I've been to Great Harvest several times now, and have tried a small variety of their baked goods. Most of the things I've had- cookies, scones, and muffins have been very good! I'm very excited to have my scone from their February menu (strawberry cream) for breakfast tomorrow morning!! Their breads are quite dense/heavy and dry, so that product I'm not recommending, but otherwise their stuff is tasty. The service is friendly and helpful, too. The only drawbacks are that their parking lot is very small and awkward, and even the area inside where customers stand to look and order is small and cramped. They also close mid-afternoon, which can make it difficult to get there sometimes. read more

I briefly stopped in today after looking up bakeries in my area on Yelp and while they don't carry what I was looking for -- a good loaf of sourdough bread -- what I can say is I really liked the vibe. When you walk in, you instantly see the racks of freshly baked bread behind the counter and they had everything from country white to wheat to baguettes (basically everything but what I was on the hunt for). It's also worth noting that I clocked some pastries as well so this could be a good go-to place for a coffee and a little snack. That said, It's an intimate store so I can imagine that it can get packed on weekends and I didn't really see anywhere to sit; if there is seating, it's definitely limited. The staff seemed nice enough during my brief interaction with them; it would have been nice if they made a recommendation of where to go for what I was looking for or made a suggestion of something in house that was remotely similar to retain me as a potential customer, but I'm not totally turned off and may come here again now that I have a better grasp of what they carry. read more

Bottom Line: A charming specialty bread and baked good shop with friendly staff. I visited Great Harvest Bread in mid-March and it was instant love. Great Harvest is a feast for the eyes. So many beautiful loaves that reminded me of being in a fancy schmancy bakery in Napa and Sonoma. It was fun to see the bakers working away too. And as if beautiful bread isn't good enough, the staff was very friendly and offered me samples. I think I went to Great Harvest Bread out of curiosity but I left with rustic loaves, monkey bead, a cookie and a scone. And I returned the next weekend for more of the same. First time being here and 2 extremely nice women invited us for a taste test before ordering, which hit the spot and made us purchase more than what we came in for! We were looking for a great dense bread to hold up to the md crab soup we are making. We found the Tuscan bread which we tried and is rich and savory! We ended up leaving with a apple pie bread too, cinnamon and sugar were the sweetness perfect in this bread. Not bad at all! The breads are baked fresh daily and it always smells heavenly inside. My favorites are the white bread, the monster cookies and all of their cookies! Not too fond of the muffins, some dry some bland. Same with the scones, they're dense. I also enjoyed the vanilla bread and one with berries in it. This is my go-to spot for Christmas goodies! Was so excited to go here being I used to go to the Alexandria location a lot decades ago. Well, suffice to say, I will NOT be returning. Dry greeting as my mom and I walked in, no offer to assist or explain their availability of breads, etc. We bought Challah bread, a vanilla roll (which felt stale), an apple muffin, cinnamon sugar sticks, and soup mix. I got the fiber 5 loaf and was extremely impressed and satisfied! The overall flavor was nutty and savory, with a hint of sweetness from the honey. The wholeness of the bread also tasted very pure and natural. I highly recommend purchasing this bread over traditional bread on the shelves of the grocery store! The shop is also very cute! They have a lot of Brochures and flyers about how to best use their breads, and offer recipes. Great Little mom and pop place!! I smoked 80lbs of pulled pork for an event and needed a nicer quality roll then I've used in the past. Pam not only fulfilled my order for 300 rolls in (2) days, I let her pick what she felt I should use. She made these amazing sweet mini rolls which were a huge hit! I'm not sure what had happened to the Annapolis Great Harvest I used to love stopping in to pick up a scone or a sweet treat, and always ordered my rolls for holidays. It has been very disappointing to say the least. Half of the times that I have stopped in they were closed for one reason or another. They would not allow pre-orders for the holidays unless you purchased five items. Back when Pam owned the store you were always greeted with a smile and you could never just walk in and pick up rolls for the holidays because they were sold out. Stopped in today to find out they're only going to be open 4 days a week and it was like a ghost town in the store. I just hope it improves. I always go there hungry. :) So to my surprise "Wow", what a group of disinterested employees I walked in on (June 3rd, 9:45am). I think the individual at the counter was relieved when I said I wanted to first look at what was available so she could go back to making the coffee. Not as much bread available. What was on the shelves seemed haphazard and not well marked (if at all). Nothing on the chalk-boards above. So rather than rely on a Staff member who had other priorities, I politely said 'good day' and walked out with nothing. Its just a get what you want and go type of place but what they have is amazing. Tons of different breads, scones, muffins and other treats and it seems to change daily. The first day I went, I had the caramel apple scone-amazing. There is a rotating selection of breads each day with honey whole wheat, old-fashioned white and challah (so fluffy and delicious) offered each day. "Nearly Gluten-Free" bread in three flavors is featured every Wednesday, and in October, there is mulitgrain low-carb bread on Friday (if you're so inclined). Try any of the pumpkin varieties this month--you will not be disappointed. I visited on Monday to purchase two loaves for gifts. The cinnamon chip white bread was amazing--like a cinnamon roll but without the heavy, super-sugary taste. Additionally, Great Harvest offers free gift packaging with any purchase. I shop here occasionally out of guilt, often for a gift or when company is coming. Why guilt? Well, I also drop in for coffee and for about $1.58 and get a 'grande" portion off local Cafe Pronto java, AND a sample (hand size) of today's hot fresh offerings. Awesome coffee and breakfast for $1.58? Beat that! I tip the change so it's two green backs and I am good to go, for lunch. My favorites here beside the staff, are the pizza bread, dinner rolls and the Italian herb bread. At holiday time there are some awesome ones too, but can't remember now. My favorite Ham and Cheese Scone is gone due to the Anne Arundel Health Department. The county insisted they he held hot or cold, despite the wee few hours they were on the rack. I can't imagine salted ham in a dry scone would culture a damn thing, but government knows best. NOT ! PS Quick breads only. For the hard stuff, you have no options in this town. Sorry. read more

