Had the curry chicken special and a sashimi/rice side it was great! The green tea was also wonderful. The seating area is a little tight for how busy they are. It gets busy as soon as they open! Portion sizes are smaller but it's enough. Great quality fish. I enjoyed it a lot. read more

All I can say is this place is amazing. First time I went was 2018 while visiting in Victoria for four days and I went there three out of the four days and the only reason I couldn't go on the fourth day is because they were closed on that day Finally got to eat there again today & it was just as good as I had it 8 years ago! feels like I stepped into Japan down a quiet alleyway. The rating of this place is insanely high so everytime I came to Victoria I always wanted to give it a try, the hours r very limited so I never got a chance until this time We went half an hour before closing, and it was empty inside. I loved the decor, reminded me of restaurants I went to in Kyoto. We got a teriyaki chicken don, and salmon don. I would have to say, for this portion, this is way overpriced. Maybe there isn't much competition in Victoria for Japanese food but if u come from Vancouver, u don't have to come here since I think there are indeed better spots with better price back in Vancouver. read more

I had a wonderful dining experience at this Japanese restaurant. The quality of the ingredients truly stands out--everything was fresh, flavorful, and thoughtfully prepared. You can really taste the care and attention put into each dish. The staff were friendly, attentive, and very helpful. Special bravo to Jammy for the excellent service and warm hospitality, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The ambiance is very pleasant, with a beautiful Japanese-style atmosphere that adds to the overall dining experience. In terms of pricing, the cost is fair and reasonable, especially considering the quality of the food--it's not outrageous at all. This restaurant clearly focuses on quality over quantity, so if you're looking for large portions rather than refined, high-quality dishes, this may not be the place for you. However, if you appreciate fresh ingredients, great flavors, and a lovely atmosphere, this restaurant is definitely worth a visit. read more

We ordered the last order of their special (Rockfish Collars) only 15 minutes after opening. They had already run out of salmon and mackerel sushi. Packed! Portions were good and everything was deliciously fresh. My party also got the miso soup which was alright (4/5), and the tuna don (4.5/5). read more

This store is only open 4 days a week, 3 hours a day, anyway, WED-SAT at noon in the DT area LUNCH TIME have the opportunity not to miss ah Japanese cafeteria style, not a lot of choices, but each are Japanese people seriously do, the whole atmosphere is very Japanese family style, the meal is mainly a simple, the taste of the original! sashimi donburi island is one of the best, sashimi super super fresh, rice quality is also extremely high, the balance of seasoning is particularly good, salty and light suitable, even mustard are extremely fresh and delicious! The miso soup was also excellent, not the chickeny presence of other Japanese restaurants (of course so they confidently sell a small bowl for $4 I think, but still recommended!) vegetable salad even meat-eaters such as me are very favorite (vegetables are a Japanese farm on the island UMI NAMI FARM fresh delivery), love natto friends say natto is also very tasty (but the first two days to go to the temporary absence) The disadvantage is that the portion is also very "authentic", very Japanese, a meal is not very top full ...... but its own pricing and quality and other Japanese restaurants LUNCH SPECIAL compared to, still value for money! read more

Donburi was amazing, with very fresh sashimi and generous portion at that. They served local kombucha - light, tasty and refreshing!

We happened upon this take out only Japanese eatery by happenstance while walking to the bug zoo - the classic wood sign and hole in the wall atmosphere immediately drew our attention and I placed online orders for our food. We stopped by a little before our pickup time and saw the chef painstakingly preparing each of our dishes with attention to detail. We were amazed by how beautiful the presentation was when we opened up our take out containers and the taste was incredible. The fresh fish melted in our mouths and was on par with market fresh sashimi in Japan. The price was extremely reasonable for the quality. Would love to come back and support this amazing restaurant again next time we're in Victoria! read more

Really cute, charming Japanese place with hole in the wall vibes but high quality. Maybe cause it's a bit tucked away. The area it's in is nice though, there's a little courtyard with semi benches you can eat nearby. I tried the assorted sashimi plate and grilled mackerel. The mackerel was so tender and steaming hot and easy to tear, yum. The sashimi was good, I really liked the seaweed on the rice. Bonus points to the owner who was apologetic about not having enough rice and giving extra fish instead. He was so sweet. read more

