Companion was in the mood for Vietnamese food and suggested we try Huong Tra, since neither of us had been there. It's a busy spot with decent food at a reasonable price. We arrived in the evening, and there was a short wait. The restaurant is divided into two areas: one for dine-in and one for those waiting to be seated or with takeout orders. There are lots of comings and goings. In terms of the ambiance, it's a neighborhood spot with lots of friends, families, and couples. Decor is minimal and gives your typical neighborhood spot vibe. Service was fine, not attentive, just there to serve your food. We decided to share the Goi Cuon, Hu Tieu Mi Hai San, and Com Tay Cam Thap Cam. The summer rolls were good, fresh, and tasty. The egg and rice noodles with seafood we shared were light and filling. There was a good amount of noodles, broth, and protein--though some of the seafood was overcooked. The clay pot was fine. I'd never tried a clay pot before and found it was seasoned and packed with lots of filling. Overall, everything filled us up, but I didn't leave too impressed. Huong Tra is a longtime staple for Vietnamese cuisine in Richmond. I'd recommend it if you're in the area, but I wouldn't go out of my way for it. Wait times can vary, and there's free parking in the shared lot since they're off San Pablo Ave.

Received a generous portion of grilled pork chops with rice today! Yumm! A must try!

The most affordable Vietnamese foods within the East Bay vicinity. A local mom and pop shop I been dining for years, the flavors of authenticity just made everything such a remarkable experience whenever I am in town. Super reasonable prices all across the menu, this is a MUST TRY !!!!!!!!

No frills pho joint with very reasonable pricing! -Pho hits the spot for a cold winter day. -Rice plates also get the job done with generous portion. Been meaning to try their mi quang but never got around to it.

Huong Tra deserves all the hype. I've been coming here for about 13 years now, and it's worthy of sitting in traffic. Parking sucks. Good luck. I usually order the fresh spring rolls with shrimp, but they also offer it with shrimp and pork. The peanut sauce is decadent and just one cup is enough for these. I love anything with peanuts, and I love fresh food. Mae's me feel like it's the perfect balance when I'm eating the fried shrimp with ginger, jalapeños and onions. The shrimp with ginger, jalapeño and onions has to be my favorite thing here. In order it every time. I think they use tempura to fry it and it's served with a sweet chili sauce. I've ordered their rice plates before, too. Valid. Check this spot out!

Small parking lot and we were able to find a spot as someone was leaving. I missed a few photos of food. The tofu salad wasn't bad, my first time trying it. I had the pork, egg and bean cured. Portion size was good. I would return to try a few more dishes.

first time here and will say place is quite spacious. since i was a bit full, decided to just have appetizers. i will say the papaya salad and grilled pork sausage are great and recommended. all ingredients are fresh. for the vietnamese crispy pork & shrimp pancake, i will say the dough is a bit thick and not dry enough. it can be because there is some bean sprouts inside. anyway, prices are average and will say recommended vietnamese restaurant. will come again for sure to try other foods like their noodles...

Good solid Vietnamese food. So convenient to my uncles house so worth the try. The best part of the bun were all the crispy veggies with the noodles. The bad part was the Very weak fish sauce. Good portion size and fairly quick service.

Shrimp with vegetables, but I added the yellow rice and pork. Number 78. Delicious.!!

This place is so popular and was packed during lunchtime. I tried the number 78 but changed it to yellow rice and added pork to the shrimp and vegetables. It was delicious, I definitely would go back to eat that same meal. Their iced tea was good as well. I don't know if they have desserts. I'll have to check next time. But I loved even though it was lunch and very packed they served us quickly.

Decent vietnamese food, nothing close to amazing. Ordered the cha gio, pho dac biet, and com chien with pork. The Cha Gio fried pork rolls came out piping hot, but with no veggies and it was a sweet and sour type sauce. I was hoping for a fish sauce based sauce. Overall the rolls were OK and I'd likely not order it again here. The Pho Dac Biet combination was a smaller serving compared to other places I've tried Pho Dac Biet. Wish it had more meat and noodles in it. The soup was mediocre, not enough beef flavor. The Com Chien fried rice was pretty good with the pork, but it's hard to go wrong with fried rice.

You can never go wrong with Huong Tra! The food is always on point and tasty. The cubed beef plate is delicious, I love the rice, it is very flavorful. Parking is such a hassle though.

    $12 pho in 2025????

One of the most affordable pho restaurants in the area, but also need to set lower expectations. The portion of meat I got wasn't bad, but all the cuts were extremely dry and definitely not the best quality. The quality of service is also the typical casual Asian restaurant vibe - don't expect too much. On one of my visits, I asked for no onions, but the server forgot. I'm not allergic so it won't kill me, but just a bit disappointing for a picky eater. If the restaurant is more busy, expect them to never check up on you or refill your water. The staff may suddenly ambush you with the payment machine while you're still in the middle of eating, and then stare intently while breathing down your neck as you select the tip options. Very uncomfortable tbh.

