So I will start by saying that this is my first ever experience with a moving company. I needed to move over Memorial Day weekend. From a storage unit and then to my new 2nd floor apartment. I opted to hire 3 guys so they could get it done within the 2 hour minimum that you are required to pay. They got it done fast and efficient! I stood back and watched as they loaded my storage unit into the truck in 20 minutes! Then on to the new apartment and the unload took approximately 40 minutes; mostly due to the stairs. Everything arrived safe and sound. The 3 guys were very friendly and careful to make sure things were placed where I wanted. My move was probably a four mile trip. I was on the main floor moving to a second floor with a reserved elevator. We had complications when we arrived at my new place but it was a HOA problem. The guys were nice, ultra friendly and respectful. But my move was a disaster due to a lot of miscommunication, which sometimes is just bound to happen. I'm not going to go into details, but I will say that the owner bent over backwards to try to make things right. I respect him and the company for that. I would definitely use again for small moves. Response to Owner: Sir, in all due respect your service deserves less than one star which I am changing my review to. I wasn't going to give you what I thought you deserved because I know how reviews can hurt a business, but due to your response, I will follow your lead. It should have taken LESS than 2.5 hours with 3 GUYS and the biggest items being 1 small loveeat, a brand new bed and 5 drawer dresser, and small dining room table being the largest items. 10 medium sized boxes, an oversized bean bag chair and a bike. I attempted to cut you some slack in my original post by saying you did try to make things right, but honestly that was only after I threatened to leave reviews on Angie's list, Yelp and Google of your unfinished job! I told you the day before that I would need the packing and materials, thats a full 24 hrs in advance, but when your guys arrived THEY KNEW NOTHING ABOUT THAT. They had NO materials, and did absolutely NO packing. It quickly turned into a labor only job which happened to be the SAME PRICE as the all-inclusive job. They did shrink wrap my dresser, so there is that. The guys apologized for YOU, and said they would take anything I COULD PACK MYSELF by the time they got done with loading the larger items. Thanks. I would have had everything packed myself, but since I was paying $165 per hour for all inclusive, why would I? Your guys also took a 20 min. break too, so they really did about 1.5 hours worth of work to be honest, but I do understand your 2 hr minimum. I told you in my request for a quote that it was 3 flights of stairs and no elevator. I also told you that the storage which was indoor had a 13 ft clearance and you said your truck was 12.5, it wasn't. It wouldn't fit, so there was another 20-25 minutes trying to figure out how they were going to get my things into my storage. You also didn't tell them that I had changed from a residence to a storage two days prior (which you confirmed) but they still had the original order. THEY promised that someone would show up the next day and have my stuff done "lickety split". When I didn't hear anything by 9am the next day, I txt'd you, you were abrasive and short-tempered. You treated me like I had done something wrong! It was 9am and you said you would send 2 guys over, around 3pm and IT WOULD COST ME AN ADDITIONAL $110.00 an hour. By that time I was in tears overwhelmed and distraught with what your company did NOT do and I had left to do. I had to be out that day! You THEN agreed to labor only, and for free but I had to provide all the boxes etc that I had already paid for in your all-inclusive price! I went to buy the shipping supplies and while doing that decided to rent a U-Haul and just get it done myself. It was doable, it would just take a lot longer, and I risked hurting myself since my family and friends were busy. I ended up moving all by myself and it took 4 hours, but I lightly packed boxes, and got it done. So please don't complain about your 3 undeserved stars. Not to mention that your guys promised to lay down a chair cover cloth on the ground for my box spring but left the cloth in its packaging and thrown in the storage unit. A gash in the front of my brand new headboard which I asked to NOT be laid on its side for scuffs, which is guess where.... on its side.. my couch which was also recently purchased had been dragged across the floor, the edge frayed and dirty! My table which had been imported from China and custom made and which I've had protective padding (one of the guys remarked how cool the covering was) was slapped on a cart with no protection and items stacked on top of it face down! When I asked them to please not do that they said the cart had rubber on it so it was protected. Then they stacked it in the storage unit faced up and with boxes and other items on top of it. It was the most horrible moving experience ever. My furniture ruined, and no sir, I didn't tell you about the damage because I just knew you were going to deny it, and I honestly didn't want to deal with you guys or the headache anymore. Sure you could move stuff for me again, I would use you for a small trash removal job in a heartbeat. While you did to attempt to fix things, it was after I called YOU and your help was at YOUR convenience, not mine, who you had wronged from the start. Update. The business offered to move me from my storage to my new home for free. I declined but I do think that is pretty epic and generous. So, I am upgrading from 1 star to 4; which is 1 above my original 3. read more

