We watched the two young girls on duty stand behind the counter with one of them playing in the other girls hair. No greeting. The place smelled and felt sticky and gross. They did not wash their hands or wear gloves right after playing around in each other's hair before scooping our gelato. They over stuffed the cups, crammed the lids onto them, made a huge mess and smeared it around the sides of the cup with napkins and wasted half of the gelato they scooped in the cups, then put the dirty, ruined cups into bigger cups. Excellent gelato. Delicious, varied, fun. We got two small cups: lemon and strawberry, and sea salt caramel and some sort of seasonal nut flavor that I'm blanking on. All excellent. The strawberry flavor is more muted, so next time I would either go 70-30 strawberry to lemon, or go with raspberry instead. Kind staff. It must take a lot of patience to wait for people to decide. I was definitely part of the problem- everything looked great and I would have sampled them all if I hadn't restrained myself around 4. Still feels like they're growing into the space itself- it's a challenge! I don't know what I would do with that space, but it feels like there's room for some creativity to bring it all together. We came right before Christmas, so there weren't huge lines. I could see that adding to the difficulty. Really enjoyed our visit and look forward to returning. read more

The recent visit to il Dolce Gelato was unplanned. We were planning to try Crimson & Whipped Cream, but... apparently they close shop whenever they want to, as opposed to whatever hours they post online... So then we ended up at il Dolce instead. And I could not have asked for a better dessert (that we came across by happenstance). 1. There's a guy. And he's got a beard. He apparently decides the flavors and makes the gelato and whatnot, which would make me think he must be the owner. If you are reading this, bearded guy who makes the gelato and decides the flavors, you keep doing you, because... It's working well. He even went and got me a chair from the back because they were all out of chairs (after a lady stole one of our chairs while we were standing in line). I didn't ask him to get me a chair. He just happened to be paying attention. 2. The flavors are fantastic. They actually taste like the names of the gelato, which we had come to accept as giant lies based on what we've tried at other gelato places. Like when other gelato joints say "Mint" it seems like they added some green food coloring and maybe a touch of toothpaste. Not here. Here it tastes delicious. I tried the Mint Chocolate, Mascarpone, Quasimodo (it was like... Stracciatella and/or something else?), and a couple others I don't remember the names of. What I do remember was how great they all tasted. The flavors are obvious (but not overpowering) while also being creamy and satisfying. 3. Reasonable prices. The Medio (Medium; can include three flavors) was like... $4.10 or something. 4. They're open late(r), compared to many other places in this state that think we should all be in bed by 9 pm. All of the above reasons just upsets me all the more about this really crappy (more expensive) gelato place we tried recently in Santa Fe, NM. How have I not known about this place? Il Dolce Gelato makes the best homemade gelato. I was recommended to this gelato shop by a friend and she couldn't have been more right. I wanted to sample every flavor, but since I'm not the worst customer in the world... I showed some self-control. I ended up with a two flavor cup which had blackberry and lemon swirl cookie. I usually stay away from fruit flavors, but wow I was amazed. This is a great place for the family or even a date night. They have great coffee and espresso, which is a plus. I have driven past Il Dolce Gelato on many occasions but failed to stop in. The reasons: both Braum's and Eskimo Sno are in the same parking lot, so when I want a cold treat those places have won in the past. They won't win as often now that I've had Il Dolce. They've got some flavors that really connect, but some that didn't work for me, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. We stopped into Il Dolce around 6:30 after having an early dinner at Los Vaqueros next door. There were 4 people already enjoying some gelato when we arrived. The lone employee was in the back when we arrived, but she came out after a minute or so. There's a sign that asks for patience as employees are preparing other gelato, so I am guessing they have one person working often, so he/she can't be in the front 100% of the time. Il Dolce gives out samples, so I tried the salted caramel. This was VERY good, near a 5 star. Creamy, rich, and you could taste both the salt and the caramel. Fantastic. I assumed other flavors would be as good, so I didn't get salted caramel when I made my selections, wanting to try as many as possible. This was a mistake. I went with orange, strawberry, and toffee crunch. Il Dolce allows you to get 2, 3, or 4 flavors at a time depending on what size you get. This is a great option, and it doesn't cost extra. Toffee crunch was the second best flavor I had. It's basically little heath bars in vanilla. This was also good, and there are plenty of toffee pieces in there. I also tried chocolate and vanilla, which my son had. These were good, as expected. Now, the orange and strawberry were not. The orange was incredibly sour, almost to the point I didn't believe it was supposed to be orange flavored. Also, both the orange and strawberry tasted very chemically. Neither flavor tasted like real fruit. These were misses and will not be ordered again. The joint has a few tables, but it's small. However, it was clean, as were the restrooms. If I had only tasted the cream-based flavors, I would be giving at least 4 stars, maybe 5. However, the fruit flavors were misses for me, dragging the average down to 3 stars. I'll be back for sure, but I won't get a fruit-based flavor again. read more

She allowed us to taste several flavors and was very patient.we asked questions like, "Is this made on site? How fresh is it?" Yes made on site and if the person is not behind the counter likely, it's because they are in the back making gelato. We were also told that the gelato was made within 48 hours.
