On June 24,2026 at 6:51 p.m. a major wind blew thru our yard. We were not home at the time. There was severe damage throughout our neighborhood and along the gas line adjacent to the back of our property. We had a silver maple tree in our back yard that had to be 100 years old. We have lived here since 1976. Brown Tree service had cleaned and trimmed our trees 4 times over the years. The wind that blew through ripped off 4 major branches 12-18 inches in diameter. 2 landed in our garden bed on top of our potatoes, 1 landed on our fence, and 1 landed on another garden bed of ours. Our tree was not diseased at all. In fact, the branches that were ripped off looked very healthy. We called our Aborist, Ken Brown that night. When he was able to get back to us (about a half hour) he'd be here by 6:30 the next morning. He was true to his word. He walked out back, surveyed the damage and said that this was going to be a removal, not a salvage. He said he would have a crew on site within an hour. Again he was true to his word, the crew was "johnny on the job". The crew worked so well together. They also had to take care of another tree that had also lost a branch but just needed minor cleanup. Ken was by several times while they were working. It took all day but the clean up was fantastic. He told us that because of the other tree damage around the area he would be back the following week to grind out the stump. Once again, on the following Wednesday, his man showed up and really ground out the stump. He was here for three hours making sure that the stump was ground out almost a foot below ground level. Ken Brown has always done a professional job maintaining our trees and did a superlative job. We plan to replace our tree this fall after consulting with Ken. We wouldn't trust anyone else to do it. I needed a large dying 45 ft tree taken down in my backyard and a big sycamore that needed pruned, cut back and shaped. Called the phone listed and talked to a real person (Mr. Brown) on my first attempt. We scheduled an appointment for the next day. Mr. Brown showed up on time, he elevated the situation and gave me what I thought was an honest bid. We ended up taking down 3 trees and grinding the remaining stumps. Ken Brown is awesome and very responsive. We hired them to pull out thick evergreen bushes from around our whole property and take a tree down in 2019. They did such a great job that we recommended them to our neighbors looking for some bush removal and had some additional ones removed on our property. Called 3 times, each time leaving my contact info and work needed with someone who I felt I was bothering with my call. Seems like it may be an answering service. Ken arrived at my house the same day we called to get help with a large Silver Maple tree that was damaged during an overnight storm. Two huge branches fell and partially damaged a neighbor's smaller tree. Brown's crew arrived the next day and cut up and removed the limbs. They also removed the damage done to my neighbor's tree. Little Sisters of the Poor St Joseph Home for the Elderly in Palatine has had the pleasure of calling Brown tree service their tree company for the past four years. There are over 400 trees on the 16 acre property. Ken the owner is a true professional arborist and is truly passionate about the tree business. He is knowledgeable of every tree and the specific care and requirements for each variety. He gets much joy out of helping pick the perfect tree when replacement becomes necessary. We usually hire Brown Tree for a day at a time and a five man crew shows up. They have had to take box elders down right along Northwest Highway and a pond on a slope which was very difficult but they made look easy. Our campus is riddled with silver maples that were probably put in because they are fast growers, but are not the most decorative trees. In one day, i'm always amazed at how much the crew is able to get down and everything cleaned up quickly. Good start, disappointing finish. I paid Brown Tree Service $5,706 to trim and prune six trees -- a box elder, a white birch, an apple tree, two Siberian elms and a silver maple. Most of the work was done in June. It went well until they got to the last Siberian elm. One of the limbs extended over a power line. I wanted that limb cut off to avoid any future problems. They trimmed half the tree, and left the other half untrimmed. Was told they would have to contact Commonwealth Edison to get the power shut off, and that would be a lot of trouble, and that they would submit a separate proposal to cut off the limb over the power line. They refunded several hundred dollars. Waited three weeks and got no proposal, so I hired another company to cut off that limb over the power line. They did not have the power shut off. Four months later, on November 5, Brown Tree called and said they would remove that limb over the power line the next day. No mention of shutting off the power. I said the work already was done, and the man on the phone congratulated me for taking care of it. A mixed experience with Brown Tree Service. Most of it good and professional, and excellent cleanup. But that last tree was left half done, and I had to find someone else to finish the job. read more

