Casual, unpretentious, and delicious. Worth a stop for sure!

We stopped in Bishop on the way back from Truckee for a quick lunch. The "world famous bakery" up the road was too busy, thus, we ended up at Great Basin. Surprise! Our sandwich-their version of BLT-was wonderful: chock full of goodies including thick, crispy pieces of bacon & avocado between two pieces of their sour dough. Wow! We decided to try their mini cinnamon round, and it was perfect: chewy and crispy and soft all at the right combination & it was not too sweet. We had to try something else, and we grabbed a bag of Cowgirl Cookies to have in the car. We finished the bag in minutes! Wait. That was not all. After all this happy experience, we got home, and as we unloaded the car, I discovered my purse was missing. I had to backtrack our steps on 395 & call Great Basin just to check whether I left my purse 300 miles away from home. Sadly, the answer was yes. Ouch! "Can you please mail it to me? I will reimburse the cost as soon as possible?" I asked. The cheerful response I got was, "no problem! We will mail it to you ASAP. Don't worry about the cost. We are just happy that you got home safely!" Did I hear it right? I am telling all my friends about this bakery, and they are now all committed to take the road 395 whenever they drive up north so that they can stop at the Great Basin Bakery and enjoy the great sandwich and baked goods. I am so happy to discover that some people do business with people in mind. Great Basin Bakery - YOU make America great! Seriously, they made my day. And I am so grateful. read more

My wife plays cribbage in Topaz a couple of times a year and always stops here to buy bread and bring it home to Ventura California. It is the very best. Can't be beat. read more

We called ahead when we were coming back from Mammoth on Sunday and ordered the hummus sandwich to go. 25 minutes later we stopped by and it was ready for us. Very good sandwich, very fresh and healthy (good sour dough bread too!) we will be back read more

Adorable cafe with welcoming staff! The Black Forest muffin was the best muffin I've ever had and the chocolate croissant was delicious. My boyfriend and I enjoyed stopping here for coffee and pastries on our way to Mono lake. read more

Let's put it like this..I have had croissants in Paris but the best yest is the Artichoke and Spinach Croissant I had at this bakery.

Always great food. Staff is always really friendly. Lots of vegan options. Great coffee. Very well priced and great day old selection worth checking every time you're there. read more

I'm addicted to the Cowgirl Cookies. Best. Ever. Worth the 4-hour drive. ;-)

The sweetest people you'll meet, delicious fresh bagels and yummy breakfast sandwiches! Delicious!

Stopped in on our way back from Mammoth because of the Yelp reviews. Enjoyed the Mushroom Brie Soup, sourdough bread, and oatmeal cookie. Bought a delicious Almond Spice scone and a few cookies bags to go. Was not disappointed other than the limited selection because we got there 30 mins before closing. read more

Not going to Schats anymore! This place has a great menu for sandwiches and quality baked goods.

We grabbed breakfast at the bakery every morning on our recent climbing trip, after we discovered it. In addition to having great food and friendly staff, the bakery carries Black Sheep coffee. I recommend the lox bagel. read more

This may be our new lunch stop as we pass through town. The sandwiches were super yummy. I had the Humm-Dinger and it was delicious! My son had the BLAT and it looked equally delicious. We bought a variety of cookies including a bag of Sierra Mud Cookies! They are VERY dangerous. Soooo good! I would definitely recommend. read more

Why go to Schatts when you can come here, get great food, and support local families in Bishop??! I am a regular visitor to the city of Bishop and visiting this place is always a must! They have a good variety of bagels and cream cheeses, the cheese bagels are just a tad greasy but still delicious!! The cookies and trail mixes are good too if you're on your way to the trailhead. I usually go for the spinach artichoke croissant which is also a bit greasy but sooooo good! Coffee and sandwiches are great as well. Try it out, its worth the long lines I promise! read more

That lady that was "serving" us was rude and honestly I have never been treated more rudely at any type of food joint. As far the bakery goes I think that it is pretty good. I wanted a sandwich or something savory and it was breakfast time and they do not serve sandwiches yet and everything is pretty much sweet, but anyways the only savory thing they had was a spinach feta artichoke croissant which seemed like it was 75% croissant. I really just wanted more spinach, feta, and artichoke. My family will probably come here again, but I don't know if I will get something. read more

My favorite bakery in Bishop and probably anywhere. Loved everything I've had here and the people are awesome too.

