Fisherman's Roll and Black Pearl Roll

Decided to give this place a try during our first trip to Victoria and we weren't disappointed! Great service, amazing staff and the food was delicious!

Sushi was very good, one of the best places I've tried in Victoria! The Japa roll and the Eeelinois were our favourites! Service was a little bit slow but they were friendly. Restaurant is nice and clean inside as well! Definitely give it a try!

Nubo Japanese Tapas (Douglas & Blanshard Location) 739 Pandora Avenue, Victoria,BC we had a short trip in Victoria and my cousin sent me a message asking us to try Japanese Tapas restaurant and the name is called Nubo Japanese Tapas. As a matter of curiosity, we would like to know what is the Tapas in a Japanese offered? It ended up having a good meal although it was raining so heavy, we still went there! Tapas is similar to Izakaya are the go-to choice for after-work dinner parties. Similar to an Irish pub or a tapas bar, they are informal, inexpensive and a lot of fun. The typical izakaya serves ice-cold beer and a variety of other spirits and soft drinks. They do have a good pub and they are just serving a typical Japanese restaurant does. That's ok as long as the food is fresh and delicious. I don't need to know what is exactly the Tapas in a Japanese restaurant. I can see a lot of customers who come in to the restaurant on their own , I can find only one table which looks like they are talking about business! Due to the rain was so heavy , we decided to leave earlier to prepare the check out by tomorrow morning

So disappointing... ordered this vegan sushi roll with fried yam on top to go. It looked totally unappetizing and tasted weird. They also put this green smashed avocado topping on top which I think is a big mistake for to-go. It turns brown and they should've put it in a to-go sauce container on the side. It was a huge disappointment. Can't review on the other stuff but I actually wish I got my money back. If the owner sees this review, I'm willing to do another review and delete this one if I get a refund. Such a disappointment because their lunch special is actually amazing. But def not this. It was a hit and miss. For $13 this should be scrapped from the menu for sure.

Understated excellence! We visited from the U.S., wanted a nice light meal, and walked from Hotel Rialto. I can't say enough about the quality and freshness of the Sushi. We tried a flaming role (yes, they fired it on the table side) and miso soup. I know this sounds boring, but when you've been eating rich food, this is just what we need. The staff was outstanding, and the meal was one of our favorites. Try the house hot tea because this is the first time we've had something like it.

Everything here was so incredible! The staff and chefs are all so friendly and helpful! All the dishes tasted amazing & so fresh. All the sushi rolls were some of the best I've ever had. The curry udon was probably the best curry udon I've ever eaten. The drinks were so pretty and yummy. I absolutely loved it here and cannot wait to visit whenever I'm in Victoria again :)

Sukiyaki nabe and lucky strike roll

First time in Victoria and this was our first place for dinner, it was delicious! It's a smaller spot but very cozy and good vibes overall. The servers were really nice and efficient. We got the takoyaki to start which was delicious. I got the sukiyaki nabe (beef udon) and the broth was so well flavored and the noodles were perfect. My partner got the lucky strike roll, he said it was the best sushi he's ever had outside of NYC. Would definitely recommend this spot! Happy we came

So yummy and unique! My dad of all people found this spot for a late weekend dinner. He was very motivated (hungry) while we walked all around the touristy areas by the waterfront. I don't usually count on my pops to find restaurants for us, but in the case of this one, it was a win! We ordered several items to share and each was more delectable than the previous item. Of course I had to order the monkey brains. No question! Service was good and the food was prepared quickly. Everything was plated nicely and we had a great meal. I will definitely return on my next visit. Parking after 8pm on the weekend was easy - though it is confusing on the map where it shows 3 Nubo restaurants.

We only had 24 hours in Victoria and this place came highly recommended by a friend who was there the month prior. We love Japanese food so that was all we needed to give it a shot. Hands down the best meal of our trip. Unique and interesting menu items. Everything was prepared to perfection and full of amazing flavor. Staff was kind, attentive and knowledgeable. Wish we could have gone back a second time!

Sea food udon

Based on other yelp reviews we tried this great sushi place. A bit of a hike from the ferry stop but well worth it. We had 3 lunch specials. Amazing sashimi very fresh and generous cuts. My husband had the most incredible seafood udon. He kept pulling out more and more goodies. We arrived at 11:30 when they opened ,and were able to secure the only table not reserved for lunch. Great prompt service. Would go again for sure!

Love the wide variety of options! Including vegan mayo. The service was great. We went around 2pm so we were the only ones. My fav was the body & soul roll. There was 20% gratuity for 5+ ppl.

Sashimi and sushi TEISHOKU

We found this listing on yelp and we weren't disappointed. We got the TEISHOKU, which is the lunch special. I had mine with karaage don, fried chicken karaage with Japanese butter mayo on rice and my husband had his with sashimi and sushi. Great variety in the meal and the service was wonderful.