Was super excited to try this place because of the good reviews, but overall was fairly unimpressed. Quick version: small space, good food but nothing amazing, a little pricey for their small dishes and they sell out FAST. Not sure I'd come back, but if you're in the area and arriving early, not a bad place to eat. I would skip this place if you arrive more than 30-45 minutes after opening. Long version: I arrived here on a Monday morning at around 11:20am and three or four of their six tables were already taken and seats quickly filled up after that. They were kind enough to let me sit at a table for 4 without the rest of my party being present yet. I made the mistake of not ordering the toro immediately and within 5 minutes it had sold out. Thankfully, another party left and my group of 6 people was able to commandeer the corner booth with the help of the very kind guy behind the counter. We tried their tuna don, salmon don, chicken teriyaki don, green bean side (special of the day with sesame), grilled mackerel, hako sushi with mackerel (salmon was sold out), chicken wings, and rockfish collar. In all of this there were no real wow dishes and I was a little annoyed about the wings and the collar. The "wings" are actually one wing, one neck, and one chicken butt, which are very cheap cuts with minimal meat on them (a neck has almost no meat at all). The rockfish collar for $14 (or $12? I forget) was not just the tender neck meat, but was the head, so again minimal protein, mostly bone. This seemed a high price for a very cheap cut of fish that was not filling. The mackerel sushi was completely uninspired. The bowls / dons were fairly small and not very filling. The best part of the meal was the small portion of green beans, which mixed with black sesame and were very tasty. Service is relatively fast. I emphasize again, they sell out FAST. By the time we finished eating (maybe 12:30pm), they had sold out of everything except for the salmon don, chicken teriyaki don, and green beans. read more

A friend of mine was told by her Japanese friend this is the best Japanese restaurant in Victoria. We went there on Tuesday 13:30, only a few people in there, no waiting time. I was a bit disappointed that they don't have ramen, very few choices( 3 or 4 different Don, sushi, miso soup, etc)I had Tuna Don, onsen egg and tea. I didn't like the rice. It is not as chewy as sushi rice I had before so I didn't finish it even it's just small portion. However, the Tuna was really good!!! You don't really chew it, It's melting in your mouth. I wish they put more Tuna on the rice. I'm not going back as there's not much to choose. read more

Finally was in Victoria at the right timing to try this Shokudo! The photos and the reviews had given me an inkling that this would be a superb authentic Japanese Eatery. I was not disappointed. The food here is a true pure Japanese cuisine, not "a Japanese restaurant" abroad. We ordered a grilled mackerel, a croquet of the day made with kabocha pumpkin, mackerel hako sushi, Daily special which was a miso grilled rockfish, and miso soups. They were all superb. Both grilled fish were perfectly grilled, tender not over cooked, kabocha croquet was huge and with delicious bark miso sauce, mackerel sushi was absolutely amazing. And miso soup was very good with real strong stock. My Canadian husband who has visited Japan many times when I visit my family there, said "OMG! This is like back in Japan!" Well the ambience and the delicately prepared food are both authentic! It is a bold and courageous move as a restaurant owner to limit the menu to the select few as this restaurant does. But it works here as they seem to use only the best ingredients and the each dish is inspired. We have moved to Nanaimo from Vancouver, and are delighted to find this true gem here in Victoria. I think that this is the best Japanese restaurant in Victoria. We look forward to your daily special at our next visit. Do go early. When we arrived today, Friday, at the restaurant 10 minutes before their opening, there was already another couple waiting in front of the restaurant, and in 30 minutes, all the tables were full. read more

I haven't been to Japan yet, however, this cozy, petit, cute, semi hidden gem made me feel in one of those Antony Bourdain episodes. It took me several attempts to finally find Uchida open (Mon-Sat from 11- 2). My advice: arrive before 12 if you want to catch the specials, they erase those words pretty soon... Since the place is always busy, you'll need to be patient once you pay and are given a number with your tray (10 min waiting aprox). You won't care about time once you're indulging. There is a bar with water for you to auto hydrate. I'd order the roasted green tea if I were you! The miso soup is deliciously tick, it simply tastes stronger than in other places. I had a miso salad with extremely fresh and crunchy veggies. A perfect appetizer that closed my first meal in there with a golden ribbon: the grilled mackerel!!! Won't try to describe the juiciness and smokey flavour, just have it. The second time we were waiting at the door at 11:00 3:) We picked our table, were 2nd to pay, had everything on stock. I ordered that day's special: Mapo tofu Don. Such a good combination of ingredients, so glad I wasn't one of the ppl who was told they ran out of the special!!! I though to go today again... it was 2:15 already... :( read more

