The Union Railroad Depot in North Cannan is a cool building that houses other shops and the brewery. I did spy an accordion shop next door if you have one that you're looking to get tuned up. I highly recommend the Double Luminosity, a hazy double IPA that is fruity but not that heavy. There is a cozy couch and lounge chair area with a fireplace in addition to the bar and table to sit with friends, which as you get older you appreciate. They also have food trucks on occasion and a calendar of events posted on their website. You're always welcome to bring takeout from local restaurants with you too. read more

The tap list includes a range of beers and seasonal offerings, plus guest-starring wines and ciders. My first time having Sunset Meadow happened to be in this former train station next door to an accordions sale. Why not? I don't know when it was decided that breweries had to be reused spaces but this reused space is of course adorable, and pub games and darts are included. If you're too hurried to stay and enjoy the atmosphere, they have you covered with a cold case full of cans to go and other yummy treats. Great Falls has great beer and they support great causes! I was all the way up here for a 5K race early on a Saturday morning. Great Falls was one of the race sponsors helping to raise money for a women's support group (apologies for not remembering the name of the group). The brewery hosted the race awards and offered all racers a free beer, in addition to a 10% off coupon. They also provided the prizes! Beautiful flowers and plants for Mother's Day weekend and the Mother's Day race, as well as beer gift cards! Something for every type of "mother." Huge plus for supporting community and causes! Everyone who raced and stuck around for the post-award gathering was a winner! The place is spacious with a cool bar, small patio, games, and a cool lodge feel and vibe. Their beer is delicious. I have seen kegs on tap here and there in spots around Connecticut (usually tapped), but I finally got it straight from the source. Lots of beers to select from. I did a post-run sampler, which included a white chocolate raspberry cheesecake sour, a chocolate Doppelbock, a New England IPA, and a cookies and cream stout. I wish I could have stayed longer, but did take plenty of cans home to share! Generous group, delicious beer, and the owner spent a lot of his childhood in Chester, my town. Great Falls Brewing Company is a craft brewery that opened in Canaan, Connecticut in December 2018. It was founded by Chris Tripler and his business partners. Tripler is an Associate Professor at Endicott College in Beverly, Massachusetts, but he has been home-brewing since 1993. Launching a brewery was a turning point in his life. He chose the name 'Great Falls' after a waterfall formed along the Housatonic River in the nearby village of Falls Village. Tripler and his wife were married at the falls. The location chosen to house the brewery was the historic Canaan Union Station Railroad Depot. The building was constructed in 1872 as a joint effort between the Housatonic and Connecticut Western Railroads. Passenger service discontinued in 1971, and freight service continued until the station was completely shut down in 1974. In October 2001, the building was almost completely destroyed by arson. It underwent a major renovation process before the doors opened again in 2018. I first visited Great Falls Brewing in August 2019. I love all things related to trains and historic railroads, so I absolutely loved the location. Tripler and his team did a fantastic job restoring the space. I especially love how they honored the history of the building and integrated several historic railroad artifacts in the design of the taproom. The sign for the brewery even hangs on a historic railroad signal. Conveniently located next to the brewery is a non-profit museum (Open on Saturdays) that houses several artifacts connected to the history of the station. I took a look around in the museum in between beers and I really enjoyed it. Lots of cool old railroad artifacts! As for the beer, I started off with a sampler flight of four: Strawberry Basil Limeade Gose, Cascadia Farewell (IPA), Lazy Hazy Housy (New England IPA), and Mere Morsel of Delicious Power! (Imperial Stout). The gose was very tart and refreshing, the IPA was a great hop medley, the New England IPA had nice mandarin orange notes, and the stout had some hints of bold coffee. Before leaving, I had a full pour of Happy Camper S'mores Stout. This stout is brewed with cocoa nibs, marshmallow fluff and graham crackers. It tasted just like s'mores and they even garnish the glass with a freshly toasted marshmallow. This beer was my favorite of the whole visit; I purchased a crowler of it to take home. I really enjoyed my visit to Great Falls Brewing! I don't make it to the northwest corner of Connecticut often, but I'll definitely be stopping at the brewery again when I do. read more

This brewery used to be an old railroad station! They have so many good beers on tap. We did a couple beer flights but my favorite was their raspberry wheat type beer. Lots of games available to play while you're there. Friendly bartenders too! read more

'Great' brewery! Went in for a quick beer just to give it a shot. Ended up 'falling' in love with the Triple NEIPA #11 on the current menu. Sampled 4 of the NEIPA's plus the Blackberry Fruited Ale, quite good as well. The pourer was so very nice : ) The only knock was the Drunk Alpaca pretzel mix. You buy it in a little bag... it was just a bit stale is all. I would definitely head over for a Triple, some darts, and some great service. read more

