Jim runs a great business. I am very pleased with not only the quality of the wood, but of the service he and his team offer. I have bought firewood for years and I have used most of the competing business in Chicago, so I speak from experience, often bitter experience. I buy a lot of wood (we make a lot of fires!), usually a full cord in late fall at the start of fireplace season, followed by two face cords later in the winter after we've made a big dent in that initial order. The wood is a good combination of small and big pieces, the small pieces are great to start fires and the big pieces are perfect once the fire starts. Other places I've used I've had to split the wood one or two times, which while fun, quickly becomes a chore. As long as Jim runs Chicago Firewood, he's my guy. Highly recommended. read more

I have been buying a half face cord from Chicago Firewood at least 2 to 3 times a year, and the service is always top-notch. Today in fact, I got my order same day as they are already coming out to my area, but as soon as they confirmed, they not only bring you the wood, but neatly stack it. As far as the quality, the wood is dried well and burns incredibly well. I typically get oak, cherry and hickory, which are great to cook with and give a fantastic opportunity to just spend some time with the family outside (screens down) to just catch up. read more

I've been making wood fired pizza's every other day in my Ooni Karu 16. I called Chicago Firewood. Jim, the owner, picked up and we began chatting for our love of pizza making. Turns out, his company makes wood pieces that would be perfect for my Ooni. He had all the variations, Oak, Hickory, Cherry, Birch, etc... We set up an appointment for the drop off and we were all set. They moved up the date so I would get my wood before the winter vortex hit Chicago. I called a few days ago to replenish my firewood. I had the same experience as before. Jim was very accommodating and had my delivery made in a couple days. This is similar to my previous experience. Wood was delivered as promised and stored in my garage. The delivery man (Alan) is the same as the last few years and he is excellent. Usually that is totally a reasonable delivery time but son's bday that was night so I asked him if there was any chance for same day delivery. Im more than a little pissed. I was given exceptional service up until the delivery point, which arguably is the important part. I placed an order for 400 pounds of wood, paid for delivery, and also tipped 10 bucks when they arrived. I run an Airbnb and will be burning wood every night pretty much until the end of October so this would have been a pretty good arrangement for them as I would be spending hundreds a month. They were here about 2 hours after ordering. I'm like effing sweet. Almost as good as a pizza. So I was asked how far away from the alley they would have to carry to get it stacked. I told them 2-3 car legnths. I have a chevy cobalt in back that's got it's butt end up against the alley so it's spot on for how far it was. They get here, I point out where it's going, and pay so I can go back in and pee. I come out, they left the wood at the trunk of my car and left. I asked why they didn't finish the job that they were supposed to do and was told it was his understanding that it was a yard off the alley. I reply back pissed off repeating that I said 2-3 car lengths and a professional would have talked to me about it and not taken off like a sneak. Told him he lost a few grand in business this year and called him an a-hole. Will never give them a penny of my business again. Just to point out, they had three guys, it literally would have taken those guys an extra 2 or 3 minutes. I got it done in a little under 10. Even the tip would have covered paying them a dollar a minute each to do the work. You can't handle getting paid $60 an hour and want to whine about carrying some wood. You're in the wood selling business. What do you expect? read more

Crappy wood, overpriced. We too bought the ripoff 1/8th cord (which is $25 this year), it lasted about 2 days. It was really really crappy wood that burned really fast. We called around to inquire about getting a full or 1/2 cord and other places mentioned that Chicago Firewood just sells scrap wood of random trees that people cut down, not necessarily all oak or birch. So the wood could be good could be bad, it really is just random... Why take a chance, go to a real place (we drove 20 minutes to Niles and got 1/2 cord for $80 for oak and birch mix, and cheaper for just oak). Without driving there though, there are better places in Chicago. I think this place is just popular because of its high visibility location. read more

We just recently bought a wood stove and tried out A Chicago Firewood. The 1/2 cord we got seems seasoned; no green or wet wood. AVOID!!! I can't believe how rude their manager, Jeremy, was to me. When I gave him perfectly reasonable and friendly feedback about not being told about the extra delivery fee (for living in a condo with an elevator which they had to carry an extra 50 feet and then dump on my floor) or being told ahead of time that the wood was wet, he told me I need to find something better to do than call them and complain. I told him I was surprised by his strange reaction and that usually when a manager gets feedback, they will use it to improve their business. At which point he got even ruder and it escalated from there. I can tell he's a country bumpkin from the suburbs, we'll just put it that way. I will NEVER use your services again and I'll be sure to let everyone I know not to. You need to train your employees how to treat people. read more

Expensive and shitty quality wood. they usually have a nice looking pile of split wood by the front for show and then they load you up with garbage wood reeking of mildew which pops and crackles violently (not in a good way), spraying cinders all over the place. I can't speak to the firewood, but they're my new go-to when I need wood for smoking (barbecue). They've got big, cheap bags of hickory, maple, apple, cherry, oak, etc. Priced from $5-7 a bag, and in both chips and chunks. I won't give it the five stars because it's silly to beef up their rating just for me and my smoker, but I'm happy to have finally found a place in Chicago that I can get wood from if I need something other than the severely limited selection of hickory and mesquite they sell at all of the grocery stores. read more

I've bought a 1/2 face cord every year for the past few years from Chicago Firewood. I just call and they deliver and stack it into the rack I have in my garage. They always show up when they say they will. I've always thought the wood is very good quality. I ask for a mix of birch and oak which they always provide. We use our fireplace almost everyday in the winter and so we go through a lot of firewood. Stop buying plastic wrapped "fire wood" at the drug store! We have always had good experiences at Chicago Firewood Co. It's nothing fancy, but they are selling firewood not sushi. We have never had to wait for service and all the wood we've gotten has been nice and dry. They even help you load the wood into your car which is a huge plus in my book! read more

The wood was great quality, dry, uniform in size and split. They contacted me with the delivery time 24 hours in advance and showed up right on time. The driver was friendly and super helpful. And while I called very close to Christmas Eve, he was able to deliver my moms firewood on Christmas Eve day! I thought it would not be able to be delivered until after Christmas so that was quite a pleasant surprise.
