Review Template === 1. VERDICT/VALUE Is the hype real? It is...if you're looking for a place to get takeout sushi that's average to decent along with other Japanese condiments candies and groceries. === 2. FOOD The takeout sushi is all refrigerated. So it's tough to say that hot items (like don bowls) taste good when they're cold, but at least the items that are supposed to be cold taste decent. - Shrimp California Roll: Nice twist on the standard! - Mabo Tofu Don: it's cold, it's congealed, salty sauce chunks; no thanks. - Sashimi Combo: decent! - Hawaiian Poke: haha, coming from Hawaii it's certainly not, but it's fine if you eat it with rice. - Ebi Tempura Don: it's cold, tempura mushy - pass. === 3. SERVICE Apart from the fact the kitchen staff could not tell me how they make the poke (perhaps it's made elsewhere? A bit of a concern...) all staff were nice, professional and able to speak English and Japanese. === 4. ENVIRONMENT Think corner store with a refrigerated section that offers packaged sushi to go. If you've been to smaller towns in Japan, you'll feel right at home. Its cozy narrow aisles stocked with all assortments of imported Japanese items are complemented by warm greetings from all of the staff. It'd be best to leave your wheelchairs and baby strollers outside where possible; the eight or so parking spots are often full but not needing a lot of waiting time given the frequent in-and-out of the takeout clientele. read more

It is small and hidden. But it always full. No where to eat in, but it is great for take out. We wanted the cheap platters for Christmas Eve, but even though it said to order two platters was a 2 hour wait, when we phoned at 10 am to place our order, they said that they needed 24 hours notice. PLEASE make sure your website is up to date. Because I have a screen shot saying that if you had 2 or less platters, you would only need a 2 hour wait. 3 or more platters require 24hours. So we went in and chose a bunch of different options. Everything was good and cheap. There wasn't a stand out. And there wasn't a let down. I also liked that there were other choices for my non sushi lover to bring out. All in all a good bang for your buck read more

It's exam season now, so at this point, I live and breathe sushi because it's so darn quick and easy. I recently went here four days in a row and had absolutely no regrets. I am still an avid California Rolls girl and will nearly always stock up on two boxes here. If I don't have any other food with me, I'll add in a Salmon Bowl just for good measure. (Gotta make those long hours of studying pass somehow...) Now, I've reviewed the California Roll ($3.45) before and have commented on the consistency in presentation. This is still a recurring issue as I have noticed that they are sometimes haphazardly made, with the filling disproportionate among the rolls, the rolls falling apart, and/or some of the rolls squished altogether. This may be due to a mad rush to pump them out, kitchen staff still in training, and/or customers carelessly placing the containers. Thankfully, on a recent visit, they were so beautifully made that I let out an audible gasp. I've tried other rolls at Fujiya before like the Fujiya Roll (yum), Dynamite Roll (yum), Shrimp California Roll (yum), and BC Roll (dry), but for the price of $3.45 for nine large pieces of imitation crab meat and avocado goodness, the California Roll cannot be beat. As with the California Roll though, there have been some issues with inconsistency too; for example, the Fujiya Roll had some pieces missing shrimp, but this was ultimately accounted for with a reduced price. But enough about the rolls. Let's talk the Salmon Bowl ($4.95) because it is glorious. Aside from two occasions where the salmon sashimi tasted a bit off and/or the rice was hard, this rice bowl is something that I daydream about from time to time. There are cubes of seasoned salmon sashimi, shredded tamago, and green onion nestled on top of a bed of sushi rice. Consider yourself lucky if you get there right as freshly made bowls come out because the rice will still be warm and will contrast beautifully with the cold salmon sashimi. While I've had several of the hot bowls (Spicy Korean Pork, Pork Cutlet, Beef, Prawn Tempura) at Fujiya before, they simply pale in comparison to this bowl. For me, it's one that physically cannot be shared with others. A few miscellaneous things: - I've asked the staff before whether it is possible to bring my own container in order to cut down on the plastic used. Unfortunately, due to the risk of cross-contamination, Fujiya won't allow it. - If you're looking to save a few dollars and don't mind what you get, then consider coming ~1 hour before closing as a few items may be marked down. - Fujiya no longer provides outdoor seating due to limited space. If you walk up Shelbourne though, there are two picnic areas at the grassy area near McDonald's that you can dine at. That's all - time to roll me out. read more

Love, love, love this place! Fresh, delicious, lots of choice and great imports. We need something like this in the Gorge-Tillicum area - consider another location? Lots of densifying going on around here, loads of people that like to eat in the area and NO good places, especially take out. Come to us! read more

Huge drop in quality. The tuna roll tasted like canned fish. Great for students on a budget- terrible if you like sushi.

