We had an absolutely fantastic experience at Governor's Restaurant & Bakery in Lewiston! From start to finish, the service and atmosphere made our visit memorable--especially for our 3-year-old son. Kristina, our server, was outstanding--super friendly, attentive, and genuinely kind. She went above and beyond by letting our son turn the model train off and back on, which totally made his day (and ours too). Moments like that really stick with you! We also want to give a big shoutout to Patrick, who took the time to show Noah their awesome fish tank and chat with him. It's rare to find staff who are not only professional but also take such a personal interest in creating a great experience for kids. Now onto the food--the beet salad was phenomenal (fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented), and my wife had the chicken stew, which she said was comfort food at its finest. We couldn't resist grabbing a slice of pie since it was on special--let's just say we didn't leave a crumb behind. If you're ever in the Richmond area, we'd love to return the favor! This place never disappoints! Staff is polite and friendly. Food is delicious. You've got to try the "liver and onions" meal. Soooooo good. I want to provide an update, as it's been several years since my initial review. Well, 13 to be exact. Governor's Restaurant and Bakery in Lewiston was a god send during Covid when everything was shutting down.They quickly jumped on the various food delivery options, you can download to your phone, and they became my go-to. I was ordering once or twice a week, in some cases every other week. The food was just as good after taking 10-15 minutes of delivery time. As you can see by several of my photos, you still got hefty portions and I was happy with every single menu item I tried. The meatloaf and mashed potatoes, club sandwich and fries, buffalo tenders, turkey dinner, steak tips, side salad and much more. Just walking in, I can see it's a pretty nice place. Although the table wasn't the cleanest. It was generally quiet, and there weren't many people. As for the food, I got the bacon cheddar burger, and it was actually really good. Although with the fries, there was a bit of beet juice from another side order. had a great time at governors tonight for my first time in Lewiston. My daughter loved the train and the food was exceptional our server was a young blond girl she was super nice and was great at making sure we had everything we needed. The manager a young man was super nice to and checked on us and others around us and was helping ours and other servers when it was busy it's very nice to see the younger generation isn't completely crap. This place is the most toxic place to work at the place is very unsanitary and has water dripping in the kitchen onto your food when being served . The attitude of the wait staff is not very inviting they treat you like a number and just want you to leave some call you a nursing home level customers. At times nobody is wearing gloves when handling your food out back . There are mice running around the dining room and this has been going on for sometime the place is old and disgusting and the manager that rented a place is not a very nice person she hollers and screams at you it waves her hands in front of your face like she's out of control . I think this person should probably retire from Governors and give somebody else a chance that could get some respect from their co-workers the husband is not any better he lies to you and promise you things when hiring and then does just the opposite and when you question it you're in trouble . There has also been theft reported there and nothing is done about it except you get in trouble . This place is definitely backwards definitely backwards . We used to go to the Governor's Restaurant long ago when they were in the Biddeford area (that one closed long ago). Glad to see this one is still around (for 59 years). Casual setting, friendly staff, good food at a good price. Great looking burgers. We got great looking desserts made on site (but took home because we were too full to eat them). I got my usual seafood platter. Allows me to compare different restaurants on same produce (that and I like seafood). This was top-notch with great and huge scallops, tender crispy shrimp, delicious fish (and I am not a fish fan) and tasty fried clams. While not the absolute best seafood platter I rounded up due to the friendly staff and reasonable prices. read more

They're currently renovating the restaurant, so seating was at a premium; that said, it only took about 10 minutes to be seated. Service was about as fast as you can get; salads were delivered within 2 minutes of ordering, and entrees were less than 10. Food arrived hot and was delicious. This place is definitely unassuming but the food we got sure was yummy. I was too stuffed after my meal, but I had my eye on that peanut butter pie as I waited to be seated! We shared some maple chicken poutine-my first time trying poutine ever! My cousin hates cheese so we got it without (which broke my cheese lovin' heart) but it was still super yummy with sweet potato waffle fries, fried chicken pieces & sweet maple sauce on top. I feel like I lucked out with my dinner, it was that good. I got the fried haddock sandwich and haddock chowder combo, omg. The chowder is delicious & rich & creamy, I loved it. A great place to bring the family for homemade food. Old favorites like Liver and Onions, meatloaf, burgers and of course seafood. Home made desserts include Strawberry Shortcake, Gingerbread, Apple Fritter and more. Good size dining room with a moving train chugging along, a fish tank, and friendly service. We got the fried seafood platter with two sides. The kids got the mac and cheese with fries. Everyday has a special. My favorite is the half of pie slices on Sunday. (This applies to take out pie too) The staff, especially the manager Joe, is always welcoming and entertaining. I have tried lots of the tasty desserts and even watched a federal deficit be born. As they say, eat dessert first and they have a huge selection of cakes, pies, cookies and pastries. The eclairs and cream puffs are my favorite. As far as dinner, they have a big selection of comfort food and always serve a complimentary fresh baked roll. Only once did I order something I didn't enjoy and they were quick to make it right. The governor burger is delicious, thick juicy patty topped with cheese bacon and all the toppings. The chicken fingers are tasty and perfect with honey mustard. They also have a weekend breakfast buffet that will leave you feeling as full as violet from willy wonka. After reading the fine reviews, I came with an empty stomach and high expectations. I left a little fuller, but not happy. The service was fine. The dining room is an old-school joint with an O gauge train running around the ceiling. It was fun. The place loses three stars on the food. This is "homemade" food only if home was Joliet prison or your mother was being sought out by the International Court for crimes against humanity. The specialty is the meatloaf, this coarse-ground meat that tastes like it's stew meat or pretty close, so it has a toughness that meatloaf should never have. The gravy had nice flavor, but "smothered" was more dripped, and the meatloaf only had flavor if you had a frontal lobotomy recently and can't tell the difference. The turkey was off the bone but also was tough, overcooked, and lacking in flavor. Desserts were more of a hit. Their pies are good. The strawberry-rhubarb in particular was worthwhile. Service was quite good too. The drag was that the owner/chef seems to think my jaw muscles need a workout. If he sold it as exer-food, then I get it, and I'd pass. Otherwise, buy some better meat, and put some pop back into the food. This place could easily be 5 star if someone cared more about what they put on a plate. read more

