I LOVE THIS LITTLE SHOP SO MUCH! The donuts are tasty, yeasty and amazing! Their prices are so reasonable even in this economy! I had just moved to the area and was picking up donuts to take to work. I wasn't aware they are cash only. It was 6 in the morning and I placed my dozen order with the employee. When it came time to pay, he let me know it was cash only as I was handing him my card. I was embarrassed, and offered to go get cash, but the young gentleman was so nice and let me take the donuts. He told me to come to pay for them when I the time so I wouldn't be rushing. I came to purchase two old fashioned donuts during my donut tour in Long Beach. The donuts looked a bit darker in color than the golden brown I am use to, but I was still willing to give them my business. As I was telling the guy which donut I wanted, I mentioned to him that he broke the donut. He then got upset, perhaps because he was having a bad day or business was bad. At 10am on a Saturday, the case was brimming with every classic donut flavor you could hope to find, as well as croissants, cinnamon rolls, and other pastries. $10 for a dozen! I got a Cinnamon Sugar cake donut, which was acceptably moist and had good flavor. This donut would pair perfectly with coffee, but unfortunately their brewed coffee was burnt and bitter. I saw Granny's donuts as I was driving to get gas this morning and immediately pulled over. I LOVE donuts and donuts made by granny??! Come on!! I was immediately greeted as I looked over the displays of donuts and pastries. All the the goods were lined up and displayed neatly (definitely by someone who took pride in their product). I picked out a raised chocolate glazed donut and some donut holes. The price for these delicious pillow clouds was ridiculously low. I went out to my car and enjoyed freshly fried donut bliss. I've been stopping in at Granny's Donuts for as long as my friend has lived in Long Beach - over twenty years. It is about a 15 minute walk from his home on Molino, and I love waking up early and going over for java and a couple of her wonderful sweet rounders. In younger days I would splurge and get a half dozen, but these days health discipline is more important, so I set limits. The Old Fashioned and Strawberry glazed cake donuts were as I remembered them. Thick, crunchy sweet glaze and fresh dough within. So hard to eat just two. The hot Joe was good as a washdown. People came in and out as I sat at the corner table. There was a friendly word for everyone, regardless of the language spoken. She knew them all. If time permits before returning east, I will go again to cement my relationship with Granny and make my sweet tooth happy. read more
