I've gone here a few times and it's been fine but I just went and had the worst manicure of my life. The person who helped me got polish on my cuticles, the sides of my nails, and even on my fingertips. I figured she would clean it up at the end and she did a bit but it was so bad that when I pointed out all the issues, the owner had to come with an electric file and file down all of the excess polish -- and even then it STILL looked messy. You can see some of the polish left up to my cuticles in the photo. I wouldn't risk your $40 coming here -- cus after all that they still charged me the full price. Seems like a toss up if it'll be good or horrible. read more

Before arriving I made an appointment. I kept seeing Kevin's name throughout the reviews, so I figured ai better play it safe and book him. It was weird from the beginning. The woman who answered the phone sounded as if she had just awoken from a coma and when I made the appointment with her, she didn't even ask for my name. I literally had to ask, "do you need my name?". Anywho, upon arriving, it was a ghost town. Literally. I was shocked they had no customers on a Saturday afternoon. Again, weird. I've never known a good nail salon to have zero customers. I saw one man and one woman doing the nails of a mother and child. I assumed the man was Kevin, so I asked, "how long?". They informed me that "he" would be down soon. Immediately, he basically stomped over and pointed me to his station. He didn't say hello, smile, nothing. He grunted as if I was impeding on his nap or something. I tried to lighten the mood, "I read all about you on Yelp". Nothing. Then I asked, "are you having a good day?". He responds by saying, "yes. Thank you." At this point, I was honestly thinking that I needed to get up and walk out. But being new to the area, I only read about one other salon, that has decent reviews. Additionally, it was already 4PM, and i couldn't risk not being able to get my nails done. So I sat there. I told him what I wanted and he got started. Again, he didn't speak. At all. And it wasn't in the way where a person is just tired and doesn't feel like speaking. And I say this from experience, because I'm introverted. No, he legit acted as if he had an attitude and my being there was bothering him. But one small miracle: I was done in an hour. Great! Let me get the f*** outta here. I paid and took my black behind out. My nails are okay. Not great. But honestly, a lot better than what I was dealing with, I wont even front. Would I return? Hell no. Ive been looking for a new nail salon to go to and ive recently got into cat eye. I was walking by Phenomenails one morning and saw from their front door they had many more varities of cat eye colors that most places rarely have. Luckily i was able to do a walk in appointment as they werent too busy. But got busy right at the tail end of my session. I did a walk in on early friday afternoon and had a very specific design and color i wanted. This place had the color but i needed to confirm if they could do the deaign. The technician did a fantastic job catering to my needs and even explaining why they did what they did. On top of selecting this color, they mentioned they wanted to apply another colored coating so that the pink color cat eye i selected will be more aparrant when they finish. The golden heart was the dexor i wanted and they nailed it (pun intended)! It's been so long since ive been so happy with a session. I get compliments everywhere i go. I There was a guy who did my nails and from start to finish it was awful. He was rude, rough and not friendly to me or anyone else that walked in. I have been getting my nails done for a very long time and know how to ask for what I wan (nude pink base with a thick deep French tip). Not only was the color choices wrong every time he showed me a new color, he put three coats making it thick and said that it will make the color what I wanted. Then what did it for me was I asked for French tip and again I know how to ask for what I want. The first time wasn't thick enough, then the second time it wasn't shaped the way I wanted. He told me it wasn't gonna come out how I wanted because of the gel I got. That was the final straw for me. So I asked him to remove the polish from the one French tip nail he was doing and just paid for what was had. I will never step foot in this place again. read more

I have been coming to Phenomenails for maybe around a year or so since I've been living in this area of Oakland for around 3 years. There are a LOT of salons in the area, but none have been as consistent as Phenomenails in terms of quality of service and lasting power. I am a gel nail girl, and am fairly active with work as I type a lot and do some hand work for other physical activities. I've had some gel mani-pedis that have ended up chipping off easily, or peeling within the week of getting them done, but not so here! The staff is quick, efficient, and the music is never overbearing. I called 3 days in advance to make an appointment for 3 pedicures and manicures. They were able to accommodate us. We came and they were promptly ready for us. During our session, there were a lot of walk in and they told them to come back at a certain time to ensure they weren't rushing. So I really appreciated that. They took their time with my pedicure and manicure. How does this place have good reviews? Lol I've never had Gel X nails pop off in 5 hours until I came here! It's not on me since my last set lasted 3 weeks from another salon. The guy kept roughly yanking my arm to bring my hand closer and the blue light kept falling on my shoulder. As 3 nails popped off overnight I went back the next morning (had to cancel my plans) and they fixed it for me only to have 2 other ones pop off the same night, and the rest the following 2 days. Even worse while I was curing it under the lamp he got impatient and STARTED CUTTING HIS OWN NAILS in front of me with the same equipment!!! These must be fake reviews or a new owner cause ain't no way this place is 4.5 stars at the time of this review. When I called for a refund they kept trying to talk me back into returning a third time to get it fixed as if I had all the time in the world, knowing chances are they would pop off again. They only gave me a 50% refund initially and said they'd give me the rest of it if keeps happening (not surprisingly of course they kept coming out). That means if they miraculously didn't pop off they would've still been fine leaving me walking around with Frankenstein nails to keep 50% of the money. The salon itself just felt sticky and uncomfortably dirty too. Horrible experience!! read more

