Pots of free unlimited kimchi at each table
    Jane C.

My Korean parents are picky when it comes to food, and nowhere does that show up than with their own cuisine. So when they give their mark of approval to a Korean restaurant, I know it must be good. The name of the restaurant - Halmae Bapsang - translates to Grandma's Food Table, and that's quite literally what you should expect here. The owner is a sweet and fiercely joyful elderly woman who visits each table, sometimes to bring you your order or to wish you a happy meal. Our family ordered from all over the menu, and everything was markedly fresh. The cold noodles - whether in a broth or the spicy mixed version - are refreshing and chewy, while the kalguksu (or hot noodles) are filling and comforting. My mom is a particularly big fan of their dumpling soup, and I had the privilege of watching one of the chefs hand-making a new batch of dumplings. They are packed tight with filling and delicious. My own go-to order of hot stone bibimbap was spectacular (to note: they also have regular bowls of bibimbap for a few dollars cheaper). It's served with a squeeze bottle of gochujang so you can make it to your own spice level, and served with a bowl of rich ox bone soup. I tend to judge a restaurant's bibimbap by how crunchy the bottom layer of rice can get in the hot stone bowl, and the socarrat achieved here is tremendously charred and crunchy, adding the most amazing texture in this mixed rice dish. Orders are delivered to the table, but clean-up and retrieving or refilling water glasses are left up to the customers. This serves as a plus for two reasons - one, you don't have to wait on anyone for dining needs, and two, tip is optional. In fact, when my sister attempted to leave a customary 20% tip, the owner waved her away saying, "No, no, that's too much!" There are just a few tables and chairs, and a pretty small parking lot adjacent to the restaurant (as well as limited paid street parking right out front). Vibes here are small, simple, and cozy - just the way you'd expect it to be at grandma's place.

Stopped here on our way to NJ and very happy we were able to try the clam kalguksu, fried dumplings, and kimchi. The clam kalguksu was very clean tasting with ~10 fresh clams and nice toothsome knife cut noodles. It came in a big stainless steel bowl that I didn't think I'd finish, but it was light enough that I was able to eat it all without feeling too full. Fried dumplings were tasty, hot and crispy - only 4 came in an order. The kimchi came in a generous portion and had a nice bite that was not too acidic, spicy or sour - some of the best I've had in recent memory. Service was fast and the space is clean and well -kept. Self serve water station, self bus, and reasonable prices. Street parking was easy around 5pm on a Friday. Looking forward to returning after crossing the GW bridge on the way to NJ!

This place is clean and service was quick. Here, you put your plates on the counter after you are done your meal. I got the steamed dumplings with meat and the plain handmade noodle soup. The dumpling is definitely handmade with a good amount of scallion, the downside is that it is pretty pricey for only 8. The noodle soup was clean with a slight beef flavor. Def get the noodle soup!!

Came here for dinner and ordered a bibimbap and it was delish. Homey ambiance with benches, nothing fancy. The service is self-serve and grad your food from the counter. Street parking is very limited and hard to get so it might be a hassle to get there, so might not be able to visit again in the future due to logistics and not by taste, too bad : (

Delicious kalguksu! You order at the front and sit down once you receive your order. We got the steamed dumplings and 2 orders of kalguksu: clam and spicy beef. They also give you a whole big pot of kimchi! Very quiet for 8pm on a Sunday night. Only two tables at the restaurant.

Don't sleep on this small korean restaurant. The restaurant is an order at the counter and sit and eat kind of joint. It wasn't too crowded when we went but you can see into the kitchen and see the chef's working hard to quickly serve your food. You're first presented with a huge pot of kimchi as your starter banchan. The dumplings are a must! They were steamed to perfection. We got the clam and spicy beef kalguksu and they were both delicious. Not too salty with a ton of underlying flavor.

Cozy place. Owner is very sweet and very attentive. The food is so reasonably priced. The seafood pancake is the best I have had. The galbi was very flavorful and the hand made dumplings were also excellent. The cold noodle seemed to lack some flavor. The hand made noodle was good but also needed more flavor. Overall a great at home feeling and very enjoyable dinner.

This is a cozy, casual spot run by a grandma. The food was delicious, and the menu was simple. It's mostly self-serve, but the owner was very attentive and came out to check on the tables regularly. They also give out a small pot of kimchi per table. We'll definitely come back to try the mandu!

Grandma's Bapsang is a homey spot for heartwarming Korean food! Their kalguksu, mandu, and jigaes are all great! The gukbap has a really unique umami flavor so I'd recommend it if you like this dish! The clam kalguksu has a different broth than the regular one so if you like clams I'd recommend it. The mul mandu are really satisfying little bites! Next time I'll have to try the soondubu. I ordered by menu number but I think they misheard me so I ended up with a different dish. Everything is good so no complaints but it might be good to double check your order if you ordered by number or in English instead of Korean. The grandma is super kind and friendly and there is a lot of care in the food. Highly recommend for a casual spot with yummy Korean food!

Just had the Seafood noodles here. So good. The staff was very friendly and helped me picked something that didn't have beef or pork. I was just sad that they didn't offer any dumplings without pork or beef. I don't eat beef or pork and was as hoping to have some veggie or shrimp dumplings. Hopefully they'll offer those in the future. Highly recommend this place nevertheless.

Cold buckwheat noodle combo, short rib, loved it.

