Graydon's is a great spot for people who love beer! Every time I visit Graydon's I like to try a new beer I've never had before. Service is still exemplary, but food issues the past few times we've been there leaves me wanting a little more. Tonight we went over to try out their "Meatless Monday's". I follow their FB page and have seen them promote it every Monday. Well turns out the actual meatless Monday offerings are kinda few and then at 6pm they were out of the Mushroom Vindaloo. Bummer. Ended up getting the Indian fish Tacos (why is this on the on the Meatless Mondays and grilled cheese isn't?) The fish was really over cooked. I came here for lunch over the holiday with some folks I went to high school with. I'm pretty sure we were the only people in the whole place (ok, I think there might have been one or two other tables), but that is a product of the time we arrived and not the quality of the experience. It was great for my friend's new baby who was able to catch some Z's without a loud stereo or being bumped or anything like that. The beer list is overwhelming unless you have a pretty good idea of what you like and don't like. I think it'd be a blast to just open up randomly and point. But that might not turn out too well if you're particular about your brewskis. I don't even know if they have shitty college beer on their menu. Probably. But in the face of such great microbrews and imports, frankly, who cares? The menu is essentially British - Indian, which is a great idea and totally makes sense considering the cultural history between the two countries. And you can get Indian food all over everywhere in England. Conceptually, I thought it was a great idea. I had the Chicken tikka masala, which had a good sauce/stew with it but could have used a little more kick. I like ethnic food to punch me in the face a little bit. None of that bland midwestern business. The pieces of chicken were also a little too large for eating in one or two bites, so some disassembly required. I think the rest of the group got the fish and chips, lasagne, and the mulligatawny stew and half sandwich. No complaints there, I think everything was enjoyed quite a bit. Cool pub atmosphere and a great staff! We were exhausted after driving all day and almost went somewhere in walking distance to our hotel - we were all glad we didn't! My friend got the quinoa soup and salad - she LOVED both! Then my other friend got the chef special - chicken kabobs - he said they were great too! I really like Graydon's a lot. The atmosphere is laid-back, they have tv's to check out a game, and their beer selection is one of the best I've seen around these parts. Their food is equally impressive for the most part. My favorite dishes are the shepard's pie, the indian chicken wrap, and their soups are also pretty solid. I struggled with the amount of stars I gave this restaurant...it was between 4 and 5. I decided on 4 stars because it was very very good, but not what I want to reserve for a 5. If you have never been, it is well worth the trip. A gazillion beers on tap from the common to the unique. Great atmosphere, Shepard's Pie is a must. The Goat Cheese appetizer lacked the familiar "twang" a good chevre would possess, but again, worth a try. The crustini with avocado that comes with the appetizer is the best part...order extra custini! The Sheppard's Pie would be a great intro to lamb for those who haven't tried it before. A very hearty and delicious dish. I don't know why but I decided to order some onion rings to go with the above......Whoa!!!!!! I mean the best I have had in a long time. Fried perfectly, not greasy at all, great portion size and I WILL reorder when I return. Great garlic aoli served on the side, well balanced and so much more than ketchup...(I had ketchup too...go on... treat yourself!) Best place to go try new draft beers; their beer menu is huge, with descriptions to help you choose. They also have beer flights, and sample sizes available. They also uncork one beer at a time in a cask, which I have never tried, but apparently it has a unique flavor. Love the Indian nachos, the Roddy Dodger sandwich, and the french fries that are served with garlic aoili. People either love or hate the fish and onion rings; they're hugely breaded and fluffy, almost like a donut. Smoking, but well ventilated, so it is not nearly as bad as other pubs I have been too. High-backed booths and dark decor make it very cozy inside. WARNING: Graydon's opened a new location in East Grand Rapids on Wealthy Street. Originally it was as unique and delicious as the Plainfield location, but now, due to "customer demand," they're taking all the special things off the menu and basically turning it into an Applebees. I've eaten at Graydon's Crossing twice now - once when it opened a few years ago, and once tonight. The food was tasty and looked great both times. Tonight I ordered the vegetarian (Indian inspired) lasagna. It was slightly spicy and tasted