I would love to 5 this place. Definitely a comfortable vibe loved by the locals as evident by the large number of mug club members. Beer was also pretty cool quality with a wide variety. My only issue was that the van selection was not fresh. I visited the first week in February and out of all Of the cans only one selection was made in 2023. Some if the ipas were Nearly six months old and most ipas quality begins to drop before then. All in all a good brewery though that I would recommend If you're in the area. read more

Great Falls is the place to be! AMAZING brews and friendly staff, there's nothing not to love here. The vibe inside is fun and vibrant- there's plenty of seating: low tables, high tops, couches, not to mention board games, darts, and a little menu of local snacks like truffled chips and charcuterie. In addition, the deck is dog-friendly, and there are plenty of seats and spots to enjoy a drink. The beers are really fantastic. They have flights of 4, and larger pours too. Top favorites include the Blackberry Ale- almost like a sour but milder and light, great summer beer, the Lazy Hazy Houzy and the mango IPA. People love the "jelly donut," a sour, and very good. My husband loves the Housacronic, a triple IPA. You can't go wrong. Seriously, try them all because you won't regret it. Can't wait to come back again and soak up the sunshine on the deck and some great brews! Also- they do lots of events here including live music and trivia. Cheers to a great new business in my hometown! Some beer is just what the doctor ordered! A while in the making, Great Falls Brewing Company finally debuted in the town's depot in December - it's been a long recovery since it burned down back in 2001, which I remember well from my senior year of high school! - and it's obvious that the townspeople - as well as those from out of town - as excited for this unique spot. With well over a dozen of their house-brewed beers on draft, hard cider from the local King's Highway Cider, wines from Land of Nod Winery in East Canaan, their own housemade Fire House Root Beer, and soft drinks and tea from Harneys, they have a drink for everyone! Those that know me and / or follow my reviews know that I can't drink beer - damn my Brewer's Yeast allergy! - but I was able to enjoy a nice glass of red wine AND a root beer upon my visit; the cider was popular and GONE by the time I got there! Ahhhh, next time! King's Highway is a wonderful cidery and I'm glad they're associated with this spot. Though they don't have food available for order, the local food businesses are happy to feed the masses! You can bring food in, and G.F.B.C. has menus available from local restaurants such as Roma's, Zia Maria, Old School Deli, and more. They also have plenty of games to play, be it card games, board games, or darts! A good craft brew brings people together - let's be honest, craft beer love is close to its zenith right now - and I see a long wonderful relationship between Canaan & G.F.B.C. We love this new local brewery! Very friendly service and they have a great mix of indoor and outdoor seating. They usually have one or two foodtrucks on the weekends, and you can also bring in food from other local businesses. Great place to hang out. Great Falls Brewing is located in quaint Canaan, CT at a charming location (Canaan Train station which is still somewhat operational) in the center of town. They are new and just opened but still have a wide selection of IPA, stouts, ales, sours, etc. Their master brewer has brought some west coast flavor to the east coast. I sampled many that were on tap when I visited and my favorites were the "no name sour" and the "lazy headed pale ale", of which I took home a crowler of each. Crowler is a 32 oz can that they can prepare for you right at the bar to take home, not a typo for growler. The setting is spacious and there was room for live music, as they had at the grand opening. The dart board still smells of my victory over Alex and Dan in a rousing game of cricket. When the weather improves, the outdoor porch area will be great for a relaxing summer night in CT sipping on a fine adult beverage, but for those braver there are warmers out there in the winter. Additionally they plan on using the upstairs for special events upon request. They have a handful of restaurants for take out pretty close and currently offer small snacks like a charcuterie board. I believe the plan is to expand upon their internal menu later, but for now focusing on the beer! The owners were very personable and excited about their new endeavor. They took us on a mini tour of the facility, showing us where and how they do things and giving us a sample of some beers that weren't on tap yet. They are excited to keep creating new beers as time goes on. Hoping I can get some in stores near me soon, as I am not from the area. There are hotels within shouting distance if you feel like staying over after a more lubricated night, but if you're looking for a day trip to a brewery that is fun and filled with good selection and a great setting, great falls is the place for you! read more

I am from Falls Village, CT, but currently live in San Diego, which is arguably the micro-brew capital of the US. Beers at Great Falls are top tier by any standard. The Lazy Hazy Housy IPA is in my top 3 IPA's I have ever had. And it goes beyond the beer. My buddies and I came on opening night and despite the rush of people there to check out the new spot it really felt like a relaxing environment to hang out and catch up with friends. Been once: great atmosphere and nice view with two active train tracks making a Y right around the brewery. Excellent brews with one of the best sours I have had in the East coast. It is tough to find a good dry sour. Brewers unless they trained in Portland OR just don't get it. The brewer for Great Falls is high quality comes from OR through Boston and the brews are so tasty and fresh. Also has foosball table, darts, large are to sit, lots of windows, and easy seating. read more
