They have a few tables and only one was occupied when I arrived and only a couple people got takeout while I was there. It's not a place you come to for the ambiance. However, the sushi rolls were excellent. My wife had numerous questions which were answered promptly and knowledgably. Our salads (Seaweed and Green) were both excellent. The green salad had a few different types of lettuce, baby spinach, cucumber, avacado, and a very tasty dressing. I was impressed because it wasn't the typical "sushi place" salad I'm used to. The spicy tuna roll was certainly spicy and fresh. The Rock & Roll was amazing. The seared, chopped scallops on top were a great addition to the cucumber, avocado, crab meat, and sauce. The Washington Roll was a little similar with cucumber, avocado, and crabmeat inside, but the fresh salmon on top was delicious. The Awesome Roll again was similar with the cucumber, avocado, and crabmeat inside, but cooked salmon on top, with crispy yam strands on top of that. Excellent presentation and taste. I was a little concerned about trying the place because it had five stars, but not many reviews, and none recent. I'm happy I tried it and recommend it to the locals and visitors as well. (I was visiting Victoria from the US.)

=== 1. VERDICT/VALUE I really want to support local…read morebusinesses and the service is good - but the food (at least on this visit) gives me pause to return, especially with much better quality from nearby competitors. === 2. FOOD Nabeyaki Udon ($19.95) Some argue the price is a little high; I actually think it's fine. It's got a little bit of everything - from prawn tempura (ok, but definitely has batter), egg, chicken, fish, veg - it's comforting but it could use some tempura sauce which was either forgotten by the staff or not an option here. Sushi Hunter ($23.95) Definitely not ordering again - for this price, you only get: - Six pieces of California roll (which may have been pre-made because the rice was hard). - 5 pieces of nigiri. Oak Bay Roll ($8.50) It's good if you like cream cheese and smoked salmon - thankfully, the rice was soft and fresh and it should be for sushi. Chicken Katsu - Kid's Meal ($12) I love the fact Machi offers kids meals - something no one else seems to offer! And they come in plastic plate with a plastic cup - all kid-friendly. But...the value is hard to see for the price (refer to picture) - even at this rate, my little one was still hungry afterward. === 3. SERVICE Overall the service was good to great. The food service was on the slow side, but thankfully, it prioritized serving the kid's meal first - by coincidence or intention. The older gentleman behind the counter was great in walking over to every table to see how things were going, serving the occasional dish / refilling water while making conversation. === 4. ENVIRONMENT The taller ceilings are nice - the place has a clean, airy feel to it. It's not crazy big but you could likely link tables together to get a group of up to 10 at a time. Wheelchairs and baby strollers fit just fine. Parking is going to be in the very limited few spots in the shopping complex lot out front or more likely on the nearby streets.

We used to like this place, good-not great, always feels comfortable and ok value. Tonight was a total miss - amateur hour for sure, service was crazy slow, no beverage refills , food wasn't that good ....nigiri's were falling over, crab nigiri was 70% mayonnaise.... ick, ick, Ick! Lots of take out here, at times seems the priority. It is really annoying to have the take out people staring at you meal, coughing and hacking away as they stand awkwardly close to your table... go away!! Crispy tempura was the only highlight :( In no hurry to come back....

It is...if you're looking for a place to get takeout sushi that's average to decent along with other Japanese condiments candies and groceries. === 2. FOOD The takeout sushi is all refrigerated. So it's tough to say that hot items (like don bowls) taste good when they're cold, but at least the items that are supposed to be cold taste decent. - Shrimp California Roll: Nice twist on the standard! - Mabo Tofu Don: it's cold, it's congealed, salty sauce chunks; no thanks. - Sashimi Combo: decent! - Hawaiian Poke: haha, coming from Hawaii it's certainly not, but it's fine if you eat it with rice. - Ebi Tempura Don: it's cold, tempura mushy - pass. === 3. SERVICE Apart from the fact the kitchen staff could not tell me how they make the poke (perhaps it's made elsewhere? A bit of a concern...) all staff were nice, professional and able to speak English and Japanese. === 4. ENVIRONMENT Think corner store with a refrigerated section that offers packaged sushi to go. If you've been to smaller towns in Japan, you'll feel right at home. Its cozy narrow aisles stocked with all assortments of imported Japanese items are complemented by warm greetings from all of the staff. It'd be best to leave your wheelchairs and baby strollers outside where possible; the eight or so parking spots are often full but not needing a lot of waiting time given the frequent in-and-out of the takeout clientele.