good, though I'd have liked it a lot more with about a quarter of the cheese and many more vegetables. The side salad was fresh, though not worth $3. I don't know if the waiter (Tom) forgot about us or misunderstood, but it didn't appear that my salad was coming out until my SIL asked about it. The food took a long time to arrive, but we weren't in a hurry, so we didn't really care. My tablemates all liked their choices: quesadilla with chicken, Stilton Salad, Fish and Chips, and the Indian Chicken Wrap. Looking at the menu, I'd say it is definitely not the place to eat if you are health conscious. Almost everything vegetarian (and non-vegetarian also, for that matter) was very fattening, and most had cheese, making it not vegan-friendly. read more

One of my favorite drinking spots. I really like the environment, and I always feel comfortable here. The atmosphere is inviting and cozy. The only small complaint I have is some of the furniture in the upstairs section is stupid. The heavy ornate tables with the tall wooden(?) chairs barely leaves any room for thighs when you pull you chair in. My boyfriend has chicken legs, and even he finds it uncomfortable to sit at those tables. Food? Very good. I usually order the vindaloo. I really appreciate that there's actually a little kick of spice in there. I tried the stuffed chicken just a couple nights ago, with red mashed potatoes and spiced basmati rice. The dish is always served with english pudding. The rice was not as flavorful as I was hoping but all together I loved the dish. Obviously I'm a carb lover, and I love mixing them all together. I was very surprised by how awesome this place was. We came in very late, about 11:30, on a Saturday night looking forward to killing off a few beers from the amazing tap list while relaxing on the patio. The place was so deserted I actually passed by it while looking for it. There was maybe one other couple inside and nobody on the patio, but the wait staff got back out the cushions and hooked us up with a little bench and a few chairs around a low table outside. Kitchen was closing soon but we wanted something simple to munch on, so we got the Indian Puppodums which are essentially nachos with mango chutney. Really freaking delicious and dirt cheap. I came in knowing exactly what I wanted from the tap list, and they had everything. It's hard to find a mulit-tap that isn't always out of something you're craving so that was nice. Had Dead Guy Ale, Delirium Tremens and Lagunitas IPA. All were awesome and served in their appropriate glassware to boot. The patio was dead quiet with almost no lighting, but we had been out and about all day so this was a great end to evening for us. Super friendly wait staff, tap list that is out of this world (puts Hopcat to shame), and a nice quiet patio to chill on, granted you catch them on a quiet night like we did. One of my go to bars in Grand Rapids (downtown). I actually brought one of my British friends here to try the food. It was not for his liking unfortunately ha-ha. I do enjoy the food here though! Especially the Dragonsmead (?) Bread pudding. Delicious. Always goes well with a nice dark beer. Anyways food aside, the ambiance of the restaurant/bar is lovely. It's a two stories building so you can either sit upstairs or downstairs, but it gets later they close off the top part of the building. Probably a good thing, I can just imagine drunken people staggering and tumbling down those stairs. Unfortunately this makes the bar very crowded if it's even a hint busy. If you are in a group of 4 or more try to get here a bit earlier before all the tables are taken ;) Great selection of beers here. I'm more of a stout and belgian drinker but I've tried some IPA's and didn't despise them. If you are here with friends and want to try a variety, they have sample kits made that you can order or you can just order sample sizes to drink. One thing I like about this place is that they serve Delirium Tremens. I noticed a few bars that didn't serve it and it's not big deal because it's not THAT popular, but I did enjoy ordering it here. We are visiting from out of town and found this place using Yelp. The reviews were really spot on. Our food was really good. My fish and chips was such a large portion that I couldn't finish it. The kettle chips were just a a bit too spicy for my liking. I would have liked a Guinness with my meal, but they didn't have it. And our waitress was fine, but a bit distracted. What happened here? For the first three years Graydons was open, it was easily my favorite bar in town, and one of my favorite places to eat. However, the past three years have seen a tremendous slide in quality. The food is frankly terrible these days, and rife with strange errors (any menu item that lists a specific quantity, i.e. "three eggs" or "two pieces of bacon" always comes out with a lesser amount, which is just cheap and brazen). I never was a huge fan of their bland take on Indian food, but now even menu staples like the sandwiches and fish and chips are suffering. Despite the fact that this place is currently operating in one or two star territory, I can't bring myself to give it that few stars given I do have many fond memories here. However, at this point one would have to drag me back there for a meal, and this saddens me to no end. read more

