The tree service I used in the summer said our elms should be trimmed in the fall or winter. So, I requested estimates from three companies. Gray was the only one that said they didn't really need to be pruned at this time. That the few dead branches were normal and probably not worth the expense to remove. I appreciate that level of honesty. The other estimates ranged from $800 to $1800. I recommend Gray Tree for putting the customer first! read more

If I could give zero stars I would for the mess after tree removal and killing so much grass in the process. The sawdust mess is my problem and not considered debris. My "$2800 check" was given at 2pm on "in person" February 20 and not cashed until March 11. Even after I inquired why it wasn't cashed on 2/27. Purposefully jerking me around because he knew I wasn't happy with the mess they left. There are numerous tree company's around. Make sure you get specifics in the verbiage with any work you have completed. "Debris" is way too open ended of a term. In my opinion sawdust is debris!! Not sure why Yelp listed in me S. Calif. Not right; I live in Arlington Heights! Gray just took down a neighbor's tree -- a huge tree! They did a great job with the tree. From all looks, professional and safe. Everything cleaned up quite well. I have issue, however, with them using MY lawn and driveway as a staging area for large branches and equipment. And at one point blocking my drive. Yes, the branches were removed at my request -- but, disappointed that they didn't have the courtesy to ring our doorbell and ask. Not sure why they didn't use the neighbor's drive and lawn. Rick came by a few days later, and personally apologized (and asked that I change/take down this review) -- after a new problem: they cut the cable to my house on their subsequent visit. I've used Gray Tree Service twice this year, first to remove a medium-size maple in the dead of winter, and then to remove/stump grind a smaller tree and remove a few stalks from a serviceberry tree. Both times, Rick answered my calls/emails very promptly. He's a friendly communicator and got the work done very fast. We've had other companies quote to remove trees on past projects, but based on price and experience, I'll call Gray in the future. I can't recommend this company enough! The maple was enclosed by an aluminum gate, a deck, and two nearby walls of my house. We watched impressed as the crew carefully removed it without any accidental knocks on our property. They ground down the stump to the standard level (8-10" below soil). Later, when I needed to install a young tree and old roots were present, Rick sent his crewman over and they got all of it out a nice 16"-18" deep hole for my new root ball. read more

I had a huge 80ft Elm tree removed from my front yard and 2 very large trees (Elm and Silver Maple) pruned in my backyard. From start to finish they did a spectacular job. Rick the owner was very responsive to my request and did a follow-up call after the tree removal to make sure everything went okay. It's the little things that go the distance for me so that's when I scheduled my pruning of the backyard trees, I knew it would be done with professionalism and care. I received a rude PM from Stayce in RE to my previous update, so I am now updating my review to 1 star. Here are my responses to her claims (everything in quotes is exactly copied): 1. "I am not sure what your payoff is in your choice to attack a business owner...". First off, I am deeply offended that you are accusing me of having some kind of payoff because of my HONEST review. Secondly, I don't know where in my review you feel like I attacked you guys. 2. "I cannot apologize enough that you feel it necessary to accuse a business owner of trying to mislead "yelpers". Aside from the fact you are sounding completely condescending, I already gave you my reasons as to why I felt like you were misleading yelpers. Again: (A) You mislead yelpers by saying that I reviewed you as 1-star originally, when in fact, I had given you a 3-star", (B) You mislead yelpers again by saying that "... our company is being punished with negative reviews from clients like yourself that we may have never met and/or done business with." **DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY** I received a quote from Rick THE OWNER and while we were waiting to have the appointment scheduled I had another company quote the same job because I felt like his initial quote was too high. I called to tell him I went with another company. He said he wanted to go back to his office and look at his schedule which he then proceeded to call me. I was unable to answer so he personally text messaged me to give me a hard time about cancelling and attempts to 'educate' me on how I'm suppose conduct business with others. Why did he call me back? It's done. Jobs done, we found a better price. I got it completed the day of the quote. It's over. I guess not.... I responded back to him via text, telling him I did nothing wrong in finding someone else. I'm allowed to do that. He tries to call me back AGAIN while I'm working with my own clients and then proceeds to send ANOTHER message to me telling me I'm wrong and that 'it's not about the money' 'I get 100 quotes a day'. Are people not allowed to cancel anymore without hurting his little feelings? If he wanted me to commit to a deposit I would have but his company is scheduling jobs weeks out. I think it's extremely unprofessional to continue to call and text message to harass someone for going with someone else. Very disappointed in his behavior. We've used Gray Tree Service two times now. The first time we needed a huge dying tree removed along with two undesirable trees in the front and it was reasonably priced and the crew came quick and was completely respectful of our home and our neighbors. We decided to use Gray Tree again to trim other large trees, to remove a very large pile of branches and clippings that we had trimmed and cut ourselves and ground the stump of a tree we chopped down. I called Gray Tree service this morning to get a quote for a face cord of firewood. I had been checking around for a couple of days getting pricing and delivery times. Some companies acted like they didn't care or have time for my order. Prices were high and delivery was maybe in a week. Rick answered the call at Grays and couldn't have been nicer. After I told him what I needed he said that he could have it delivered same day, this afternoon. I opted for delivery only and stacked it myself. It was delivered early afternoon, giving me plenty of time to move it from my driveway to where I wanted to stack it. The whole process was terrific.