We're from Toronto and there are a few very good Japanese restaurants that can go toe-to-toe with reputable restaurants in Japan, but one certainly will have to pay the price. So we were particularly excited to find Uchida Shokudo's truly authentic, super fresh and tasty fares at such reasonable prices! We felt even jealous of Victorians with easy access to such high-quality yet reasonably-priced Japanese food at Uchida. We both ordered Tuna Don (Negitoro was already sold out at 12:30). The tuna was very fresh and seared to perfection; the sauce was light yet had depth and complexity (not just salty or excessively sweet -- no additional soy sauce required); lettuce and green onions were fresh and crisp; and rice perfectly cooked. For the price, the tuna portion was quite generous. The bowl was not humongous, but it was just right as we strive to keep our meals in smaller and healthier portions. The service was demured but friendly. The food quality was well worth the short wait between ordering and receiving the food. The ambiance was delightful. Uchida Shokudo is a gem of Japanese restaurants outside of Japan. Our only regret is we didn't discover it soon enough during our ten-day-visit and were therefore unable to dine there more than once. We must return just to have another wonderful lunch here! This eatery is a must for those craving for the Real McCoy of Japanese top-quality light meals. read more

This is real Japanese food :) The restaurant uses a lot of organic vegetables and wild fish and both are very, very fresh every time. I recommend "Hakosushi mackerel or salmon" , "Negitoro don" and daily special , if these are available. You should go there early, around opening time. The picture is "Hiyashi Chuka" It's a cold Japanese dish with noodles and various toppings. It was the daily special (Aug21) but you can only order it during summer season and we can't know when we can, it depends on whether the owner decides it's the special that day. But I promise any daily special is fancy and super delicious. You won't regret it. Also I'd like to recommend their tea called Hojicha brought from jaga silk !! read more

Oh gawd, yes. I had the pleasure of having the Donburi and Grilled Mackerel. Hnnnnhhh, so good: --Donburi- Tuna Don: That fresh tuna toppled over a bed of the best sushi rice ever. The tuna is notably visibly seared on the outside but provides no stiff texture (YES) and the whole piece simply melts in your mouth. And that rice! I ate every morsel. Normally this dish is drizzled with their special soy sauce, but I'm allergic and requested it to be omitted. She warned me the dish would become bland, but I think I did the dish a favor. The ingredients were so simple yet so flavorful on its own. --Grilled Mackerel: Simply grilled and seasoned with salt. Saba shioyaki is one of my favorite items to get, and so I was naturally excited to try it here. Man, it was good. Pro tip: Be there when they open. It's true, they run out of food. How fast they ran out was a surprise! If you only have one day in Victoria, there is a conflict between eating here and Redfish, Bluefish, because they open at the same time. We got to Uchida 20 minutes early and saw no line, so we decided to walk along the Inner Harbor to kill time. We also noticed there was no line at Redfish, Bluefish. We've been to Redfish, Bluefish before and know it's known to have a notoriously long line and long wait for your food thereafter ordering. We decided to go Redfish, Bluefish first instead. We were first in line, first to order, and first to pack away the delicious fish & chips. We made our way to Uchida perhaps at 11:20 AM and behold, the salmon pressed sushi was sold out! Ugh... so going back to the pro tip, be there when they open! Trust me. read more

Uchida Eatery / Shokudo - Donburi: Tuna Don...THE BEST. Get it get it! - Japanese Near Me - Victoria, British Columbia

