We were in Newark De to visit my daughter the goes to U Delaware. She wanted to try the brunch at grain. We called head to get a table which was 20 minutes in advance. Got there. Waited another 20 Minutes and was seated outside. Which was not terrible. But it was a bit chilly. Our waiter informed us the kitchen was slow. Well over an hour later our "food" finally arrived. Cold. Incorrect and not good. After a lot of apologies by the waiter and GM we left. They did not charge us. Big disappointment read more

Pro: Grain is a good place to sit outside and pursue all of your day drinking-based dreams!...and hopefully they all come true. The ample selection of craft beers and spirits will quench the thirsts of parched patrons. Regarding the food, the Impossible Burger was an enigma of sorts. It was a vegetarian burger option that could fool most carnivores! The patty tasted just like a meat product, just without the grease. In addition, the Duck Reuben was a creative way to serve the popular sandwich in a unique fashion. Con: Unless you suffer from a near-fatal case of low sodium, DO NOT order the Grouper Sandwich! This may be one of the saltiest food items I've ever had the unfortunate displeasure of partially ingesting. Ironically, the Chicken Nachos were quite bland. This place is a great concept; too bad the food is weak. My visit, however, was salvaged by two positives: 1) I experienced exceptional service from the server named Rachel, who had perfect timing and a very pleasant demeanor and 2) My IPA was very cold and crisp. I hate to report the not so great aspects of this restaurant. First, the ahi Tuna appetizer, while featuring a very generous portion size, tasted like the ahi I buy at ShopRite and sear for 60 seconds on my backyard barbecue grill. Next, The restaurant ran out of Romaine lettuce so my Caesar salad featured mixed greens. The grilled chicken was bland and dry. I believe management can easily fix the food issues. I hope they can do that as I would like to come back ---because the atmosphere is good and the service is outstanding. **Note: I regret not reading the Yelp reviews prior to visiting Grain. Roaches, cock roaches everywhere. Full disclosure, I haven't been to this location in probably 3-4 years but I always loved it. Great beer selection and food was always good. After tonight I'll never return. Got there around 430pm the place had a few customers but it wasn't real busy so we were able to grab two seats at the back bar. Service was slow to get our drink order in. After sitting for about 10 mins my buddy noticed a bug crawling around on the bar too near the cut limes we watched and seen it scurry away and thought that couldn't be a roach and dismissed it. About 20 minutes later we had another one this time on the bar top right in front of us. Without question this was definitely a cock roach. We paid our bill and left but on the way out informed the hostess of what we saw. She seemed to dismiss it with a smile and said she would let them know. Bottom line is I won't be back. read more

Grain is nice, but I never go out of my way to eat or drink here. It's an every now and then spot; when the mood strikes me, or the ennui of Main Street takes root, I'll pay a visit to the bar trying to take the throne of trendiest gastropub in town. Of course, Grain does not have that going on. The menu has some tasty options, such as the tacos and nachos. The sesame tuna is alright and the sliders are passable. The kitchen can, and does, produce some good food. But I've never had anything here that really impressed me or blew me away. As for the beer choices, sure, they've got a fair number of taps. The selection leaves something to be desired. To really capitalize on the gastropub concept, I'd like to see them feature beers from further away and targeting different palates. Even the list of bottles and cans seems to just scrape the surface by showcasing a lot of mass-produced beers and many far too familiar regionals. Though there's nothing wrong with Grain, it doesn't live up to its promise. Keep it in rotation for when you've got extra money to spend, but stick to Arena's otherwise. read more

Overall ...food looks better than it tastes. Had the corn hoe cake and it seemed to be missing something - The taste of my meal was was just bland. My friend ordered the streak and eggs ... asked for the eggs over hard and had to send them back and the new eggs were still runny. Reason - we were told they don't cook them any harder. So if you like over hard don't get them here. Most of the table had a lot of coffee grains floating in their coffee. At the end two of my friends had their checks messed up - one check said $15 and yet was charged $30 ...the other was charged $15 for the $30 check. The option was given to split checks so we chose that option... the checks came in different check jackets cards yet still charged incorrectly. It wasn't a horrible experience... just not a place I would choose to go again when in the area for brunch. read more

