I walked in here expecting a major hipster hang out (I am not a hipster) and liberals everywhere (I'm conservative Christian) but I really wanted good coffee. The employees were nice to me right off the bat. One of the first things I noticed was the poetry framed around the store. I assume these are local poets which is really cool they support the poetic society in Norman. Mostly people were on their laptops which I expected. On the coffee/tea menu there was a sign that said "we welcome all races, all religions, all countries of origin, all sexual orientation, all genders, all abilities. We stand with you. You are safe here." While I do not agree with or condone LGBT+ lifestyles, I believe they have a right to do what they want in this country (my view is complicated, I vote against it but if my vote is out ruled that is the law). The fact that they mentioned religion (although I am skeptical how far they go when it comes to Christianity) is good. Some of my favorite customers at the place I work are Muslim. I'm not super mean to those holding a different worldview than me, I explain my worldview and leave it at that unless they ask for more. Highly recommend this place. It's quiet, which is good for the little girls learning to read behind me. People and atmosphere are nice and welcoming. 5/5 stars!!!! read more

I feel like it's kind of hit-and-miss with Gray Owl. Sometimes, it's great. They've got good tea, drool-worthy pastries, and plenty of games to play with friends. Sometimes, it's not so great. They have live bands which draw obnoxious, loud crowds. That would be fine and dandy if the building could handle it, but the building is just NOT set up to hold a band and fans. It's not big enough, and the acoustics make it an unpleasant, will want to make you want to bash your head into the tables experience. Speaking of tables, good luck finding one when you're there. I've gone into Gray Owl several times, felt guilty for wanting to walk right back out, begrudgingly ordered a drink, then promptly left and gone elsewhere. There's not many plugs, and the tables and chairs that are there are rickety. Decent enough for late night coffee, but not my favorite at all. Poor service, mostly because it take anywhere from 5-20 minutes to get your order. Honestly, I think several of the people that work there are either stoned, or just don't give a shit about you or your order. Coffee? To be fair, I am a coffee snob, so I tend to be very lenient when judging one cuppa to another, but this was ridiculous. I have had yirgacheffe brews before, but when I got a cup at Gray Owl, it was cool (temp), had a large amount of grounds in my cup, and tasted as if it had been burned and then was left to sit out. Not fresh at all. So, I tried an americano on my second trip, and my americano was burned, tasted too bitter, and lacked crema. Food? No complaints, truly. I have had several things from their case and they have all be good and fresh. The actual space is lovely. There is plenty of tables and chairs to accommodate the students that are there to study. There is also a large community couch in the back next to a well-stocked bookshelf. The music is good. There is a small table outside with a few chairs. Lots of artwork on the inside. Very nice. If the staff put more care into what they were doing, I think this would be a great place to grab coffee and study. However - and this is true for several places in Norman that have high school and early college students working there - the kids do not care about their jobs or the customers. Gray Owl has always been a favorite. On the inside, the building has been stripped down to the concrete with original local artwork displayed (and for sale). The thrift furniture is all mismatched but works together, along with the plethora of magazines, books and board games at your disposal. Their coffee is Intelligentsia, which truly works with and gives back to the communities they get their beans from. Gray Owl even has eco-friendly containers, tops, sleeves & stirrers, so you can enjoy guilt-free. The employees are always pretty friendly and are willing to make you a sample and let you smell the teas before you commit to a whole drink. My favorite thing to get there is a soy vanilla latte. Their syrup is flavorful & not overly sweet. All of the baked goods are made there and are oh-so-delicious. The quiche makes me feel like I am back in Paris. They also carry sandwiches from Forward Foods, another splendid and delicious option in Norman and OKC. Great if you want to chat, study or read. The prices have gone up since they opened, but still reasonable. Be aware that their drinks are made the classic way and not like Starbucks. Which is a good thing. Free water. Yay! If you bring them a mix tape you can get a free regular coffee. They are open late weekdays and weekends. If you are staying awhile, park in the lot across the street, otherwise you can park right out front usually. A must in Norman for the atmosphere, quality drinks and baked goods! read more

I'm really sad this morning, I'm writing this review from work, my husband normally makes me a cortado, but he had to leave earlier then usual so no coffee for me. I'm currently contemplating a visit to my second favorite coffee shop (the first being my home) the Gray Owl at lunch. I can grab some lunch, pastry, cortado and relax in a comfortable enviroment, if I lived in Norman I would be here like every other day at least. As far as coffee shops go though bascially they have everything I'm looking for except location, which would be dumb to count against them. This quaint, hipster little coffee shop tucked away on Gray street is a nie little aversion to the busyness of life. The decor is nice, lots of local artwork for sale. Plenty of cozy couches to snuggle up on while sipping warm drinks, Their chai is delicious, but my favorite is a pot of peppermint tea. Hands down the best tea I've ever had, Their lattes are good as well, and the baristas are awesome about customizing drinks. I once went to this place a while back. It's probably been a year or so ago now. The place smelled amazing because some pastry had just come out of the oven. I asked to get one of the pastry that smelled so delicious. The person behind the counter then went to grab an older one from inside the counter. I asked if I could instead get one of the hot ones that just came out. He said no, and that he could only give me one of the ones that had been sitting in the display case. I was kind of in disbelief. I cancelled the order of the pastry and just got coffee instead. Then I hung out near the counter, waiting on my cup of hot black coffee. I was about 4 feet away from that same worker who refused to sell me a fresh pastry, and watched him hand several people their coffee orders. So I approached him about my drink, and he then pointed to the counter where it had been sitting for a while. So, instead of making the tiniest bit of effort to indicate to me that my drink was ready, he had decided to let it sit a few feet away from me and let me sit there waiting on it. I obviously never went back to this place. Friends of mine have told me similar stories about how the staff seems to have a bad attitude. The coffee was just okay, but I don't believe this place deserves to stay in business with such abysmal customer service. read more

