This is a true hidden gem for San Diego! I just love bakeries, especially a small local business. I bookmarked Gordy's Bakery for their meat pies. I first tried meat pies at Pie Not in Orange County and fell in love. So, when I saw that San Diego has a small bakery with their own version of meat pies, I had to check this it out for myself. I thought there would be a ton of reviews about their meat pies, but read a lot of reviews and tips about their famous plonk muffins. When you enter the bakery, you'll notice the eclectic decor. The walls are painted with vibrant colors and if you look up towards the ceiling, you'll notice Gordy's wall-to-wall collection of bobble heads. Got there on a Sunday afternoon, around 11:30am, since they open only til 1:00pm. Thankfully, we were the only ones in the bakery at that time, so It was easy to ask a ton of questions about their different muffins and other baked goods displayed in the windows. The employee went over each of their plonk muffins and what ingredients were in each. From everything we saw, we decided to order their top two muffins - the plonk muffin and big bang muffin, two meat pies, and a raspberry bar. Plonk Muffin (the original things): First off, these muffins aren't you're traditional looking muffins. They have a more rustic appearance and it's obvious that it's packed with a ton of ingredients. The plonk muffins (all varieties) remind me of fruit cakes because of the abundance of fillings, but tastes amazing! The plonk muffin is filled with bananas, butter, flour, dates, walnuts, water, sugar, eggs, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger - whew!!! The muffin is pretty heavy in weight, but it's definitely not as dense as I thought it was going to be. It was marvelous! Big Bank Muffin (Its bran, so um...yeah): According to the employee, this is the second best selling muffin, but this was my favorite. It's packed with oats, bran, brown sugar, bananas, blueberries, butter, flour, walnuts, sugar, eggs, salt, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger. This muffin was more moist than the plonk and just a tad sweeter. It's probably because my hubby and I just love blueberries too. Meat Pies: This is the reason why I came to this bakery in the first place, but their muffins definitely outshined these pies. The meat pies are made with a flaky crust encapsulating a ground beef filling. Because we ate our meat pies there, the pies were heated up. Overall, I thought they were good but I've definitely had better. If you're looking for amazing meat pies, I highly recommend trying Pie Not in Orange County. Raspberry Bar (R-Bar): This bar was delicious and a favorite among the employees there as well. I really wish there was a bakery like Gordy's closer to south San Diego, but I'm happy there is a bakery like this period. I told my husband that there are probably bakeries in Los Angeles and Orange County that could easily rival Gordy's, but I'm giving Gordy's 5 stars based on bakeries I've tried in San Diego. I just love how they make incredible "plonk" muffins and other yummy pastries. Gordy's has a great selection of different bars, macaroons, cookies, and cap-n crunch treats! Cap-n crunch treats are similar to rice crispy treats but made with cap-n crunch cereal instead. My hubby really wanted to try this but we just couldn't eat any more sugar after finishing what we had already ordered. It was still dark outside - way too early for a night-owl like me to be up, but alas I had an early assignment to complete. So, I rolled out of bed with my eyes barely open and drove my kids down to San Diego. I still have no idea how we made it in one piece, but we did. One of my kids was kind enough to treat me to a nice hot cup of coffee before arriving at our destination. We stopped by Gordy's Bakery, a small mom n' pop shop, as it was along the way. Gordy's is an intimate bakery with a quirky personality. The bold artwork on the walls and exotic pastry names gives the cafe a touch of sass to the fresh baked goods and strong coffee. I ordered a Vanilla Chai Tea Latte and it was just what I needed to stay awake for the remainder of the day. I can certainly imagine this small shop as a popular destination for friends to catch up or for busy individuals like myself to grab and go. The adorable young blond helped me other day and I must say I didn't think she had it in her to make such a PERFECT cappuccino, kudos! She was so friendly and helpful! The pumpkin muffins are my favorite! The plunks and other muffins are great too! Great little unassuming coffee spot. I thought this might be some old school mom and pop spot when I drove past it the first few times, but after popping in for some coffee and baked goods this weekend, I was pleasantly surprised. Its very unique, has music and movie posters all over the walls, some figurines and other interesting decor and a few small tables. The coffee and baked goods were all delicious, fairly well priced and delivered by a pleasant staff. Def worth a try! read more

