Gordy's Bakery was a sweet treat that we found via Yelp while on vacation in September of 2019....yes, before Covid. Luckily we were still traveling just before the world closed. We loved the staff; they greeted us with a glorious morning smile. It smelled delicious when you walked in. Their coffee and pastries were outstanding. The place was adorable. Super inviting. Very clean. I would highly recommend this place. I am surprised I forgot to Yelp this one as we talked about it for days. Actually I ordered a hot tea and my husband ordered a latte. Cute coffee shop with a large variety of bakery and sandwich items to chose from. My sister and I ordered an iced mocha with soy milk, chai latte with oat milk and a coffee cake (they offer to heat up the coffee cake, which made it taste even more delicious)! Although their menu doesn't say which milk alternatives they offer and the extra price you pay for it, they do have soy and oat options. The coffee is on the pricier side (I'd give 4.5 stars if I could), but well worth it if you're looking for something early in the morning and looking for a snack as well. Dear Yelp Community, Where have I been? This venue has been here for years, and I just now find it when searching for a bakery in North County. If you arrive early, you will be rewarded with a full display of their sweet and savory treats (see photographs). I enjoyed a coffee paired with a more healthy option, like a muffin-type (but this venue has its own name for these). A colleague and I stopped in here for some coffee, tea, a bacon scone and a bar. Inside is small but they have ample outdoor seating which is what you want in North County. The tea and coffee were excellent. I had a latte and it was exactly what you want. My colleague got the bacon scone and said that while it was little weak on the bacon taste, it was lighter and fluffier than a scone traditionally which was a positive. Lastly, I got a Monkey Bar which is a dense bar with bananas and chocolate chips and it was truly fantastic. Locally owned and operated right in Encinitas. Go check them out next time you want to go to Starbucks. read more

Meh, I don't know about this place. I do like all the bakery options but here's the deal... Personnel: Front of the house folks: 3.5/5 Back of the house folks: 2/5 -The female owner gets a 1 and the male owner gets a 4. The lady appears to not love her job and always has a scowl on her face. When you try to engage with her she just stares at you and doesn't even say hello. Maybe she's deaf? If so, I apologize for the statement. The guy always seems happy and engages with you. You can tell he appreciates his customers, his goods, and his business. The goods: Cheddar and bacon scone: 2.5/5 -It's dry, it's dry, it's dry. Did I mention it's dry? Snickerdoodle cookie: 3/5 - This is a hit or miss as some days it's a four and other days it's a two. The days it's a two it's very dry and flavorless. The days it's a four it's moist and you can taste the actual cinnamon and sugar in it. Peanut butter cookie: 2/5 - I have tried the peanut butter cookie about a dozen times because it's my favorite type of cookie and I keep thinking it will be better than the last. However, this has been wrong every single time. Once I get my hopes up that it'll taste different, I'm let down once again. It's either dry or semi moist. You can tell that peanut butter is definitely manufactured in a large factory as the it tastes like it came out of a medicine cabinet from a 5 gallon drum. Oatmeal raisin cookie: 4.5/5 -The bakers definitely have this one nailed down to the T. It is a great combination of oats, raisins, cinnamon and a nice moist and chewy cookie. I just wish they could do this to their other cookies. Plonk: 4/5 -Moist, flavorful, dense, and you can taste all the flavors in this. No wonder it's a favorite amongst the locals and many have it on repeat. Will I continue to come here? Ugh, I'm not sure. My husband and I have frequented Gordy's over the years as one of our favorite bakeries in North County. Sadly, ever since Gordy left and management has changed, the quality has drastically diminished. All of our favorite Gordy's staples have either left the menu entirely or don't even come close to what they used to be. We've given this place a chance a few times since ownership changed, with every visit leaving us more and more disappointed. I decided again today to give it another shot and was sad to see a display case full of baked items that did not appear fresh -- my first thought when seeing this was to move on, but I figured I was already there and I should just give it another try. The B Bar that I had loved so much was no longer an option so I ordered an Apple Turnover, a Monkey Bar for my husband and a couple of cookies. The turnover was soggy, dense, a bit sour, and lacking flavor. My husband said his Monkey Bar was flat, doughy, and simply didn't resemble the Monkey Bars he'd always had before. And the cookies were just okay. It's safe to say we will no longer be returning to Gordy's, but wish them the best of luck. read more

Went here on a whim today and was not disappointed. Had a great chat with the barista Daniel. Ordered a simple latte and was surprised at how good it was. I've been trying to sample more coffee across North County, and whoever they source the beans from is amazing. I do have one complaint but, as an aficionado of baked goods as well as a food service worker myself: the price of the pastries. They were super expensive. It was about $40 for the coffee and four baked goods. However, as mentioned, I understand the cost that comes with good, handmade pastries and baked foods. When you come here, you need to be willing to just go for it. The food was amazing and the cost reflects it. I'll definitely stop by again and try more, because who doesn't love the occasional spoil yourself kind of day? read more

Man, these people make a mean traditional English Scone! I went all English on this visit to Gordy's and ordered an Earl Grey Tea and a traditional English Currant Scone, as seen on television apparently. The Earl Grey was what I expected with its distinctive citrus flavor and mild mangold petals flavor. It was dark and full bodied. The scone was terrific. The density was just right: dense enough that it was firm, but moist enough that it was easy to eat and pull apart. The currants were nice as well. They were not to hard, and still provided a bit of a chew. They offered a mild sweetness that went well with the breading of the scone. They liked popped in the mouth as I encountered them in every bite. They offer free WiFi, but you need to ask for the password. They some seating inside and a lot outside. They offer a wide range of baked goods, including a variety of bars, plonks, cookies, small pies, muffins, and short breads. The Brits sure know how to make a scone... read more

