. If you want to - not required of course. The only negative has been their announcers. They had some good ones a few times, but often we can't hear what in the heck they are saying. Maybe one day they'll be able to afford a PA system we can understand. Final Bonus - There's always a live band to play between each of their sets. This could be rock, bunk, ska, rockabilly or something else wonderful and amazing. And occasionally loud. There are usually ear plugs available at the door for their indoor bouts. Take them up on it. Trust me.

I…read morewon't get into the actual Great Skate skating experience, as that I'll leave up to the grandchildren to review if they feel like they want to. I'm giving Great Skate the second star because Great Skate at least refunded 2 of the 3 grandchildren's fees since 2 of the 3 refused to skate once getting past the Great Skate entrance and seeing what it was like inside. I was there just to bring the kids. I did not skate; I was just 1) a Great Skate spectator, 2) the source of payment to Great Skate and 3) to be responsibile for the kids while they were visiting Great Skate. Nonetheless, I had to sign a Great Skate waiver and I was not allowed to sign the Great Skate waiver without providing an email address. I was more than willing to sign the Great Skate waiver, provide a driver's license, provide my passport, give fingerprints, whatever to just to get inside of Great Skate. But, because the Great Skate waiver is online I could not progress thru the Great Skate waiver without me first forking over my email address. Otherwise, I would be denied the ability to be responsible for the kids. Rather than wait outside the doors of Great Skate while the kids went in by themselves, I gave up my email address . . . just to sit on a bench and watch. Yep, now I'm getting spammed with a relentless barrage of Great Skate email solicitations. They are not about a good CX, just generating more revenue, bolstering the Great Skate spam list and managing data via a rigid Great Skate platform.

I came here for adult skate night with a girlfriend and absolutely enjoyed myself thoroughly! Adult night is really fun, with most people knowing how to skate (nothing wrong with people who are beginners), which made it a lot easier to gauge how others would behave on the wooden rink floor. Music was old school hip hop with a real good DJ and had me bopping and dancing along while we skated! I also loved the dimmed lights and strobe lights, which gave it a club like vibe instead of like in a classroom. I got in two hours of skating, and called it a night. Next time, hopefully, I'll stay for longer as adult skate is 3 hours! Admission was $14 and with tax, a little over $15. Rentals cost more but I dont know how much as I own my own skates. Great way to get your body moving, dance to some good beats, hang out with my gitlfriend and an all around good way to spend an evening! You know I'm gonna be back here again, just like when I was a kid. Gonna also take some lessons to improve my backwards skating and hopefully gain more skills for some fancy footwork on the floor!

While visiting family in Phoenix for New Year's, my 3 year old wanted to ice skate! Found this…read moresmall outdoor ice skating ring in downtown Mesa. There is a small parking lot behind the skating ring. Parking was free. We visited on 12/30/23. I purchased tickets the day before, which I highly recommend. Tickets were $10/person. Upon arrival, they had a stand by line and a pre-purchased ticket line. There were a lot of people waiting in standby, as tickets for this day were sold out. Tickets are only needed for ice skating. There is lots of room for family/friends to watch and hangout while you skate. After checking in, we were given tickets that we exchanged for skates. They only had hockey style skates. Note, the small size skate is an 8T (toddler). So if your toddler has a smaller foot they give them foot skates, which attach to the bottom of kid shoes. There was plenty of seating to sit and put shoes on. We went with family so they held onto our shoes, otherwise you would have to rent a locker to keep items in. Next to the skate checkout stand were ice skating assists (plastic walkers for young kids, see pic). These were an additional $5 to rent, WORTH IT! There were several employees constantly brushing the ice. On this particular day the sun was warm and the ice was melting a bit, so they had to keep brushing the water, but this didn't interfere with our skating. We enjoyed the ice skating. Cheap and fun family outing. There was an AT&T pop up tent nearby so we checked out the booth where my kids got to jump in the snow globe! So fun! There was one dessert food truck also, and I saw online that they had other trucks coming and other fun events. Definitely worth checking out!

Because it doesn't snow in the Valley, these little makeshift rinks are the way to go in Arizona. For awhile, CitySkate was located on Central Ave and could hold quite a few people. But because of the light rail extension construction, it got moved to the CityScape plaza area. This has made the ice skating rink smaller and more crowded. So I haven't been in quite some time because of this. CitySkate usually opens around Thanksgiving weekend and stays open until after the New Year. General admission prices are close to $20. Kids, seniors and military are a little cheaper. There is a Christmas Tree in the center of the rink that you can skate around. This is a fun option for families during the holidays if it isn't too crowded.

I do like that there is plenty of equipment and even a side for the smaller kiddos so they don't get trampled by the bigger kiddos. It's that simple You say this limits forfeits which is a lame excuse considering you actually have a pretty decent sub system. Having a large team is not accommodating the group of three, it's just a way to have more players in the league to make more money. Go to a game and watch. Tell me sitting on the sideline is fun. Once again. Go somewhere else. Better leagues for half the price.

Cutting everyones playing time in half. Then when questioned, they were unwilling to spread out the free agents to all of the other teams as if the teams are set in stone before the season even starts.
