    11. Shrimp Papaya Salad with Minced Peanut...
    Kartika H.

first time here and will say place is quite spacious. since i was a bit full, decided to just have appetizers. i will say the papaya salad and grilled pork sausage are great and recommended. all ingredients are fresh. for the vietnamese crispy pork & shrimp pancake, i will say the dough is a bit thick and not dry enough. it can be because there is some bean sprouts inside. anyway, prices are average and will say recommended vietnamese restaurant. will come again for sure to try other foods like their noodles...

Companion was in the mood for Vietnamese food and suggested we try Huong Tra, since neither of us had been there. It's a busy spot with decent food at a reasonable price. We arrived in the evening, and there was a short wait. The restaurant is divided into two areas: one for dine-in and one for those waiting to be seated or with takeout orders. There are lots of comings and goings. In terms of the ambiance, it's a neighborhood spot with lots of friends, families, and couples. Decor is minimal and gives your typical neighborhood spot vibe. Service was fine, not attentive, just there to serve your food. We decided to share the Goi Cuon, Hu Tieu Mi Hai San, and Com Tay Cam Thap Cam. The summer rolls were good, fresh, and tasty. The egg and rice noodles with seafood we shared were light and filling. There was a good amount of noodles, broth, and protein--though some of the seafood was overcooked. The clay pot was fine. I'd never tried a clay pot before and found it was seasoned and packed with lots of filling. Overall, everything filled us up, but I didn't leave too impressed. Huong Tra is a longtime staple for Vietnamese cuisine in Richmond. I'd recommend it if you're in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. Wait times can vary, and there's free parking in the shared lot since they're off San Pablo Ave.

No frills pho joint with very reasonable pricing! -Pho hits the spot for a cold winter day. -Rice plates also get the job done with generous portion. Been meaning to try their mi quang but never got around to it.

Shrimp and Pork Summer Rolls with Peanut Sauce

Huong Tra deserves all the hype. I've been coming here for about 13 years now, and it's worthy of sitting in traffic. Parking sucks. Good luck. I usually order the fresh spring rolls with shrimp, but they also offer it with shrimp and pork. The peanut sauce is decadent and just one cup is enough for these. I love anything with peanuts, and I love fresh food. Mae's me feel like it's the perfect balance when I'm eating the fried shrimp with ginger, jalapeños and onions. The shrimp with ginger, jalapeño and onions has to be my favorite thing here. In order it every time. I think they use tempura to fry it and it's served with a sweet chili sauce. I've ordered their rice plates before, too. Valid. Check this spot out!

Small parking lot and we were able to find a spot as someone was leaving. I missed a few photos of food. The tofu salad wasn't bad, my first time trying it. I had the pork, egg and bean cured. Portion size was good. I would return to try a few more dishes.

Good solid Vietnamese food. So convenient to my uncles house so worth the try. The best part of the bun were all the crispy veggies with the noodles. The bad part was the Very weak fish sauce. Good portion size and fairly quick service.

Shrimp with vegetables, but I added the yellow rice and pork. Number 78. Delicious.!!
    Irene G.

This place is so popular and was packed during lunchtime. I tried the number 78 but changed it to yellow rice and added pork to the shrimp and vegetables. It was delicious, I definitely would go back to eat that same meal. Their iced tea was good as well. I don't know if they have desserts. I'll have to check next time. But I loved even though it was lunch and very packed they served us quickly.

Decent vietnamese food, nothing close to amazing. Ordered the cha gio, pho dac biet, and com chien with pork. The Cha Gio fried pork rolls came out piping hot, but with no veggies and it was a sweet and sour type sauce. I was hoping for a fish sauce based sauce. Overall the rolls were OK and I'd likely not order it again here. The Pho Dac Biet combination was a smaller serving compared to other places I've tried Pho Dac Biet. Wish it had more meat and noodles in it. The soup was mediocre, not enough beef flavor. The Com Chien fried rice was pretty good with the pork, but it's hard to go wrong with fried rice.

You can never go wrong with Huong Tra! The food is always on point and tasty. The cubed beef plate is delicious, I love the rice, it is very flavorful. Parking is such a hassle though.

    $12 pho in 2025????

One of the most affordable pho restaurants in the area, but also need to set lower expectations. The portion of meat I got wasn't bad, but all the cuts were extremely dry and definitely not the best quality. The quality of service is also the typical casual Asian restaurant vibe - don't expect too much. On one of my visits, I asked for no onions, but the server forgot. I'm not allergic so it won't kill me, but just a bit disappointing for a picky eater. If the restaurant is more busy, expect them to never check up on you or refill your water. The staff may suddenly ambush you with the payment machine while you're still in the middle of eating, and then stare intently while breathing down your neck as you select the tip options. Very uncomfortable tbh.

    Edison H.