I've never really yearned for baked goods, but Gordy's may have just made a believer out of me. Their "Plonks" are what would happen if an oatmeal cookie and a muffin met on Tinder, had a few drinks, and threw caution to the wind. Trust me though, it's a much more beautiful thing than the visual I just gave you. I went with the Big Bang which was like a bran muffin with blueberries only way better than either of those things are solo. Honestly, I can't say I've ever been so satisfied with something that sounds as simple as this. Probably not going to be able to wait till fall to try the pumpkin flavored one. The shop itself it small, but cute with all sorts of cool stuff on the wall. There's not much of a patio to sit at for while, but if you're coming here it's for a to-go plonk, maybe a coffee, and to get on with your day. Cute little bakery in Encinitas with some killer & unique muffins aka plonks! They also offer a variety of other baked goodies like scones, sweet bars and meet pies. The decor of this coffee shop/bakery is a bit peculiar, bright colored walls with some random posters. I wouldn't call it the space inside cozy, there are just a few seats and tables. The most of the seating space is outdoors. At first, i wanted to get a scone but then i laid my eyes on all these healthy style muffins and i forgot all about the scone. Plonks are baked with all kinds of goodies like nuts, berries, oats, bran, honey and taste simply fantastic to the last crumb! It's just ok. I've been here twice now. First time had a chai latte which was ok. Tried the croissant, snickerdoodle and monkey bread and again it was ok, nothing memorable. Today I got an iced latte and it tasted burnt, bitter. I paid over $10 for a latte and cookie, that's similar to what I pay at lofty for an amazing matcha latte and croissant. I felt ripped off for the quality I got here. I don't mind paying $10 or $15 for a latte and treat but do mine when the quality is not worth it which was the case for this place. read more

Good coffee, good pastry's that being said The girl who was works up front this morning was unpleasant and rude. Been there before and never had any negative interactions. This morning it was impressionable enough for me not to return for at least a good while. Encinitas is such a hub for coffee shops I think you really need to have a minimum decent coffee, pasty's and good customer service. I'm sure if you go here you'll be fine as for me I'll gladly go to one of many other locations, this would definitely be a harder choice if I didn't feel like the place was a tad bit on the pricier side which isn't Over the top expensive but i say it does lack a little value. Disgusting place.. cheap coffee, banana bread tastes nothing like banana bread, ordered it warmed up, got it warm on the edges, cold in the middle. They dont even have a trash can in the store, you'd have to to outside to throw ur napkins. My issue really was everything was way too dense for me, the plonk, the muffins, scones and even the coffee cake. It was like the heaviest pastries I've ever had, and I'm assuming they're somewhat healthy but still, my idea of what fresh baked goods are did not align with Gordy's unfortunately. The people working were so nice, but I just didn't care for the products on offer, just too dense for me and crumbly, no structural integrity at all. I went today at 4pm and got a cinnamon roll and chocolate croissant. They were both old and impossible to eat, I had to throw them both away. Such a waste of money and time, very disappointed. These products may have tasted better when they were fresh in the morning, but if they're going to turn stale before you close then you shouldn't be selling them. Business deserves 1 star based on my experience, however I'm giving them 3 stars as I'm sure they're a lovely business when items are fresh in the morning and I don't want to take down their rating. It seems Encinitas has more than one ringer in the bakery category. By simply heading east on Encinitas Blvd from Hwy 1 (aka Pacific Coast Hwy), you pass three that I know of. And Gordy's is the very first you will encounter. Very much worth the stop. Gordy's, stuck in the middle of a strip mall, gives the impression of a good, old fashioned mom and pop business. Little tables are set up outside, plenty of shade, and a water bowl set outside inviting your canine companion for a visit. Inside it is tiny. There is a long list of coffee drinks on the wall. And most importantly, their shelves are stocked with some mighty good looking baked goods. It is the kind of place where you would probably giggle and say, "One of each, please".....and mean it. I zeroed in on the huge and hearty muffins. With quite a variety of choices, all gently sweetened with dates, fruits and spices, then given a chewy but tender texture from oats, bran, and/or other grains, not to mention some have nuts, they are definitely a stomach filler upper. I love something with substance, and these fit right in there. (And a fabulous and tasty way to employ Mother Nature's Roto-Rooter service.) Since their muffin names are cute but mostly non-descriptive (The Plonk, The Durfy, The Big Bang), their website menu can give you details as to their special ingredients if you must know. I personally loved my spiced Pumpkin Muffin (cleverly described as "putting the gourd in gordy") ! For the health minded, there is even one that is a low fat, dairy free, no sugar added version, called the Fruit Bomb. Our meat pies had a generous ground beef filling, although there were more than one filling to choose from. The beef was made savory with a touch of thyme, and rolled into a hand pie using a light, flakey pastry crust. The concept and execution were great, but that filling did not do much for me. I would go back to try the others (Sausage and Vegetarian Sausage). The shortbread was nothing short of amazing. Very delicate and intensely buttery. And gratefully, not so sweet....actually, just right. I loved everything about this place! I am a happy convert. read more
