Get in line, place your order, take your receipt, and find your own table. When your number is called, just pick up your food. When you're done, clean up after yourself and return everything where it belongs. 4. Complimentary tea or warm soy milk -- nice little touch, especially since many other places charge for it. I ordered 4 items and paid only $28. The same price I paid else where for just one dish. This is a no frills (and no tip!) experience Nothing is going to really wow you here, but if you just want to go somewhere and get a good meal, this place will do work and be very budget friendly. At one point in the summer, my wife and I were coming here every week until we exhausted their menu selections. Hours are very narrow. Only lunch time on Wed-Sun (Closed Mon and Tue). It's an older couple (?) running the restaurant, with one person holding down the kitchen, and the other person rotating between the register and the back of the house. There's a sign that says they have milk tea and soy milk available, but we've never had milk tea there. They've only had hot soy milk. It comes unsweetened, so add your own sugar. We've tried so many things here, but I would say the overall sentiment is the dishes are decent but very comforting (at least for me). The one standout is their clay pot rice dishes. This is a clean, casual Chinese comfort food place in the middle of Richmond. The owner is extremely nice and welcoming and the place has plenty of seating. The food is good, not great, but for the price, it's a great value. Our faves were the pork and preserved egg porridge with the Chinese donut (which was excellent), and the wonton soup. We also had the beef chow fun and the clay pot rice with spareribs and Chinese sausage. Both were good and filling. Overall the value is great and the food was good. What a great Chinese restaurant! I definitely will return to try other items. Today, we had beef chow fun, wonton noodle soup, haw gow, and spare ribs with black bean sauce. We ordered take-out and were told it would be about 15 to 20 minutes, but it only was 10 minutes. Each dish was very tasty and didn't make you thirsty later. The portion sizes were good and inexpensive. We got eight wontons in the noodle soup. The restaurant is super casual. You place your order at the counter and are called when it's ready. I found my new favorite HK cafe for lunch specials! Good experience. Great prices. I will be back soon. My husband wanted to check out a new restaurant so he found this place through Yelp. Good location right next to Target. I am shocked to see these kind of prices in the Bay Area! And food is made to order too.... Not your usual cafeteria food (like the Panda Express next door). This is a Hong Kong style cafe with authentic Chinese homey dishes that we love. I knew we found gold when I overhear an older Chinese lady telling her Chinese friend that they had recently discovered this place and really like it. And the typo on the wall saying "tree for Dine in customers only" is additional proof that this place is legit authentic... I mean, all authentic Chinese restaurants that I know of have mis-spellings on the menu . The sizzling rice is very impressive... let it crunch up a bit before you pour in the sauces so that there are more crispy bits! For $10.75 you get a meal with a bowl of soup and a drink. What a great deal. My husband got the beef chow fun. That was good too. I saw lots of people ordering noodles and porridge, so I will try those next time. So many choices! It is self service. You order, pay, and they assign you a number. 10-20 minutes later they will call your number and you go to the counter to pick up your tray of food. You can add sauces from the sauce counter if you'd like. When you are done, place your tray with dishes on the return tray station. The place is very clean too. Ordering was overwhelming lol it is easier for you to decide what you want and then tell the cashier the numbers of the order. Depending on what time you go, they may run out of certain items. Everything is very fairly priced and affordable. We waited about 25 minutes for food. Porridge was good and I got it with the chinese fried donut and it was so good and crispy. The beef chow fun was good too - not too oilly or salty. The cilantro rice roll is okay. I forgot what meat came with it. I used the rice roll sauce to dip the chinese donut in and then dipped it in the porridge.. best combo of flavor lol When you order, you get a complimentary hot soy milk, coffee or tea. I got soy milk - no sugar added. You can also get a soda for just $1 each. The staff is nice and very overwhelmed so be patient. You order at the counter and sit and wait. So don't expect too much. Packing my leftovers, I had to ask for containers. I wish they just had everything to pack leftovers out for folks because I felt bad for bothering the staff when I needed a plastic bag or a container. They had one type of container/take out box out on the side for you, but I needed the specific container for porridge leftovers and a plastic bag. Parking had plenty in the lot. Restaurant is located inside the Macdonald 80 Shopping Center (sandwich between A T & T store and Subway), this restaurant had