This is the their first week so we expected some issues. Opening week was actually pretty good. Food is tasty. We had: Grain burger on the onion and poppyseed roll and Caesar salad with Smith Island crab cake. Good selection of beer and wine, with a creative chart identifying beer bitter/malty/sweet tendencies. It's a little noisy but that's what you would expect. Nice addition to the Newark area. After dinner, we discovered that Rachel's cake has been replaced by Dessert by Dana. The cake was dry and the icing was a poor imitation. I'm not sure how Dana won the Next Great Baker or why the grain decided to lower their standards for the sake of standardization. For $11 a slice you'd expect more. This may be our last trip. The food was decent, the performer (red hot duo) did a good job on some covers but the dessert was a disaster. The last bites and moments of you evening should be the best, ours was far from it. We've been dining at Grain over the past 1 1/2 years as they allow our small dog to join in their patio area. While I agree that the food seems a little overpriced, we do love the macho's and have some other menu favorites. We made our way to Grain yesterday to celebrate our son's 17th Birthday. Our experience yesterday wiped away all good experiences we have had up to date. Upon arrival (5:15 PM) we were tile that we were 4th in-line to be seated (while some tables were open in the patio). While several customers left over the next hour and some, we were told at 6:30 PM that we were still 4th in line while there were more open tables in the patio since the time we arrived. I had been here before when it wasn't Grain and I was impressed to see the changes that Grain made to the location. It looks completely different and the new look is a good one. It's open and bright and very earthy with all the wood decor. We had a large party for brunch so they sat us on the enclosed patio. I had a drink called the Russian Princess, basically a vodka lemonade, which was very good. They also had mimosas and bloody marys which looked good. I ordered the spicy shrimp and grits and while I wouldn't say they were spicy, they were good. I had to add some salt and pepper though, so they could probably spruce up the recipe a bit. The service was a bit forgetful, but we were a lot to handle, being a group of around 20 people. They had an interesting beer list but the one beer my companion ordered never made its way to our table. I'd come again and see if it was just the size of our group. I really like the look of this place, the half tree table is pretty awesome. I love the outdoor seating, and the covered area stays very warm, even in the winter. It feels so much more bright and airy than when it was Mojo, it's hard to believe that it is the same building. There were some pretty interesting drinks that they were serving here. A few inventive things that they are doing with ginger beer. They made something, I think it was called a Russian Princess, that was lemon vodka, ginger beer and strawberry. It was very good, I'd absolutely recommend it. The Bloody Mary was great, and had a big hunk of beef jerky in it, lot's of spices, and great flavor. They also had a few interesting beers available. I like how they have a chart comparing the different tastes of the beers that they offer. They had some interesting things available on tap and in bottles. I wasn't so impressed with the food for brunch. Everything I tried was pretty bland. I tasted the Chicken and waffles and the shrimp and grits. Both are dishes that I love, and I was super excited to try both of them (I even concocted a deal with my betrothed to make sure that I tried both of them). We come here often when we are in town for two reasons: decent bloody Mary's and a patio that accepts dogs. Brunch food is just okay- you should not expect anything super spectacular. Western omelette is okay, nothing exciting. And the citrus avocado salad was good(ish) but just because I was craving veg. As for the bright spots: 1) the cherry pop tart which was actually the size of a dinner plate and more like a toaster strudel with flaky pastry. The beer list is extensive and changes seasonally (and perhaps even more often?). I love how they present the beer menu. There is a taste map, so folks who are looking for something new or who are new to drinking beer can easily find something they might like. Very well done there. They probably have at least 100 beer options. I really love their food. It's hearty and creative. Sure, you could get a salad, but why do that when you could get the OMG brisket nachos, the street tacos, or a pretzel board?! Their sweet potato fries with caramel dipping sauce is outta this world good. My friends and I love their rotating, seasonal specials, so don't skip the specials menu! I've never sat inside because their outdoor seating area is superb. It's mostly covered, and it's clean and comfortable, offering picnic benches or rustic high tops. We love this spot for after class beers and lunch (GREAT deals on their lunch menu!!!) or for dinner and drinks. You can't go wrong here. Also, I mentioned class - my friends and I are grad students in our late 20s and early 30s. This isn't a college hang out per se. I got the OMG nachos and the cheese was the bees knees. I think it was a white cheese? I like the location being that I am an alumna of the University of Delaware, so it gives me a nostalgia to be in downtown Newark while experiencing the new. I love this restaurant design however I think they could be a lot more friendlier to diverse patrons. Outside of that I like the food here more than the one in Bear. THE NORFOLK CHEESESTEAK WAS AMAZING! My friend had the chicken sandwich and she really liked it also. The rooftop bar scene was very fun and relaxing. Came here with my 98 year old grandfather who is extremely sweet but also extremely stubborn. From the time we pulled up the staff was welcoming, helpful and patient. Our server Luke was awesome; couldn't have been more attentive or friendly. He recommended some items to us and made sure our first visit went great. This place is awesome. The caramel apple pecan French toast is amazing. The sunrise nachos are my everything. Any restaurant that puts blue cheese stuffed olives, a slice of jalapeño and a beef jerky stick in my Bloody Mary deserves a standing ovation. The back patios heat lamps are the perfect temperature, so we got to sit outside and watch this winters first snow while watching Santa entertain the children. Great family spot on Main but also hip enough for college kids!! The food is really good. The portions sizes are amazing. Hire a Chef please or fire the one you have and replace. Your menu items lack in all areas of flavor consistency and appearance. The food here is really bad and looks like most of it is possibly from a can or microwaved. I've had food come to my table with cold spots then super hot spots followed with room temperature areas. Sent it back as it looked like overcooked rice with a can of stewed tomatoes and random temperature meats. I've had on multiple occasions food delivered and showed up completely cold. The service has varied the times I've been there. Usually though it seems like they are overstaffed yet somehow the service is still terrible. It seems they lack in training not only from thier kitchen but thier wait staff. Ive also tried the new location in Maryland at the marina and was underwhelmed by the food again. Service was very good though this time which was a nice surprise. Outdoor ambiance and the band playing was also very nice. I really wanted to like Grain as I enjoy craft Beer but they all seem a little higher priced then it's competition and they really really need to step up thier food. Been here before ordered similar items on occasion. Today i ordered takeout after work to bring home. placed order online at 3:36. Order was not brought to me in parking lot until 4:15. i called when i arrived at 4:00 to state i was in lot checking on order status. 15 minutes later it comes out, i could tell it's been sitting, was not hot, must have been shift change. By the time i got home it was cold. OMG sauce ( american cheese) smelled burnt and by then hard. Trashed it. My nachos were cold and had a hair in it. 30 dollar life lesson. read more

