Rustic, real, homey and hidden, Gotan is a true find. This petite Argentine eatery is everything you'd hope for on nights when you're looking for a casual dinner out and happen to have a hankering for meat treats. We started with the meat empanadas and paired with the homemade sauces, I gobbled mine up rather speedily and particularly liked their chimichurri-like spread. Next up, I ordered off the menu with the choripan. A popular Argentine sandwich, you'll find sliced chorizo with the chimichurri sauce between the buns of a soft and crunchy baguette. This was absolutely heaven. While I don't know if it's always available, you can certainly try your luck. To wash down the fantastic meal, we ordered a bottle of Argentinean Malbec; a solid choice for a solid meal. My dinner dates ate a grilled chicken breast with salad and a steak. A fun fact about Gotan is the owner, Vivi, meticulously washes each vegetable to ensure cleanliness. They also get their veggies shipped in from California and opt for organic varieties. The dessert that followed was a homemade cheesecake like lemon tart and a homemade alfajor. Decadent, perfectly prepared and quickly devoured. As for the service, Vivi is a supreme owner/hostess. The service was attentive and fast and Vivi personally came by to see how we were enjoying our meal. Gotan is the kind of place that makes you feel like family... with a kitchen churning out the kinds of hearty specialties you'd only hope for at your own family gathering.

I selected this restaurant as a surprise for my novia on Valentine's Day. I was in Mexico City for customer meetings and researched dozens of beautiful restaurants, each a legend in their own way, but something drew me to Gotan. I initially contacted them by e-mail and outlined my plan for the special surprise evening. Nothing can prepare you for the sensations which await you at Gotan. The customized menu created by the owners for our special evening was simply magnificent. Many more capable writers can describe the olfactory and gustatory sensations. I will only say that the combination of appetizers, salad, food, wine, and of course dessert rank in my top 10 dining experiences of all time (including Windows on the World (1999), Aubergine, Gary Denko, Spago and French Laundry).

The service was good, cozy ambiance and food was great. Guillermo, our waiter made the difference. His suggestions we're good and not too much. The meat came a little undercooked but was promptly fixed with no problem.

One of the best places to eat in Mexico City!! The food was amazing!! You gotta try the raviolis and that pie-ish desert (cheesecake pie with a lemony twist). Vivi (the owner along with her husband ) is so nice and she treated us so great! You can't leave Mexico City without eating here!

The host can speak English and was very friendly. Have different kinds of steaks, where are all really good!

Amazing meal. Don't pass it up.

Such a great place! Husband & I came here for our anniversary dinner. Romantic & staff were amazing. Food... DELICIOUS. Top favorite meals. Cooked to perfection. I had salmon w/spaghetti & husband had steak 'like' rib eye & potato a gratin. Don't pass it up!!

Very nice staff. They don't have English menu and the staff explained the food to us. We ordered pasta and salad. They were really good.

The interior is classic BBQ joint and the staff were all incredibly friendly and they give you BIG cups with lots of ice- Classic 'Murica. We had ribs, pulled pork, baked beans, slaw, potato salad & cornbread (oink oink) and everything was perfect! You can add your own sauce to the meat (and it is warm!!) and the food we ordered was in combos, making it a great way to try multiple items from the menu. The food tasted just like I was in the South! I can't stop talking about this place. I am so happy they are in the neighborhood. The price is right, not cheap-cheap but definitely a good value and MILES better than a certain other area barbecue place that has fallen from my good graces (I'm looking at you 'red pig'). Whether you are a gringo that wants a meal that tastes like home or anyone who loves anything and everything barbecue- this is where you need to go.

Trust me, the locals in CDMX are quick on the uptake. Also, I know Alabama, and BBQ is not the claim to fame. So when I saw Papas Alabama on the menu...things that make you go hmmmm. But jonesing for some BBQ we decided to give it a try because it was close and the 2 reviews were good. I went for the Brisket. When we arrived we ordered vino tinto assuming that a full bar restaurant would have at least a house wine. Nope. No wine available in the restaurant. So we ordered a bottle of water and the brisket. Nope. Brisket is only served on Saturday. That's when my suspicions were confirmed. No self respecting bbq restaurant serves brisket one day per week. No worries I told myself trying to remain cordial while having nothing that i came for. So I ordered the turkey breast. Nope. They didn't have any more for the day, week, month, who knows?! What are they serving here? We may never know. My husband cancelled his order of wings and ribs. Maybe the wings and ribs would have been great. But I doubt it. They aren't selling enough BBQ to keep the flames burning. We paid out and ate a close by restaurant that had (most) of what we ordered. This is an honest review. If I had read it before choosing a BBQ restaurant, I would have chosen more wisely.

We ordered the one-kilogram ribeye, which was cooked extremely well and more than enough food to comfortably share among four people. The Caesar salad was prepared tableside and was excellent. For dessert, we had the strawberry flambé, also prepared at the table, which was very well done and a fun finish to the meal. Service was a strong point. Our waiter was attentive, professional, and paced the meal appropriately. We went on a Monday evening, so the restaurant was relatively quiet, which added to the relaxed atmosphere. The only drawback was that they did not have their traditional Argentine roasted beef ribs available that night. If I were to return, I would aim for an earlier seating or a weekend visit to increase the likelihood of getting the ribs, which appear to be one of their signature offerings. Overall, this was a very enjoyable experience. The food was excellent, the service strong, and the setting more quiet, rustic, and subdued compared with places like La Buena Brra. Our teenage kids enjoyed both experiences, despite how different they were. Highly recommended if you are looking for a solid Argentine steakhouse experience while in Mexico City.

The ambiance is nice and authentic looking, and some of the reviews are positive, but definitely avoid this place. I ordered the lechon and it came raw. I gave it back to them and instead of bringing me new food, they took the same piece of meat to the grill to continue cooking it. When they brought back the same piece of meat, it was overcooked and dry. So not only did they serve raw food, but they handled the subsequent situation terribly. They didn't even offer to remove the lechón from the bill, nor to offer a discount. My girlfriend's Milanesa was gross and rubbery. I am from Argentina and can tell you that this place is nothing like Argentine asado.