Stopped in today, I was craving mandu, yes Italians love mandu. Great service and amazing food, cant wait to go back

Super delicious knife-cut noodles for a snowy day. All the soups come in big bowls, and takeout containers at the front if you want to take leftover broth home. The halmoni/grandma there is super sweet and might ask you how your meal is, please protect her at all costs and be nice!! :') Also please note that it is self service but sometimes the workers will bring stuff out for you if they're not doing anything else. Establishment is clean, and I love their kimchi there - I can't believe they don't charge extra for it and let you refill as much as you like (I wouldn't be surprised if they changed that soon). Clam kalguksu: Comes with a dipping sauce for your clams. The broth itself is sweetened naturally by the clams, and the noodles have an intrinsic flavor that also soaks up the flavor and saltiness of the soup well. The texture is just as soft and chewy as I like. Mandu Yukgejang: Comes with a bowl of rice. The lady will warn you that it's spicy, but if you're good with spicy food it'll be fine. Love all the softened green onion and gosari namul (korean fernbrake) in there. There is some shredded beef and glass noodles in there, but not a crazy amount. I loved eating the dumplings because the fillings get extra juicy after boiling in the soup for a bit. Overall I was the most impressed with the clam kalguksu. I inhaled it so fast I choked lol. I was kind of nervous about writing a rave review because I don't want people to come in with super high expectations (and put pressure on the sweet lady who works there). I came in not expecting anything too crazy, and I was pleasantly surprised. Super satisfied and happy right now and I don't feel icky/bogged down by the meal, so the food feels very clean. Definitely coming here again, even if it's just to eat alone. :)

Finally got to try this place I heard so much about on a Christmas day with wife because it was…read morefrigid and we wanted a warm bowl of Korean "tang"(soup). Finding parking is quite challenging given the location on a busy commercial street, so make sure you can come earlier than meal time to have better luck. They have waiting seats OUTSIDE so yeah I suppose it's quite popular at times. 1. ATMOSPHERE (3/5) - This location is small and it's pretty straightforward place. But I still found it cozy, with decent amount of seating (I think it can handle 15-20 max) and little details like wall with wood ledges and coat hangers were a nice touch. Seating was comfortable, though we tied our down parkas around our waist as another party had hung theirs on our side of coat hangers. 2. FOOD (4/5) - We dove right in to try their famous gejang (~Korean raw crab "ceviche") and ordered two of their namesake gookbap (rice with soup) to see how they are. Here's how it went down. - Gejang (App, $20, 2/5) - I had a hunch that on a holiday perhaps I should not order this, but my craving for succulent crab flesh be damned, I went for it and unfortunately, the meat was not well-marinated as I had feared. Gejang is a dish that has to sit in the complex soy-based pickling liquid for some time... and if restaurant is too busy churning them out or if it's slow season they won't do this properly. It not only wasn't fully marinated, I think the marinade was off because the spiciness was way out of balance and was overpowering. Perhaps knowing that it didn't have enough time to marinade the kitchen put extra diced jalapenos to compensate? Because that's exactly what it tasted like - you can't fool me. I tried to salvage the dish by asking a confused-looking girl server for some sugar, but yeah, can't un-do the overpowered marinade with sprinkling of sugar. This was really unfortunate as I was looking forward to a good bite. - Ahjae Gookbap (Main, $18, 5/5) - Thankfully, their namesake gookbap was spot-on to salvage our dining. Generous slabs of succulent beef on the bone and off the bone was swimming in a hearty beef/bone broth that tasted clean and focused. Portion was good, and can I say their banchan of fish cake moochim & unfermented kimchi & ggakdugi(radish kimchi) simply ROCKS? That was some serious deliciousness and dare I say value at $18 at a day and age where hamburger costs over $10! You win at life by ordering this! 3. SERVICE (4/5) - Our server girl was attentive and food came out early on though later it was a bit hard to get her attention promptly. We found ourselves putting hands in the air, and wavin' like we don't care... for a little while. They provide gloves & metal bin for gejang which was a nice touch for people to keep their fingers clean. One thing I'd like to mention: Plastic cup they served water in was all chipped on the rim so we instead went and got water from their hot & cold water dispenser which had metal cups (as many korean restaurants do). I'd suggest them to replace all these old plastic cups with metal ones for health reasons. Overall, we were satisfied with our meal. I'd chock up the gejang mishap to it being a holiday. I hope chef was just off with the marinade that day because I am a certified gejang pro(I catch and make my own) and that balance ain't it. But I will give it another try during warmer month and we'll definitely be back to try sooyook moochim, oyster jeon & other great soup offerings.

Ordered three things: 1) marinated crabs, small size (5/5). Always a must-get here. 2) ddukbaegi bulgogi (4.5/5) - Thinly sliced prime marinated beef ribeye casserole with rice cake and glass noodle and mushroom served in a sizzling hot pot. Really flavorful and so good to have on a cold day. 3) ahjae ppyo jjim (4.5/5) - Braised prime beef meat bones in soy reduction with carrots, radish, dates, chestnut, rice cake and glass noodles. We got non-spicy. It came in a HUGE bowl. Definitely meant to be shared with a group. Took leftovers home and it was still yummy the next day mixed with knife-cut noodles I had at home.

Perfect for the coldest days! At first glance, the restaurant's exterior and interior may not be the most alluring and modern, but the family-owned business is simply what it is. No flashing lights - just straight up sharing of good, healthy, homey meals. They're mostly known for their Soondae Gook ($15) with the original soondae, but I prefer their Soondae Gook with their veggie soondae (white colored soondae; not necessarily vegetarian) b/c I'm not comfortable with the aspect of "blood sausage." You'll have to specifically request all veggie soondae's in your Soondae Gook. If you're not up for Soondae Gook, their Seollung Tang (deep boiled bone broth soup w briskets and noodles; $15) is also good. Again, nothing too crazy, but homey... much of which reminds me of what my mom or grandma would cook at home. Enjoy!