Meh, I've had better. It took 15 minutes for the guy to make my mocha. I'm sorry but that is just too long, especially when there wasn't anybody else waiting for an espresso beverage. Then when I got the mocha, it was not very good. Way to milky, lacked chocolate flavor, and the espresso was BITTER! Nothing worse then a bitter espresso shot. The shop is pretty cool. Vintage bikes having from the ceiling. The seating is random, and there were a lot of college students. I think if they become a little quicker and put a little more care into their espresso timing this place could be a regular stop for me. I really want to like this place, but my first experience wasn't the greatest. To start with, there was only one person working and about four people waiting in line. I waited at least five minutes just to place my order. The lady was very nice but it was too much for her to have to take orders and make all the drinks. While I waited for my coffee I used the restroom. When I walked in I immediately smelled urine and saw grime on the floor. I sat on the sofa to wait for my coffee that's when I noticed all the dust underneath everything in the place. Not just a little, a ton of dust! The service wasn't very good. No one told us that our order was ready. After seeing that people who ordered behind us had their order, i went to the counter and noticed our order was sitting there. The drinks weren't that great either, specially for the price. They didn't have any two-seat tables. All of the tables were four seaters and most of them had a single person with a laptop sitting in them. We had to sit on a couch that was so low to the ground it felt like sitting in a bean bag. One of the bathroom door locks was broken. So instead of fixing it, they had a post it note on it that said "knock please". I should probably admit it's not my favorite, but Gray Owl is open a little later than Michelangelo's which is good for after work. Honestly it's just not my ideal atmosphere? Like it's really cool and stylish, but that's not my scene I suppose On a pleasant upside, they seem to do latte art, like little hearts and leaves, which is pretty cute. I love Grey Owl, and it's the perfect place to chat. Comfy and inviting couches with vintage tables & chairs create a warm and cozy atmosphere. They have a great selection of teas, and they are more than willing to give you refills of hotwater with a teapot. I love their baked goods, and their blackberry scones are delicious. I enjoy their espresso, but I'm not a fan of their drip coffee. My major problem lies with the customers- typically college students- that come in with laptop and homework to take up a 4-top table by themselves. I am one of those people that carts their laptop in and uses Gray Owl as an office - but I only do so when it is more than half-empty. To begin, the town of Norman, OK totally took me by surprise by being way cooler than I'd imagined it to be. I was only in town for the evening and was on the hunt for a good cup of coffee nearby where I was staying. Gray Owl ended up being one of the most pleasant surprises and one of the best shops I came across on a month long tour across the US. Something that really excites me able a shop is when they're open late, which Gray Owl is. The cold pressed iced coffee was incredible and the atmosphere here is really great. I've been a loyal Gray Owl fanatic for 2 years! I'd confidently say this is where you'll get the best coffee / espresso / tea in Norman. They brew Topeaca coffee, roasted in Tulsa. They have an especially impressive collection of teas. I LOVE a plain iced tea from gray owl on a warm day. Now you have to promise me something - you MUST order a pastry item. It's taken me until recently to realize how serious their pastry game is. One of my favorite things is to sit at the bar and watch the bakers make the treats they sell. I'm usually weirded out by pasty items that aren't a plain chocolate chip cookie, but I've learned that you have to trust the Owl. They know what they're doing! Some of my favorites: fig date bar, toffee bar, granola and yogurt. And I definitely haven't tried everything, so go for it! I'd say their pastry selection is what puts gray owl into the 5 star category. The atmosphere is of course wonderful, cozy and homey. Be aware that this is a college town and evenings can often be packed with students studying. I like to go in the mornings and afternoons. And one last thing, if you're going to study or work (as I usually am), use your coffee shop etiquette! Don't just squat for the free wifi. I had a gluten free brownie (best brownie I think I have ever had actually) and a hot chocolate. Eccentric decor and plenty of seating make this place perfect to meet up with friends or study. I've been coming here when I'm in town (every few months) for years, and something has been off about the place lately. Employees seem stressed (and one in particular very, very short in tone with customers), and their selection of bakery items has dwindled significantly. This I've never experienced in the past 6 years, so when I asked if there were any changes lately, the employee's response confirmed my suspicion. I understand it's under new management, and that transitions take time, but I can't help but wonder how well the new owner had prepared for simply doing business as-usual --not too much to ask, one would hope.
