When in Victoria, BC you have to try it all... so many styles of food makes you feel like you're in a melting pot and you can't leave with out stopping in to this gem of a joint known as Grace Sushi. The atmosphere is really minimalist yet welcoming. You can pretty much seat yourself or guide your host to where you'd like to sit and with only one other table taken... We had plenty of options.... We wanted to take in the room and still be able to have a view of the streets. Most sushi places have veggie options and Grace has more than one can expect even Giant rolls (a few extra pieces, all a larger circumference)... we all enjoyed some hot tea (jasmine I believe, but possibly green) which really hit the spot as during these last weeks of winter. The tea is complimentary and served in a tall ceramic cup and VERY fresh so let it cool quite a bit first. We kept the heat coming with a perfect miso soup... very rich with flavor and quite savory. My friends went to town with dynamite, deep fried and spicy rolls they quite recommend... but this veggie kept it 100 and tried as much as his stomach would allow. The avocado in all the rolls was some of the most perfect I've have not too ripe. The Giant Yam rolls were incredible and I can't think of a single sushi place I've been to in my life that offers yam in any of their dishes. The veggie roll was packed with variety including avocado, cucumber, carrot, radish and red cabbage). Everything we had was quite enjoyable. We opted out of drinks, which they do offer and serve, mostly rice wine (sake), beer and a wine or two. Would absolutely go back (when able) and pair some sake or Sapppro with my meal. There is street parking that doesn't fill up too fast and parking garages and areas close by. The service is very efficient and kind... please give grace to Grace in the future. read more

Wonderful miso! It's a lovely brown rice miso at $1.50. A nice ferment with a great garnish. $1.50!. Their kappa maki is ok. Their tempura has a hint of cinnamon. If you get a chance, come here for the best miso soup available in Victoria (to me). Store st. next to Swan's. The menu is a bit large but let the softshell crab be the test eh? Family friendly. Awesome, inexpensive sushi spot with a VERY large menu selection! They also serve complimentary tea which is very tasty. Their bento boxes are also a great value and come with a miso soup on the side. Also, if you leave a review for them you get a free desert (maybe I should have wrote this review while dining in lol). Only downfall here is that the service is a bit lacking - despite the workers being super friendly, they are not very attentive and you likely will find you have to call them over or go up to them to make any requests. The servings were generous to be sure, but the only truly fresh offerings were the tuna and salmon pieces and possibly the spinach. The Miso was weak and bland. This is a quick spot to get your sushi fill! I went here due to its proximity to the Drake. Having been spoiled by Vancouver sushi, perhaps this review is biased. Regardless, I found this place to be a satisfactory sushi joint. Their prawn tempura both smelled and tasted like mini doughnuts that you'd get from the county fair. There was a sweetness and crumb-like quality to it with a thicker than usual batter. Also, the shrimp didn't taste too fresh. So, not necessarily your traditional light and refreshing prawn tempura... but not bad. It gets it done! Their unagi roll didn't have the usual grilled BBQ flavour to it and the fish to rice ratio wasn't favourable but, again, it gets it done! Their awesome roll, however, was extremely satisfying. I'd say it was the best part of our meal! A lot of fish, unique textures, and diverse flavours. I would come back due to its convenience (and their delicious tea) but not necessarily for their good sushi. read more

A big disappointment. Another case of "looks can be deceiving". The menu looks impressive, but beware of large menus in sushi restaurants. Most of the sushi was not cold, some seemed like room temperature. It didn't taste fresh. A lof of the fish had very little taste, this happens a lot when you freeze and not properly thaw your fish. Ordered the volcano roll even though I normally don't like deep fried food. This was very lightly battered to give a great crunchy texture without being overly fried and heavy. I would recommend it! My husband and I ate here twice this week, it was so good!! Very fresh fish, reasonably priced, and good service. I had the Alaska roll, which was delicious and had a wonderful tanginess to it (a bit like Rice Wine vinegar with sugar) and the B.C. roll. I'd asked that no sauce be put on the B.C. roll but I don't think the server understood me, and it came with a spicy (for me) light orange spicy mayo on it. It was still very good though, and the don't skimp in the tobiko, like some places do. My hubby has the toro sashimi and said it was nice and cold and very tasty. He also had the giant Dragon roll, with the eel on top, which he loved. Along with a B.C. roll and a large saki, the bill came to approx. $53.00 before tip. I highly recommend this place!! read more