Today was a real bummer for me, but this kind of happened several times now, so I'm leaving this review. The repeated offense is the scalding coffee that actually burned my finger this time. Last time I got coffee here, I was unable to drink it for about 10 minutes too and I need that coffee in my system when I get it. Today was a little extra bad because I opted for the flavored coffee instead of the regular (was that my mistake? Should I never try flavored coffee as a rule?) and it tasted like coffee flavored vanilla water. Next, I asked for a cafe au lait (which is meant to have steamed milk, ok) and I got it with almond milk (again, this was probably I bad choice on my part, I was feeling adventurous) and here's what I got: coffee flavored vanilla water, with no foam and just a slight feeling of almond milk mixed in. I got two of these drinks because my husband was waiting for me to bring coffee home (he gave me a dirty look after he took a sip) and I paid $8 for these two drinks. I couldn't try them there because they would have caused me third degree burns (a drop landed on my finger when I opened the lids to add sugar and it was brutal), so I figured most of this out at home. They have decent pastries, maybe a bit dense. Should I try again? Maybe I'll go for regular coffee with milk again to see if there is any redemption to be had. It's the closest coffee shop to me and I want to like it. I think I got a good cappuccino there once. read more

Great little shop with lots of fresh pastries and a really cool poster collection. The coffee was perfect as well. The Pasty: The crust was a wonderfully flaky and buttery. The filling inside was just average in flavor but was packed in very generously, making half of it a substantial meal when I paired it with a salad the next day for lunch. The Plonk: It's like a mix between a soft baked granola bar and a muffin. I really loved the banana flavor and nuts but found that there were too many raisins, making it overpoweringly sweet. When I picked out about half the raisins, the taste was more to my liking. Would have liked more nuts, but I liked how they were kept in large pieces. The shop was very well kept, even the bathroom. They have wifi, although not many people stay long. I wish they had a convection toaster as it would warm up the pastries better than the microwave they currently use (cheap investment, if you ask me...). I will definitely be back to try their other goodies..the bars look promising! read more

I've had most of the stuff what's in the case, and seriously everything I've tried so far is amazing!! We happened across Gordy's a few years ago, and every since then, we visit them almost every week. The currant scones are to a must try (best English-style scones around), but other baked goods are also all very fresh and tasty. They have unique muffins (Big Bang is my favorite with bran and blueberries) as well as bars that you could not find elsewhere. They also have a great coffee/drink menu. read more

Had my first "plonk" at the grand opening this week - and have had another one every day for breakfast since! I love oatmeal cookies, and this is like a cross between the best oatmeal cookie you've ever eaten, and a grainy, nutty, nutrient-packed muffin. Yum! Keeps me going far into my day. 5 stars for the plonk muffin alone. I can't tell you exactly whats in that thing, but I can tell you that I would eat one every day if I could. They also have pumpkin spice syrup for your latte, soooo if you're like me and can't get enough of the stuff even when its 85 degrees outside definitely stop by this adorable little bakery! I tried the blapple muffin as well...I wouldn't really recommend it though. It was a blackberry muffin with a whole mess of apples on the inside, and it just didn't live up to the fabulousness that is the plonk. I can't wait to try some of their other goodies tho :) read more

