This is a packed, bustling place for dinner, even with its large dining room and sidewalk seating. Make reservations! Then, allow the friendly staff to bring as many items from the menu as you can handle. Come with a group so you can share. An absolute must is the whole fish done à la Contramar, one side of the split fish coated in a punchy parsley sauce and the other in a red adobo rub. Served with flour tortillas (which are refillable) and black bean dip, you'll be instructed how to compose perfect bites. Then, choose your own adventure! We also had both the 4 piece each shrimp tostadas and tuna tostadas. Radically different so getting both doesn't duplicate. The pasta (spaghettini) with clams was buttery and garlicky and the pasta was surprisingly not overcooked. Biggest surprise was the grilled soft shell crabs (with corn tortillas). They came pre cut then reassembled so it was easy to pick them up and pop them in your mouth. The grill flavor was fantastic and we were all impressed. We finished with a slice of coconut cake which was like a caramel coated macaroon. Perfect! Large wine list by the glass and bottle, many cocktails, sangria and beer to choose from. The Contramar pescado a la talla was my favorite dish. It was flavorful and fresh. The aguachile verde was also a good choice. I liked the acidity from the lime and the flavor of the raw onions, which brightened up the dish. On the other hand, the Contramar ceviche was decent, and I wouldn't order it again. The restaurant is a popular tourist destination, and the pricing does not fully align with the overall quality of the food, so it feels pricey for what you get. We were not sure we'd be able to get in without a reservation but we thankfully did. What an absolutely fantastic dining experience...the best on our trip. The service was hands down one of the best we've ever had. I think we counted 3 or 4 servers tending to our table several times and at least 1 person always monitoring our table. We only had to wait 20 minutes for a table. This place is busy with people from everywhere. The ambience is fine dining feel but casual attire is acceptable. Very easy to engage with everyone at table as noise level is surprisingly not too loud given the amount of patrons. We had a variety of dishes and all of them were delicious...but the fish tacos stole the show. The best fish tacos we've ever had...period. The shrimp tacos and fish plate were very good. Contramar is a seafood restaurant located in the Roma Norte neighborhood of Mexico City. It opened in 1998 and has a lively atmosphere although it was a little dim. Reservations are highly recommended but I was not able to secure one ahead of time. We came right at opening and were fortunately able to get seated for our large group. AGUACHILE VERDE DE CAMARON ($365 MXN) - this was decent and slightly spicy although I preferred the other dishes more. 3.5/5 CEVICHE CONTRAMAR ($365) - the fish was slightly tough but was fresh and refreshing. 4/5 SASHIMI DE ATUN ($435) - this was delicious and not fishy at all. I really liked the jalapeño and cilantro that balanced the fish. 5/5 TOSTADAS DE ATUN ($420) - we had both the shrimp and tuna tostadas but we all preferred the tuna. This was another favorite of ours. 5/5 PESCADO A LA TALLA CONTRAMAR ($810) - this is the iconic red and green fish dish that so many people get. This took about 45 minutes to arrive but was worth it. The fish was soft and melted in my mouth. I liked the red sauce (adobo) more than the green (parsley) but both were good. Beware there are still might be some bones but they were mostly gone. 5/5 For drinks I had the mezcalita ($220) which were really good and not too smoky. I also tried the paloma ($215) which was good as well. It was a great meal and my favorite during our time in Mexico City. We had reservations for our party of 6 at 7pm on a Thursday and thankfully so, because this place was busy. The restaurant is rather lively and energetic, but the dim lighting, white linens, and large windows give it a slightly more elevated experience. Most of the dishes were pretty easy to share for parties of 4+. I would actually recommend coming here with more people to be able to try more. For our party, we ordered: AGUACHILE VERDE DE CAMARON: This was a solid and refreshing bite. It was a hit or miss for my table, but I personally really enjoyed it. The citrus marinade balanced the sweetness of the shrimp. Went down very easily with the tortilla chips that came with it. TOSTADAS (CAMARON, CALLO, ATUN): We ordered all the options of tostadas they had that day and the shrimp was definitely my favorite. Tuna is a close second, but I could've done without the scallop. The scallops were a bit tough, while the other two tostada were silky, bright and very fresh. The tuna was marinaded in a soy sauce blend, while the shrimp was more mayo based -- both very different, but the contrast was quite pleasant and well-executed. PESCADO A LA TALLA: An absolute must at this establishment. This was a whole deboned snapper (beautifully butterflied, might I add) with a red adobo rub on one side and green parsley rub on the other -- incredibly tender and flavorful. My personal favorite was the green parsley rub, because of its fresh and herby flavors. We were provided soft tortillas (blue corn and white), mole, salsa, lime and onions to make tacos with the fish or you could