While it's a very small spot and you have to line up it's the best place for cheap sushi that doesn't taste like shit and sells authentic Japanese foods and snacks for decent price. I always get my matcha from there and it's the highest quality in vic I guarantee as an actual Japanese person! With the staff they are so sweet and super helpful, I always have a good experience when going there. I really hope they expand the store!!! read more

Dropped by on a whim and evidently during the dinner rush. This place is crazy, it's the size of a small-shop with a small parking lot on both sides of the shop. The back has a small top side cooler with fresh sushi that gets put out during peak-times. I grabbed a few and they were great quality! We got one veggie heavy and one with raw fish. We picked up a cold tea in the cooler on the way to the cash register and pretty low key. The place also doubles as a small Japanese grocery store, they have snacks, to freezer friendly natto, and more offerings. read more

What a busy place! And no wonder--it's a great little market with all kinds of interesting items, solid sushi and service. I picked up some Philadelphia rolls for lunch on a quick stop and was very satisfied for the price! read more

This is the most inexpensive place for take out in Victoria, sushi or otherwise. They sell some rolls or bento boxes for as low as $2.50 and the quality is high. They have a steady stream of customers coming in so everything is very fresh. This is not a restaurant it's a grocery store/grab-and-go type of place so don't expect to sit down and eat there. My favorite activity on a sunny day is to bring a bag of Fujiya to a park for a sushi picnic; delicious and healthy fun. read more

Fujiya is known for its take out sushi, but there is so much more for such a little place. First off the sushi is the best "grocery store sushi" in Victoria. It is big, tasty and extremely fresh. They also have take out donburi, sashimi and kara-age. The range is quite impressive and very inexpensive. The store also has a pretty big range of frozen fish to make your own sushi/sashimi at home as well as Japanese favourites like sanma, buri and shio-jake. Big candy/senbei section and 6 or 7 difference varieties of rice. Fresh tsukemono too. This place can be busy, but they have three cashiers on at times and I've seen more than a dozen in the back making sushi. Parking can be tough, though I've been known to skooch into the BMO parking lot...my bad. Can ya tell I'm a fan....? read more

Amazing value at this Japanese supermarket if you're looking for a quick bite/meal. Swung by on my way to the airport based on my research and I was glad I did. I got out with a beef rice bowl and a fried chicken bento for ~$6. My friends got the sushi/sashimi and they really liked it especially for the price point. If I lived in Victoria I would go 100% be a regular at this place. read more

Can you say 'food poisoning'?? I used to like this place...and I emphasize 'like'...until I was struck by the worst case of food poisoning I EVER had from eating their sushi...that's right...ill for days...thought I was dying. Even when I did eat there, it was nothing to write home about, trust me...anyone who knows good sushi, knows there are WAY better places to east Sushi in Victoria then Fujiya... They are clearly the reason I will never touch Sushi again. read more

I've had people recommend this place to me and tbh, I don't get it. It's a small supermarket with fresh sushi (and other stuff) in packages. Sushi is falling apart because everyone gets their grubby hands on the packages and just toss it back down if they choose not to buy it. The prices are fine and it didn't taste bad but.... I just.... I don't know. read more

Fujiya is a great place for reasonably priced sushi. It's busy so you don't want to wait too late in the day as the selection gets smaller as the day goes on. read more

Not the best sushi in town, but great value for the price you pay! Everything is really reasonable between $4-$8 for rolls. They have rice dishes as well. My favs: salmon maki roll, yam tempura, and spicy tuna ongiri. Their chicken karaage is decent as are their rice dishes. I haven't been disappointed by anything I've purchased here. Its a good grocery store too if you're looking for random japanese products that you can't find elsewhere. read more

This is our go-to for a easy, healthy and delicious dinner. Love the spicy tuna roll. The parking lot is super tight, be careful! Our favorite thing to do is take it on a picnic, to Mt Tolmie, or to the beach. read more

This is not great sushi by any means, but it's nice to be able to see what you're getting before you buy it. All of the rice bowls are really good though, as well as the sides such as takoyaki. read more

Great portions for the price. Decent sushi. Do not compare this to high end Japanese restaurant sushi. I would categorize the sushi here as decent budget friendly sushi. I especially like their spicy tuna onigiri and their agadeshi tofu. read more

Omg, yum!! There is never a time when I'm not up for Fujiya sushi - fresh ingredients and great prices. I usually go for the Salmon roll and am always pleased. The hot bowls are great too - especially the chicken karage. Friendly staff who seem to enjoy their jobs! Happy to be living so close to here. Only wish there were more locations! read more

This place used to be pretty good for sushi. Probably still better than a lot of places, but that has a lot to do with price I think. Small Japanese grocery store with staff making and packaging sushi in the back. Not a fan of refrigerated sushi as you should know why. Cheap sushi to go, but it seems hardly worth it at times. You have to navigate a tiny shop while battling tons of people lining up in the aisles. For some reason people are trying to get the 'best' item and it gets pretty rude in there. Past couple times I ate sushi I got relatively grossed out. I don't think the ingredients are very fresh anymore. Worth a try, you decide. read more

Really good. Wish they would be a bit more creative and diverse with sushi selection, but very consistent quality and value.