I'd heard on Yelp that the Japanese restaurant Uchida in Victoria was good and so went on a quest to find it. I say "quest" since it's a bit hidden away in a nondescript office building which houses the Bug Zoo and Ministry of All Things Grain. Eventually, I found the place, a quintessential hole-in-the-wall that looks like a slice of Japan has been transported to downtown Victoria. Having only 8 small tables and maybe twenty chairs, it's best for either very small parties or take out. The tidy kitchen is an open design where you can see the staff preparing the meals - no secrets here! The staff are polite, efficient and focused on their work. I ordered the daily special: chicken donburi cooked with various fresh organic veggies in a mild sesame soy sauce and served over rice with a sunomono side. It came in a smallish bowl with the sunomono in the same bowl. Sunomono is thinly sliced cucumber marinated in rice vinegar seasoned with salt, sugar and sesame seed oil and served with wakame (seaweed) and sometimes sesame seeds. The cucumber looked like a good English cucumber though it wasn't sliced too thin, was light on the wakame and the dressing definitely lacked the sweet-salty-tanginess I'm used to. Also, by placing it on the rice it tended to lose any coldness it had. The chicken donburi dish itself was good, well flavored with nice veggies in it while the rice was properly cooked with just the right amount of stickiness. Its size was a bit small and reminded me more of a heavy appetizer than a full lunch meal. This explains why several people ordered several items to make up a meal. In fact, one young man had two donburis, miso soup, sushi and grilled fish - ahh to have that kind of appetite again! One thing I noticed while eating is the large number of locals eating here, especially Japanese. The place sold out of its first item, salmon and flaked bonito rice balls, in about 20 minutes and then two other items sold out within 55 minutes of its opening. I think they just don't make that many of them and so if a kind of big group comes in there goes the item. I mean the place was busy but not THAT busy for being open 55 minutes. So, if you want to try some rice balls get there early... I next tried the grilled mackerel and it was delicious! Two pieces of perfectly cooked mackerel were served with slices of pickled daikon. It's a bit of a challenge to eat with chopsticks unless you know what you're doing but knives and forks are available. Again, it was well seasoned and perfectly grilled. Overall, it's an excellent example of a Japanese grill with the only raw items being some boxed sushi. It has a small menu but the items taste fresh, are well prepared and a bit unusual when compared to Americanized Japanese restaurant fare. read more

I came about 4 times and have tried really hard to like this place, but there was just nothing too special for me. The first time I went was in early January, but it was closed due to hoiday hours and not posted online (which is fine, entirely understandable). The second time I went, it was halfway through the 3 hours that they were open so the small menu was nearly entirely sold out. I ordered the salmon don, waited about 30 minutes (as it was busy and at full capacity, about 20 people in the restaurant), only to have the wrong order. I had the tuna don anyway because I was not expecting to wait so long. Also, their open kitchen shows that they use 3-4 home sized rice cookers rather than an industrial one so not long after I ordered, they ran out of rice entirely. Normally you can choose to have white or brown rice. The tuna was nicely marinated but the portion was quite small for $15 after tip. The third time I went, it was again halfway through their short hours. They had sold out of all of the donburi and lunch special but I saw that the saba sushi was still available. I wanted to order two servings since I believe it was 6 pcs each. They had one order left so I had to leave because 6 pcs wasn't enough for lunch. The fourth time I learned to come near opening so I could try something different. Now, it's easy to overlook the lunch special menu which is a small chalkboard leaning on the glass (because the main menu is a large one hanging over the cashier). I ordered the negitoro and salmon dons, the vegetable side and a miso. The negitoro was good but not extraordinary; the salmon was again, well marinated like the tuna. Out of the 3 I've tried I would say the salmon was my favourite. However, I still was not full despite 2 bowls of rice. The vegetable side dish was also cold because it was just sitting beside the cashier. The service was friendly throughout all my visits, but I found it difficult to really like this place because items on the menu are sold out so quickly, the hours are very short (11-2) and the prices are quite steep for the portions. read more