    Edison H.

Seems to be one of the local favorites! It's hard to find pho that won't break the bank these days. Service was a bit slow but the restaurant was crowded. I liked how the meat was still raw on top. I was surprised at how dry the meat felt overall though. I mean I can't really complain for how much we paid.

TLDR: Got the wrong order and when they sent the right one, it had a fly (or roach) and hair in it. I was then argued with over the incorrect charge. 1) I ordered pho #2 and was served a rice dish #22. I corrected the server and was served pho a few minutes after my partner's food arrived. No problem - mistakes happen. 2) While putting the vegetable toppings on my pho, I noticed a long strand of hair. It was unmistakably the color of 1 staff member's hair - a dyed brown/ red. I notified the person that served me pho and he said "sorry" but did not send out new food or try to correct the situation in any way. 3) I decided to eat my pho and while drinking the broth, I saw there was a boiled fly / gnat / roach in my soup. I put it on a plate with the hair. (I'll be honest, I was so hungry I decided to eat the food anyways, but now I feel very sick...) 4) We went to pay our check and it was apparent that the listed item on the charge was the first wrong order - the rice dish that cost $2 more than my pho. The server that gave us the wrong order witnessed this exchange and did not correct the other staff member! or correct the charge for that matter! They then put a pho Large on the charge, but I was not served a Large, so still a incorrect (and overpriced) charge for a soup that had a fly/ roach boiled in it and a hair in the vegetables. I have understanding for some random issues that are inevitable mistakes like a fly or hair in my food, but to be argued with over $1 or $2 for double-y incorrect orders as we chose to PAY $50 for the food that was contaminated made me really frustrated with the experience.

Rang the bell twice before a lady appeared and directed me to sit on the other side of the restaurant. Adventure begins. It was COLD where I sat, so I asked for a cup of hot tea -- problem solved. The menu, though? Massive. Pho, salads, Vietnamese sandwiches, porridge, vegetarian dishes, noodle soups, vermicelli bowls, rice plates, chow mein, catering options... and about 30 drinks including fruit shakes with boba. If you can't find something here, that's on you. Parking is easy since they have their own lot - always a win around here. Now, about the staff -- I mention this because credit is due. Everyone appears to be older (50+), clearly hardworking folks grinding it out to make a living, and they're genuinely nice. Don't expect much small talk in English though -- they're polite, efficient, and focused on getting things done rather than chatting, which is totally fine. Just a "here's your food, enjoy" kind of vibe. One funny (but slightly distracting) thing: there was a full-on conversation happening in the kitchen between a lady and a man, and it was loud enough that I could clearly hear it from my seat. I felt like I was unintentionally eavesdropping. Maybe turn the kitchen decibel down just a notch? Final downside: a $0.50 to-go charge and a $1.38 'merchant fee.' I find these additional charges off-putting and they give me pause about returning. On principle, I believe these are operating costs the establishment should absorb rather than fees that are passed on to the customer. Overall: extensive menu options, hardworking staff, easy parking -- but the mediocre food, extra fees and a few quirks will keep me away and keep it from being a slam dunk.

You will find it near the back of the mall, and the place feels a little dated like an old school Asian family restaurant. If you see Nam Khao on the menu of a Laotian/Thai restaurant, that means they know what they are doing just because it's so labor-intensive to make a salad(!) and the fermented pork has to be damn-near perfect for this salad to really shine and round out the fresh herbs and seasonings which includes lime juice, vinegar, and fish sauce. Ka Soy (the noodle soup) is a comfort food enjoyed in Southeast Asia. It's not the Thai-style where it's a curry broth and the noodles are fried, so let's not get it mixed up. Instead, it's bone broth that been simmered for hours and it's somewhat a lighter broth. The noodles are wide rice noodles in a big bowl of hot broth served with a mixture of ground pork cooked down with tomatoes along with fresh bean sprouts, scallions, and cilantro - simply a divine noodle soup that a must-try. It's not overly complex in terms of flavor, but it's a bowl of good ol' noodle soup that is comforting and great-tasting. Also, was hoping for more smoky wok hei flavor. * Thịt Kho Tàu: Braised Pork Belly w/ hard boiled eggs, rice ($21): https://tinyurl.com/mr2evryw - Includes bowl of rice A traditional dish served during Lunar New Year, it symbolizes prosperity, warmth, and stability. Chunks of pork belly are caramelized in sugar and braised in coconut soda and fish sauce - rich, savory with a good ratio of lean meat to fat (4 pieces). Wish they used more braising liquid when warming up, as some pieces were a bit dry. S E R V I C E Warm, friendly hospitality. Food does take awhile tho...our first dish took about 30 minutes to arrive. A M B I A N C E Casual, no-frills indoor area with about 10-12 tables. Cute covered patio in the parking lot with 5 tables and fairy lights. Overall, Mẹ Và Con is a great place to introduce people that are new to Viet cuisine and/or you're looking for Viet dishes with different twist.