Love this little shop/sushi place. Super fresh sushi ready to go (no sitting area) price is very reasonable and you can get some soup to go with the sushi. This is a great place to stop by and pack some picnic before heading to the beach, Butchard Garden or on the way to the ferry. Love their spicy salmon and the miso soup. Place is always bustling with people in and out but they move quickly at the registers. read more

I absolutely love this place. Always fresh, reasonably priced (even with the prices gaving gone up) and always friendly staff. read more

I love this place! A bit small, but the sushi's incredible. Definitely the best sushi I've ever had.

Amazing place to get fresh, delicious sushi. The line up outside move very quick, the staff are very friendly and careful to follow COVID guidelines. Love it at lunch read more

Go here for cheap and easy takeout sushi. The rice dishes are iffy, as the meat and vegetables get soggy over time with the sauce and condensation. Since it is a grocery store, that's as good as it gets for takeout rice dish. read more

Awesome Japanese supermarket! Sushi & rolls are quite good. Perfect place for cheap and quick sushi.

Great Japanese supermarket! One stop shop for everything Japanese that I need for cooking. I love that they have sushi and other ala carte pre made meals ready to take. The sushi is okay and pretty fresh. read more

Always delicious. If you want the best price for a sushi platter in town, order it here. 80 pieces for 40$ beats even thriftys. We got the platter for our wedding party in August 2015 and it was so good, everyone enjoyed it. I love to grab a quick lunch of gyozas and sushi or a bento box. The prices are the best I've seen and the sushi is consistently high quality. read more

It's my fav Sushi spot! It's cheap, convenient, fast and delicious. There's parking on either side of the store. Ask for their Miso soup just behind the fridge that holds all the sushi. If they don't have something, just ask the people preparing the sushi and they'll make it for you in double quick time. read more

Great place. Great staff. Great food. The best place ive been too for sushi. Only wish they open earlier.

This place is great for ingredients as well as easy to find, good tasting Japanese food. The parking lots are a bloodsport, but it's worth it. read more

Was in the area for a short visit and my cousin brought me here last month. It is a small Japanese grocery store with a take out section at the back with great prices. Gosh -- salmon don - salmon sashimi on a bowl of sushi rice for under C$5! I had the salmon sashimi and it was fresh, and the shrimp maki was also good! We got over $60 worth of assorted take out maki rolls, sashimi, etc enough to feed 7 people and we still had leftovers. It was a great picnic lunch which we took with us up where the picnic benches were before you reached the top at Mt Tolmie. Funny thing was, as we were leaving, a couple arrived and they also had with them takeout from Fujiya! read more

Being from Vancouver my sushi standards are set pretty high. This sushi is ok, I'm not a big fan of pre made and then refrigerated sushi. The rice gets too hard and other ingredients too cold. Fujiya is cheap, so it's nice in a pinch if you're really craving it. The sushi isn't great in Victoria already, this place is pretty average compared to the rest on the island read more

Great for take-out! It's surprisingly hard to get good sushi in town so this place always tides me over until I can get to Vancouver. I also like being able to buy a variety of puffed and fried tofu (which is cannot seem to figure out at home). read more

Finally a business that believes in volume over margin! (sell a lot for less instead of a little for more) This place never disappoints for sushi and their platters are great for parties, office events etc. Top notch customer service, almost like being in Japan, but then most of the staff are Japanese. If you're lucky and they have extra sushi left near closing time it goes on for half price - and it's already cheap! read more

For such a quaint market, the take away selection is quite surprising. A seriously great selection for great prices. I wish this place was local to me. read more

The sushi there is great if you're on the go or busy. The selections are the same everyday most of the time so if you know what you want then it'll be there for you. The prices are a bit higher then desired but by no means is it expensive. The quality is that of a restaurants (if you plated the sushi and disregarded its packaging haha). read more

Plentiful selection of delectable yummy sushi and related Japanese cuisine in that take out / grocery store format, so it's great for the pop-in and out. Nice prices too! Going to make a regular outta me, as I think they have this niche in Victoria sewn up read more

Fujiya is the best spot in town to get delicious, fresh, inexpensive Japanese food! Everyone will find something they'll like in the vast selection of prepared sushi and bentos. The dry goods are not to be overlooked either; you can find lots of imported Japanese food like green tea kit kats that are difficult to find elsewhere. The only reason Fujiya gets 4 stars is because you have to come at just the right time to get the selection you want. I reccomend the sushi bento-if you can snap it up before someone else gets it. read more
