The work this year was performed in a timely fashion and done well. It's after this that things went bad, to our surprise and anger. My mother paid the invoiced amount ($500) as soon as the work was finished (she handed the check to the worker directly). The check was cashed promptly, but my mother received more than one nasty phone call from Rick, the owner, himself. He asked where her payment was and why he didn't have it yet (this is two weeks after the work was performed). He wanted proof of payment. My mother said the check had been cashed by Gray's and had the cleared check, the number of the check, and the date it was cashed. Rick yelled at her and said he would take her to small claims court to sue her. He wanted her to provide proof from the bank. My mother had told Rick she was sick (Lupus) and elderly (77 years old and widowed). He did not let up and continued to harass her, yelling at her on the phone. I called Rick and left a message, telling him to contact me to clear things up or I would file a claim with the Better Business Bureau and write a harsh review. He yelled at me and said that asking my mom to help him get proof of payment was like he had, "asked her to kill someone." (verbatim what he said to me). I asked him what his payment process was and if he had an accounts payable department. He stated that he deposited them himself every week. He said he failed to mark my mother's invoice as paid and called her to get proof. I asked Rick pointedly why the burden of proof rested on my mother when she had paid him, told him the check was cashed and had the check number and date. All this because he couldn't keep his records straight. He made excuses that mortgage companies ask for proof of payment all the time (and I asked him if this happened to him after his checks were mortgage checks were cashed... and he admitted "no"). I then asked him, "Did you check your own bank records to see if my mother's check had cleared," and he responded, "No, I didn't." Then I said, "So, let me get this straight, Rick. After my mom told you that she paid right after the services were performed and informed you that she had the check number and date, and that it had cleared, you STILL threatened to sue her rather than check your own bank. Is THIS what I'm hearing??? You're not even contrite about it. I haven't once heard an apology." He continued to yell at me, so I told him I'd follow through on my promise to contact the BBB and file a formal complaint against him, as well as write a thorough review. There you have it. What kind of vendor treats its customers this way? I was an Operations Manager for a 1.2 million square foot Class-A office building downtown and dealt with multiple contracts and vendors. I've never had this kind of experience in my life or career, and his behavior is reprehensible. Never use this man's services if you can help it. read more

We some tree trimming done by Gray's Tree Service this past March - a very large cottonwood, several medium and smaller sized trees, as well as bushes that all needed trimming. We had originally planned to have the work done in the previous Fall, but time got away from us. Come Spring, Gray's honored the price they had quoted in the Fall. While the price quoted was not the very lowest, it was truly reasonable given the experience and credentials they present (years of service, recommendations found online, licensed, insured, etc.) We worked mostly with Rick, who is the son of the original owner. Both phone calls and emails were promptly answered. Since we would not be home at the time the work was being done, Rick had his crew leader come out the day before to discuss with us exactly what we wanted done. We came home the next day to find the work done beautifully and the yard cleaned up. Very satisfied. That is what we expected. What we got was a bit more. After all the rain we got later in the spring, a birch tree (that takes in water from the sump pump) was again completely overgrown by late June. After only three months! We called Rick to ask for a quote to again trim this tree. He came out to take a look and could not believe the tree had been trimmed so recently and was already this size. HE suspected that perhaps the crew had missed trimming that tree. (We though they had trimmed it--at least somewhat.) Regardless, he immediately offered to trim the tree again at no cost to us. In addition, he trimmed another smaller tree that we felt needed a limb or two removed AND removed some large limbs that had broken off the cottonwood in last week's high winds and storm. It is clear that customer satisfaction is a priority for Rick and his crew. We've paid more to have these trees trimmed in past years, but have never been as well served as we have been by Rick and his crew from Gray's Tree Service. Highly recommend! read more