just eat it as is. If there's anything you need to order, it's this. PULPO A LA GALLEGA: A bit disappointing because I found the octopus a bit fishy. Also found it a bit bland considering that it was poached. Maybe I just prefer en la brasa more, but at least the texture of the pulpo was pleasant. TARTA DE HIGOS: Do not sleep on the desserts here! Our friend raved about the fig tart and we fought hard to get the last one of the night, which just shows how popular this item is. The fig tart was fresh, adequately sweet and paired so well with the buttery crust. The strawberry meringue is allegedly very good too, but we held off since we were stuffed from this meal. Phenomenal experience at Contramar. Everything was to our liking. Took a chance on walking in without an appointment and we're lucky enough to get seated in 2 minutes. Had to try all the suggested samples. All seafood options were delectable. The adobe white fish was one of the best things we had all week. Simple put, if you come here you have to get the fish two ways. Delicate, flakey, and flavorful. Incredible service. This place is YU-MMY! I went with a group of seafood lovers and we were all very happy. Portions are perfect for sharing, lovely plating, and some flavors we've never tried before that surprised us! Not going to lie, we were very skeptical of how Contramar would be considering all the hype and were so glad to be proved wrong. We were seated appropriately for our reservation time and our waiter was very polite and not pushy. The Tuna Tostada is as advertised! While the slice of tuna maybe super thin, it is packed with flavor and the dried garlic strains are a very nice touch. We also got the crudo was pretty good. The Aguachile however was quite average. The Contramar fish was very tasty and made a nice entree to share with the table. The dessert table side presentation was awesome and the flan was delicious. All in all, We had a wonderful early dinner while sitting outside and enjoying a nice Mexican wine to pair with all the food. This place is worth all the hype! I didn't know what to expect. We went for an early lunch and decided to try a few dishes. It's a beautiful restaurant. First, the sopes are very good. Teeny tiny but tastes delicious. They were very simple with black beans, sour cream, queso fresco, and lettuce. I recommend adding the green and red salsa! Second, the fish pastor taco is probably the best pastor taco I have had ever had. You forget it's fish and I was so shocked how good it was. Third, the tuna tostada was AMAZING. The tuna is so fresh. Avocado and some fried onions. I added some lime and salsa. It's so delicious. Fourth, the Contramar fish was perfectly cooked with a green and red salsa. The red salsa was my favorite. It was served with refried beans and corn tortillas. I made some tacos with the fish and the side of beans. Delicious! The food was great, we got the famous girlled fish and tuna tostadas. The grilled fish has 2 different rubs (half adobo and half green sauce), which were flaky, and tasted great. My favorite was the tostadas, which had the perfect amount of meat and sauce and were fantastic with a squeeze of lemon. The service was surprisingly fast on a Sunday evening. The setting was great as well; it was definitely a high-end spot. As a warning, this is a pricy spot, and not necessarily worth the price. I am sure that with a little more research, other spots in CMX have better fish and are more affordable. As an example, they charged 8 USD for a bottle of water and the total bill came out to ~$95, which I was surprised by, and I would not be going again. Contramar by Chef Gabriela Camara focuses on fresh seafood, and I was a big fan after my first visit here years ago. Since then, however, the restaurant has become more touristy, and the dining experience wasn't as impressive as before. The iconic dishes were all still on the menu--the Tuna Tostada was made of thin slices of raw tuna in a soy marinade, paired with chipotle mayo, crispy leeks, and avocado, and was both delicate yet flavorful. The Ceviche Contramar was a subtle combination of chopped raw white fish in leche de tigre; but I was a bigger fan of the Aguachile Verde, made of raw shrimps in an acidic green salsa. The highlight dish was, of course, the Pescado à la Talla, a whole deboned and butterflied snapper flavored with red adobo rub on one side and a green parsley rub on the other. The flavorful fish was perfect for making tacos in their fresh, chewy corn tortillas, paired along with mashed black beans, avocado salsa, pickled onions, and lime. And after we finished our meal, the waiter brought out an entire tray of enticing desserts--how could we refuse? We got the Fig Tart, made with sliced figs on a sour cream cheese base and an almond crust! On the day we arrived, 12/28, with a huge crowd outside, we said "let's just put our name on the list & see what happens" The 45 minute wait turned out to be less than 10 minutes and we had a lovely table for 2 right at the window/door. I came back to Contramar on my recent trip to Mexico City with my friends who were first-timers! Contramar is such a big name in the CDMX culinary scene so I had to take them here. We walked-in without a reservation about 30 min before their closing time online and were seated promptly. To share we ordered a bottle of local white wine, tuna tostadas, grilled