Went there Sunday afternoon and the service was terrible (took 10 minutes for someone to come to the table the first time) and subsequently we had to wave people down constantly to get napkins, syrup, ketchup. You get the picture. We were stalking the waitstaff just to pay our bill or to get refills on water. The kids meal came out with cold fries. I had the capt crunch French toast and it tasted good, but the presentation of literally three pieces of bare toast on a completely unvarnished plate was underwhelming. The best part about Grain is the energy and ambiance of the space, which makes it a good place to grab drinks and hang out. Outdoor seating is nice and open - they have heaters during the winter but it's still pretty cold so not recommended. The inside doesn't feel cramped and the noise level is good. Food isn't very memorable. The OMG burger is the best thing on the menu that I've had - the cheese sauce and bacon jelly make it moist. Fries and shared plates are standard and a little expensive. I had a very unpleasant experience after eating at grain for Sunday brunch. I came with a group of 6 others and we were seated immediately, which was great. The service was quick and nice. I decided to go with the lunch half of brunch and ordered a turkey burger with truffle fries. Both tasted fine at the time, but were massively heavy (for a normally sized burger and regular portion of fries). I didn't have anything else to eat the rest of the day since I was so full from brunch, and still ended up throwing up later in the day. I couldn't tell if it was the truffle fries or the turkey burger that caused it, but I'd stay away from both. I was torn about rating this business since I was the only one in the group with this kind of experience, but I was also the only one to order the turkey burger. Service and ambiance were great, but there's something wrong if the food causes this sort of reaction. read more

We tried the place with friends that were in from out of town. In short, our experience matched a lot of the write ups. The beer choices are excellent and the cocktails on tap our friends really loved. It is a little odd to see a plastic toy in an adult beverage - almost wonder how the plastic toys are cleaned before they are put in the drink - good health department question on that one. The service was just ok, our person was a bit of a flake and slow, but she was nice. The food was less than average - we tried 2 apps and 4 different main dishes, no one was really overly happy. The fried pickles are really just a pile of dough wrapped in breading and a very tiny pickle - would avoid totally. One of our friends had the cheese steak and it was so dry and lack of meat/cheese it wasn't even funny. It really looked like a roll with a smear of meat/cheese. I tried the Zoodle Pasta, which is a cold salad vs. what most places do with zucchini and squash noodles - I would also avoid this one too. The other stuff was just ok, and lack luster. We stopped in during a road trip. There was plenty of parking. First of all, their COVID-19 precautions are excellent, like getting my lime for my club soda in a little disposable ramekin with a lid. They have sanitizer and the servers are all masked. The outside seating was very pleasant and well spaced so I didn't feel worried. Our server, Haj (spelling?), was super friendly and kind. He made good food recommendations. The food came very quickly, which helped us get back on the road sooner. Everything was DELICIOUS. I particularly liked the the lobster in the quesadilla --it was nice and chunky and moist, and my daughter loved the healthy salmon on quinoa with edamame. I think the ONLY complaint I had, which I didn't bother Haj with, was that the specials menu didn't specify that the lobster quesadilla was seasoned with Old Bay. Old Bay is not my favorite and a bit too salty for me, and I might have asked them to leave it off had I known it was going to be on there. But it was still a great meal. I've been to Grain twice now, while visiting my sister, who is a student at UDel. Grain is at the very beginning of Main Street. Both times, I've enjoyed my food and would love to try their brunch some time. The first time I came, I ordered the Black Bean Burger with a side of Roasted Cauliflower. The burger was pretty standard, but good. I loved the roasted cauliflower - I thought it was a nice addition to the sides menu. When we went yesterday, i ordered one of the new items on the menu - the Cold Asian Noodle Salad. Despite it taking a while to come out (and coming out warm... which was weird, but not unwelcome), it was delicious. It wasn't as "light" or refreshing as I was hoping, but it was incredibly flavorful, and a very generous portion. Our server was incredibly apologetic and nice about it coming out late and warm (I think they had freshly made/cooked the noodles and didn't let them cool) - but honestly, it was still delicious and I didn't mind at all.
