Gran Maya Mexican Overall, I'd rate the experience a 3.4 out of 5. The service could use improvement, but it mostly stems from a language barrier at this small, family-owned business. The owner was multitasking with her child on her shoulder while answering phones, and her other two kids--one around 4 years old and the other about 10--were helping out, with the older one even bringing out chips and salsa. It was actually endearing to witness and gave the experience a personal, unique touch. The food was full of flavor and clearly made with heritage and heart. We had the chicken fajitas loaded with onions and peppers, and a beef and steak quesadilla that was huge--cut in half and almost shaped like a taco, but incredibly authentic and tasty. We also ordered the birria tacos/quesadilla combo with delicious rice and beans, plus fresh chips and salsa to start. I topped it all off with a Dirty Shirley made with Tito's, Sprite, and a splash of grenadine--my favorite. Like explained overall, I'd rate the experience a 3.4 out of 5. I place the food with any other Mexican restaurant, or better. They have some more "non-American-Mexican" restaurants which is nice. I've always had great service, and felt the prices reasonable. Will it blow you away? I don't think so, but you'll have to go to Mexico for truly good Mexican food, or southeastern US. read more

This restaurant just opened a few weeks ago. It still does not have its liquor license, which should be coming in a few weeks so I cannot judge any of the cocktails. My family was trying to find a place to go to for taco Tuesday so we gave this restaurant a try. The server was very attentive and quickly brought us whatever we asked for. Unfortunately, the service was the highlight of our experience. Overall, I would say that the food was very bland. We got chips and salsa and the salsa tasted like watery tomato sauce with no spices added. I asked for a sauce with a little bit more flavor and they brought me out their hot sauce, but it was ironically not that flavorful. This restaurant caters to those with very mild flavor pallettes. The food did not feel like authentic Mexican to me. I ordered taquitos that looks like folded over tacos and were much thicker than taquitos that I typically order. The most telling issue was that my kids thought the food was bland. I ordered a chicken tortilla soup, which was not bad and the portion was huge. However, they didn't have proper to-go containers to take it home. They gave me a Styrofoam cup with a straw lid and it was impossible to pour the huge bowl into the small cup at the table. After a failed attempt to put the soup in the cup, I left the soup there. I imagine they are still working through the kinks and figuring out the flow of a new restaurant. Therefore, I'm willing to try this again in a few weeks once they are a bit more established. On a positive note, the decor was pretty and the layout was well done. We will give it another shot once they get their liquor license. read more

Tried the shrimp cocktail and was surprised by how good it tasted. It comes in a huge goblet and guaranteed to fill you up.

Comfortable and uncrowned place to dine. Service was excellent, place very clean, servers very friendly. The fish tacos were just ok, the shrimp ones a bit better. Not impressed by the guacamole, seemed watered down with something different tasting, maybe sour cream or such. read more

We took our granddaughter to Gran Maya for a night out and we all had a great time. The food is excellent. The starter of queso was creamy and delicious. We got mains of sizzling hot steak fajitas, chiles poblanos, and a veggie plate with a bean burrito and cheese enchilada. They were all outstanding. We are up to five trips to this restaurant so far and I have to admit that we are underwhelmed which is a shame as we really like Mexican food and would like a great place closer to our home than our favorites which are in downtown Ann Arbor (parking ugh! and Depot-town in Ypsilanti) The food here is essentially unremarkable and bland (despite the promising pictures and descriptions in the menus) and the service leaves a lot to be desired. We've visited during busy times (a really bad idea as the quality of the service really tanks when they get busy) and slower times (when there is no excuse for poor service) and have been disappointed in the attentiveness of the servers. The manager does make the rounds to check how things are going and seems to care about the operation but the actual servers assigned to our table usually ignore us once the food has been delivered. We have even had to chase down our server a couple of times to get the check after the meal. The place is clean and newly decorated and thoughtfully divided in an effort to increase the intimacy of the dining experience but the quality of the food and service needs to be improved before I can recommend this place. Fortunately, both the food and the service can be improved with proper management attention so we will just have to see how this place develops over time. read more

This review is solely for take out service as that is all I have done here, I have had no complaints other than lack of flavor with the food and my order being messed up multiple times among pickup. Not sure if it's the person taking the order just not paying attention or lack of care, but if you're taking orders you should pay attention to detail and remember what someone said so you can get it right. Now an outstanding Mexican restaurant! -It has had a 100% turnaround from our lackluster experience during their first month. After being enthusiastically greeted and quickly seated, we were welcomed with a dish of fresh tortilla chips and good homemade salsa! My husband and I enjoyed a delicious appetizer of melted cheese dip with ground beef in it, and he had wonderful Fajitas Texanas that he enjoyed so much he ordered them on two separate visits. I have had enchiladas, tostadas, tacos, and all were absolutely delicious. The chicken tortilla soup is fresh, delicious and obviously made on the premises... and one bowl is enough for three people! The service was outstanding and the atmosphere is clean, attractive, and has a delightful Mexican ambience. We both highly recommend this restaurant and are now weekly patrons! We waited about a month for this new venue to get established, before trying it. Sadly, our experience was disappointing. We were greeted by the hostess when we entered, seated and provided menus. The same hostess brought us chips and salsa within a few minutes. It took almost 20 minutes before a server approached us to see what we wanted to drink. We only ordered water, but it took that server almost 10 minutes to return with the water. My wife ordered a Taco Salad, with light tomatoes, which they seemed to misunderstand, as it was loaded with Tomatoes. She said overall the Taco Salad was ok, nothing special. I ordered the Chicken Fajitas. They arrived and the chicken and vegetables were overcooked, burned and very dry actually. It came with a side of rice, which was bland and tasteless, refried beans and a small portion of salad. I have ordered Fajitas in a fair number of Mexican restaurants and they always come with a side of Sour Cream and usually Guacamole. This came with neither. It took forever to get a side of sour cream, I was near done eating. Most surprising was the $1.25 charge on our bill for the Sour Cream. They don't have a liquor license yet, but cannot imagine how much slower the service will be when they have to prepare and deliver cocktails. There seems to be staff there, but not focused on customer experience or attentiveness, just standing around talking. The interior has been done with wooden bench booths and tables. The quality of food and ingredients is sub-par in terms of freshness and quality. There are far better options for Mexican food in A2. One and Done here, will not be back. read more

