I really like this place, but the food is very inconsistent. The fish and chips are amazing when done right, but some weeks the fish is perfectly cooked, other weeks it's over done, hard and dried out like it was left in the fried too long. They change their menu every now and then, but they seem to get rid of some of their best dishes. I wish they would bring back the Philly cheese steak quesadilla and the Ron Burgundy pot roast. read more

Our favorite local watering hole. Best items on the menu for dinner - shepherds pie, butter chicken, grilled cheese, burger and the onion rings are a must. The service was slow, understandable since busy holiday season. I got the short rib foccacia, and upgraded for 3.50 to onion rings. I literally got 3 onion rings, cold, greasy and coating just fell off. Barely any meat on sandwich and what was there slimey fat. For over $20 a rip off. My boyfriend and I came for dinner, and for drinks I had the Starcut Cider Mosa and he had Hazel's Nuts which we both easily finished off. For the appetizer we had the calamari which was nicely made, not over cooked. Wish they would have done more with the Ink sauce, but the fried beer bacon was delicious with the calamari. For an entree I had the Banger Sammy with the egg, which was so good. My boyfriend had the Cornucopia with one of the most delicious roasted squash I've ever had (I then promptly demanded half of it). Grand Rapidians online and in person talk up Graydon's Crossing all the time, so I felt obligated to go check it out. And let me quote the great poet Eddie Money, "I think I'm in love." I dig the relaxed atmosphere with an interior closely resembling that of a British pub. High-backed booths provide some privacy and intimacy should you go with a small group. They have a wonderfully-extensive beer, wine, and spirits menu, as well as chalkboard specials, suggestions, and staff favorites. I went with a flight of five beers, the stand-out being Short's Black Chai cream ale. Every item we ordered off the menu looked and tasted fantastic: the butter chicken was decadently rich, with nice, bright spices and fresh ginger. The Mister had their Cuban and it was gone before I could even try a bite! Even the child's meal was excellent, a burger on a really good bun, lovely, fresh veggies, and perhaps the best house-made ranch dressing I have had in a restaurant. Graydon's Crossing could definitely become our new hangout. I see what all the fuss is about and I CONCUR. read more

I'd highly recommend this restaurant for weekend brunch! Stopped in around 1 on a Saturday and it was pretty busy. Very hot outside so there was room on the patio, which I accepted. I was greeted promptly by the most friendly and personable server! I got (several) $5 mimosas and the breakfast sandwich. The sandwich was out of this world and the little potatoes it came with were amazing! Drinks were great. But I'm mostly impressed by the staff at the restaurant. My server and all of the other servers I watched interacting with customers had fun, positive attitudes and were very kind and personable. This was all during a weekend brunch rush with a music festival going on in GR, on a day with a heat index of 100 degrees. They also have an upstairs that many servers have to run up & down from. The food is good but the staff is almost superhuman - kudos to everybody! read more

Great casual dining experience that pleased three very different pallets. I got the "Burrito" (meatless) and didn't think it was lacking for wont of meat. It had a nice curry flavor, a little kick, and the pickled onions helped cut the richness. Friends got Carriage-house Beef & Pondicherry Wrap, with a side of fries. They were both pleased, although there was a comment about the tandoori chicken in the Wrap being really chewy/fatty. Drinks were good. Dessert was amazing. The birthday girl got the crème brûlée and my friend and I split brownie skillet. Talk about death by chocolate. Service was great - friendly, but not barraging is with checking-ins. read more

