It is small and hidden. But it always full. No where to eat in, but it is great for take out. We wanted the cheap platters for Christmas Eve, but even though it said to order two platters was a 2 hour wait, when we phoned at 10 am to place our order, they said that they needed 24 hours notice. PLEASE make sure your website is up to date. Because I have a screen shot saying that if you had 2 or less platters, you would only need a 2 hour wait. 3 or more platters require 24hours. So we went in and chose a bunch of different options. Everything was good and cheap. There wasn't a stand out. And there wasn't a let down. It's exam season now, so at this point, I live and breathe sushi because it's so darn quick and easy. I recently went here four days in a row and had absolutely no regrets. I am still an avid California Rolls girl and will nearly always stock up on two boxes here. If I don't have any other food with me, I'll add in a Salmon Bowl just for good measure. (Gotta make those long hours of studying pass somehow...) Now, I've reviewed the California Roll ($3.45) before and have commented on the consistency in presentation. This is still a recurring issue as I have noticed that they are sometimes haphazardly made, with the filling disproportionate among the rolls, the rolls falling apart, and/or some of the rolls squished altogether. This may be due to a mad rush to pump them out, kitchen staff still in training, and/or customers carelessly placing the containers. Thankfully, on a recent visit, they were so beautifully made that I let out an audible gasp. I've tried other rolls at Fujiya before like the Fujiya Roll (yum), Dynamite Roll (yum), Shrimp California Roll (yum), and BC Roll (dry), but for the price of $3.45 for nine large pieces of imitation crab meat and avocado goodness, the California Roll cannot be beat. As with the California Roll though, there have been some issues with inconsistency too; for example, the Fujiya Roll had some pieces missing shrimp, but this was ultimately accounted for with a reduced price. But enough about the rolls. Let's talk the Salmon Bowl ($4.95) because it is glorious. Aside from two occasions where the salmon sashimi tasted a bit off and/or the rice was hard, this rice bowl is something that I daydream about from time to time. There are cubes of seasoned salmon sashimi, shredded tamago, and green onion nestled on top of a bed of sushi rice. Consider yourself lucky if you get there right as freshly made bowls come out because the rice will still be warm and will contrast beautifully with the cold salmon sashimi. While I've had several of the hot bowls (Spicy Korean Pork, Pork Cutlet, Beef, Prawn Tempura) at Fujiya before, they simply pale in comparison to this bowl. For me, it's one that physically cannot be shared with others. A few miscellaneous things: - I've asked the staff before whether it is possible to bring my own container in order to cut down on the plastic used. Unfortunately, due to the risk of cross-contamination, Fujiya won't allow it. - If you're looking to save a few dollars and don't mind what you get, then consider coming ~1 hour before closing as a few items may be marked down. - Fujiya no longer provides outdoor seating due to limited space. If you walk up Shelbourne though, there are two picnic areas at the grassy area near McDonald's that you can dine at. That's all - time to roll me out. read more

While it's a very small spot and you have to line up it's the best place for cheap sushi that doesn't taste like shit and sells authentic Japanese foods and snacks for decent price. I always get my matcha from there and it's the highest quality in vic I guarantee as an actual Japanese person! With the staff they are so sweet and super helpful, I always have a good experience when going there. I really hope they expand the store!!! read more

Dropped by on a whim and evidently during the dinner rush. This place is crazy, it's the size of a small-shop with a small parking lot on both sides of the shop. The back has a small top side cooler with fresh sushi that gets put out during peak-times. I grabbed a few and they were great quality! We got one veggie heavy and one with raw fish. We picked up a cold tea in the cooler on the way to the cash register and pretty low key. The place also doubles as a small Japanese grocery store, they have snacks, to freezer friendly natto, and more offerings. read more

This is the most inexpensive place for take out in Victoria, sushi or otherwise. They sell some rolls or bento boxes for as low as $2.50 and the quality is high. They have a steady stream of customers coming in so everything is very fresh. This is not a restaurant it's a grocery store/grab-and-go type of place so don't expect to sit down and eat there. My favorite activity on a sunny day is to bring a bag of Fujiya to a park for a sushi picnic; delicious and healthy fun. read more

I got out with a beef rice bowl and a fried chicken bento for ~$6. My friends got the sushi/sashimi and they really liked it especially for the price point. Fujiya is known for its take out sushi, but there is so much more for such a little place. First off the sushi is the best "grocery store sushi" in Victoria. It is big, tasty and extremely fresh. They also have take out donburi, sashimi and kara-age. The range is quite impressive and very inexpensive. The store also has a pretty big range of frozen fish to make your own sushi/sashimi at home as well as Japanese favourites like sanma, buri and shio-jake. Big candy/senbei section and 6 or 7 difference varieties of rice. Fresh tsukemono too. This place can be busy, but they have three cashiers on at times and I've seen more than a dozen in the back making sushi. Parking can be tough, though I've been known to skooch into the BMO parking lot...my bad. Can ya tell I'm a fan....? read more

I've had people recommend this place to me and tbh, I don't get it. It's a small supermarket with fresh sushi (and other stuff) in packages. Sushi is falling apart because everyone gets their grubby hands on the packages and just toss it back down if they choose not to buy it. The prices are fine and it didn't taste bad but.... I just.... Not the best sushi in town, but great value for the price you pay! Everything is really reasonable between $4-$8 for rolls. They have rice dishes as well. My favs: salmon maki roll, yam tempura, and spicy tuna ongiri. Their chicken karaage is decent as are their rice dishes. I haven't been disappointed by anything I've purchased here. This place used to be pretty good for sushi. Probably still better than a lot of places, but that has a lot to do with price I think. Small Japanese grocery store with staff making and packaging sushi in the back. Not a fan of refrigerated sushi as you should know why. Cheap sushi to go, but it seems hardly worth it at times. You have to navigate a tiny shop while battling tons of people lining up in the aisles. For some reason people are trying to get the 'best' item and it gets pretty rude in there. Past couple times I ate sushi I got relatively grossed out. I don't think the ingredients are very fresh anymore. Worth a try, you decide. read more

Love this little shop/sushi place. Super fresh sushi ready to go (no sitting area) price is very reasonable and you can get some soup to go with the sushi. This is a great place to stop by and pack some picnic before heading to the beach, Butchard Garden or on the way to the ferry. Love their spicy salmon and the miso soup. Go here for cheap and easy takeout sushi. The rice dishes are iffy, as the meat and vegetables get soggy over time with the sauce and condensation. Since it is a grocery store, that's as good as it gets for takeout rice dish. read more

Being from Vancouver my sushi standards are set pretty high. This sushi is ok, I'm not a big fan of pre made and then refrigerated sushi. The rice gets too hard and other ingredients too cold. It's my fav Sushi spot! It's cheap, convenient, fast and delicious. There's parking on either side of the store. Ask for their Miso soup just behind the fridge that holds all the sushi. If they don't have something, just ask the people preparing the sushi and they'll make it for you in double quick time. read more

Was in the area for a short visit and my cousin brought me here last month. It is a small Japanese grocery store with a take out section at the back with great prices. Gosh -- salmon don - salmon sashimi on a bowl of sushi rice for under C$5! I had the salmon sashimi and it was fresh, and the shrimp maki was also good! We got over $60 worth of assorted take out maki rolls, sashimi, etc enough to feed 7 people and we still had leftovers. It was a great picnic lunch which we took with us up where the picnic benches were before you reached the top at Mt Tolmie. Funny thing was, as we were leaving, a couple arrived and they also had with them takeout from Fujiya! read more