I never liked the other Great Harvest Bread Companies that I've been too! But that was because they were cold and boring, never offered me any samples to taste or special deals. This one had me fooled! I didn't think they were a chain. It's a cute little place by West Annapolis and doesn't look at all like the other stores across the nation. Their ovens and countertops are right there in plain sight and all the cooling racks are behind the counter. I got this amazing coupon deal, $14 for a picnic basket which is worth $28 normal price. I picked the cinnamon chip bread- a hefty loaf and GREAT for making french toast. Whipped honey butter that comes with a spreader, trail mix, a huge pack of oatmeal cranberry cookies (oh man to die for and perfect for my friend who hates raisins). They let me sample- that's how they get you hooked. I had to bring my friend back the same day. It was like a museum and she was jealous I had this awesome experience without her. We got the cinnamon chip bread stick that is just like the loaf except it has rock sugar on the outside. It's supposed to be a good "after-school snack" the sign says. Are you kidding me? This will make kids fatty and on a sugar high if they eat this everyday! But as a treat, yes it's heavenly. That and the pepperoni roll... doesn't have a ton of pepperoni but it is full of flavor. Even though this is a franchise I like to remind people that the franchise portion is the quality of what used and the recipes that are suggested. I got a loaf of pecan log bread with cinnamon butter which was fantastic. Pepper parmesian bread was pretty awesome as well to go with our pasta dish. Service was very friendly and gave whole slices of bread. I wouldn't recommend coffee from this place but for a quick need to go its acceptable. It's places like this that don't help with carb-free diets. The bread is amazing here! I love the unique varieties that they have everyday. Whether you are looking for savory or sweet, you can't go wrong with a loaf from this place. Depending on the bread, if you ask nicely they can slice it for you. One of my recent favorites is the Spinach Cheese scone. Who makes spinach scones??? This place does and it was amazing! They are open early in the morning and have small bread snacks and coffee from Cafe Pronto so you can carb overload before heading into work. It is a bit out of the way, but not far from the Rowe Blvd exit on 50. It's a worth a stop if you LOVE bread. They have a frequent buyer program that I have yet to utilize. I don't buy enough loaves from this place but other people may benefit from this. The loaves are definitely more for what you pay at the grocery store, but they are fresh and unique and worth the price. read more

The samples get me every time! The staff is so patient while a take 20 minutes to decide what to get. Here's what I chose this time: -Cinnamon raisin bread-this makes amazing French toast. Seriously, drool worthy. -Raspberry, white chocolate scones-my husband loved these and do did his coworkers. -Chicken Enchilada soup mix-no salt and all natural. It came with free rolls! I haven't tried it yet but it sounds and looks amazing. -Juice Box-my son was thrilled and content while I browsed. Everything here is so fresh and worth the trip. This business is truly all heart. My mom and I stumbled upon this bakery by pure accident last month and we are so grateful we did. My mom is pretty ill and her appetite has been non existent. She walked into Great Harvest and fell in love with their quality baked goods and staff. They were so gracious and kept offering different samples for her to try. As I live in CA and my mom (who lives in MD) is not able to drive, I called to see if they had a delivery service. They did not, but after hearing about our circumstance Luke did not hesitate to offer to deliver it himself after work. His incredible generosity and kindness truly humbled us. Due to his thoughtfulness, my mother was able to fuel up to prepare for her next round of treatments with more energy. Their baked goods keep very well in the freezer as well and has been a lifesaver. My mom takes a muffin to each of her treatments and it makes her very happy. Great Harvest is the "white bread" of, um, bakeries in Annapolis. I walked in hoping for a fresh sourdough loaf, but was disappointed to learn that they mostly bake white breads. So if that's your thing, you're in luck. Most varieties come in both round and sandwich-shaped loaf formats, and slicing is offered free of charge. While the darker, more whole-grained types are outnumbered five-to-one, they generously offer sample slices of their daily favorites. In conclusion, this place has a lot of white bread.
