i've been hitting cities outside of tulsa lately & when i make these trips, i'm reminded on things i lookout for once i hit a city i don't usually visit: gas stations + corner stores, grocery stores & coffee shops. this time around after making an art drop-off, me & the friends i was with made a stop at gray owl coffee that was up the street from where the drop-off was made. before we walk in, there's antique heavy looking door that looks like something i'd like in my house. walking in, the spot is super spacious & the people there were super friendly. the one thing that stood out to me on the menu is exactly what i ordered, the sparkling cold brew (sparkling water + cold brew). also, they had some syrups & usually i go with a syrup when i'm a spot i've never tried before. i went with the french toast syrup because i can't go wrong with anything french toast-related, right? it was really good & even without the syrup, i'd order the sparkling cold brew over & over again. i paired my cold brew with a rose pistachio cardamom bun. it was talking to me when i was looking at the display with the other goodies (their scones looked really really good). the pastry was light & the right amount of sweetness, went well with the cold brew. again, the workers there were super nice & the one who was taking orders along with another who was making the drinks carried a convo the majority of the time i was there placing my order. read more

Imagine a warm hug in a coffee - that's anything from Gray Owl! This place is wonderful and really feels like a community-focused coffee shop. They offer a discount for bringing your own glass, board games, and $1 day-old pastries for a discount! I got a hot latte with maple syrup and wow, it was fantastic. Sweet and comforting, I thought it was perfect for a rainy day. I also got an apple muffin with real baked apples inside. This was amazing. Service was great, and the drink was prepared quickly! There are so many seating options, making it great for meeting with friends and socializing. There are many great coffee shops in Norman, but I highly recommend this one! This is my favorite coffee shop in Norman. It's got a few different seating areas, a bar you can sit at, and huge tables with study lamps and outlets nearby for studying or working. It's usually a bit dark inside, but as someone who gets frequent headaches, I find it preferable. The staff is always friendly, but never in an annoying, disingenuous way. They have really good pasties and muffins, most of which are vegan, if that's your thing. They offer lots of types of plant based milks including soy (I prefer soy due to its higher protein content and I have scoured for peer reviewed research and there isn't anything out there saying soy is bad for anyone). You can't order anything bad here. I love their lattes, they know how to make a cappuccino with foam and their drip coffee is usually excellent and not over roasted like a lot of the chains in the area. read more

I really like that they are worker owned and that makes me happy that I can support that when I visit. They always seem super busy with a line when I stop by. I love the huge table they have at the front- it's perfect for crafting. The coffee itself- I liked the blueberry syrup however my drink had this thick weird layer on top (I think maybe it was the soy milk curdling from the high temp?) Gray Owl is an absolute staple. I love their baked goods. I love their coffee (especially since they now use Clarity beans). I love the different seating options even though it can get kind of tough during peak study times to find a seat. I'm quite fond of the weird old circle couch in the back or the extra long bar if I don't have any homework I need to work on. The back patio is cool too. I think they make an almost perfectly balanced iced latte (just less milk than most places haha). The autumn spice flavoring they've had the past few months has been lovely. Also, I rarely take advantage of it, but it's really fun to get a pot of tea if you plan to sit for a while. Their music selection is reliably interesting. I will reminisce forever on the summer of 2018 when they played Mitski's Be the Cowboy front to back one day while I was sitting there... iconic. Despite the mountain of orders, my 12 oz iced matcha with oat milk (additional cost) was made promptly. I would like to point out that this iced matcha comes sweetened, which was unexpected. Since I usually lean towards a more bitter matcha, this was sweeter for my taste. And if you prefer the same as I do, you can clarify with the baristas. Loved the ambiance, the friendly staff, and that they use real dishes! I lived in Italy for six years, five years in South Korea, and three years in Saudi Arabia (plus numerous travels around the world) and never had art on my cappuccinos! However, that seems to be the "in" thing here in the USA. The cappuccino was delicious; however, the apple spice scone was not like any I have had overseas. My go to coffee spot in Norman. They care about their beans and serving the best cup of coffee: they do French roasted coffee--NOT many places do this! Other places instead opt for the drip coffee process, which is much faster but you lose taste and quality. To my knowledge they do not serve dark roast coffee. Dark roast coffee beans are burnt beans meant to cover up defects in the beans (making it an inferior cup of coffee for the same price). This underscores they care about the beans and serving the great cup of coffee. On top of all of this, they serve in house baked goods. The smells make you feel right at home! read more

Carefully situated along the not-as-bustling Gray St, Gray Owl is the perfect hidden but not-so-hidden lil gem along Norman's downtown area. It's a super cozy coffee shop thats neither shiny nor extra: just a spacious interior with simple furniture complete with some plants here and here. If you want an escape, there's also exterior seating in the back that I learned about not too long ago, and it's a nice and quaint space. I've mostly ordered lattes here, but no doubt you can't go wrong with whatever coffee option you choose. They use Cirque coffee beans, one of my favorite coffee roasters in Tulsa! I haven't found any other coffee shop in the metro that uses Cirque, so I am definitely here for it. If you're extra lucky, they'll have lavender cookies in their pastry case while you're in, and they are magnificent. read more

The best place to come for coffee or espresso in Norman!! I enjoy their pour over coffee very much but I'm really liking the espresso lately!! My coffee game is pretty on point and I'm comparing this double espresso to several of my favorites in OKC and it's the clear winner. The espresso shot is nutty and salted caramel. Most of the espresso I'm used to is very much dark cacao, this one takes a different approach and I'm digging it. They usually have a excellent selection of baked goods which have all been great. There are lots of coffee shops in Norman. This one has coffee that I approve of in an atmosphere that I can only describe "classical coffee". The coffee is strong and flavorful. At first taste your consciousness will say, "Wow!" The atmosphere of the shop is old furniture, tatted out young people with assorted body piercings and bad haircuts. This is where people read Brautigan, Burroughs or Kerouac as if the writers were sending personal correspondence direct to these disaffected readers. The people who dis this coffee shop are weak-kneed. They drink 4% beer and 2% milk. Be grateful they go somewhere else.
