Mindful of the Memorial Day holiday weekend, I said any time after Mem day is fine for a visit. 9 days go by since my first contact, and without any prior warning, this dude strolls up to my door at 4:40pm on Saturday June 1 ready to appraise my tree. We have a newborn who was woken by the unannounced, unscheduled doorbell, and I was unavailable when he arrived. Making myself presentable to walk outside and greet "whoever was at my door" (didn't know it was even the tree guy yet), he introduces himself as Browns Tree service... Called 3 times, each time leaving my contact info and work needed with someone who I felt I was bothering with my call. Seems like it may be an answering service. Ken arrived at my house the same day we called to get help with a large Silver Maple tree that was damaged during an overnight storm. Two huge branches fell and partially damaged a neighbor's smaller tree. Brown's crew arrived the next day and cut up and removed the limbs. They also removed the damage done to my neighbor's tree. Ken recommended that I have them clear up some dead branches remaining in the maple. The crew finished in a few hours and my back yard appeared cleaner than it did before the storm. Good start, disappointing finish. I paid Brown Tree Service $5,706 to trim and prune six trees -- a box elder, a white birch, an apple tree, two Siberian elms and a silver maple. Most of the work was done in June. It went well until they got to the last Siberian elm. One of the limbs extended over a power line. I wanted that limb cut off to avoid any future problems. They trimmed half the tree, and left the other half untrimmed. Was told they would have to contact Commonwealth Edison to get the power shut off, and that would be a lot of trouble, and that they would submit a separate proposal to cut off the limb over the power line. They refunded several hundred dollars. Waited three weeks and got no proposal, so I hired another company to cut off that limb over the power line. They did not have the power shut off. Four months later, on November 5, Brown Tree called and said they would remove that limb over the power line the next day. No mention of shutting off the power. I said the work already was done, and the man on the phone congratulated me for taking care of it. A mixed experience with Brown Tree Service. Most of it good and professional, and excellent cleanup. But that last tree was left half done, and I had to find someone else to finish the job. read more

We have had an agreement for over 6 weeks to do some tree trimming and a tree planting. Despite numerous calls(6) to request a work date, no calls have been returned. It turns out that when you call, you are just getting an answering service and "I'll send your message over" and nobody returns your call. Some of the phone numbers listed on the internet "are no longer in service"-- Including the number on the Better Business Bureau site. In both cases, we had very large silver maple trees, 60+ years old, that were hanging near or over our house. The workers very carefully removed branches and then trunk without any damage to structures or vegetation. This week they removed a large mulberry tree in a tight spot behind a tool shed and next to a fence and did so without harming our neighbor's vegetation, our vegetation or the toolshed. I had a great experience with this company until they actually attempted to schedule a tree to be removed. They responded quickly and provided a quote ASAP. Upon signing and dating, I waited a week, which is standard, until Ken Brown called to tell me "we're doing your tree tomorrow." He was adamant that tomorrow was the day. Well tomorrow came and went with no sign of Brown Tree at my house, and worse yet, no call to let me know that they would have to reschedule. I left two messages with their answering service and still did not hear from them. Two days later I called and told them that the tree was still standing in my yard. Ken Brown called and was apologetic, stating that "he thought the work was done." He told me that they would come take down the tree early next week. I then received a call from him the next Tuesday, telling me that they would do the tree "tomorrow." I received a call from a crew at 7am on Wednesday morning telling me that they would take down my tree that day. Once again, the tree was still standing at the end of the day. I cancelled my contract with him after being blown off twice. It would have only taken one simple phone call each time to say "we're hung up on another job, lets reschedule." But there was zero communication. It was obvious to me that they were likely picking up higher paying jobs and squeezing them in at the expense of my contracted work. That's understandable, but you at least need to communicate delays to your customers instead of making promises and not delivering on them. Three people told me in separate phone calls that they were going to take down my tree and I'm still left with a dying tree in my front yard that remains standing because they can't keep their agreements with their contracted customers. read more

We had a Serviceberry and Redbud tree that were both overgrown. When I emailed them to schedule, they came out 2 days later and did the trimming fast - the trees both look much better, were trimmed into a nice shape, and they did a good job of cleaning up afterwards. My elderly mother contacted Brown, thinking it was a lawn service. Not only did the guy not correct her mistake, he quoted her $800 for a one-time trimming of the hedges on 2 sides of her lawn!! They are #1 on Angie's List. Very Professional and they have great equipment. They mailed us the copy of insurance. They removed three mature trees and other junks around them. It was the end of the year and we needed to request to stop the power supply to ComEd. They guided us well in a timely manner. It was always a challenge to deal with the driveway use of the neighbors. We talked to our neighbor in advance but we had issues of the timing since they came at 8:00 am in the morning. They let my neighbor keep their schedule and removed their huge equipment out of neighbor's driveway when they needed to do so. They could have informed us about the schedule more precisely but our neighbor didn't want to changed their schedule any way. The owner also showed up and offered the use of a crane to speed up the process. Everything was done in two days and everything was taken away and cleaned. When you remove the trees, you need to get the permit from the village which may take forever. The village lady said in a week, but we called our village many times and obtained it at the last minute. You need to call J.U.L.I.E to mark the ground with flags. read more