We have avoided this restaurant for years. A couple of months ago we tried it on a Sunday as our favorite place is now closed on Sundays. We have missed out as it has been great the four times we have now visited. The gentlemen at the check-in is funny and very nice. Turkey sandwich with all the fixins is definitely not something you could eat very often, but it is excellent. The salads are very fresh with excellent choice of lettuce. I tried the special, pasta, mushrooms and squash in a butter sauce - I was surprised as it was perfect. It had just the correct amount of garlic and the squash was a great surprise. We don't eat desert but looking at the desert cases is enough to gain 15 lbs. I would give it a try if I were you. Support a local establishment that is clean, friendly and surprisingly good. read more

Visited today for the first time . I had noticed their adds about daily specials and breakfast buffets . I saw cars out side but to my surprise there was hardly anyone inside . Maybe due to the time 3:00 pm . After standing there waiting for a hostess someone finally came over and sat me at a table with a menu . After looking the menu over I could not find any beverages . Found them on a separate menu . Coffee was not listed !? And no apps ?! After really looking the menu over I decided to go for the steak tips ! So my food arrives and the server asked if I'd like steak sauce. In my head I'm like what ! Never had steak sauce in a restaurant rant so I'm like this can not be a good sign . So I'm picturing marinated steak tips with onions , melt in your mouth. Nope . It was a mid grade steak cut up pieces , lightly sautéed with onions . No flavor what so ever . But the worst thing was it was that it was not Even hot . The ice cream scoop worth of potatoes were good . The cole slaw was different but good and the roll was good. My server was great ! The decor was interesting . And the floor was dirty. I was unaware of the bakery before I arrived . I did not try any dessert. This place has drastically changed, not only the remodeling (which removed a lot of seating!) but the food has reduced in quality and portions. I went on a Saturday night for a bite and it was really quiet, this is unusual for a Saturday. The service was great, both the host that sat us & server were fantastic. The food was basic. Mostly disappointed with the shrimp Alfredo. It was $19.99 and pretty small. The linguine was over cooked, the shrimp were rubbery, and the shrimp was only partially deveined. I could have been content with one of the above but it lacked any flavor, it wasn't seasoned, there was parsley but other than that it was mostly comprised of unpleasant texture. The cheese sticks were good, and we enjoyed good service but the food left us feeling regret we didn't just grab the ingredients ourselves and cook at home. At least it would have been cheaper. I won't bother with their food again, which is too bad because it used to be a nice treat. read more

I haven't had a full meal at Governor's, but I have sampled from their dessert case. Tops: Eclair. Might not be especially Parisian, but we're not in Paris, are we? Good creamy pudding filling, thick (both in texture in dimensions) chocolate frosting on top. Middling: Gingerbread. They suggested eating it warm, with whipped cream; we went for the warm but skipped the whipped. It was OK, but not especially moist, not especially spiced, and not especially memorable. Certainly a better dessert spread than Gritty's; not without its lackluster pitfalls, though. read more

Governor's Restaurant is a small chain of restaurants in Maine. Governor's is my favorite local restaurant. At Governor's, you get "old fashioned" food. You get plenty of it, and it tastes great. My ex-wife and I have a saying: "You go to Governors for a meal, or dessert.. You'll never be able to eat both." There are so many items on the menu that I love. My all-time favorite is "The Debate." It's designed for those who have a hard time choosing which delicious entree to eat. If I recall correctly, The Debate includes Breaded Mushrooms, Cheese Sticks, Boneless Chicken Wings, and Onion Rings. I always get French Fries instead of the Onion Rings. It's a joke because I can never finish the Fries... It's just too much food. But I don't bother to bring cold fries home. My favorite dessert is Tollhouse Supreme, or something like that. You get a giant warm Tollhouse cookie, and lots of ice cream. I'm drooling, just thinking about it. Governor's is a great casual restaurant. You can go there wearing your "Everyday Clothes," and feel quite comfortable. read more

My son's favorite restaurant of all time. He loves the trains!!! They even had a Thomas the Train track set up. Best fried mushrooms I have ever had. Great rolls with my entree, homemade. They are garbage. I usually go there for the weekly/daily specials. One time we got 2 of the the burger specials to go, they forgot the burger patty on one and we had to go back to get it. Just recently tried the lobster roll and fries special for $10. The roll was stale,the lobster was flavorless as they didn't have any kind of sauce or spices to it, it was just lobster and a hot dogg roll and some limp sorry ass fries that's it, not really worth the money. if you hate food this is the place for you. I resisted this place for so long because I'm not a chocolate peanut butter cake fan. But this place changed my mind. I have never eaten at the place but I have picked up a piece of cake anytime I drove by- which was enough times since its on the way to the freeway entrance.
