-Update-
I said I'd go back and I did! But this time, we stopped by the Springdale one so this update is for that location. The Husband and I were VERY happy. I think the Mason one had, by comparison, freezer-y ice cream or we had hit the bottom of the barrel, so to speak. The Springdale ice cream was creamy and reminded me of Mitchell's in SF and hit just the right flavor notes. I tried the chocolate (like Mitchell's), the toffee chip, the chocolate and the strawberry and we ended up getting chocolate and strawberry.
So my apologies, Graeter's, for my previous three stars. I happily add one more and can't wait to come back!
-End of Update-
I said in a previous post that I don't think it's fair to regionally compare foods. For example, BBQ in the South and BBQ in SF isn't much of a fair fight. I have compared donuts in LA to donuts in SF but come on, we're just an hour's plane ride away!
Back to the main point. Because of this hang up of mine, I've decided to give Graeter's an extra star because I don't think there is much competition in the Ohio area (please don't hate me, Ohioans).
The In-Laws moved to Cincinnati a few months back for work. The Husband and I were visiting during Christmas break and were taken to Graeter's because it is "better than Ben & Jerry's and Haagen-Dazs".
To be honest, I would disagree with the latter. I think the creaminess of many of Graeter's flavors is better than the oftentimes icy quality of Ben & Jerry's (which is actually a product of the packaging/freezing and, unfortunately, freeze thaw / freezer burn phenomenon) but I think the overall richness of flavor and quality of ingredients is better with Haagen-Dazs. Also, I found most of Graeter's flavors to be too sweet. But I'm comparing apples to oranges. Haagen-Dazs markets itself as a luxury ice cream whereas Graeter's is all about neighborhood and community.
Take the store, for example. We drove up at around 9:30 on a Tuesday evening and it was full of families sharing sundaes, cones and shakes. This location was pleasantly lighted and easily accessible. The servers at the counter were friendly and helpful and when I apologetically told the girl helping us that the Husband and I were from out-of-state, she laughed and said she thought as much.
My favorite that night was actually the vanilla. I've been a vanilla girl since I was a babe in diapers. Something about the simple but rich flavor appeals to me. Anyway, after eating fit to bust on a cruise ship for eight days, I wanted something plain. The In-Laws got the Butter Pecan, which I found to be almost too buttery. It was too sweet for my liking.
We tried:
Black Cherry - good, solid cherry flavor but also too sweet
Caramel - this was one of my least favorites because the caramel flavor seemed artificial
Cookies 'n Cream - solid cookies n' cream! Reminded me of Thrifty ice cream.
Elena's Blueberry Pie - not one of my favorites, despite the real blueberry pie crust in the ice cream, because it was too sweet
Vanilla - nice and solid taste of vanilla bean and good, creamy texture
Black Raspberry Chip - I don't usually like chocolate with fruit (although I can see the appeal) and this held true with the BRC because I thought the particular flavors of the raspberry and chocolate didn't mesh very well
I'd like to go back to try to coffee, strawberry, toffee chip, chocolate and chocolate chip flavors.
All in all, if you like creamy ice cream that leans toward the sweeter side, Graeter's is your Irresistible source. read more