Seems to be one of the local favorites! It's hard to find pho that won't break the bank these days. Service was a bit slow but the restaurant was crowded. I liked how the meat was still raw on top. I was surprised at how dry the meat felt overall though. I mean I can't really complain for how much we paid.

It's been awhile since I first came here and they've updated the size. Place is clean and spacious enough, it seems quite small outside but once you are inside it's a pleasant surprise. Rate from 1-5 Hubby ordered beef flank pho - 4 Grand daughter got chicken pho - 4 Beef with vermicelli noodles - 3 Over all Service 4.5 I would come again to try other items on the menu.

A mentor of mines took me out to dinner here in celebration of my recent graduation and a farewell for my time away overseas for a months. The restaurant was spacious and of course had a cute little view of the marina and bay right outside. Dinner time on a weekday was nice and convenient, and the staff were super chill and patient as we took time to scan the menu and decide what we wanted. We ordered the following: - Shaking chicken: 4.5/5 - this was so flavorful and such a good protein dish! - Spring rolls: 4/5 - Clean and healthy; the sauce made it sooo good. - Fish cakes: 4/5 - they were yummy and good complement to the other dishes we had considering that we tried to balance out our nutritional options. - Spiked Vietnamese coffee: 5/5! I love Vietnamese coffee already but getting to experience an alcohol-based version was solid with this dinner. It was strong with a rich coffee flavor. Something I'd like to emphasize is that these dishes (in my opinion) are ideal for sharing. I ended up taking a lot of the food home because between us two, it was rough eating everything in one go. I can see Anh being a popular place to celebrate as well as a good place for a date! I'd definitely love to come back in the near future.

It adds so much flavor and makes the whole dish feel extra satisfying. One small tip, I'd recommend asking for a bit more lime with the dipping sauce. The pepper-to-lime ratio leans pretty heavy on the pepper side, and I personally like a little more acidity to cut through the richness of the beef. The eggroll appetizer is also worth mentioning. They come out nice and crispy, and wrapping them in the lettuce with the dipping sauce adds a great contrast in texture and a fresh layer of flavor. It's a simple touch, but it really elevates the dish. The pho is solid and pretty standard, no complaints there, but the shaking beef is definitely the star. The atmosphere is very family-friendly. There were kids playing and interacting with each other, which gave the place a warm, community feel. My little one was a bit shy when some kids came over to say hi, but it was still a welcoming moment. The interior is spacious, so I wouldn't worry about bringing a larger group. And for accessibility, there are a couple of steps at the entrance, but there's a lift on the right side, and a flat entrance in the back for wheelchairs or strollers, which is a nice touch.

Rang the bell twice before a lady appeared and directed me to sit on the other side of the restaurant. Adventure begins. It was COLD where I sat, so I asked for a cup of hot tea -- problem solved. The menu, though? Massive. Pho, salads, Vietnamese sandwiches, porridge, vegetarian dishes, noodle soups, vermicelli bowls, rice plates, chow mein, catering options... and about 30 drinks including fruit shakes with boba. If you can't find something here, that's on you. Parking is easy since they have their own lot - always a win around here. Now, about the staff -- I mention this because credit is due. Everyone appears to be older (50+), clearly hardworking folks grinding it out to make a living, and they're genuinely nice. Don't expect much small talk in English though -- they're polite, efficient, and focused on getting things done rather than chatting, which is totally fine. Just a "here's your food, enjoy" kind of vibe. One funny (but slightly distracting) thing: there was a full-on conversation happening in the kitchen between a lady and a man, and it was loud enough that I could clearly hear it from my seat. I felt like I was unintentionally eavesdropping. Maybe turn the kitchen decibel down just a notch? Final downside: a $0.50 to-go charge and a $1.38 'merchant fee.' I find these additional charges off-putting and they give me pause about returning. On principle, I believe these are operating costs the establishment should absorb rather than fees that are passed on to the customer. Overall: extensive menu options, hardworking staff, easy parking -- but the mediocre food, extra fees and a few quirks will keep me away and keep it from being a slam dunk.

If you see Nam Khao on the menu of a Laotian/Thai restaurant, that means they know what they are doing just because it's so labor-intensive to make a salad(!) and the fermented pork has to be damn-near perfect for this salad to really shine and round out the fresh herbs and seasonings which includes lime juice, vinegar, and fish sauce. Ka Soy (the noodle soup) is a comfort food enjoyed in Southeast Asia. It's not the Thai-style where it's a curry broth and the noodles are fried, so let's not get it mixed up. Instead, it's bone broth that been simmered for hours and it's somewhat a lighter broth. The noodles are wide rice noodles in a big bowl of hot broth served with a mixture of ground pork cooked down with tomatoes along with fresh bean sprouts, scallions, and cilantro - simply a divine noodle soup that a must-try. It's not overly complex in terms of flavor, but it's a bowl of good ol' noodle soup that is comforting and great-tasting.