This place is a little outside of my normal beaten path, but I'm so glad we stopped in a few weeks ago. I'm not sure the best way to describe it - a Modern English Gastro Pub I think is the most apt. The menu is full of a mix of English staples (Shepherd's Pie, Fish and Chips), American Staples (Burger and Grilled Cheese), and some Indian interpretations (Butter Chicken Naanwich, Curried Chili Wontons). They've also got a decent sized beer menu if that tips your fancy Anyway, we stopped in with another couple and got seated upstairs - it's a cozy place with not great parking (their parking lot is small, but there is some street parking not to long of a walk away). I got the Fish & Chips and ended up really enjoying it - nice big cuts of fish and big potato-y fries. The best thing about this place was the service - they're very accommodating to allergy issues, and the menu is marked with what dishes can be Vegetarian/Vegan/Gluten-Free/Dairy Free. We ended up staying so long we were the only people left upstairs, but our waitress never made us seem like a burden (we asked a number of times, and agreed that we'd head downstairs if we wanted anymore drinks/food to free her from walking back to check on us near the end). BRUNCH REVIEW Came here for brunch with a big group on a Saturday morning. This is an English Pub/Restaurant with the England flags draped on the railing and the European soccer playing on the TVs (as well as the TV in the bathroom so you don't miss any action). This place had a lot of unique tongue in cheek menu items including The Ron Swanson. I didn't go with that as I am not a huge bacon guy so I went with the breakfast burrito which is HUGE and comes packed with eggs, beer bacon. cheese, fried potatoes, and veggies. It's also covered with chorizo gravy. Everyone at my table said I was the ordering winner because what I ordered looked the best and I might have to agree. This wasn't the best brunch experience I've ever had but it was very tasty and filled me up so if I'm back in town, I would go back. read more

We were originally going to eat at Vivant, but the entire east side was out of power so we ended up here by chance. The open sign was on and it looked interesting. They have a nice assortment of Michigan beers from several breweries. I still got my Vivant beer, and they had another from old nation which is one of my husbands favorites from the Williamston brewery. The interior was super cozy and definitely felt like a European pub. Perfect on a windy and cold Michigan "spring" day. We ordered the onion rings for an appetizer and they are HUGE. Kind of like onion ring donuts. Once they cooled a bit the batter hardened just enough so that they were easy to eat without falling apart. We ordered the butter chicken and burger for our entrees. My husband ordered his burger medium rare and they cooked it perfectly. The butter chicken needed a little salt but was very good. We finished with the key lime creme brûlée. Had a great afternoon here, our server was very friendly as well. Hope to stop again before too long. If I lived in the area I would frequent this place for beers. read more

Best happy hour in GR (for cheap drinks)!! Check their website before going but their daily specials are some of the best in town! You can get a pint of your favorite craft beer for $3 on Mondays for example! They have something crazy like 50 beers on tap so if you're a beer fanatic then this is your place! They have an AWESOME deal every night of the week, and yes, even weekends there's a deal! Atmosphere review: This is your neighborhood Irish pub where you feel like a regular after going twice! It's very cozy and exactly what you would expect in a pub. Nothing special or too fancy but just a solid spot! They also have a great little outdoor patio area that's shaded and one of my favorite summer spots! Go sit outside and have a beer here for happy hour and you'll be happy, I promise. Food review: I went and shared a grilled cheese and fries with my girlfriend (I ate the grilled cheese too fast and forgot to take a picture). The grilled cheese was fantastic! It was top 5 grilled cheeses I've had in my life, it was made with some sort of fancy cheeses (from what I could tell) and was I'm sure filled with calories and flavor! Will be ordering this again. This has been my favorite watering hole for craft beer in Kent County for ten years now. However, I am seeing some disturbing trends on my last two visits this summer. First, on two different hot and humid summer days, the air conditioning was not on, which made it ridiculous to try and sit inside. How can you not run the air conditioning on a hot day, two weeks in a row? That contributed to the bathroom wafting a urine smell several feet down the hallway, which I've never experienced here before. Next, my Deschutes Fresh Squeezed IPA tasted off. The waitress said that it might be that Deschutes changed the recipe, but I've had it immediately afterwards in the next few days at three other local establishments and it was as good as ever. So, that leads me to believe that the beer lines need to be cleaned more often. If the beer lines are dirty, it doesn't matter what kind of beer you order, because they will all taste off. I noticed this problem at The Flat River Grille with their Ayinger beer, then The Score and now Graydon's. If this poor hygiene issue become the new fad, on tap beer will become a thing of the past. read more