A 3-person crew loaded my home into 5 storage containers on my driveway. The crew was polite, hard working, great problem solvers and wonderful to work with. They were careful with my household goods and furniture and packed the containers efficiently. The condition of the containers I rented (from another company) were in pretty bad shape and the GrassRoots crew helped me identify issues to communicate back to the storage container company. I am hiring GrassRoots again to unload my containers into my new place. Everything with Grassroots was very quick, responsive and went above expectations. Juan and Alfonso did an amazing job getting us moved into our new place. They wore masks the whole time to ensure everyone's safety and then they powered through the job quickly without damaging anything. With having to unload a POD and load onto their truck, drive it around the corner up towards my apartment and unloading everything again into the new apartment, they very positive, speedy and friendly. They even made sure a huge couch got into one of our bedrooms despite the difficulty in fitting it through multiple doorways! With an owner of that integrity, I can see why most folks who move with GrassRoots have five-star experiences from start to finish. ____________________________ Original post for posterity: I give three stars because I don't think necessarily shouldn't use them, especially if you only own items that are easy to move, but I won't personally be using them again based on my experience. The pros: - The movers were super friendly toward me, if a bit boisterous (I saw one of my neighbors looking thru the blinds to see what all the noise in the courtyard was and felt a bit embarrassed, but they seemed to have a good time moving stuff) - Nothing broke and everything was mostly unscuffed, as much as is realistic. - Consistently asked me how I felt things were going. - Very responsive to messages in any format. - Took the last 15 mins of the move or so off the clock because they were struggling to put the legs of my sofa back on and recognized the delay. The cons: - Super late; my scheduled time was 2:30 and we started at 4. They were very apologetic and explained that the previous job had run much longer than expected, but that still really sucked. - Job took 3 and a half hours for a one bedroom moving 4 miles away. Part of this was because they did not have the equipment needed to dismantle furniture to the extent that was necessary for my large couch. Between all the time trying to get all the legs off and trying out different screwdrivers (and asking me if I had one because the two they were using were on their last legs) I imagine having a proper drill & full bit set would have saved at *least* a half hour. I'll grant that I own a good amount of things and my sectional is definitely a pain to move through my building's doors, but I still would not have imagined it would take this long, which wasn't helped by the job having begun 90 minutes later than I expected. - Possibly not on the company themselves, but their truck had a bunch of super Jesusy / pro life / etc bumper stickers; this combined with one of the first questions one of the movers asked being whether I had a wife / girlfriend made me feel a bit uncomfortable as a queer person. - The movers also looked at / made remarks about a few women throughout the move and while they weren't directly engaging / catcalling, it still seemed a Iittle off-putting and unprofessional, and made me glad I was not a woman myself. - The truck was way, way bigger than it needed to be, and based on pricing from other vendors, I would wager this considerably bumped the hourly rate. Some of this is obviously personal to me and I don't want to unduly kick down a small business, but I do want others to hear this experience so they can incorporate it into their judgement in choosing a mover. Grassroots seems like a very human operation driven by genuine people, and I gather that the vast majority of customer experiences are not like mine. But a nearly $1000 local move (incl gratuity) that started 90 minutes late is enough by itself to make me not personally want to use them for a second time. read more

I found Grass Roots on Google after getting some very high quotes from other companies. They moved me from Aurora to Colorado Springs for half the price of other companies. They ended up coming an hour later than my scheduled time but they called ahead of time to let me know they had a delay at the other place they were moving so no big deal, I appreciated the communication. Geoff and his team were fantastic and I highly recommend them for your next move. I had to move things from 2 locations that were on opposite ends of the city to a place in between. Of the 3 movers I called, Geoff was the only one to recommend 2 teams to start at the same time at the different locations. This took a 7 - 9 hour move down to 3 - 4 hours. He was professional and knowledgeable and his price was reasonable, so that's why I chose Grass Roots. I was not disappointed. One team was right on time. The other time was running a little late, but Geoff was very responsive with the team's ETA. There have been previous movers I have paid by the hour that I felt they were stringing out the job. Not with these guys. All of the guys were hard workers and very fast. There was a slight mechanical issue with one of the trucks. The only reason I mention it is because things happen sometimes. That's life. It's how the company reacts that matters. Geoff and his team were extremely responsive to the issue and kept me informed as to what was going on. It couldn't be fixed fast enough, so Geoff engaged the other team that was already