This is a great place to relax and study, read a book or meet friends. I've gotten the cold press which is really good, the vanilla latte with soy and some of their cookies. Then there's a the coffee; roasted dark as night as it should be, but not burnt. I like the non-matching chairs everywhere, almost like an expensive thrift store vibe. 100% will never return here. You know the pretentious arrogant baristas you see in movies? They all work here and the coffee was just okay. Service is very important to me and this is the worst service I've ever gotten just trying to grab a coffee. Be prepared for the baristas (they probably don't even like being called that) to judge you for what you order. Overpriced, terrible service. I stop at Gray Owl every time I swing through Norman. There's not a specialty coffee anywhere comparable to them until you get to OKC. They ALWAYS have their espresso dialed in - clear that they care. Their pour-overs are on point. I recommend grabbing a slice of quiche while you're there. The vibe is "chill living room" and the patrons are a mix of locals and students. Nothing haughty. My only "complaint" is that they did not have a variety of beans for different drinks. Ok if you are in Norman this is in my opinion the only place to get a good cup of coffee. I would love to see a craft roaster go in but until then this is your place. It is a little quirky and filled with hipsters who look at you like you have no business stepping inside but if I have to hang with hipsters to get a good cup then by all means let's be friends. Now the thing you may or may not know about Grey Owl is their baked goods. They are some of the best ever! I love their baked goods! Their fig and date bar is worth special ordering. If it's on the menu don't pass it up! I've never had. Bad baked item from here and let's face it we all over good baked goods with a good cuppa. So for all you non hipsters look past the funny hats, old man shirts and silly glasses and get some good coffee from the only place to do so in town! read more

Came here to study with friends a couple times Pros: Free Internet Lots of tables and seating areas for individuals or groups. Plenty of places to plug in if you need to re-charge. Good hours. Awesome people behind the register. Great selection of tea (hot or iced) and delicious cappuccinos. Gender-neutral bathrooms so no long waits outside the ladies' room. Cons: Had to bring my baby a couple times to study because we didn't have a sitter-- this place really doesn't scream "infant friendly" to me, but whatever. Baby stayed quiet-- if he had been loud I really wouldn't have felt comfortable staying, but when I went to change him I discovered that they don't have any relatively sanitary changing space to use. In the end, we used a blanket on the floor, in the cleanest corner of the cleanest of the bathrooms. I know "mom-with-baby-in-tow" isn't the vibe these guys are going for, but seriously, one of those fold-down things in just one of the bathrooms is $200 (google "baby changing station ADA") and the cost of installation. It wouldn't be the silliest thing the business has ever spent time/money on, of that I'm sure, and parents who are also students would appreciate it. read more

We've started going to Gray Owl once a month for a mom's morning coffee & breakfast. The atmosphere is definitely relaxed and there's no pressure to drink and run to make room for new customers. I always order a large cafe latte but have tried a few different food offerings. The scones are tasty and the various quiches are what I'd recommend for a heartier breakfast. read more

I'd like to begin by saying that I'm not very pick when it comes to food, coffee, coffee shops, etc. Having been there 3 separate times, I feel that I can comfortable explain my feelings towards Gray Owl. 1) Coffee is about average, way overpriced. 2) The staff is not very welcoming. 3) Seating is really limited and you might wait several hours before finding a spot with an accessible power outlet. 4) This one is most important. THEY PLAY THIS MUSIC THAT MAKES YOUR EARS SPLIT. Seriously, I hate to be so harsh because typically this kind of stuff doesn't bother me. However, the music that is being played is very loud, and it involves a lot of screeching and screaming (I'm a college student and it's still irksome). If you've got another study spot that has decent coffee for not-awful pricing, go there instead. Their blueberry scones aren't bad though... read more

Gray owl, along with its neighboring business "the garage" are where nice bicycles go to hang and die. The goal of each establishment is to serve good food or coffee. They reach those goals which is why I give them five stars. But the bicycles... Unforgivable. 5/5 I'll be back tomorrow read more