Wanted to love this place, but was completely underwhelmed. The Wait: made an appointment for 2 pedicures and a manicure. We waited for almost 30 minutes for them to be ready for us, and they never communicated that the wait would be so long. The Timing: Once we were seated, someone started right away on my friend's pedicure. I waited and eventually someone came and started my pedicure. Soaking the gel off of my fingernails came about 15 minutes after that. They should have started with me since I had 2 services and would take longer, and and they should have begun soaking my nails right away. The Polish: I chose a gel color for my fingernails and wanted the corresponding color for my non gel pedicure. I've had this color at other salons and know the set exists. After waiting for 30 minutes with my chosen color, I was told that they don't have the corresponding regular polish for any of the colors I wanted. I was not shown what sets they did have, and ended up just picking a random gray color for my toes that didn't match. The Manicure: I asked for rounded, and my nails were cut short and square. After correction, they were too short to shape well. On several nails, there is a line of nail that wasn't covered by gel on the side. It looks funny. I'd read the reviews, and wanted to love this place, but we were in there almost 2 hours, with a lot of waiting on both ends, and the manicure isn't great. read more

Been to this salon twice and overall it's not bad. My first time I walked in and got helped almost right away; I got a gel pedi and acrylic full set with gel (total was $105 with tip). The pedi was great! She really took her time with manicuring and painting and the end result was really nice and lasted well 4 weeks later. She also gave an awesome foot scrub and lotion massage. The acrylic full set with gel was more "meh". It was with a man who I think is the owner. The almond shape I asked for was crooked (maybe from the angle he was filing/looking at it like the point/tip was not centered) and there were some bubbles or spots with the paint that didn't make it to the edges of my nails and the tips weren't capped so they looked a little clear (I did a light nude/beige color). No lotion/or hand massage when done. When I got home, I re-filed half of my nails to get a consistent shape. I went back for an acrylic fill with gel ($45 with tip); made an appt but I was literally the only one there the whole time at 10am on a Friday. The shaping was a little better the second time, but many of the edges had lifted/didn't stay well after a couple of weeks. The painting was a better this time with a darker sparkly color. This was also with the same man/owner. I wanted to come in for Christmas Eve around 5 (their online hours said they could close at 7; this would be for another fill/third time) and they said they didn't know when they would close and said to call back later, but when I called they didn't answer. I drove past their store at 4:30 and they were still helping someone but their open sign was off. I think it's silly to make up your hours and they should just have told me they would be closed. Not sure, it just didn't sit well with me. This is an okay option if you want nail services and is very reasonably priced! They also take venmo which is convenient. I think I'll be back for a pedi but will skip the manis since the quality overall is not the best. read more

I feel like I walked into a secret nail spa. I had to keep looking at the door wondering why this place is not jammed packed. Within an hour I had new acrylic dip by the artist Kevin who helped recreate my nails with an eye for detail and color I haven't seen at other nail spas. My pedicure was by Tim aka Dr. Tim as I called him who helped rejuvenate and replace a toenail that fell off from running. My only wish is that I would have taken a before picture so you could see the difference from a week old manicure and pedicure. On top of that their space is so clean, calming, and tranquil. It was the most sloppy thickest uneven acrylics I've had in a while. He was rushing when no one was in the salon. Its like he just slap the powder on my nail and called it a day. Its my bad for not speaking up, but come on...Ive been getting my nails done for years so Im very particular. Anyways, wouldn't recommend acrylics from this business. I went in there five days ago for a simple gel, nail polish change on my toes and my hands. I didn't need any nails fixed and I had already removed the color from both my hands and feet. The total came out just for a nail polish change $60 just to have them chip in less than a week. This place, although they are courteous, their prices are rip off! I'm very upset, I got a gel manicure/pedicure last week. The next day a big hunk of my left thumb chipped off. The day after that, 5 more nails were chipped, this morning the polish on my left index finger is complexly gone. Less than 4 days and only 2 nails look like when I left the shop. I haven't done anything strenuous with my hands, just my regular routines. So disappointing and a waste of money. I expected them to last at least 1 full week but hoped they would last 2 weeks, that's why I paid extra for the gel polish. Other than that the service was really nice, it was a nice relaxing place that was very clean and the people were very nice. If my polish had lasted I would have been a repeat customer. read more