done with their part of the move to come get the items out of the broken truck. The entire team of 4 then came to the new house to get the remaining items moved very quickly. Although the mechanical issue did cause a delay, my move was still completed well before it would have been had I only had 1 team working. And of course the time related to the mechanical issue was not charged to me. Geoff was very fair about the time and the cost. Geoff also followed up with a text thanking me for my patience and apologizing (again) for the delay. He really understands customer service. I've lived in 7 different houses in the last 2-1/2 years so I've had my fair share of experiences with moving companies. These guys get 2 stars because all of our stuff made the move to the new house (15 min drive away) and they did a good job wrapping the larger pieces. We needed to move over Memorial Day weekend which I know is a busy moving weekend (as we had called several other movers based on yelp reviews and they were booked already), so their big truck was booked already but he offered the option using the smaller truck and open bed trailer for our move and estimated the job to take around 4.5-5 hours @$140/hr for 4 guys. The more the marrier as it should get the job done faster. We also contacted with him to make two other runs to friend's houses after the main move to get a few other pieces of furniture. I won't bore you with every excrutiating detail, but they were by far the slowest, most inefficient movers I've ever hired. They would walk out carrying one box, small stand or photo when other movers would have taken a dolly and gotten three boxes. After 2 hours and only about 1/3 of the way done loading up the old house, we mentioned that it seemed to be going slower than expected, we were told that he could pack up and leave now if we wanted- not great customer service. When unloading into the new house, there were several items that they said 'would not fit' in the basement down the stairs (didn't even try the couch or offer suggestions on other options.. We ended up hiring another moving company to come for an hour and they moved the couch downstairs through a large window with no problems). The job ended up being closer to 8 hours and at the end he said they would not be making the extra hired runs to our friends houses. Uh thanks for the notice. We got a text at the end of the day saying something along the lines of "aren't you glad we kept the job under $1000?" Nope.. Was hoping for the 4.5-5 hrs ($700) that you had bid on. I ended up hiring them for the job for several reasons: + They were super responsive to my initial request. + They were available on short notice and didn't seem too concerned that the window of time had to be a little flexible. + The quoted cost was reasonable. After all that I was more than pleased with the service I received day-of: + They were early. + They brought a big truck. + They had stuff to cushion my giant glass-framed poster. + They carried it all the way into a back room of my house so that my husband wouldn't be able to discover it. So glad that I went with my gut on this one! These guys are incredible and I'd hire them again in an instant. The two movers I had were excellent, fast, and went beyond what I expected. Despite having to climb a flight of stairs at both locations, with extremely overstuffed heavy boxes full of books, they never slowed down and never complained. Forgive me, guys. I have to report on what I think is the honest truth about my experience, and while it was borderline good/great, it was not "Woohoo! As good as it gets!"...not this time. So I beg your forgiveness for being honest. I'm still a fan. First off, I'm not sure what is going on with "A Simple Move"s business still being open; because I'd swear Geoff told me they were changing the name of the business to GrassRoots Moving. And yet not only are both businesses still open to comment on, but they both have websites and different phone numbers. Almost like it's 2 different businesses with 2 different sets of people...(rubs chin)... innnnnnnteresting. The day of my recent move came and the crew found me 90% packed and struggling to get the last 10% done, which took about 3 hours. The other 90% was packed and for the most part (about 98%), that did not slow the crew down from moving things into the truck. I was even offered a beat-up old wardrobe box to dump things into, which was kind of them. Trying to cut down on the length of this, there were a few things that kept this experience from being perfect: 1) Communication - It took a few days to hear back from Geoff after I put in my initial request via phone -- I ended up having to follow up on their website a few days later. Their website at least promises a 24-hr turnaround for responses and I did get that -- after the query on the website. 2) Break duration - I'm not gonna begrudge someone a break. Especially not movers moving during the summertime. The lead mover, Butch, told me the 1st time he and the crew were gonna take a 5 minute break; I fully agreed to it. It was 10 minutes. The 2nd break that was taken was about 15 minutes and I wasn't really informed of it. So that's 20 mins at $110/hr, or $35, that I paid for. Suddenly I don't feel so bad about the 10% tip I gave at the end, because with the above, that's 15%. 