We have had an agreement for over 6 weeks to do some tree trimming and a tree planting. Despite numerous calls(6) to request a work date, no calls have been returned. It turns out that when you call, you are just getting an answering service and "I'll send your message over" and nobody returns your call. Some of the phone numbers listed on the internet "are no longer in service"-- Including the number on the Better Business Bureau site. Hmmmm...if you are having work done, confirm the REAL phone number before the estimator leaves your home. Otherwise, you may never get a scheduled date or a return call. read more

This is the second time we've Had Brown Tree Service trim and/or cut down our trees and each time they did an excellent job. In both cases, we had very large silver maple trees, 60+ years old, that were hanging near or over our house. The workers very carefully removed branches and then trunk without any damage to structures or vegetation. This week they removed a large mulberry tree in a tight spot behind a tool shed and next to a fence and did so without harming our neighbor's vegetation, our vegetation or the toolshed. I've seen other reviews from people on the west or south side and they don't go there, we're far NW side of the city, bordering the burbs and we're too far in the city. I had a great experience with this company until they actually attempted to schedule a tree to be removed. They responded quickly and provided a quote ASAP. Upon signing and dating, I waited a week, which is standard, until Ken Brown called to tell me "we're doing your tree tomorrow." He was adamant that tomorrow was the day. Well tomorrow came and went with no sign of Brown Tree at my house, and worse yet, no call to let me know that they would have to reschedule. I left two messages with their answering service and still did not hear from them. Two days later I called and told them that the tree was still standing in my yard. Ken Brown called and was apologetic, stating that "he thought the work was done." He told me that they would come take down the tree early next week. I then received a call from him the next Tuesday, telling me that they would do the tree "tomorrow." I received a call from a crew at 7am on Wednesday morning telling me that they would take down my tree that day. Once again, the tree was still standing at the end of the day. I cancelled my contract with him after being blown off twice. It would have only taken one simple phone call each time to say "we're hung up on another job, lets reschedule." But there was zero communication. It was obvious to me that they were likely picking up higher paying jobs and squeezing them in at the expense of my contracted work. That's understandable, but you at least need to communicate delays to your customers instead of making promises and not delivering on them. Three people told me in separate phone calls that they were going to take down my tree and I'm still left with a dying tree in my front yard that remains standing because they can't keep their agreements with their contracted customers. read more

Just had a great experience with Brown Tree Service. Martin came out last year to look at our trees and make recommendations - he is so knowledgable about trees. We had a Serviceberry and Redbud tree that were both overgrown. When I emailed them to schedule, they came out 2 days later and did the trimming fast - the trees both look much better, were trimmed into a nice shape, and they did a good job of cleaning up afterwards. My elderly mother contacted Brown, thinking it was a lawn service. Not only did the guy not correct her mistake, he quoted her $800 for a one-time trimming of the hedges on 2 sides of her lawn!! This did not include any other yard work. Ridiculous and terrible the way he was obviously trying to take advantage of a little old lady, thinking she would just pay that obscene amount. They are #1 on Angie's List. Very Professional and they have great equipment. They mailed us the copy of insurance. They removed three mature trees and other junks around them. It was the end of the year and we needed to request to stop the power supply to ComEd. They guided us well in a timely manner. It was always a challenge to deal with the driveway use of the neighbors. We talked to our neighbor in advance but we had issues of the timing since they came at 8:00 am in the morning. They let my neighbor keep their schedule and removed their huge equipment out of neighbor's driveway when they needed to do so. They could have informed us about the schedule more precisely but our neighbor didn't want to changed their schedule any way. The owner also showed up and offered the use of a crane to speed up the process. Everything was done in two days and everything was taken away and cleaned. When you remove the trees, you need to get the permit from the village which may take forever. The village lady said in a week, but we called our village many times and obtained it at the last minute. You need to call J.U.L.I.E to mark the ground with flags. read more