Well, I did not receive any freebies for writing this review (bummer), but, I have used Gray's services three times including one recently in June of this year. They have always done a very professional job for me and really have had no issues. I am a stickler for details so I always make sure all that we talked about is on the estimate. I had a large "tree of heaven" cut down by them a few days ago, and was very happy with their work. It was a tough job because the tree was right next to a utility pole which had wires extending in several directions, plus 4 buildings close by. I was amazed at their skill in getting all the branches down without damaging anything. They were actually my third lowest bid, but the two lower quotes turned out to not have insurance, even though they claimed otherwise. read more

I was so impressed with Gray Tree Service and the amazing customer service. We needed our trees trimmed in our front and back yards. I went on their website and requested a quote. I received a call back from Rick Gardner immediately. He scheduled a time to come to our house and was very prompt. He reviewed the trees and gave a us a quote on the spot. The pricing was reasonable. The next day he emailed me with the day and time he could have his crew do the job. Rick was true to his word and the crew arrived at the time he specified. They agreed to meet another company's quote and then, when they finally came out (after a dozen phone calls and e-mails to find out the date) attempted to jack up the price. I called the owner on the phone and he was very rude and verbally abusive. I sent them away and we hired someone else who did the price for the quoted amount. read more

I used them with a Living Social deal, $70 for $200 worth of tree cutting. When I called to line up an appointment, the man rudely told me he'd drive by my house to tell me what I could get done. He never contacted me so I called again a few days after he'd promised a call back. He said he could cut away a few branches touching my house and we lined up a day. No show. When I called back again and left a message I didn't receive a call back and tried again a few weeks later. Finally, they came out to my house, cut away exactly two branches that I could have done myself and told me I should have more done but it was going to cost extra. This guy was such a jerk, I wouldn't pay him $5 extra dollars to remove a twig. I understand tree cutting service is expensive, but I don't think the "deal" was a deal at all and definitely not worth the hassle. read more

I recently purchased a Living Social voucher - $99 for $200 of tree service from Gray Tree Service. I'd like to mention that before making this purchase, I emailed them through their website and called leaving a message asking if the tree trimming project I had in mind would be appropriate for this voucher. I never got a response. I didn't want to miss out on the offer so went ahead and purchased it believing that even if I had to pitch in some extra money, it would help offset the cost. The owner of the company came out to my house to give an estimate in a very timely manner after I called to describe the job. I explained that I was calling on the Living Social deal. This job amounted to the removal of 6 of the lowest limbs on 3 maple trees (2 each), all to be removed at the tree trunk in an attempt to open up the canopy to allow more sunlight into my yard. One branch was sightly complicated by a low telephone line running through a tangle of branches. The diameter of these limbs range from about 2 inches to maybe 5 - 6 inches max. Gray's estimate was $750 meaning I would have to kick in and additional $550. We thought this was an extremely inflated proposal based on other tree works we have had done at this home over the past 25 years, all of which has been much more complicated and difficult than this job. I called a second simlar family-owned, well established tree service in the area to get a second opinion. This second estimate came in at $350 and included two additional branches, the chipping of all wood and the clean up of any debris at the site. Thankfully, Living Social did the right thing once I explained this incident and credited my credit card for my $99. read more

Shame on me for not checking reviews before hiring them! I hired them as I was referred by someone who's family member works for Gray. Big mistake. Where the owner came out &gave me an estimate promptly & seemed very nice, and was willing to work w/ my fence company to coordinate removing bushes right before a new fence was being installed, he turned out to be a jerk. I guess it rained the day they had scheduled to remove my bushes (approx 71, so a very large job) and they worked anyways COMPLETELY DESTROYING the grass. One side of my yard was literally a mud pit - and I had sod previously installed about 4 months prior. When I called Rick to voice how unhappy I was, he acted like I was lying & asked if I had a receipt for the sod! Then he said he was out of town (or going) and would call me in about 10 days when he got back. Never did. Why I paid them I still don't know - I think more because of the friendship connection. At one point prior to doing the job he left me a voicemail & said if I had questions to call him back. I did have questions, needed clarification on something he said, so called him. He was not happy & was sort of rude. Lesson learned - referrals mean nothing. I will never hire them again read more
