The Meh: *Only one location in the South Bay and only three on the entire Bay Area. This location is a little far for most, as it's in a random industrial neighborhood in far North San Jo. *The biggest difference btwn Grainger and the other hardware stores is no garden section and no lumber. The Ugly: *Hours kinda suck (M-F only, no weekends) compared to the more popular, consumer-oriented hardware stores. Today I went back trying my last attempt to find the correct adapter for my shower fixture. The same lady casher who helped me before. I explained all the things I have tried and still couldn't find the right one. She went to ask her manager help. Her manager (Henry Tran) came back and took his time to understand my issue. He found the root cause of my issue. It is the type of thread that needed to be compression on one side of my adapter. They did not carry the adapter. But, he took his time to find out one on Amazon and even printed out the info for me. This is what I call above and beyond. This demonstrate the true essence of customer service. Patient, understanding, willingness to help and also competency. Provide solution instead of just trying to make a sale. This will benefit the business in the long run. I stopped in looking for a Ballast for an air compressor. The front of the building is very long however when you walk inside the show room is quite small. It's very deceiving "the show room" as I watched the guy that was helping me jump on a picker and disappear into oblivion. 10 minutes later he returned with the part in hand. I can only guess how massive their where house must be, I mean who carries Ballast anyway let alone 50+ versions? Bottom line Grainger's carries a massive amount of hard to get. 100+F temperature in San Jose and our air conditioning unit decides to give up on us. Home warranty is unable to locate a contractor to come out and fix it. So I did my own investigation and figured it was a blown capacitor. Called a few HVAC places and none of them had the capacitor I was looking for. But one of them recommended i check with Grainger. A few minutes later, I had a very friendly rep work with me and locate the capacitor at the San Jose store. Transferred me to the ordering department and a few minutes later I had my capacitor reserved for pickup. Grainger is extremely serious about social distancing !! There was a long line of cars waiting to get into the parking lot and they were checking with every person before letting them into the store or drive around for pickup. But after 30 minutes in the car line and 10 minutes inside the store for pickup I had my capacitor. An hour later, AC is fixed and I can relax in 78F. Wonderful friendly service. I am really impressed with Granger's product order and pick-up following the COVID-19 Business practice guidelines. This location has set up a single lane Drive-through where people can order online and bring their printed order or receipt which is first checked off by an individual at the first stop counter area before proceeding to the product pick up area, all done while the driver is behind the wheel and kept at a safe distance. Came to return something and they had this ridiculous system where you wait in line and then wait again in a spot for help. Guy comes out tells us to wait while he walks off. He then is told he was to help us but walked over to another car. They won't let you in to return and the service is super slow. Over one hour wait. read more

I prefer to pick it up in person to make sure I would not have to return a "problem" order like I so often have done with Amazon and other online retailers. 1) I feel I like to give "0" star to this business and this store, but yelp does not provide me this option. 1) My online order has an estimated pick up date, but when this date comes, there is no email notification about my order. So I try to call customer service, but no one pick up the phone!!! 2)I went to this store to check what's going on, they told me that this order was been cancelled long time ago. Why not sending any email to notifying me that the order has been cancelled? 3) The stores attendance tell me after 2 hours, there is another similar product will be in the store and right now it is on the way, so I wait for 2 hours nearby and still nobody called me to pick up. My air conditioner conked out last night, and I tracked the issue to the capacitor. After a bit of searching, the only place I found locally that carried the appropriate replacement was Grainger. I ordered the part online for next-day pickup, and by 9:30 am I had an email that it was ready. As others have mentioned, they are funneling cars to an attendant in the parking lot who checks what you're looking for and directs you appropriately. Everyone's doing something, just not helping anyone. They pick stuff up, move stuff around, pick their noses, but no greeting, no help for the people who are there. I asked a question, wanted to see if something was there in the warehouse for a quick pickup, the answer I got was, what does it say online? Now hiring signs outside of the building, apparently they only hire dicks. Older Asian gentlemen was demeaning asking me to look at my phone to show that the item will be available tomorrow. Didn't explain the system, just felt everyone should know that the warehouse is not accessible and it will take them an entire day to grab and prep a bucket of rodent poison for purchase. Came here on a recommendation from Home Depot. I was looking for a industrial bolt. 1/2 by 20, grade 8, partial fine thread, 3 inch long. They have the bolt but it would have to be special order and it would take 4 business days. I basically didn't have time to wait but they gave me another recommendation at another business. I appreciate the recommendation and the other business had the bolts in Stock. This definitely save a lot of time for me. Helpful staff, good selection. I've had to visit this location a few times to nab safety-related gear (i.e. safety glasses, zip ties) and the location doesn't get any more convenient. On the other hand, do not make the assumption that items will be in stock, no matter how common the item may be. There was also a time where I was told via phone that the item was in stock at that location, and it turned out when I arrived they actually didn't have it (were confusing it with another item). High recommended to call and verify any item you are looking for is in stock with people AT THIS LOCATION. Do not call the Grainger reps via their national call-in number, as the online inventories may be misleading to their service reps and they will think your item is in stock. I used to pick up parts here for a company when I was a driver. And they have construction type sun glasses that caught my attention. Oakley and Harley Davidson Brand. So I came back here several weeks ago, but didn't find the right orange shade I wanted. Instead I got me this Harley Davidson Brand Sun Glasses that are so chrome you can actually use it as a mirror. I ain't a biker but the chrome shade is A-OK. They have some other gears for doing construction jobs or even as a freelance demo man. Like Helmets and Gloves. Great customer service. Parts are cheap. My Lennox furnace blower motor burn out and I've called around Lennox authorized dealer for a replacement motor and also for replacement capacitor. They quoted me $280 for motor and $70 for capacitor. I was like DAMN!!! I read around on the forums people mentioned Grainger. I checked their website and their motors are cheap. The only thing is I have to remove the whole blower and bring the motor to them for a match. I got the GE motor for $88 and capacitor for $5. Wow, I'm a happy customer. Now I just have to figure out how to wire it all together. Let see if everything will work....... read more

The service there at Grainger exceeded my expectations. If ordering parts I recommend asking to speak with Renee. She went above and beyond to help me out and getting my parts ordered. There was some confusion with another associate there and the order was never placed. I called in and spoke with Renee, she helped me re-order my parts and turned my rating into a 5 star be siding the misplaced order placed weeks in advance. Placed an order and was running late picking up so decided to call them. I called both an 800 and a local number and both took me to the same main customer service line. I then asked to speak with the local branch which has my order. Both responded that the store does not accept incoming calls and that they would have to email the store. As you can imagine emails are not for urgent situations and I asked repeatedly for the phone number for the store. They refused to give me any phone number and the best I could get was the email which after sending I got no response. read more

Went in on Monday to order a part and needed and was told it would arrive Friday. I waited all day Friday for a call and decided just before closing to go in and check if it had arrived. When I got there they couldn't find my order and said it must have had a problem with shipping and that it would arrive the next Monday. I called customer support Monday morning to check on the status of my order and she told me it had never really gone through and that my order would not be shipped for another 4-5 days because the warehouse was on the east coast. When I said I need the part she acted like it was my fault and that they couldn't do anything to get it here sooner. I asked to cancel my order and get a refund and she got an attitude and then canceled it. She asked if I needed anything else and when I said "no" she sarcastically said "good" and hung up in me.