I've been here so many times. It's usually alright or great. Today, it's the worst. I ordered beef teriyaki. When I ate it, the beef is obviously not fresh at all. My friend and I both tasted it and spited it out. The server told me it's fresh after I told him the situation. I was super speechless. And the server has never refilled our tea at all. This experience is literally the worst. I don't even know how much tip should I give him right now. He was always in a rush when he talked to us. Anyway, I guess I will never come back again. The worst sushi I have ever eaten! All 3 rolls I ordered were warm and had the exact same bland taste. I don't know how they managed to screw up a Negitoro-roll but it tasted like it was heated in a microwave and left on the counter. The only thing I thought was food poisoning. read more

Great little place by China town. I went in with a few friends on a Thursday day. The place is cozy and clean. We ordered sashimi, a couple of special rolls. The price is very reasonable and the portion is HUGE. The service is fast and friendly. The reason I did not give a 5 star is that they charge extra $1.5 for a small palate of steak/yam sauce to go with its sashimi tuna don . After reading tons of yelp reviews for sushi in the downtown area, we decided on heading to Grace. It was 130pm on a Tuesday and we were the only ones there. We thought we might have made a mistake but we were pleasantly surprised! Yes the Miso soup is darker in color. Beef broth based? We werent sure but it was still good. We ordered the roll lunch boxes. Your choice of 8 piece roll plus 2 gyoza, salad, miso, beef or chicken teriyaki over rice and a green tea all only for 10.50. I was a bit apprehensive sitting down but was pleasantly surprised! A bit of a hole in the wall but the sushi rolls and sashimi were fresh and delicious. Grace was my first experience with Victoria sushi, and it was a bit of a bummer. Maybe I've just been spoiled with amazing sushi? But I don't think I am anywhere near to being a sushi snob. The first thing that jumps out to me about the experience at Grace is that the service is pretty so-so. We were seated promptly, but never asked for drinks (either then, or later)--we eventually asked our waitress over to ask for waters. The timing of the food also left a little bit to be desired; my first role (spicy salmon) came out at the same time as my partner's food (she ordered the vege combo), but it was probably another 20-25 min before my second roll (the Grace roll) came out. Admittedly, it was a (much) more complicated speciality roll, but still, I'm not a fan of piecemeal food service. Our waitress, however, was totally friendly. As for the food: We started off with an appetizer of agadashi (deep-fried) tofu--a dish my local sushi place makes that we LOVE. Grace's take on it is a bit different, but the pieces are there for it to be good. The only problem was, however, that they serve it sitting in a pool of sauce; though the sauce is delicious, sitting a fried piece of food in it renders the fried food soggy, which isn't fantastic. They'd be much better off drizzling some of the sauce on top, or serving it on the side so that they could keep the texture of the fried tofu in tact. My partner's vege stuff was "meh" (her verbatim response). The ingredients seemed fresh, but there just wasn't much to be excited about. My spicy salmon roll was disappointing. For one, I'm not a huge fan of when the spicy sauce is on the outside of the roll (I prefer it mixed in with the salmon), and Grace goes a bit overkill with theirs. But the other thing I found a bit weird was the temperature of the sushi--it was cold. This might sound like a weird remark, but given how simple sushi is most times, I find temperature to be a big part of how enjoyable the dish is--the cold made it seem almost like the rolls had been sitting in a refrigerator. Im sure they were made fresh, but I'm just saying that's how they felt to eat. My speciality roll was a different story--it was decidedly okay. Again the temperature complaint was still there, but it was a fun and flavourful roll. I won't be giving up on Victoria sushi yet, but I will say that Grace is a far-cry from a place that makes me want to come back regularly. Still, the Grace Roll is good enough that until I find a place that I can't do without, it'll probably be good enough to scratch a "specialty roll" itch on occasion. read more

Second time in this restaurant. I ordered a miso soup and a green salad to start. The salad was not fresh: it tasted very bitter and some leaves were rotten so I refused to eat them. The miso soup didn't taste at all like any Miso soup in any other japanese restaurant and I've tried more than 20. Worst of all, I could barely find any tofu or wakame and the soup looked dark brown... Thank God, the maki rolls were good. The service could be improved, I don't want to have to ask or stare at the kitchen whenever I need a refill or some ginger they forgot to add. read more
