Chicken Madras, Butter Chicken, Garlic Naan
Mary M.

Always on the hunt for delicious Indian food and oh man does Gorkha Kitchen deliver. Delicious chicken madras and butter chicken. Garlic naan is to die for. As you can see, we couldn't wait to dive in before snapping a pic. This food smells just as delicious as it tastes. Delivery made for a delicious meal at home

I live in a small foodie town so I enjoy it when I get to a big foodie city. I am visiting my daughter in Chicago and the first day here she recommended Gorkha Kitchen for lunch. There are so many small neighborhood restaurants here but she promised me this is one of the best (it's in Lakeview). The vibe was laid back with the owners being very welcoming. I ordered the Chicken Madras and she ordered the Lamb Korma and needed it gluten free, which isn't always easy to navigate. Surprisingly, they were on top of it all and answered all her questions with ease. The real surprise was the food! My Madras was superb, a perfect mix of spicy and savory. The homemade naan was fantastic, light and buttery. She said her Korma was great....as always! The servings were a healthy size so I continued my feast a few hours later in her condo. The menu has something for everyone and anyone who needs gluten free options needs to go here. This was my first but definitely not my last time visiting them. Thank you Gorkha Kitchen!

Great little hole in the wall with a sampler option to choose 2 different curries. It was my partner's first time trying Indian food and both of us enjoyed it. The interior of the restaurant is very clean and cozy, and the staff is very kind and accommodating. I was very happy with the entire experience and will definitely be coming back again. Next time, I'm going to try their Momos. *safe for nut allergies*

Omg I can't believe I hadn't reviewed this place yet!!!! Part of me wants to keep this place a secret bc it's so good... but they definitely deserve to be PRAISED. Where to begin?! We lived right around the corner from this place for almost a year before we finally ordered take out one night and, man... I just wish I'd done it sooner!! Literally would probably be my biggest regret on my deathbed. (I've lived a pretty fortunate/sheltered life, I know.) Anyway, they specialize in Nepalese/Indian cuisine and 99% of my orders have been AMAZING. Just... AMAZING. (They don't do vindaloos well, but maybe bc it's a southern Indian dish?) One of their specialties is butter chicken and honestly I have never had a better butter chicken in America. It is creamy, rich, and the garam masala and cumin are so well balanced and beautifully so. A lot of places don't get this right and it's sometimes too cumin heavy or there's too much acidity, but not Gorkha's. Their butter chicken's acid and fats are perfect. We also love their Lamb Biriyani and Lamb Saag!! My bf used to LOVE ordering Palak Paneer at Indian restaurants but it didn't love him back, to put it mildly. (And for good reasons, since the combination of spinach and cheese is terrible for digestion.) Their Lamb Saag is now his go-to dish. It packs a little baby heat which only makes you eat more lol. Their Tandoori Chicken is a hit or miss. Sometimes it's pretty dry, but I've also had it when it was juicy and tender; dry or not, it's still seasoned and charred to perfection. We will never go to another Indian restaurant in Chicago for as long as Gorkha exists. Although, I may need to find a restaurant with bomb Lamb Vindaloo...

This has to be one of the top most flavorful and best chicken to rice ratio of Chicken Biryani in the City of Chicago that I have had so far! I ordered delivery and all items were generous in portion-size, arrived at appropriate temperature levels and were carefully packaged. Delivery was super fast. Would order again in a heartbeat!

Had takeout delivered by Doordash. Very good Butter Chicken and Korma. I would get vegetable Korma rather than Lamb Korma next time, as the lamb wasn't noteworthy. A fried version of Chicken Momas was unusual and also good.

Well, we did it. Another successful year walking in the Pride Parade. We had a blast! But it ended and we were starving. Luckily this place was literally right at the end of the parade. They didn't even flinch when the 4 of us walked in in rainbows and sweat and sat us with LOTS of water (thank you). We had vegetable samosas, chicken pakora, paneer pakora, chicken vindaloo, shrimp biryani, fish curry, chicken saag, poori and tandoori naan. I mean, we were hungry. Everything was super yum. Service was amazing. My only regret was not trying some of the varieties of momo. Another table got some and they looked delicious. Would definitely recommend!