Friendly service and the turkey salad sandwich is delicious. I live in Bishop and go here often for bagels, soup and sandwiches. Delicious! The parking can sometimes be a little difficult. read more

The fun part is finding Great Basin Bakery. Their address is on Main, BUT you won't see the storefront. You need to look up and see a sign that says BAKERY with and arrow pointing the direction. The storefront is nothing to brag about. You will see a couple of chairs and tables and you say to yourself is this the place that people rave about. Once you get over the disappointment go in get serious. I go there to buy the bread. Their breads are fresh and sometimes you have to wait for them to cool off before you can buy one. The multigrain bread has great flavor and loaded with whole grains. They also sell sourdough and other artisan breads. Get there early as they make only enough that they can sell in a day. I have been there in the afternoon and they tell me that they are sold out for the day and come back tomorrow. read more

Small shop, so t can get really crowded. That said, best coffee in Bishop, and some of the best baked goods I've ever had. Wish we had gotten more! read more

The gluten-free chocolate chip cookies are so good! We stopped on our way to Lake Tahoe after reading the reviews. What a treat! We liked the cookies so much that we stopped to pick up another bag on our way back home. read more

Nice people. Good croissants, sandwiches. Looking forward to a cinnamon roll while camping

This is a fantastic bakery, way better than Schat's. It isn't touristy or high end but the food is great. Everyone who works there is very friendly and it is nice to support a local business that didn't make it from their heritage. I only go to Great Basin for my bread or pastries. Their sour dough bread is wonderful and their gluten free cookies can't be beat and I'm not gluten free. Highly recommend!!! read more

Some of the best baked goods I've had, and I just moved from Portland! The service is usually good, but not always. I don't think most of the food looks as good as it tastes, but I promise it is all very good. I suggest the Molasses cookies, the coffee cake and the cinnamon rolls. This is probably the best 'restaraunt' in Bishop so don't miss it. read more

We found our new favorite bakery/breakfast place! Local, delicious, and friendly staff. I had the humm-dinger - just the right amount of hummus & sundried tomatoes. And the CHOCOLATE CROISSANT!!!! Oh. My. Word. That's so yummy stuff! read more

Lox & Capers...Bomb! My favorite breakfast spot in Bishop. The last two times, they've forgotten to put the lox on, so I've gotten it on the side, eh. But besides that, breakfast, coffee, and baked goods. Perfect! read more

Nice variety of baked goods and fresh breads. A little on the pricey side ($4.95 for a loaf of sourdough the last time I bought one there). Nice little sitting area inside and out along the sidewalk to take five with a cup of java and a blueberry scone. Does tend to get a little crowded in the mornings because it is a cozy space. They have awesome cookies and delicious dark, rich chocolatey brownies. read more

This is by far my favorite bakery in Bishop. The other bakery in Bishop is fine if you like hanging out with tourists. If you like a great locally owned and operated bakery then Great Basin is the place. It's a little hidden off of Main St. on Lagoon St. but it's where the real locals go. I've been taking my kids there for over 10 years for the bagels and sourdough. Awesome. The hidden gem is no longer hidden. Word is out and they keep winning the best bakery in Inyo County. Our secret is out there. The service has has always been great and how many times do the bakers come out and say hello in other bakeries? Can't say enough. Go try them out. You wont be disappointed. read more

Best bakery in town. Even if the Jessica M dosn't agree. Is so stupid to compare a bakery with another bakery. Schat's bakery has been named the best bakery around the world, and Great Basin has been named the best Bakery in town. What is your deal " Jessica". It seems you have nothing better to do, than to badmouth a hard working local woman. People like you make our small community look bad. Tourist don't deserve to read your bullshit. read more

Really love the bagels and scones. Especially love how involved Great Basin is in the Bishop community and how much it supports our local schools. read more

Great bakery! Great croissants, bagels, sandwiches, and coffee! Definitely recommend for a quick bite on your way in or thru Bishop!

Let me start out by saying this bakery produces some of the BEST bakery products around this area, however..... their service is the absolute WORST!!! They hire these 20 somethings that have an attitude of entitlement as if they are doing some kind of great favor by taking your order after you have been told that your not standing in the correct line (that doesn't exist). We have tried to support this business ever since it opened and have countless rude encounters with the staff. We have spoken to the owner and manager about this several times. They always say they will address this issue with their staff but apparently that hasn't happened. I'm sure they just laugh their rear ends off every time we complain about the service. This is a small town where news travels fast. I'm sure one might say, "why do you go back then?" Because of the great bakery products.. but NO MORE!! Several of our friends have had the same experience and they don't go there anymore either. If you don't mind rude treatment then by all means enjoy their products. To bad they don't put some of that goodness into customer service. To the owners: You are not entitled to customers buying your product..It's earned !!! So make the effort to earn your customers. It starts with CUSTOMER SERVICE FIRST. You'll find they will stay loyal for life. read more