Oh, sweet deliciousness. I went for a run with a friend this morning and she was raving about this place and I was so excited to try it I stopped by on my way home. The worker at the counter was super friendly and helpful. He mentioned something about the owner (?) being a leader in the running community so I allowed myself to think that most things were fairly healthy there (it made me feel better anyway). I ordered a peanut butter bar for my crazy p.b loving husband and a muffin bar for myself. It could have been the plonk bar, but I just went by what looked good and didn't check the names. It was super moist and delicious and absolutely amazing. The p.b bar was fantastic as well. I know I'll be back within the next week. This was my first visit under new ownership....the food is good and they have expanded the menu to add sandwiches which all sound good. Service was very slow and I would not return. Best ever! Trish and Todd stopped in today and had a plonk, an A-Bar (apricot bar) and a veggie sausage in a bun thing. All really really good. The plonk and A bar are as good as it gets! The veggie sausage thing is new for Gordy and I think he has landed on something good. Gordy was in the back baking and Ellen up front. He just opened so still growing his line up of food choices, however stop in here if you are in the area, it is already worth a taste. He has transformed the location with bright colors and open ceiling to create a good feeling and comfortable vibe. Gordy has been making treats for North County for a long time and has a big following. I have a feeling he is going to do really well here. Do you want sweet? Savory? How about both? I've tried one of everything here, and really, there's nothing on their menu or in their display case that isn't super scrumptious. This place is Yummy to the 10th power! And those who go gluten-free here can rejoice as well and share in the glory of Gordy's baked goodies. Every time I've gone to Gordy's they've been closed (i.e. early for Veteran's Day) and of course, when I went this morning I discovered my wallet was missing. I was planning on buying two muffins, the Big Bang (which I had before, courtesy of my friend's sister who works at Gordy's) and the seasonal pumpkin version. I was devastated to find I only had about $1.50 in coins at the bottom of bag, but the lady working behind the counter took two dollars out of the tip jar so that I could buy at least one of the muffins. She was really sweet and it's refreshing to see a small business that not only makes amazing food (the Big Bang has blueberries, bran?, and walnuts in it and is very moist) but really cares for its customers. It will be a regular place for me, I can tell. The date bars were especially tempting, and I've heard their coffee is great too. I have a serious problem with Gordy's. The problem being that I can't NOT come here every morning. No, I'm not kidding. I did say it was serious. Gordy's house organic coffee, beyond deliciousness. Rumor has it that the lattes are equally enjoyable. Gordy's muchies... or more accurately described as "plonks"... oh, where to begin. YUMMM! I am a HUGE fan of the durfey, the og plonk, and let's please not forget the bacon & cheese scone. This my darlings, is not your average scone. I know you don't know me, but please, just trust me on this one and have yourself a try. Wanna hang out for a bit? You can! And for your viewing pleasure, Gordy's got some supah sweet posters covering almost every inch of his walls and somewhere between four and five dozen bobble heads hanging out at the top of the store's perimeters. OK, so I heard about Gordy's Bakery from my brother-in-law who works for movin shoes (where apparently Gordy used to work or something). So we drove all the way up to encinitas to try it. First impression walking in, it looked awesome. There's all these clever names and descriptions for the different items, with bobble-head dolls lined up around the store and a pee-wee herman mobile, so it was cool to see some personality. The woman who served us was also very nice. Between the five in my group, we got almost everything: a chocolate chip peanut butter cookie, a peanut butter cookie, shortbread, an R (raspberry) bar, an A (apricot) bar, a B (chocolate) bar, a plonk, a fruit bomb, and a sausage roll. Everything looked very good in a no-frills way (as somebody has previously said). The food itself was very good, but INCREDIBLY rich. We went pretty early in the day, and I couldn't handle my entire R bar - I could practically taste the butter dripping out of the streudel topping. It was also a little bit on the salty side, but that's being nit-picky, because the overall flavor was good (if not a little bit rich for an early snack). The cookies were AWESOME, and we all tried and absolutely loved the plonk. The shortbread was way too crumbly, and far from the best shortbread I've head. Overall, I would say while this place is not my favorite ever, it's definitely worth repeated visits. If I'm in the area again, I'll definitely stop by. I just wouldn't drive way out of my way for it. read more

I went by to check out Gordy's based on article on Carlsbad paper, and Gordy had helped me out couple times at running shoe store. I have to tell you the food is amazing!!! I'm always one to support someone pursuing their dreams (Way to go Gordy!!), but I'm a lifelong customer because of the great product and friendly vibe. Don't forget to get a coffee for $1!! Its great coffee and they have Stevia sweetener behind the counter if you ask (it's top secret so don't tell anyone). It's easy to find, it's where the Baskin Robbins used to be. read more

I can't sleep at night...all I can do is dream about plonks and dunfeys. These are honestly the best muffins I have ever tasted...and I've tried a ton. This is the best bakery I have ever had the pleasure of visiting. I didn't know the whole back story of Gordy but am so glad he decided to come back...I can see why people could not live w/o these treats. It makes you realize how dumbed down the corporate chain baked goods have gotten when you taste these. There is no comparison. The Lunch Lady bars are a peanut butter treat unlike anything I've had and are now being used as a bribe for my kids' to behave! Plus the krispy treats are made with Cap'n Crunch, a brilliant move I will now be copying at home. More upsides...the prices are good, staff is friendly (although I've only met two of them) and I have fully convinced myself that these muffins must be good for you with all the good stuff in them, right?! Plus their t-shirts are super cool. The downside...the location is a bit hidden and I really hope they do well. I can't imagine life as I know it without these muffins. Really.