How do I even begin?! This place is quaint and delicious. When I walked in, I noticed how intimate it was. Everyone in the restaurant had drinks and food and appeared to be happy. I immediately noticed the aroma of food cooking and my stomach began to growl. We were seated right away and our waitress, I believe her name was Savannah, was there shortly after to take our drink order. It was $5 off pitchers, which was a pleasant surprise. Our drinks came promptly in a large glass pitcher. Next, the menu. Oh dear lord. It was so difficult for me to choose! Everything sounded amazing and by the looks of the food people around me were enjoying, it was. We ended up getting the curry chicken wontons as an appetizer and can I just say, I NEED THEM ALL THE TIME NOW! I was blown away by all the flavors incorporated. Next we got our main dishes which was a tough decision. I got the flank steak Sammy (highly recommended) and my boyfriend got the fish and chips. The slaw on my sandwich was so unique and it just brought out all the flavors in it and can we just take a second to appreciate the soft warm bread it was served on? I'm not a huge bread lover, however, this was truly mouth watering! The fish and chips were off a scale level. When we think fish and chips we think 5-6 small pieces of breaded fish and a pile of fries. No. When you order fish and chips here you get a whole filet! Yes, you read that right. So so good. The service is amazing as well. Everything was fast and our waitress took the time to explain dishes as well as sit with us and socialize a little between taking orders. We came here on a Saturday night to split some apps, a dessert, and have a couple beers among a small group of friends. And it was a blast, here is a breakdown: Pros: -Waitstaff at the bar was AWESOME. Extremely attentive to our group of our, even introduced themselves to us by name and used our names, which I thought was really cool. -extensive draft list - kettle chips with BBQ sauce and chicken quesadilla- get it to split. Came here for the fish and chips. The breading was soggy and gross after it sat on my plate for just a few minutes. It was so greasy as well. Had the onion rings as well and they were the most greasy thing I'd ever seen or attempted to eat. The bar area and stairs going down stairs wreaked of mold so badly I had an instant headache. The bar area smelled of old stale beer and unsanitary surfaces. That can be ok for old dive bars in some cases when it isn't accompanied by wreaking mold and decaying building. Older building that houses an old bar. Nice, relaxed atmosphere with Otis Redding, Junior Walker & The Allstars and similar music. Variety of beer on tap to include numerous Porters & Stouts (right up my alley). My wife was ecstatic when she found they had three different ciders on tap. She had the Shepherds Pie and declared it the best she's ever eaten. I found the Gorgonzola Salad (w/ grilled chicken) to be marvelous. What's not to like? I loved everything about this place. It's small, dark and lively..... a great English pub!!!! My husband and I both ordered a glass of wine, in which they are very generous with their pours! We had a hard time deciding on what to eat because there were so many things that sounded amazing! We were going to order the same meal and the waitress suggested we get an appetizer and then split the main course..... so glad she thought of that! We got the brussel sprouts and Ron Burgundy. Both were delicious but especially the Ron Burgundy.....comfort food for sure. Even though we split the main course, we were both full. Of course, we had to try dessert, so we opted for the shooter-sized lemon raspberry dessert. It was good but not my favorite. My centennial review couldn't have been marked by a more fitting dining experience. The Misses and I were on the drive back from Silver Lake in West Michigan back home to Metro Detroit and this was the apple that caught our eye in the Grand Rapids area. Neither of us have been to Grand Rapids proper and we figured a quick stop for a meal in this eclectic and small big city would be better than nothing. My, oh my, what a great stop it ended up being. Located in a cozy but urban part of Grand Rapids, you can tell the place is unique before you even walk to it. Very colonial British building and signage. Inside the lights were dim, walls brick paved, plenty of wooden seating/tables and the bar was out of this world - a beer lover's heaven. The restaurant was sizable with 2 floors, but we chose the bottom. The menu offers a lot of classic and traditional Anglo countryside dishes, sandwiches, and here's the cool part - Britified Indian food! you heard me right. This place captures colonial to present day British food and even encompasses the very real history of Britain having been in control of India pre-1947. So the Indian dishes probably