SO many salons are inconsistent in creating such a vibe. The staff took their time in painting my nails using several coats for a longer lasting manicure. They also gave me a recommendation on how to help keep my cuticles healthy. And there was fun music piping in - Lady Gaga and Michael Jackson. My wife recently went to Grand Nails for a manicure and pedicure, and the experience was honestly terrible. During her pedicure appointment, another customer came in asking to fix a damaged gel nail. Instead of asking that customer to wait until the current appointment was completed, the technician repeatedly bounced back and forth between that customer and my wife's service. What made it worse was that my wife politely explained multiple times -- at least three separate times -- that the interruptions were ruining her experience and making her feel rushed and ignored. Nothing changed. The technician continued doing the same thing despite being told directly how frustrating it was. A manicure and pedicure is supposed to be relaxing, but this felt chaotic, inattentive, and disrespectful to a paying customer's time and experience. My wife left upset instead of relaxed, and she has already said she will never return. Very disappointing customer service and poor appointment management. read more

The woman who did my pedi on 3/21 cut the toenail on the great toe too short, causing swelling, redness and pain within two days of getting the pedi. I was told that both sides of the nail are ingrown nail. I am now on oral antibiotics and have to go to a podiatrist to get the nail removed. I'm not happy with this place, to say the least. read more

As of this review writing, they have installed new chairs that are quite comfortable and functional. They have some new staff along with some veterans and the service is quite good. Firstly, everyone at this salon is so friendly. They introduce themselves and then asked for my name. This never happens to me lol. They're all just really sweet and on my way out, I said bye to everyone working. Just a really friendly space to be in. Made my day. Attention to detail is their specialty amongst so many other things. Amy shaped my nails to perfection and got my nails in mint condition for Jenny to come in and finish the dip powder process. If you're in rush, maybe make that known. They really care about the work they do so it does take time. I personally love that they take the extra time and I wasn't in a rush but if you are, just say something. I'm sure they also do an amazing job when working fast. I overheard someone say they were in a rush and they got her out of there fast. They take walk ins and appointments without seeming to compromise anyone's appointment. Cleanliness!!!! They have plastic in the pedicure chair bowls, and I saw them scrub them each time someone left. Dip powder is put in a separate container!!! Tools are clean and come out of a plastic bag. I showed Jenny a picture of what I wanted and even offered some other cute ideas that I want to try next time. She truly knows what she doing and I'm so happy I found this place. I also saw Amy and Annie and another female (I didn't catch her name) giving deluxe pedicures and grown men were literally groaning because of good of leg/foot massages they were giving. Grand nails is my go to spot in Oakland! They have always been very kind, polite, and professional, which I greatly appreciate. Most recently, they squeezed me in for a last minute manicure about 2 days before my wedding. Although doing my nails kept them working about 5 minutes past closing, they were very accommodating. I loved my wedding nails and I received sooo many compliments! People couldn't tell that 3 of the nails had tips added to compensate for the natural nail being short/broken. Not feeling great about my last visit. I came in for an appt I thought I had, to be greeted a little coldly by the owner. She told me my appt was the day before, which I know was not because I always schedule appointments by saying the day of the week and the date. I was okay to get my nails done somewhere else - it was a scheduling error, no harm done - but she insisted that she could get someone 2 hours later. She looked really stressed out about me taking my business to a different salon, so I said I would come back in 2 hours. For those 2 hours, I walked around trying to kill time. I come in for my appt and towards the end, she rushed through my manicure to tend to someone else. She had her male friend, who I had never seen at the salon, finish my appt. It was the most uncomfortable experience I have had at a salon. He clearly was untrained, and I do not believe he was even a formal employee. He tried to give me a hand massage with a hot towel while we made awkward small talk, I just politely told him we could just end there. When I go to pay, he prints out the receipt which I sign and write in the tip on. Before I leave, he has the gall to lecture me on why I should pay cash, and proceeds to cross out my tip on the receipt. Everyone in the salon can hear how "they prefer cash so that they don't need to report it on their taxes", and all I could do is nod politely. I've been coming here for a whole year, and I have never been that loyal to any salon. If it was just the scheduling error and had the owner been more gracious about it, I'd probably go back - but come on, so many red flags. read more

Well, apparently Grand Nails has more than one Powder Dip specialist. Mary, my regular specialist was not in and Jenny did my dips for me. I interviewed her first to make sure she had been doing dip nails for awhile, and she assured me that I would not be disappointed. What I like about this place is they soak off your nails (unlike some salons who drill off the previous color). Everything went great from color removal with the soak off and gentle filing to complete old color removal to my final beautiful powder dipped nails. The two pictures tell the story. Kevin(manager) pushed my cuticles down so much that they hurt when anything rubs them. One is bleeding. I wasn't to happy with the job(fill+cut down+gel color) in the first place but a day later my nails look worse. There are so many bumps and lumps.