limited selection for great price with most dishes costing less than $15.00. There's no table service; you order from the counter, gather your own utensils and find open seating. You do have to wait as everything is made to order. I tried their Beef Chow Fun and I'd prefer more color and less oil. It also didn't have the Asian "wok air" from the high heat but then again it's lot cheaper than the traditional fancier places. The woman at the counter was very friendly and courteous. When you order look at the large menu on the wall and let them know which item number you want. Updated review. There are definitely some hits and misses. Some dishes were not as flavorful but it may be so that it is easier for older folks to eat. Things I would get again: Clay pot rice and congee. These dishes were flavorful and worth trying. Things I would not get again: The stir fried noodle dishes. The noodles did not have enough of the traditional "wok hei" or aromatic stir frying flavor to them. The thin noodles were soggy. Best to get there earlier as the most recent time we went, they were running out of soy milk (around 11:45am). I like ordering their congee the most. Reminds me of the small shops in Hong Kong. My son loves their wonton and orders it every single time. You order first and then find a table. Once your order is ready, they will call your number to pick up your food. When you are done, they have a designated "tray return" area for you. Think IKEA food court. Extra sauce, water, seasonings, and to-go boxes are on the counter across from the "tray return". I also liked that their food is not oily or overly seasoned. If you want a stronger flavor, you may need to add them yourself. Owner and cashier were super friendly! This is a fairly new place, so they still have some kinks to work out. Go early because they do run out of certain items if you come later. The service is a bit slow, but friendly staff. The place is clean, everyone puts away their own trays similar to IKEA. No tipping and prices are like pre COVID, very reasonable. Few things I ordered: 1. Pan Fried Noodles, until it is actually fried to crispy, I don't think I will order this again. 2. Beef Chow Fun, it's good but not oily enough (some people might like dry). 3. Wonton Noodles, this one I will definitely order again, the wontons tasted good. 4. Clay pot rice, I would order this again, a little salty after added some soy sauce into the mix, but the burnt rice, who doesn't love burnt rice. 5. The Cheung Fun (Shrimp Rice Noodles), was a little thick, but taste like Cheung Fun to me, so would order again. Ordered the Century Egg Pork Porridge and Chicken/Egg Fried Rice to go, didn't eat it yet. Have a little patience, everything is made to order, so it takes a little time, 10-15mins to get your food. They give you free Tea or Soy Milk and Soup with the meal. So everything only came out to about $76. Had I gone somewhere else, probably all that would've cost at least $120 with tips. The server is so considering and provide me a regular spoon from restaurant, which mentioned using the regular big spoon is much easier to eat the porridge. Decided to try this place and see if it's any good. The customer service was nice and I was greeted and got my order taken care of right away. I decided to order the grilled porkchop plate with white rice and also the pork dumplings. The grilled porkchop was cooked well but lacked flavor and the plate itself was very underwhelming and lacked creativity. There was way too much rice and they put an entire hardboiled egg in there and two dried out pieces of broccoli. The plate needs a side salad to go along with it and maybe a sauce because the plate was very dry tasting. Now On to the pork dumplings WHAT THE HELLY was that?! Presentation wise the dumpling look amazing but the flavor was very lackluster and underwhelming. The pork inside tasted like unseasoned pork and there was just no flavor to it. The restaurant vibe is a do it yourself you order at the front, pay and then they'll call your number. So if you order multiple dishes you'll have to get up frequently. Terrible neighborhood eating over here in Richmond. There's a reason why the restaurants only open from 1030 to 2 or something like that. But the food quality is magnificent, and the service is very good. If you do have to be patient a little bit because a long line and they don't just have things ready. They make them to order. I happen to be with a fake friend who's so impatient he can't handle it. But it's worth the weight like anything of quality highly recommend the restaurant and the staff is magnificent. I was following the recent BUZZ about Grand Cafe and, like everything else, somethings, you just need to "find out about it for yourselves"....so for lunch today, I am so happy I did...!!! It's not conveniently located to me, but it is for my sister, so she, our other sister and I made a field trip out to Richmond; I'm back home now...I must say, it's NOT for everyone, but was for us, if you're looking for GREAT value and some decent "Cantonese home-cooked comfort food" that is guaranteed to satisfy a craving, and beats cooking it up, yourself....or having it cost DOUBLE of what we paid here.