I really enjoyed going to Graydon's this past Christmas week, so much so that I went a couple of times. It looks like a pretty typical pub, dark and homey with tin ceiling tiles. What makes Graydon's exceptional is the menus, both beer and food. The food menu is interesting and unusual, with lots of small plates and an Indian flair. I didn't eat a less than delicious thing while I was there, including: shrimp and corn cakes dooms dates tandori chili fries with curry aoli Arcadia beer cheese dip samosas kettle chips with curry tomato salsa Dragon's Milk bread pudding It was all delicious, seriously. Probably the dooms dates and the bread pudding were my favorites, but it was all so good. The beer menu is a beauty in itself and would make any craft beer fan happy. What's kind of cool beyond the variety is that you can get most beers as a "taste", tulip, pint, or pitcher. There are lots of Michigan choices, but many others as well. There's even a fun section called "concotions" that you can get special creations combining beers/sprits. I don't usually believe in such things as black and tans, but tried a Dragon Fruit (Dragon's Milk/ VM apple raspberry cider). It was pretty good and something a little fun and different. The service is quick to answer questions and make recommendations when asked. Graydon's is a pretty cool place that I would recommend for those looking for the comfort of a friendly pub with the added benefit of great and eclectic menus. read more

This is one place I always love and purposefully take time to visit when I am in the area. I have enjoyed the food every time I have gone. So far I've had the kettle chip nachos, caprese grilled cheese, steak tacos, fish and chips, and have gone to a couple special dinners. The menu has changed over time and some of the things I have had are from the chefs specials. The have an extensive beer list. I believe they have over 40 on tap. It is a bit expensive but they use a lot of local ingredients and have gluten free, dairy free, and vegetarian options. I have always had great service and friendly staff. The one time my food took a bit longer I had originally been on the patio and when it suddenly started raining I was quickly moved inside. With all the shuffling around it made sense that some things got confused. They apologized when it came out and gave me a free dessert. The chef brought out my dessert and apologized for how long my food had taken. Even with the extra wait it was still worth it because the steak tacos were amazing! It gets really busy at times so be aware that there might be a wait for a table. read more

Even if I didn't live just up the street from Graydon's, I would consider it 'my' neighborhood spot. We went there a few times in the winter of 2009 during the home-buying process to chat about stuff over tasty beers in a cozy atmosphere, and celebrated there in the spring when closing was complete. Imagine my heartache when the unfortunate fire happened in 2009, closing my favorite spot for months. These guys get major points for for reopening Graydon's quickly, and restoring it perfectly. I can dig any place whose beer menu is thicker than its food menu--and the array of beers that Graydon's is able to get its hands on is stunning. I love trying new beers and trusting my servers to suggest things I'd love (they're almost always right). Even though it's slimmer than the beer menu, the food menu doesn't disappoint either. Indian nachos are a favorite, as is the Williams Burger, the blackened chicken wrap, and pretty much any special. Atmosphere is amazing too. Warm summer nights on the cozy patio are perfect for a date, catching up with an old friend, or enjoying unique food and beer with your parents/grandparents/aunt&uncle. Keep it coming, Graydon's. It's as simple as this. When I host a friend from out-of-town, I take them to Graydon's Crossing. A small but varied selection of locally-sourced English/Indian food blend with a beer selection not found anywhere else in Grand Rapids. The atmosphere is cozy, quiet (even on Fridays), and screams olde English pub. The beer list is a book, literally. The service staff much each have completely non-functioning livers from trying every one of their weekly rotating taps. The draught selection is long, the bottled list is longer, and the bartender's mixing abilities longest. I go to this bar to expand my beer knowledge and tastes. I have never been disappointed by the food at this restaurant. There are GF and V options, and they rotate the menu quite frequently. Even the Sunday brunch menu is nothing to sneeze at. I am updating this post, we