Delicious! Ive been here previously to study. This place was VERY crowded around 4. Very casual and hipster place. Love the casual and chill ambience. Love how they have freshly made baked goods everyday. Every day has a different Item of the Day. I ordered a vanilla latte. Warm, smooth, and not too sweet. Eh. Grey Owl wants to be the college/hipster hangout coffee shop, but misses a lot. It's hours are pretty bad, closing early most nights so that Starbucks becomes a better late-evening option. The coffee isn't bad, but there's rarely a spot to sit and work, the employees never seem in a rush to prepare your drink, and the general pretension of the place eventually wears at you. Gray Owl is a well-rounded local coffee shop. I've always loved this place because it embodies what I think a coffee shop should be: hip baristas, art and decor with personality, a great place to study, and a simple menu of house made baked goods and sustainable coffee drinks. In the last year I believe the shop is under new ownership, but it seems the new ownership has only continued to take it in the same great direction. There's a sweet wooden bar top now and the decor is very bicycle heavy, which is awesome. My only minor complaint is that Gray Owl's large size is nowhere near large enough to accommodate the amount of ice and coffee I require in my drink. I'm not the guy who likes 12 shots in my drink, either. I'm just talking about 2-3 oz of their fabulous cold press poured over enough ice that there's more than a few puny cubes left when the liquid cools down. I know not a lot of people are like me, picky about ice, but as hot as it gets in the summer surely I'm not the only one... My favorite thing about the Owl is their bakery case. I love l-o-v-e that everything is made in-house, right there. Not even in the back in a kitchen somewhere, but right there in front of you. The quiche is always great, as are the scones. read more

This is my favorite local coffee shop in Norman. Parking is always easy, but finding a seat isn't (because EVERYBODY loves this place). It's always luck of the draw whether you'll find a good seat here, they've got great couches and chairs in the front and back, bar seating, and several tables. Don't be afraid to share! My friends and I have had many wonderful, unexpected conversations with people we've shared tables with. This shop is full of both people coming in to catch up with friends and students who are studying. The atmosphere is so warm, the art is fun and local, the shop is sure to be patronized by some of the best people in town. They offer coffees, teas, and house made bakery goods daily! Oh my goodness, I've fallen in love with this little coffee shop. It has the most comfy, community feel and their homemade pastries are to die for. I had a chocolate sea salt almond cookie and it was so yummy! The blueberry scone was also very good. This is the kind of place that I will come to Norman for, and I cannot say that about too many places besides L&B Yarn Shop. As a Norman local, I have been to Gray Owl many times. This review comes after many years of visiting and consistently getting...subpar service and drinks/food. I hate to write poor reviews as i like to give many opportunities for redemption. However, Gray Owl has never really come round. I have never received good service from being actively skipped over in line (i assume bc I was not dressed hipster enough?), ignored (as in not making eye contact when making an order and then asking "oh im sorry, are you working the register?" being told "i heard you, i don't need a repeat", all without ever looking at me, to getting my drink served after people who ordered drinks 15mins after i ordered, to healthcare violations when getting baked goods from the cabinet. The music is almost always wayyyy too loud to actually enjoy the coffee shop feel and the age old pastime of talking over a cup of coffee. Would not recommend and in fact, actively avoid it. Not really sure how it has stayed open other than a place to say you go to for studying to prove how eclectic you are. *shrug* read more

I wanted to like this coffee shop, but the service ruined it for me. I ordered just a simple drip coffee and the barista informed me he would have to make a new batch. No problem. So I found a seat, saw an old friend, and we started chatting while I waited. Apparently, I didn't hear the barista call out that my coffee was finally ready so he came over and slammed my drink on the table with a roll of his eyes. Pretty darn good! I like to support the local, so I definitely had to check out this place. Love their owl theme, and the cafe is really nice & airy inside. The coffee was good, not the best I've ever had, but definitely not bad. My husband's chai was really good, too. Kind of on the spicier & less sweet side, but he likes it that way. I love that they have rice milk that they use to make their drinks! Great if you're allergic to soy but don't do regular milk. Their lemon poppyseed muffin was quite good, too. Nice & lemony. I'd come back here! I think it'd be a nice place to see a band or something, too (and they do have live music here from time to time, it seems). read more

However, they have very poor customer service and seem like they would rather not make eye contact or talk to you at all. Great place to study or work quietly, or just to meet friends for coffee. They brew delicious coffee and offer a number of espresso drinks and food items. I hope to try their food sometime (they have a quiche that smells so good, but I'd just eaten the last time I visited), but since I haven't done that yet, all I can speak for is the coffee and the ambience -- it's great.