After…read morenearly every dish, we found ourselves looking at each other saying, "Wow... oh my God, that's amazing." The pork belly bao is generously sized and easily shareable. The bun was incredibly fresh, light, and pillowy, while the pork belly was melt-in-your-mouth tender with the perfect balance of richness and tang from the kimchi. The pickled vegetables added a bright crunch that tasted incredibly fresh. We started with the salmon tartare, and it was phenomenal! Rich, buttery, bursting with flavor, and so good we were literally fighting over the last bite. And the scallop? Order one for each person. Seriously. It's far too delicious to share. It had just the right amount of heat, leaving the perfect lingering warmth that immediately made us want another. Do yourself a favor and give yourself enough time to work your way through the menu, because every dish we tried was outstanding. Each plate was thoughtfully curated, beautifully executed, and cooked to perfection. I like to call it the C³ trifecta: curated, created, and cooked. Without question, this is some of the best food we've had in a very long time. We can't wait to come back (when visiting) and continue eating our way through the rest of the menu.

Ambiance was great - super warm and welcoming which was magnified by the host. Super lovely. Then the wait staff. Whoever is hiring/training is doing a great job! We also sat right beside the pick up window so it was fun seeing food come out! The food was fantastic. See pictures for what we ordered. Not sure if I can remember the names of everything but it was a perfect combo!!

Review Template ===…read more1. VERDICT/VALUE With a menu from across a variety of Asian cultures, Tropical Island tries to everything to everyone and at least for this one takeout experience, it does - falling short only on portion size. === 2. FOOD Our order was takeout and so the portion sizes were small (see photos for scale of the smaller tin pans with chopsticks); however, the quality of the food was decent overall! Chicken Satay ($13) Four skewers come at this price with some sort of mild-ish spicy oil-based peanut sauce on the side. The chicken is relatively meaty and tender! Beef Vegetable Delight ($19) With lotus root, carrots, onions, celery, and broccoli on tap with thin slices of beef, this is a dish you'll enjoy with rice or another starch. Green Beans ($19) One of the recommended house dishes by the server; it was decent - no minced pork like that found in Chinese restaurants, but it does have red and green peppers and onions. === 3. SERVICE The server at the counter was good and professional, balancing myself, app-order delivery drivers, and dine-in guests. The staff here seemed to speak English and Manadarin. The food was prepared fairly quickly, tho this may be due to having only 4 tables of dine-in guests at the time of order. === 4. ENVIRONMENT It's not a looker - it starts with narrow hallway with two small bench-type seats for those waiting at the counter, before opening into an older seating area. Wheelchairs and baby strollers should fit well enough once you get through the hallway. Parking is interesting - a few spots are located out front (watch out for one with a small Do Not Park sign on the wall) and there are a few more spots across the alleyway.

Wow. Amazing. We were on a romantic getaway to Victoria this summer and decided to stop by Bodega…read morefor lunch. We got there when it opened and the few people working that day just made the experience one to remember. Sat at the bar and had a few spectacular cocktails while sampling many meats and cheeses on their charcuterie board. Bread was perfect... ordered a refill. I should start with a disclaimer - tapas is one of my absolute favorite meals, and I didn't care…read morefor some of my dishes here. HOWEVER. I also live in Washington DC (one of my favorite tapas places there is funnilly also called Bodega) and it is very possible tapas here is different from what I am used to. I haven't had tapas elsewhere in Victoria or anywhere else in Canada. I also wonder if I would have preferred its sister restaurant next door. I asked the hostess what the difference was and she said the one next door was more of a sit down family restaurant. And, to that effect, all of the indoor tables at Bodega were high tops, which I find uncomfortable, so we had to sit on the patio. The ceviche here is incredible. A standout. I have had ceviche in many places over many years and in many countries and types of restaurants, including places that just do ceviche. This may be my favorite ceviche ever. The next most impressive dish we had was a squash with pepitas and other toppings. I asked what kind of squash it was and they said they didn't know for sure because it comes from the chef's mother's farm so it can rotate. On the one hand I find this incredibly charming. On the other hand, I asked because I have dietary restrictions and cannot digest patty pan squash. They assured me it wasn't that, but their inability to tell me exactly what it was didn't engender confidence. Luckily, chatgpt was able to identify it from a photo and it was one that I know is safe for me. We ordered gambas al ajillo, which is normally one of my favorites, and I found it underwhelming. Just not very flavorful. Also I am used to it coming out in a ceramic baking dish or cast iron but this was just in a bowl which seemed odd and may contribute to why I found it less flavorful. Patatas Bravas were solid but also hard to mess up. My husband got some meat items that I didn't eat as a pescatarian but he enjoyed them. And my least favorite dish was a dish featuring albacore tuna, egg and tapenade. I normally love all three of these things and was intrigued by the fact that it was albacore vs ahi or yellow fin or some other fancier type. I ended up finding the tuna dry and tough and the olive tapenade and hard boiled egg offered a lot of the exact same types of flavors and it just wasn't a very pleasant dish to eat in my opinion. Other people might love this. I dunno. I also found service here a little chilly. This is a hard thing for me to rate because I am aware that there are significant cultural differences between Canada and the US and servers in the US are unusually effusive and attentive, in extreme cases to a point of being overbearing, whereas in Canada servers may prioritize not interrupting or getting in the way over being chatty. But even compared to other restaurants we visited in Victoria this felt a little frosty, especially when it came to my dietary restrictions. I very much got a vibe from multiple people that it was weird for me to ask questions about what was in the food or about the restaurant. All in all this wasn't bad. Other people seemed to be enjoying themselves. I think it is a very distinctive style and ambiance and it is going to be a match for some customers and not others, but I personally prefer something with warmer ambiance and more accessible dishes.