returned there last week after the owner responded to my review. I did not tell them we were there and ordered the same items. The Shepard's Pie was still Very HOT but the flavor was much improved. The fish and chips were very good, Crispy batter and firm fish in the middle. And a TON of chips. The breading on the fish was a bit thick for my taste but if that is what most of the customers like who am I to judge. After we ate I explained to the manager who we were and she very graciously added a Bread Pudding Desert Gratis. Great craft beers and an atmosphere to enjoy with friends. I move them from a 1 to a 3 star. I will go back. I was very disappointed in this place. Had the Shepard's Pie and Fish I chips special. The Shepard's pie was So hot like 500 degrees and completely flavorless. The fish looked good but was cold and mushy on the inside. You could tell that it was frozen then thrown in the fryer. Came here as part of a group of seven including 2 small children. I want to note the excellent service. Very responsive and quick, and patient with special requests. And, the food was excellent. The kettle chips, as others have noted, were delicious. We also had some of the pappadums, yummy! I had the coffee marinated pork chop which was tender and flavorful. I've ordered something different every time that I've come here. Mainly because I haven't found anything that I particularly liked. I have the tandoori chicken wrap the first time I was there and it wasn't what I imagined it was. It wasn't bad it just didn't suit my taste. The second time I ordered a burger which was just okay. I've been enjoying Graydon's off and on for about the past decade now, having lived in varying proximity to the place. Over the years, its been consistently good and been a fixture in a neighborhood that didn't have a whole lot going for it for many years. The food is mostly loosely English/Indian inspired pub fare, prices are great for the quality of food, and portions are always very generous. Thinking back over the past decade or so, I cannot think of a dish I have ordered and not absolutely loved. Everything from a pumpkin curry burrito, to their Carriage House Beef. As a big fan of both pulled pork and French dip sandwiches, the Bali Pulled Pork is among the best pulled pork I've ever had, and I'll say the same for their French Dip. The beverage selection is always nearly overwhelming, and they constantly rotate taps which does lead to some disappointments when you find out that the beer you had your heart set on has run out. That said, anytime I've gotten a recommendation from the staff, its been a solid alternative. Inside, the atmosphere is cozy with exposed brick, low lighting, high ceilings, and tall, dark wood booths. It feels somewhere between an old Chicago bar and an English pub. There's also an upstairs dining room that has tables instead of the booths for more of a restaurant dining experience. I think Graydon's is likely one of the most underrated and overlooked restaurant/bars in Grand Rapids, considering the recent influx of restaurants and bars trying to do the same thing Graydon's has been doing for a decade. read more

Delicious, delicious foods at great prices! Warning for those of us with sensitive palates: many of the dishes are on the "exotic side." But there's still plenty available for us pickier eaters and they're great about leaving things out if you ask. Many of the dishes can also be made gluten free, vegetarian, or vegan! Their beer and alcohol selection is great, as well. My personal favorite, Framboise, is on tap and there's an extensive list of beers, wines, and alcohols. Absolutely wonderful experience tonight. We showed up to try a new place and we weren't disappointed in the least. We seated ourselves in a booth adjacent to the bar and took in the comfortable atmosphere while our server, Jen, came to welcome us with a genuine smile and warm greeting. We ordered our starters, the asparagus and mushroom Diane and an order of bacon jalapeño poppers. In the process of the starters being prepared, a gentleman showed up and gave us a plate of papadoms with mango chutney, on the house. What a wonderful, fascinating cornucopia of flavors. The starters came down quickly and were delicious! We highly recommend the Diane. Indecisive as we are, everything on the menu looked great. We narrowed our choices down to two and asked Jen for her input. We took her advice on both main courses. He had the chicken curry and I the fish and chips. Let me tell you, the batter on the fish was gorgeous, crisp, and obviously made with love. The fries were fresh cut and cooked to perfection, and the fish light as a feather and never fresher. I was floored at the quality of the food. The time came for dessert and we selected the dragon's milk bread pudding. The presentation of it and taste both matched the caliber of a five-star fine dining restaurant. You owe it to yourself, your friends, and family to try out Graydon's.
