Not only do they have great Mexican style seafood, the atmosphere is one of a kind! This place a is converted privet home apartment building. They knocked down walls to adjoin all apartments on each floor, gutted them out, and placed dinning areas throughout. So you walk in and they tell you to go to the 2nd or 3rd floor and pick a table. That table can be in the past living room or past kitchen of an apartment. So cool! The whole ground floor is the kitchen and prep area. The front entrance is thru a open door between two taco stands, the door leads you into the past patio/common area of the apartments. There is no signs in the entrance, just flag an employee down in the patio area and they'll direct you to an open floor. All seafood dishes come with their famous paella, which is one of the best I've tasted. I had the best Octopus cocktail of my live here. The octopus was chunky and tender! I will visit this place every time I come to Mexico City!! They speak English and accept credit cards. read more

During my 4 day stay in CDMX, I've been here twice. Such a neighborhood gem. I once saw local cops take togo when I passed by so I was curious. I got some braised pork dish for $70 peso. It was delish too. The pork dish tasted somewhat like kimchi soup with pork in it. (It was in a pot on the front row, second one from the left) On the way out, I saw paella and that looked amazing so had to be back to try next day.. It was not bad for $200ish pesos. It is nothing fancy but I loved it. If you are adventurous and want to try what locals eat, this is the place. read more

Followed yelp reviews for this back alley gem. I happened to visit on a slow Thursday when they close at 6:30 so there were only 1 couple by the time I'd had settled and had the whole restaurant staff helping me select my dinner. I opted for the diablo shrimp con paella. The rice was lukewarm but the giant shrimp were amazingly flavorful sautéed in scallions, garlic herbs and spices. I'd missed rice so much that I pretty much breathed it all in. There was so many shrimps that I had sadly left about half because I was solo and could not tote it with me. Another first- jarocha: peeled shrimp in cold beer with salted rim. Delish actually. Yet I was only able to eat a few perfectly chilled shrimp and sip a bit of the giant beer margarita I was served. The busy Avenida Chapultepec is full of restaurants, taco stands and torta carts. Which to choose? I was craving seafood, so I headed to El Rey. First, it was a little hard to find. It's a narrow restaurant and there are two entrances. One is a narrow path through the middle of the kitchen which extends to the sidewalk. It's often blocked by employees, food, or both. Just west of that is a narrow, bright yellow walkway that leads into a courtyard, where an entrance directly to the dining room is on the left a few meters inside. Once you find El Rey, grab a seat, ideally in the ground floor near the kitchen. You'll get more of a breeze here, faster service, and get to see what everyone else is eating as it is carried to the tables. We had fresh juices and empanadas to start. The empanadas are light, fresh, and delicious. Shrimp is my favorite. The paella Valencia is massive, and the caldo de jaiba (crab soup) is a large bowl loaded full of crab meat. The camerones a la diablo with large shrimp was a delight. Whatever you get, be prepared to make a mess and not notice because you're enjoying the food so much. Be prepared for a siesta after you're done too. The staff was very friendly and patient as I used my best broken Spanish. They were attentive even during a lunch rush visit. This place is a hidden gem, it is too good to be true, the food is DELICIOUS, big portions, affordable prices, traditional & delicious drinks, the staff is super friendly and the "aguas frescas" are natural, almost made them when you order them, and not overly sweetened. I am vegetarian but if you ask, they can cook you quesadillas (handmade tortillas!) with mushrooms and avocado (I think the also have enchiladas), and of course, something very important in Mexican food: salsas, they are tasty. My friend had shrimp quesadilla and "filete a la diabla" which comes with a tasty paella, he is still dreaming about the food. Highly recommended. ------------- ¡Este lugar es una gema escondida! BE AWARE if you are a foreigner! They will use "bait and switch" technique. I'm so sad since the older lady that served us was so friendly and caring until I called her out. What happened was... When we first ordered she gave us a menu with prices that are different than the prices on our bill. When I called her out she was like.. oh that was supposed to be an old menu. I'm like ok but why did you give it to me in the first place. Our menu had prices with a covered sticker on it that I found was odd so I observed a local couple next to us when they were seated they weren't given a menu with a sticker price like ours, that was what made me want to double check my bill. I would certainly not return, they had way too much cheese and rice on their seafood anyway. I was originally going to support them since the service was good, until I found out I was taken advantage of for being a foreigner. What a sad day. The reviews were not wrong! I can usually tell if a place will be good by looking at pictures of their food. I had a mad craving for pulpo and seafood so decided to come check this place out. It's a little restaurant on the second floor of this building that looks like a grungy apartment complex and it's a little confusing at first cuz there are food vendors at the entrance to the building. Make sure you ask for the restaurant's name! Ok. The food I'm not exaggerating when I say be prepared for a straight orgasm. I think I had like 3. So this place is famous for their paella Valenciana. Don't expect the mushy risotto kind of paella you may have had at other places. This is a little different, the rice is perfectly flavored and super umami, not soggy at all, which I like. I ordered the seafood paella with grilled chili octopus and shrimp on the side. The seafood was cooked to perfection and deliciously greasy like real food is supposed to be. Trust, it's a good kind of grease . I also ordered a tostada de pulpo and caldo de Jaiba (soup) the soup was LOADED with chunks of crab meat and the tostada was heaped high with fresh . Perfect mouth-feel when biting into it. Like I said, 3 orgasms! The lil old man who waited on us Sr. Carlos was super sweet and attentive and when I told him it was one of the top 5 meals I've ever had in my life, he was sure to tell the chef or boss who sent us home with a massive box of the paella for free! We were a little concerned when we arrived and found big open vats of steaming meat sitting outside of the establishment, but we decided to trust Yelp reviews and weren't disappointed. The portions were so generous, all three entrees we ordered could have easily fed two. Pina Rellenos de Marisco was a delicious blend of seafood topped with melted cheese and served in a half pineapple. Paella was an enormous serving of giant shrimp, mussels, crab legs, and much more on a bed of rice. Our server was incredibly attentive and treated us to a gratis dessert with crema and fresh strawberries and a wafer cookie, which was also delicious. This meal was our big splurge during our visit to Mexico City, and while we have yet to be disappointed by a meal, this place was worth the extra effort to find. read more

Part of the fun of going to El Rey del Marisco is walking through the small entrance to see it expand into quite a large (and slightly confusing complex of rooms). It has some of the largest portions of seafood I've found in Mexico City. You could actually share a plate with someone else and both eat well. It also tends to have a north Mexican cooking style (lots of cheese on the fish or shrimp). Thumbs up! read more

This place is phenomenal, tourists don't be afraid to take a trek to get there. We stayed at the four seasons so had to walk half a mile through the hipster part of town and then it got super local and homey. No regrets! There were tons of popular busy places nearby but saw the reviews here were too good to turn down, we got the fried red fish and pineapple mix of seafood. Everything comes with paella. Been travelling all over all year. 15 countries so far, lots of expensive hotels and restaurants. This is my best meal no doubt. Fantastic food, feels really local and great service. Crab soup, chilli Prawns, house salad and 2 beers for less than $25. 10m from entrance to Seville metro stop. Difficult to enter from front as lots of locals queuing for food from massive take home skillets. Do not miss out! read more