octopus appetizer, and of course the stunning grilled red snapper with adobo and parsley rubs. My favorite had to the fish which was cooked perfectly so that the meat came off the bone so easily and the smoky adobo and fresh parsley rubs were so flavorful and great wrapped in tortillas with black bean sauce as a base. The tuna tostada this time around really wowed me with the flavor. The fried tostada was nicely fried and topped with the tuna, crispy leeks and avocado, the flavor was great and the bites of tuna tostada packed so much flavor. The octopus and potato appetizer was yummy as well and satisfied our craving for pulpo without having to order the entree. The only complaint I have is that we felt very rushed by our server through the meal. He kept taking away plates even before we had completely finished them and tried to take away the fish even when there was half left. This made us fairly uncomfortable and he was pushy with the dessert as well (we had to say we were full multiple times before he took away the dessert options). I understand they were closing up but there were several tables around us still eating and drinking and we felt like we were singled out a bit. We came here after visiting another spot the day before. That we loved and wanted to keep trying different seafood places around the city. We made a reservation and showed up to find the place packed. We were seated, but it was pretty tight. We asked for water, which wasn't free--that's when we started realizing how expensive things were. We couldn't find shrimp ceviche on the menu, so the waiter recommended another dish, which we ordered. It was $20 and... eh, it was just okay. We weren't really feeling the ambiance, the crowd, or the prices. Since we didn't enjoy the appetizer, we decided to close out and head somewhere else. If you love seafood I highly recommend Contramar. This is a popular restaurant amongst tourists and locals and for good reason. The quality of seafood is incredible and there's plenty of options for everyone. I recommend making a reservation as it can be busy but during the day I came, there were plenty of walk-ins as well. To start, I got the lime mezcal margarita. Mexico is known for mezcal so I had to get one. The drink was perfect. Nicely balanced with tartness from the lime and the smoky flavor from the mezcal. For food I ordered a few things. I got the tuna tostadas which were very good. Pair it with some habanero and lime and you are set. I ordered the special of the day which was snail Aguachile. Absolutely delicious and perfect for those who like snails. Ordered two tacos: octopus and shrimp as well as the king fish al pastor. Both were amazing. Finished off my meal with the mango meringue. Everything here is delicious, you can't go wrong with anything. The customer service was top notch as well. Probably some of the best I've had in Mexico City thus far (apart from Michelin starred restaurants). I'm not sure what I can say about this restaurant that hasn't already been said by more famous people than me. I'm looking at you, Eva Longoria. Chef Gabriela Cámara has created a fun, buzzy atmosphere that offers amazing food and attentive service. Unfortunately, I have recently developed an allergy to shrimp and possibly all shellfish, so this made ordering somewhat scary for me in a restaurant that specializes in seafood. The Mr. and I relied on our server to help us navigate the menu safely. We ordered the tuna tostados, a watercress and napales salad, the Ceviche Contramar, and the famous red and green fish. Everything was delicious. We didn't really have room for dessert, but once we saw the dessert tray, we couldn't resist ordering the fig tart and the apple tart with vanilla ice cream. Both were really good, but that apple tart was the best I have ever had. This was an incredible meal and experience from start to finish! One of the most expensive and simultaneously the worst dining experience I had in CDMX. We had a large group (19 ppl) so we reached out directly to Contramar MONTHS in advance for a reservation. They said they could accommodate us with a 130 USD/person prefix menu (total ~2500 USD) which we prepaid before even landing in CDMX. The price included a mandatory 20% gratuity. This menu was MUCH more expensive than ordering a la carte and came with 2 tostadas, 1 taco per person + shared plates for aguachile, ceviche, grilled fish, and dessert. We were OK with paying because we were told that additional plates from our prefix menu would be free of charge (we did not plan on abusing this offer). We then bought about 600 USD of additional drinks/alch. When we showed up, the manager told us the opposite of what corporate told us - we had to pay for additional servings, which is insane because 130 USD was so much more expensive than us just paying a la carte. They also split our group up even though there was room to keep us all together. Service was EXTREMELY slow, they kept giving us less tortillas than the number of people at the table (ex: gave us 8 tortillas for a table of 10....). We had to hunt the servers down to ask for more. After a 30 minute fight with the restaurant manager, he called corporate and we were right - the 130 USD included additional servings free of charge. Instead of apologizing, the manager said "I'll let it slide this time" which was passive aggressive. They then proceeded to give us