had a very "this is what Brits liked from North India and this is how they would make it themselves" sort of a feel to it. Being as I am Indian and prefer authentic South Indian food, I opted for a traditional British dish - though I was nevertheless very impressed by this rare concept of cuisine they served here. I chose the City Combo to share as an appetizer with my g/f and it has some nice oily and toasty bread with avocado slices and ever creamy herbed goat cheese spread with it. There were only 3 bread pieces of bread which was not enough for the amount of goat cheese, the $1 extra that buys 5 more pieces of bread is well worth the investment so that you can properly finish the heavenly goat cheese. Each avocado was very spreadable and harmonized nicely with the goat cheese. The cup of soup we chose with the City combo was the Mulligatawny Stew, which was a curried chicken and vegetable soup. I highly recommend it as it tastes like a perfect blend of a British/Indian cuisine based soup. I ordered a Wisconsin Amber Ale beer that hit the spot dead on. The Sunday/Monday special is a 16-ounce draft for $2.50 so I can't complain about the cost - it went very well with the meal. Don't let my frugality misguide you, however, because the beer menu was about as thick as a National Geographic - so if you're wallet is capable - let your curiosity get the best of ya! We were able to shoot darts and just hang out in the pub area while we waited for our food, which was really COOL. The folks here were amongst the friendliest in the nation! My entree selection was the "Yorktown Stuffed Chicken." Tender, juicy chicken breast, stuffed with cornbread stuffing and Irish bacon and drizzled with Rosemary garlic gravy, moderately so as to not divert too much attention from the portion of meat itself. Y-U-M-M-Y. The "From Scratch" mashed potatoes were not falsely advertised - as they tasted so creamy and made from scratch with some skins left in. The vegetables (broccoli, snow peas, carrots, etc.) were pan sauteed so as to have a more crunchy, tasty side dish as opposed to plain old steamed vegetables. The Yorkshire pudding was somewhat bland, but knowing that it's intentionally that way is part of the beauty because a side dish that takes away from the main course is not something the Brits enjoy, and it's something we Americans could learn from (e.g. Mom's bad meatloaf with delectable mac & cheese). My girlfriend's dish had the same savory sides, but her main course was the "Carriage House Beef." We are talking about some of the most slow cooked, tender, falls apart from the nudge of your fork type of roast beef here. Still wonderfully dark pink at the center, and blissfully dark brown on the outside, this wild mushroom gravy topped roast beef did NOT disappoint. It was moist, tender, chunks of beefy delight and probably offered a type of relief that nothing else could give on many a cold, wintry nights in Canterbury. Overall, this place was a real pleasure. So cozy, so real, and so savory good. I am truly impressed that Grand Rapids has a place that serves up something I probably wouldn't be able to find in all of Metro-Detroit with our 6 million people strong! This was a real memorable dining experience and I could see myself dining here again the next time I'm in Grand Rapids - I hope to enjoy the city more the next time I'm there. One of Grand Rapids most loved resturants amoung locals for good reason. Gastro pub menu + huge beer selection + the ambiance of a Chicago tavern = great experiance! On my most recent trip I stopped in with friends for a late night drink. I asked the bartender the (dumb) question of what's on tap. With 40 beers on tap he wasn't about to list them all but gave me a few suggestions for stouts and porters, when I said that was my favorite. Service was great for our entire visit and it looked like others in the resturant were having a good times too. They have specials most nights of the week and a bloody mary bar on weekend afternoons. read more

But lately it has been super inconsistent and needs to get its act together. Everything about this place was different - and in a good way. A very good way: 1. The building itself looks to be a quaint 1880's or '90s era storefront. 2. The interior is comfortably dark and pub-like (especially appreciated on a hot summer day). 3. More beers on tap than I've ever seen anywhere else, including at least a dozen Michigan microbrews 4. A one-of-a-kind, East-meets-West menu featuring American and English dishes infused with Indian or Northern African spices. YUM. (I got the Morrocan barley burger - to die for) 5. Superb service from a staff that really knows and loves the menu. I've almost talked myself into giving this five stars. But I'll wait until I visit a second time, which I definitely will, even though it's a two hour drive. read more
