Dry egg noodles with broth is only served at this Vietnamese restaurant as far as I know in the East Bay. It's supposed to be a Vietnamese street dish. It is like a pho but dry. It's like a pho salad. It has tons of bean sprouts underneath the noodles and a lot of deep fried garlic pieces that make the noodles taste like Hong Kong crunchy noodles. At first I thought the egg noodles were fried. It was crunchy and there wasn't a lot of noodles but mostly a lot of sprouts and herbs. There were a lot of fatty barbecue pieces that I did not eat. I enjoyed one shrimp and one piece of squid. There were a ton of fake crab meat. The side soup was very nice and hot but had a taste of chicken fat and lots of salt and MSG. The noodle dish is extremely tasty and doesn't need any addition of soup. This was excellent on a hot day after a nice hike at Tilden Park. My husband ordered the same dish as me at my recommendation and loved it. My friend had their chow fun with seafood and barbecue. She enjoyed it and it was a generous amount so she took home half. This place is not shy about using MSG and the food is very salty and strong tasting. I find the dishes much cheaper than other Vietnamese restaurants. My dish was only $13.50. That's very cheap since it was full of herbs and seafood. Service is very efficient when they're not busy. No frills. Service is very slow when it's busy. Most of their customers are people who are coming here during their office lunch break during the weekdays. I noticed it was very quiet on a weekend. This is one of the more popular pho spots in El Cerrito, and that's not saying much. It's located on one end of a small strip mall so parking is a challenge during meal hours. The interior is larger than it seems from the outside. Besides the main dining room, there are 2 tables in the front, where we sat. Curiously, it seemed only one lady was assigned to our table as the other staff ignored us. Even when we asked for utensils, the same lady brought them to us. The food, in comparison to the LA area, was underwhelming. The shrimp and pork spring roll was likely premade and sat around because it came out very quickly, there was no flavor at all, and I couldn't see any pork whatsoever. The combination bun (vermicelli, #43 I believe) was decent. But the fish sauce they gave was more on the sweet side. They recommended the fried fish cakes. The pieces were very firm and appeared over fried. The sweet dipping sauce is a very typical one you'd expect to be served to western palates (think Panda Express) . We also got a combination large pho, which turned out to be a regular size in LA standards, for $17. It was average as the broth wasn't really flavorful. I didn't like the fact that our lady server came by with a POS terminal and just told me the total, with no itemized breakdown, while she brought an actual paper bill to other tables so they can actually see what they were charged. Luckily, I did mental math and it checked out. We definitely didn't appear to be their regular customers as I didn't see any other Asian diners there, which might be why this place got rated a 4 star. Companion was in the mood for Vietnamese food and suggested we try Huong Tra, since neither of us had been there. It's a busy spot with decent food at a reasonable price. We arrived in the evening, and there was a short wait. The restaurant is divided into two areas: one for dine-in and one for those waiting to be seated or with takeout orders. There are lots of comings and goings. In terms of the ambiance, it's a neighborhood spot with lots of friends, families, and couples. Decor is minimal and gives your typical neighborhood spot vibe. Service was fine, not attentive, just there to serve your food. We decided to share the Goi Cuon, Hu Tieu Mi Hai San, and Com Tay Cam Thap Cam. The summer rolls were good, fresh, and tasty. The egg and rice noodles with seafood we shared were light and filling. There was a good amount of noodles, broth, and protein--though some of the seafood was overcooked. The clay pot was fine. I'd never tried a clay pot before and found it was seasoned and packed with lots of filling. Overall, everything filled us up, but I didn't leave too impressed. Huong Tra is a longtime staple for Vietnamese cuisine in Richmond. I'd recommend it if you're in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. Huong Tra deserves all the hype. I've been coming here for about 13 years now, and it's worthy of sitting in traffic. Parking sucks. Good luck. I usually order the fresh spring rolls with shrimp, but they also offer it with shrimp and pork. The peanut sauce is decadent and just one cup is enough for these. I love anything with peanuts, and I love fresh food. Mae's me feel like it's the perfect balance when I'm eating the fried shrimp with ginger, jalapeños and onions. The shrimp with ginger, jalapeño and onions has to be my favorite thing here. In order it every time. I think they use tempura to fry it and it's served with a sweet chili sauce. The portion of meat I got wasn't bad, but all the cuts were extremely dry and definitely not the best quality. The quality of service is also the typical casual Asian restaurant vibe - don't expect too much. On one of my visits, I asked for no onions, but the server forgot. I'm not allergic so it won't kill me, but just a bit disappointing for a picky eater. If the restaurant is more busy, expect them to never check up on you or refill your water. The staff may suddenly ambush you with the payment machine while you're still in the middle of eating, and then stare intently while breathing down your neck as you select the tip options. I've been here several times and always get the #5 (shrimp pancake) and a #54 (Spicy Chicken, get the yellow rice). #5 comes out piping hot with lots of veggies to wrap it up with and some tasty vinegar based sauce to dip, trip is worth it to come and eat only this. #54 looks like a standard stir fried rice but packs a ton of flavor and has a good range of textures. There were a few tables still vacant in the restaurant when we were there; however, with 3 waiters and 1 waitress, I had to keep trying to get attention from my waiter.
