Let me start out by saying this bakery produces some of the BEST bakery products around this area, however..... their service is the absolute WORST!!! They hire these 20 somethings that have an attitude of entitlement as if they are doing some kind of great favor by taking your order after you have been told that your not standing in the correct line (that doesn't exist). We have tried to support this business ever since it opened and have countless rude encounters with the staff. We have spoken to the owner and manager about this several times. They always say they will address this issue with their staff but apparently that hasn't happened. I'm sure they just laugh their rear ends off every time we complain about the service. This is a small town where news travels fast. I'm sure one might say, "why do you go back then?" Because of the great bakery products.. but NO MORE!! Several of our friends have had the same experience and they don't go there anymore either. If you don't mind rude treatment then by all means enjoy their products. To bad they don't put some of that goodness into customer service. To the owners: You are not entitled to customers buying your product..It's earned !!! So make the effort to earn your customers. Absolutely LOVE this place. Best baked goods in all of Bishop, hands down. Most of the staff is welcoming and friendly. Only giving three stars because of the exceptionally bad customer service I received from the green haired woman with purple glasses. A smile goes a long way and she should definitely try one on. Some of the best baked goods I've had, and I just moved from Portland! The service is usually good, but not always. I don't think most of the food looks as good as it tastes, but I promise it is all very good. I suggest the Molasses cookies, the coffee cake and the cinnamon rolls. Nice variety of baked goods and fresh breads. A little on the pricey side ($4.95 for a loaf of sourdough the last time I bought one there). Nice little sitting area inside and out along the sidewalk to take five with a cup of java and a blueberry scone. Does tend to get a little crowded in the mornings because it is a cozy space. Ok probably the best bakery ever. The employees are wonderful. The baked goods are over the top yummy. Try the Mount Tom sandwich on sourdough. It may not have the quantity of choices like larger bakeries but what they have is delicious. One downer is trying to find parking. It's worth parking down the street. read more

Having purchased some property in Bishop, I am fortunate enough to visit the Great Basin Bakery more often. Raspberry and apricot scones-super crust and great fruit flavor. Well prepared cookies. And the sign of superb skills-the croissant; flaky, buttery but just so, and nice light crisp to the outside. This is hands down my favorite bakery in town, and is clearly the one preferred by locals too. It's an intimate little place right off the main drag. Lots of tasty options inside. The one thing you have to love about this place (though there are many more reasons to love it) is that it uses all natural ingredients in everything they make. My oldest daughter worked here for a summer before going to culinary school in Denver. We love the people who work there and the baked goods are fantastic. The only complaint I have is that there Sourdough isnt sour enough for me. But other than that try their chocolate orange scones and a mug of tea. Let me start out by saying I love Great Basin. I go there every day I'm off for breakfast, and I would go there every day, period, if I had time before work. The reason I'm giving the bakery three stars instead of the five it deserves is that I am tired of the crappy service I always receive from one particular employee. If it was one time of being treated poorly, I wouldn't think anything of it--I know everyone has bad days. But it's every single time, every week, for months. When I go in and I see this person I just want to leave. I never receive a hello, thank you, or have a nice day. She never asks what I want--she just looks at me waiting for me to say something. I went in there today and my usual order was sold out. I asked the girl if they were going to have any more and she said simply, "no" with no apology or suggestion of what else I could get. I work in customer service so I know that just saying "no" to a customer who is wanting a particular item that is sold out is very rude. It makes the customer feel like you don't care about their business. Honestly, if it had been anyone else who showed a little empathy, I would have bought a ham and cheese croissant. But instead I left and went to Hing's to buy a donut. I'm very disappointed to be treated this way when I am a regular customer. I love all the other employees that work here, and I wish I didn't have to write a negative review, but I'm hoping perhaps someone that works there will see it and address the problem. This girl just doesn't meet the expectation that you are going to be treated warmly where you're spending your money. After being a schats breakfast croissant/sandwich/bread addict for over 25 years I have to say this lil bakery blows the competition away. Service is exceptional but the breads and pastries are really what makes this place shine. This food is made with love and it shows. I've been there in line when the neighbors brought in the days local eggs (all blue and brown eggs!) in a basket. The molasses cookies are something I wish I've never discovered because I'm now addicted. The cowgirl cookies make great gifts as do the macaroons. The prices I feel are better than the bakery down the street for what you get. There are no additives or gross preservatives in this food which is what made me try Great Basin in the first place. It's fresh and fabulous. The breads are delicious and last on the counter for a week easy. Support this small local bakery! They also serve black sheep coffee from the roaster across the street. If you're looking to grab a fast ready made salad or sandwich they're in the fridge past the register and are a WAY better option than waiting in a ridiculous line at schats for what used to be a good sandwich but now is just meh- especially for the $! This Bakery is amazing. Great bread, awesome bagels and creative (and delicious) cookies. I'm a huge fan of the rosemary shortbread cookies and the ginger molasses cookies. Everything is clearly prepared fresh every day and with meticulous care. They've got all kinds of interesting cream cheeses for the bagels and the best coffee in town (Black Sheep). It's a little pricey but you get what you pay for and it is a small town. Anyway, if you find yourself in Bishop ignore the hype about a certain other bakery in town and head straight to Great Basin for fresh bread, pastries, and especially some seriously good cookies. read more