half-assed additional portions (less tortillas than # of ppl for the 2ND TIME, extremely small portions, etc). Then, when we asked for the itemized receipt, the restaurant took FOREVER to give us it. Then they asked for MORE TIP for that shitty ass service, in addition to the 20% gratuity we already paid. Safe to say I am never coming back here and recommend everyone else to NOT come here. There's so many other restaurants in CDMX that's more worth your money. Their grilled fish with 2 different house rubs (half red adobo, half parsley rub) was one of the most amazing dishes my girlfriend and I had during our 1 week vacation. It was definitely their restaurant's signature dish. The tostado de atun (tuna) was a solid second place compared to the grilled fish. We went with the uni add on and that did not disappoint. As much as we wanted more, we had to hold back in order to make room to try all the other gems on the menu. Lastly, we ordered the fig tart. That was one of the best desserts we've ever tried. This small slice of cake was the pinnacle of a comfort dessert. Each bite was more enjoyable than the last. This one is highly recommended to conclude your night. Service was top notch too. We had no problems paying the premium for this restaurant. As a small reminder, you can always go to Entremar if Contramar is all booked out. Both restaurants share the same menu since it is owned by the same person. Entremar is less well known, less lively, located in Polanco, but is easier to score a reservation. read more

I had trouble booking an interview online, but saw some suggestions that if you email them directly they are typically able to accomodate, which is exactly what I did and was very easy. We arrived a bit early to check out the area and could clearly see how busy and popular it was. We also had a chance to check out their store next door that had lots of fun cooking goods from seasonings, oils, Mezcal as well as some other fun trinket stuff and branded sweatshirts, hats, etc. We were seated promptly, and when I say this place is packed, IT IS PACKED. Not one table is empty from the bar, to outdoor patio area, oddly enough It doesn't feel too overwhelming and is still comfortable. After a few days of nonstop eating and lots of fatty and heavy items, we were looking for a seafood forward and lighter meal, which is exactly what Contramar offers, fabulous seafood. I wish we had room for more, but we got the tuna tostadas, the tuna hamachi and the ceviche. All of them were fabulous, I think the tuna tostadas were our favorite, but it was all delicious and the also leave chips, a fresh green salsa and some other accoutrements on the table. We also had a couple cocktails, including a mezcal cocktail, espresso cocktail and their carajillo. We ended the evening with their fig tarte, which paired perfectly with the carajillo, sort of like an espresso martini, but with espresso and a Mexican liquor. The tarte was light, just sweet enough and a great ending to our meal. The service was top tier, they definitely have a team system going on, but everyone was so friendly. Though the prices are very reasonable, this was one of our more expensive meals while visiting CDMX. Roughly $125 after tip for our three shared plates, three cocktails and dessert. This place is popping - even as a solo traveler during lunch, I had to wait 60+ mins when I thought I could sneak into the bar! The staff is very attentive, and kind, but also didn't understand that I couldn't order much more than I did as I didn't have anyone to share with! I'm glad I went with a few dishes instead of getting their famous green/red fish, so I could try the Augachile and tostada. I really liked the green Augachile and realized that's my fav flavor - and kept getting it all the week. I was disappointed with the tostada as I didn't love the seasoning on the scallops. The interior is super cute with a nice nautical theme. Though I enjoyed my lunch here, there were other great places I went to with no waits that were just as good. I wouldn't say Contramar was worth the hype but still a lovely meal. read more

Get the tuna tostadas and the fig tart and call it a day. We were blown away by the tuna tostadas! Thinly sliced instead of cubed, this was very high quality tuna. No stringiness at all! Paired with the crispy tortilla, creamy chipotle mayo and fried leeks, I could eat these all day. We could have done without the uni and kampachi ceviche (fishy and meh). Also ordered the pescado a la talla that everyone seems to order. It comes with two sauces: red adobo and parsley. Beautiful presentation, not fishy and quite meaty. We learned it was grouper. First few bites were tasty but we quickly grew bored of it. Came with sides of beans and tortillas. This is definitely a touristy restaurant. Every table I overheard was speaking English. 3.5/5 Unfortunately our dinner was more meh dishes than wow. Maybe this is more of a daytime spot not dinner? Our res was at 7pm and they were out of any clams and fig tart... The memorable one- Winner goes to Tuna Toastada, it was simple but oh wow so good! The okayed dishes- Snail Aguachile - it was interesting, the snail was white color which was unexpected. Stir Fry Softshell Crab - it was good and safely executed but wasn't wowed. The offs- Signature Fish - it came lukewarm, also didn't feel like the sauce blends well with the dish.