Charming and delicious mom and pop fish eatery. Pricey but quality food. Bright, cheerful service. Authentic Japanese locale, setting, and details. Food 5/5 Service 5/5 Value 3/5 Locale 5/5 We had both salmon and tuna donburis with a grilled mackerel on the side, plus two miso soups. Grilled mackerel was masterfully deboned and cooked perfectly. Tuna was awesome, salmon might have been better. Staff was exactly the bright and cheerful doting type of service I so thoroughly enjoyed while on business travel in Asia. Not common in North America (especially in the US), and it was a delightful change of service compared to so many other rude non-customer focused service I've experienced. In asian cultures, the customer is king - you will feel this way here at Uchida. Value is perhaps the only major flaw I found here, which was otherwise I delightful, "recharging" experience both from a food and service aspect. Two donburis, two small miso soups, and a grilled mackerel side cost almost $40CAD for lunch. I know they are using quality food and service is wonderful, but it just seemed a little pricey for lunch. On top of that, when ordering the donburis, I was asked whether if I wanted either miso or vegetable miso soups - I mistakenly assumed that such a question implied that the soups were included, but they weren't. They were an additional $2.50CAD each. I think the more appropriate way to ask that question would have been "Would you like a ____ soup for an additional _____?" Still, I was happy with the overall experience and wouldn't discourage anyone from trying Uchida - just a tad bit on the expensive side, that is all. Please see attached receipt of my meal for more details on that. Also feel free to take a look at the photo of the menu. They've raised prices a tad across the board, which is understandable and done in a reasonable fashion. Note that someone else uploaded an older menu with lower prices from quite some time ago. Locale is really nice, and a clear "immersive" Japanese experience, from what I've heard from my Japanese friends. I think the people and the eatery itself would make any Japanese person home sick for Japan feel right at home. It's very charming and super nice. For those complaining about how small it is, yes it is small. But clearly they have never been to Tokyo or SF. It's cozy but doable. My favorite mom and pop restaurant in SF (Tani's Kitchen) is easy twice as small and crowded as Uchida. Overall, highly recommend. read more

My colleagues and I have eaten here probably a half dozen times, if not more, and I have had an outstanding meal EVERY SINGLE TIME. This is the kind of small, intimate Japanese restaurant that you might find in a movie about food, but minus the drama. Add extra delicious food made with care and love. I've had the negitoro don, the chicken teriyaki don (only because they were out of everything else), several of their cold udons, their spicy fried chicken wings, and the mackerel - and they've all been outstanding. Also consider their onigiri's and a cup of Jagasilk tea - and you've got a heck of a meal. But beware! If you get there after noon, the line starts getting long AND the special will run out. The staff here is also super polite and very helpful. If a Japanese meal is your goal for the day, go to Uchida. You will not be disappointed. read more

Holy hopping spot Batman! This place is the definition of a hidden gem and I thank Peter E for again steering me in the right direction. A wonderful lunch spot indeed! Tiny as heck, it's tucked behind the bug zoo and found simply by the sheer number of people trying to cram themselves into the place around noon. The menu is simple and written up on a blackboard as you arrive. Nothing extravagant to be had, this place specializes in bowls with various toppings - from tuna to chicken terriyaki - that all come in at a cool $9.50. Along the little bar, they'll sport 2-3 veggie sides (about $3.50) and a $10 special each day. A tiny, tidy little menu and trust me, you won't miss the selection. Everything made here, is the freshest of the fresh. It's the perfect spot to grab a healthy lunch without resorting to the same ol' salad we're all so sick of. Today's special was rockfish with various pickled goodies and a wasabi chard salad. It was the perfect, "sit on a bench and watch the world go by, while able to get your ass up in 20 minutes and be sans lunch-coma perky" sort of meal. With an add on of miso, brown rice and a sparkling water - I was stuffed without feeling like a piece of lard and it came out to $16.50. Bam. This place quickly secured itself as my lunch go-to for the next two days of my work trip and if you're local? You lucky devils. Go here often. Tip: apparently they close when they run out of food, which could be anywhere from 1pm-3pm so hustle down at noon! read more

We've been to Uchida a few times and we really wanted to like it. We've tried the tuna belly don, tuna don, grilled mackerel, chicken wings, rice balls, the salads, miso soup and few other side dishes. Yes, the dons were delicious, fresh tuna and the mustard greens nicely compliment the dish. However, the mackerel was salty, and the chicken wings way TOO salty! So much so that we needed to order an extra bowl of rice to 'wash' down the saltiness. Customer Service: Slow and not attentive. Almost self-serve.