3) Placement of boxes - I understand when people move things on dollies, they're going to stack boxes 5-6 feet high. But 80-90% of those boxes were carefully labeled on the top. Either the boxes could have been stacked so that boxes destined for the same room could have been brought in the same trip, or at least the stacks could have been left where the location on the top box was labeled. Nope -- sometimes things were where they should be, and other times not. It's bad enough when it's banker boxes; worse when it's 2 or 3 foot high boxes packed with heavy stuff that needs to be dragged to a separate room. I might be able to overlook #3, were it not for the fact that my b**** of a new apartment mgr wouldn't let us use the front door in their new, shiny looking lobby to move trucks and dollies in. I'd understand that behavior if it was rainy and the wheels were all muddy and grimy, but no -- they put us through inconvenience to preserve their appearances. So...we had to go about 80 feet down an underground parking ramp, pull a u-turn and go about 90 feet down a hallway to an elevator that they locked off (thank god), and then up to my place. So each trip was 200 feet. Each way. 1 round trip = 400 feet. Times...I'm guessing...50-60 trips. Total trip for people who were already fatigued: 4-5 *miles*. Versus a trip through the lobby that would have been about 40% that. In order to hustle and keep down costs, I helped them move loads as well. I'm in my 40s, with not the strongest back in the world and a foot arch issue. So I was not in good shape after the move. And then the next day, I had to pick up and/or move around those heavy boxes MORE. See why #3's an issue now? :/ 4) This seems like a minor issue, but...I asked for a 20' truck. In retrospect I'm glad they had brought the 24'. But I made that reservation well in advance. Geoff told me "3 movers discounted rate of $110 n hr cash only discount, gratuities appreciated, will handle everything with care, 20ft truck" - shouldn't have been any reason I didn't get the size truck I asked for. I just checked "A Simple Move"'s site and they are advertising 3 men for $99/hr with their website coupon. Doesn't specify what length truck they are offering though; perhaps they are a cheaper service to use? If they are both handled by Geoff, you might want to inquire into this. On a scale of 1-10 for an easy move, this was about a 3 -- not due to the movers by any means. They worked hard and admirably; and even though they had another job AFTER mine that afternoon, they did not sacrifice care for my belongings - pretty sure everything I had was moved without a scratch or scrape or any breakage. I paid in cash (which they like)...with tip, $780 for 6.5 hrs of hard labor (which should have been 5-5.5 hrs). A far cry from when I reviewed under ASM in April 09 and moved for $420. :o But I would definitely recommend them -- Butch, James and Joey (I thought he was 22-23 and skinny; he's 16!!) did a fantastic job under trying conditions. Pricing: Because I only had a handful of items to move and mainly hired the movers to transport a washer/dryer and heavy kitchen table they offered an excellent price and beat out the competition significantly. Timing: Very accommodating! I called at the beginning of the week and they squeezed me in on my requested dated and time. They even called to offer an earlier time, which worked even better for my schedule. Service: The movers were personable, professional, friendly and did an excellent job. They did not drag the time of the move out since I was paying by the hour, which has been my experience with other companies. The first time was to move from one house to another and the second was to get a refrigerator that wouldn't fit through the doorway over a counter and into my kitchen. Both times the movers were friendly and professional. They really worked with us to get us what we needed. When a small problem arose, they were understanding and resolved the issue immediately. I was recommended GrassRoots by a coworker, who had them move her house a few months ago, a friends house about a month ago, and several other friends of their (needless to say - they came highly recommended). GrassRoots was easy to confirm an appointment, and when we wanted to reschedule to push back our date - no problem! The guys arrived and all were super courteous (as promised by my friend). We weren't as prepared as we wanted to be for the move, but the guys were great at moving things out. The service was exemplary - we took 3 large truck loads worth of stuff. My only comment would be when taking furniture in and out of the house to add blankets to them to avoid any possible scratching. They added blankets/padding in the truck, but I would ask that they add this to their procedure. If I had asked them to do this, the guys would've done it in a heartbeat - they were SO friendly and accommodating! I should've just asked! I will definitely be recommending their services to my friends and if I have any additional moving needs, will be calling them again. Again - their service was exemplary - top notch! We hired GrassRoots for our move last weekend. Moving from a 2 bedroom upstairs apartment to a single story house, approximately 8 miles. RJ, John and Alfonzo arrived and assessed our rooms and boxes. They went right to work carefully moving all of our belongings, strapped to their backs of all things (we've never seen anything like that) but they explained how it's safer for our boxes as well as better for their backs! These 3 gentlemen were professional, strong, friendly, hard working, careful and efficient. They wrapped all our furniture in plastic wrap, which was nice as it didn't require me to take our clothes out of drawers. They had us entirely moved in 4 hours, placing couches, tables, beds etc. exactly where we wanted them. We felt the cost was extremely fair as it sure saved us a lot of work and time. We don't plan on moving for a very long time, if ever, but if we do we'd definitely hire them again! Wish we could give them more than 5 stars! read more