Newly opened. They are still working out the bugs but I won't downgrade a new restaurant for it. I ordered a #7 lunch carryout which includes a tamale. After I arrived and waited for a bit, was told that they were out of tamales. Seems this should be info that the person taking orders should be aware of... ordered a taco salad instead and got my food after around 30 minutes from the time I first ordered. While waiting, a few customers came in but no one manning the reception area. One waited long enough to ask me if it was self seating. Oddly, there was an employees hanging out near the entry door who did not come over to greet customers. The interior looks great. The taco salad was ok (shell was a little greasy). Came with salsa and chips. Salsa had a bright tomato flavor with a light kick. I would probably rate the meal a 3.5. read more

Gran Maya is really and excellent addition to the local dining scene. We were seated quickly and served with warm chips and mild salsa. The menu is extensive and we were delighted with our chimichanga and taquitos Mexicanos. We saved some space for a fried banana dessert which was huge. And all for a very reasonable price. Today I chose to eat my lunch at gran Maya as I walked in I was sat down the. Within 5 minutes I was greeted and offered chips to wich I said yes. To my surprise they took way to long to ask what I wanted to drink but as soon as I got my drink they asked what I wanted to eat at the perfect time. Food took a little longer to get to us than I would have preferred but once I got the food it was like Jesus placed it there himself. The food was pretty tasty and I ate the whole plate. Once my food was gone I was again asked if I wanted a another Diet Coke. To that I then said " I'll please take the bill", once we received our bill I then put the card at the end of the table expecting them to take it to wich the man waiting us went and sat by his buddy and folded napkins. So to pass the time I then went to the bathroom to wich I saw to weirdos looking like npcs sitting there they were eating there meals like weirdos. Overall great food and amazing service. read more

This is not fine dining but it is quite good. Our picky eater loved their ground beef/chorizo burrito. Other fussy guy gorged himself on the seafood fajitas. Hubby and I got the "little bit of everything" and it was very very good. Attentive and available servers. Alcoholic beverages were potent and appropriately priced. Food was plenty and delicious. I went there with my wife tonight for the very first time after watching the renovations slowly happen over the past months after its two predecessor restaurants, Big Boy and Kathy's Pancake House, closed. I was stunned by its beautiful exterior appearance and tasteful interior decor. The food was excellent, the service was topnotch, and the portions were extremely generous. The seafood ingredients in my caldo de siete mares were very fresh. They have not yet gotten their liquor license, but that is in the works. I will be back! read more

I was super excited that an accessible sit down Mexican restaurant was opening in this area, but alas, it is a bomb and I won't be going back. In a nutshell, poor food for high prices. Dry, flavorless, overcooked pork resembling something scraped from a buffet tray at end of day. Chile verde void of any flavor except sour. Bland refried beans. The beans are always my test of a Mexican place and they didn't pass. Meh salsa. Horchata that tasted like it definitely came from a can. Plates that were hot but food that was not. They have a gigantic menu that they should scale way back until they learn to cook some of it. I came hungry, only ate half my plate even though the portions weren't huge, and didn't eat the leftovers I took home. All of that for a hefty tab and we didn't even order alcohol. I ate at Gran Maya for the first time on Thursday June 20, 2024. I was not impressed. I ordered the choriqueso and 2 chiles rellenos alla carte. I got queso dip without chorizo in it. The dip was white American cheese. I've been to dozens of Mexican Restaurants and I've traveled extensively through Mexico on numerous occasions. I've never seen white American cheese used in any Mexican restaurant. Authentic Mexican restaurants tend to use Asadero cheese, Queso Fresco, cheddar or Panela cheese. Americanized Mexican restaurants tend to use Mozzarella, cheddar or Munster as the cheese base. The chiles rellenos also had white Ameircan in them. It tasted like I was eating a grilled cheese sandwich. On top of that, they didn't remove the seeds from the poblano peppers. There was a sea of seeds floating throughout the very watery cheese. It made the peppers very difficult to eat as I was constantly spitting out seeds onto my plate. I'd be willing to wait a while and then go back to see if they get all the bugs worked out, but as is, I cannot recommend them for authentic Mexican food. I forgot to mention that I waited more than 30 mins for my food. A family that sat down 20 mins after I did got their food 10 mins before I did. read more
