L-R: spider roll (special), vegetable roll, bbq salmon roll

If you're familiar with Victoria then you know it's not laced with a ton of spectacular restaurants. I am so glad we found this little gem bc it was great! I think we came on a Thursday evening and wow it was packed with people. That's a good sign if there's a lot of people dining in IMO. Pro tip: make sure to make a RSVP if you can bc like I said, this place is bumping. Street parking only. Service was friendly, a little slow, probably bc they were so busy, but wasn't too terrible. Let's get to the good eats, I'm gonna keep it simple and only share the items that you SHOULD order. BEEF UDON - wow it was spectacular! So much flavor. The whole family enjoyed this dish GINGER BEEF - another stellar beef dish. Ton of flavors, tender, and just perfect. I didn't get to enjoy much sushi, given it's a sushi restaurant, bc I was pregnant. I also can't remember if the cooked rolls that we ordered were good or not oops sorry lol I would come back just for those 2 beef dishes that I mentioned! This place has definitely been bookmarked for future Victoria trips.

Grilled salmon. Too dry but still tasted good.

We felt the rolls were just okay. The salmon was way over cooked and not amazing. Prices are quite high for what you get.

My friend suggested to come to Sen Zushi as it's one of her favourite restaurants in town. It is a Japanese operated Japanese restaurant with delicate details. The décor was traditionally Japanese. It was quiet with nice ambiance. The server was very friendly and polite. She checked on us for tea from time to time. We ordered the dinner combo bento box so we can try a little of everything. Mine was the assorted sashimi and my friend's was the sautéed fish. It came with miso soup, shrimp sunomono salad, assorted tempura, baked oyster, sushi and a bowl of white rice. The sashimi was very fresh. The tempura was not very greasy. The wasabi was spicy with the actual kick. My friend liked her sautéed fish also. Overall, everything was quite delicious. After finishing our food (couldn't finish the rice), we were too full to try their dessert.

This place own by Japanese, food was delicious, I ordered the salmon sashimi, they were very fresh. Good atmosphere, but they close too early....9 pm already closed.

This is the best sushi place in the city. Fresh, clean restaurant, friendly service and very reasonably priced. Went for the first time last last, sat at the bar and enjoyed the experience. Lots of staff and nice seating arrangements, space between customers. The place is a little dark but then again most sushi places are. Honourable mentions are Shizen and Ebizo, but I'm telling you this is #1

I mean, what the hell is this crap?!?

THIS REVIEW IS FOR ONE VISIT ONLY! To be clear, I visit SenZushi often and it is always fantastic. Then why the one star, jerknuts? Well, I am particularly disappointed with my most recent experience, and I thought one star might draw attention to that. Let me explain. I had a brutal day at work where I made a mistake that could potentially cost me my job. I didn't feel like cooking, nor did I feel like thinking. So, I went to SenZushi, my favourite restaurant in town, and ordered omakase. Expecting to be presented with an assortment of delights, I was instead asked what I wanted. Well, having ordered omakase, I expected the chef would decide, not me. I said "Surprise me! I like all the raw stuff, all the cooked stuff, all the weird stuff, everything! I even like natto!" More questions. "Do you want nigiri, sashimi?" I want omakase. I finally just say that I'm hungry and want sushi. My plate arrives. 8-piece nigiri. All excellent. I finish and wait for more. Nothing. The server cones by after ten minutes and asks if I would like anything else. I say, "Yes. More." She gives me a menu. SenZushi is great, and perhaps this experience is a result of living in a place that is entirely clueless about Japanese cuisine, but this, this was not omakase. This has made my terrible day worse. I will be back, SenZushi, but not for a while, and I will not order omakase. UPDATE: Well, I thought the last one was a one off, butvthe nigiri they served me tonight was complete garbage. I'm posting the picture. It's just the ugliest piece of sushi I've ever seen in my life.

Excellent menu - lots of options. We enjoyed the takoyaki, tempura, seafood udon, sashimi and various special rolls. Very friendly service.

Chirashi don! Lots of fresh sashimi on rice.

Great place if you wan a nice atmosphere and great selection of Japanese sakes. Make sure to order their sashimi and nigiri since this is a place with fresh fish! Their teriyaki and chicken nabban is good too for those who don't eat raw fish.

Food was great, but the environment was a bit noisier than we expected. Sort of a baby-friendly restaurant. The food worths the price. Especially the Unagi Don and Sashimi. I went there for the second time, made a reservation and it was on a weekday so I assumed that can save us time. Nope. Waited for the first dish for almost an hour. Before that all we got were two cups of iced water. Hmm. Food was awesome as usual, but took forever.

Stopped in for lunch, such a cute little spot! The sushi was amazing! It was so delicious and super fresh. Our waitress Randi was attentive and friendly. I got the Dr. Achim eel roll and my boyfriend got the rainbow roll. Highly recommend both. Definitely be back in here next time we are in town.

    Spicy tuna hand roll starter.

Wow! This really surpassed my expectations! I had this and another sushi joint bookmarked to check out tonight for dinner. My fault is, I went to the "other" place first, but I knew it wasn't quite right the first minute I walked in the door, but being I was already in, I felt obligated to order something, so I did... glad I only got a couple pieces of very low quality, flavorless, and grainy pieces of nigiri so I had room to try some more here!!! I just wish I solely came here for dinner though, as this place blew away the competition in quality, price and atmosphere, hands down!!!! This place was amazing! Great vibe, people, food, hang, everything... I hope to get time to revisit it before in leaving town SOON!!! Just go here!

The vibe in the restaurant was nice. Felt like we were teleported away for a few hours. Everyone was chatting away eating. It was an open space, but not hard to have a conversation. Our waitress was prompt and attentive. She made great recommendations on wine and food. We ended up taking advantage of their special shared tapas menu for two at $59.50 CAD. I ordered some wine by the glass to go with some of the dishes. We didn't have any preference in the order, so our waitress brought things out as we finished. The spread included bacon wrapped stuffed dates, chorizo puffs, salad, veggies, croquettas, patatas bravas, prawns, beef short ribs, and a chocolate mousse-like dessert. Everything was so tasty! It starts off so well with the bacon wrapped stuff dates and you think there will be a dip in taste at some point. I believe the only dish we didn't finish were the veggies, done ratatouille style, we were pretty full so we chose not to finish this one and make sure we could eat dessert. She did figure out I was american when I tried to give her my credit card. I always forget they bring those credit card devices to your table outside the US. I would definitely go back to try some of the other menu options.

We are big fans of traditional fare, but the Block is a place we are so glad we experienced and will certainly return utilizing the knowledge we garnered during our first experience. A big thank you to for helping us through picking one price fixe January exploration of your local restaurants and filling it with other ala carte additions. As we often do we ordered far too much food, wanting to explore everything off a menu that is far reaching. Not sure if our additions worked with the price fixe menu, but we sure enjoyed checking everything out. The interior is interesting with the addition of structural steel in the space to keep this heritage building (I think) standing tall for a few generations. We sure hope it's still here for a long while and will most likely come again the next time we are in Victoria. That is saying a lot as there are a wide range of restaurants in the neighbourhood, but you do want to check the Block out!