Butter Chicken and Chicken Chilli Masala lunch special

I have walked past this little hole in wall about 30 times this week alone and I'm so psyched I finally stopped in I love a good deal...so I love a lunch special. 13.99 for two curries (veggie AND/OR chicken), naan, rice, pakora, and a drink!!!! My friend and I tried the butter chicken (sorry to be basic, but this was yummy), tikka masala (okay a step less basic, very good but chicken was cube cut in a slightly strange way), chicken saag (best saag I've ever had, chicken was juicy and fell apart in the best ways), and a chicken chilly masala (packed a wonderful spicy punch!!). The naan was delicious, warm, and flavorful despite not being the special garlic or cheese naan. The menu had quite the array of great options so I'll def be back to get momo and try other things, especially from the Nepalese section. Food took a bit despite being pretty empty but I just take this to mean it was fresh.

Disclaimer, I'm an East Asian and I didn't grow up eating Indian or Nepali food so take my comments with a grain of salt. Lamb curry My friend and I enjoyed it. I bit into some star anise in the dish, and I wished they gave the star anise more time to incorporate into the curry (sauteing longer and toasting it before), as the star anise flavor wasn't really there. I had to bite into the star anise with the sauce to learn about the flavor profile. Eggplant curry I wasn't a big fan of the dish, as it felt a little astringent and bitter at times. I wasn't sure what it was going for, and I wished it utilized more of that umami flavor from the eggplant to elevate the curry. The curry felt a little overpowering. Fish curry As a seafood lover, this was one of the most special curries I have had. The fish was delicate and soft, which was paired well with the sauce. I would get this again. Chicken Biryani We increased the spice for this dish. The portions were huge and we liked it as a base to the other curries and something to eat with the naan. It was not bad. Mutton Momo (Soup) As a mutton/lamb lover, the momos were flavorful and hearty. They were paired with a spicy tomato soup, which felt different but familiar. We loved it. Mutton Momo (Chillied) The momo was sauted and fried at the bottom. It was paired with some bell peppers. This is the kind of dish where you wouldn't be able to stop eating. Loved it. Garlic Naan Hot, thin, crispy. Even though we wished the garlic was more pungent, the texture was great. Gulab Jamun (Fried Ball Dessert) It was our favorite. The syrup was gingery and had a subtle hint of saffron, and it blended well with the fried balls. This hit home. Overall, the food was decent. We will definitely be back for the momo and to try the different curries and biryani.

We kept it simple with water for drinks and ordered the chili chicken as an appetizer. It leaned more tomatoey than spicy, with a mild heat level, but still really tasty. For mains, we got the Chicken Madras and Khasi ko maasu (Nepali goat curry), both served with white basmati rice. We also ordered the bread basket, which came with naan, garlic naan, and onion naan. Everything paired really well together, super satisfying with both the rice and naan. The server asked about our preferred spice level for the goat curry, and we chose regular. It actually wasn't spicy at all, which worked perfectly for us. Our total came out to around $80, which felt like a great deal considering how much food we had left over, we packed everything up and basically got dinner out of it too. Highly recommend this spot if you're looking for something flavorful but still relaxed. Would definitely come back!

It was slightly spicy and complimented them so well. I got full off the 2 samosas and was unable to eat my entree, veggie vindaloo with a side of naan. But, I nibbled it and the flavor was amazing. I boxed it up for lunch tomorrow. They have a robust vegetarian menu and will make some dishes vegan upon request. I'm a fan.

I went back today and was honestly so upset because my go-to dish, the paneer makhini, was nothing like it used to be. It literally just tasted like straight cream. I even asked them to remake it because I thought something was wrong, but it came out the same way. I ended up just eating the other food we ordered, but it was such a disappointment because this has always been the dish I look forward to. I even showed them old photos from past visits compared to today and it was clearly different. The chef tried it and said it was the same, which shocked me because it really wasn't. I get that places can have off days, but this was really discouraging. As much as I've loved this restaurant, I don't know if I'll be back if the quality has dropped this much.

Our order included: cocktail samosas, palak paneer, baigan bharta, and the chicken tikka masala. The meal comes with three naan and rice on the side, as well as a dessert. We went with the gulab jamun. I also wanted an order of soup momos, so we added that onto our already robust order as well. (They didn't disappoint, so delicious.) Everything was well-balanced and spiced. I especially love that we were able to split the portions across multiple meals given how generous the naan was. The most beloved item was definitely the momos in the spicy/sour soup, followed by the buttery naan dipped in chicken tikka masala. I also really enjoyed the baigan bharta. So very enjoyed this meal, and I can't wait to try some of the other menu items that other diners have recommended.
