Near empty housewares shelves after they periodically come in and remove stuff for unknown reasons
    Mark R.

The people here are friendlier than many other Goodwills. Like all Goodwill stores, they don't know how to tell women's jeans from men's jeans. Men's pants racks are already way too crowded to have to also look through women's jeans without making pants fall off their cheap, worn-out hangers, but add in women's jeans and it is a serious time waster for men. They need to search on YouTube for videos explaining I how to tell the difference between wonen's and men's pants. Hint, shallow or non existent front pockets are not men's jeans, but don't bother trying to teach them, they know everything. Today the housewares section was bare. This happens periodically at Goodwill stores. rather than discount stuff like Salvation Army, they remove it in large quantities and sell it in bulk somewhere else. Stupid

    Receipts
    Cosette F.

I found Over-charge errors on my receipt when I got home after unwrapping 22 items of glassware and porcelain I had just purchased. No biggie, mistakes happen, I'll just call the store and find out what I need to do to get this fixed. I spoke to a woman who said I only needed to bring the items that were incorrectly charged along with the receipt. When I got there I saw Bertha, who had rung me up initially, and approached her explaining the situation. She took my receipt and stared at it for a good minute. She did not look at me, she did not say anything and started walking over to the register and I followed. She continued to stare at the receipt and did not make eye contact with me or apologize and says, "I need Marie to help me with this". She yelled out to an employee across the store and asked her to get Marie. Another employee named Chris walked over and said to Bertha that Marie was doing paperwork in the back. He asked Bertha what was going on. He did not greet me or acknowledge me. When Bertha stayed silent, Chris looked at her and then looked at me. Since she ignored him and he was now looking intently to me, I told him the situation. He told me that I had to have all the items here and that the only way they could handle this issue was to check every items price tags and return all the items to me, then re-ring them all back up correctly and re-charge me. I told him that I called and spoke to a lady and she told me I only had to bring the items that needed to be adjusted. He asked me who I spoke to. I said, I didn't get her name. His response was, "It was probably -so and so-, she doesn't know about returns". I asked if he could get Marie to help and he said, "I'm the assistant manager and the policy is that you have to have all the items here". I asked if I could leave the items I brought there with them and Bertha said yes, and she started folding up my receipt to hold on to. I asked her if I can have my receipt and she said, "Oh, yes" and then handed it to me. Chris made some joke to me about something like, "Oh, she wants the receipt!" and was laughing. So I went back home again, and had to re-wrap every item. When I got back there, I placed the box and large bag of things on the counter. Chris saw me and walked over and said, "Oh my god, that's a lot of stuff!". I don't know why he was so surprised, he saw the receipt before I went back. Then Bertha came over and he started showing her how to do the transaction. He then tells her that they don't have to re-ring each item and that they just needed to see them. See them?! He didn't even take them out! He didn't look inside the bag or unwrap any item, no price tags were checked - nothing! He told her she can just use the receipt to re-ring me up and to just change the ones she charged incorrectly. Wow. I held myself together and kept telling myself, be kind, don't take it personally, it's ok. Mind you, at this point - I still did not receive an apology. Chris finished showing Bertha the return part of the transaction and when the transaction printed out he stapled it to the original receipt and Bertha asked him, "We don't give them back their receipt?" He said No and proceeded to have her sign the back of the receipt. I told him, "I would like a copy of the original receipt". He said, "Oh..ok". He had Bertha reprint the returned receipt and never gave me back my original. As long as I had proof that the amount was going back to my card, I was ok with not getting the original. Bertha then said she had to go. He re-rang me up using my copy of the return receipt, which he asked me if he could see. He stacked 3 of the glass bowls on top of each other, unwrapped and placed it on top of the items in my box. He started to try and look for somewhere he could put the 3 wine glasses, unwrapped, and I said to him, "Those are going to need to be wrapped". He didn't even help me wrap them. I asked him for some tissue and he laughed at me and said, "You mean newspaper?" Because they use newspaper to wrap their items. I was nice and polite the whole time despite his rudeness and making weird passive aggressive jokes. I told him I'll make two rounds to bring my things to my car. Bertha was sitting in her car in the parking lot with her window rolled down and yelled out, "I'm sorry about that!". Finally, an apology - from her in her car outside of the shop. When I went back in for the rest of my things, Chris was away from the register and as I was exiting I called out to him, "Thank you!" and he replied, "Yeah, sorry about that!". If I hadn't said thank you, he would have never even apologized. Really bad customer service and clearly they enjoy inconveniencing customers. I drove back and forth making 3 trips for a mistake they made! Karma catches up guys.

Italian Chicken Pitcher purchased from Richmond Goodwill 09/25/11
    Roy N.

Okay, I should be writing reviews about my glamorous jet set life...dining on multi-course $500/head dinners with special pairings of rare library wines accompanying each course, frequenting exclusive clubs with bottle service, and riding around in one-of-a-kind custom limousines. In reality, I am reviewing a Goodwill store in Richmond. What happened?!!! LOL Anyway, this is one of the better Goodwill stores in the bay area. It's fairly large with a good selection and a nice staff. Don't you hate when you go to a store and you have to deal with zombies and the brain dead? Not here! Workers are always friendly and professional here, way more than other Goodwill locations I've been to. Even more surprising when you consider that it's a thrift store in Richmond. Guessing it must be well-managed. Best of all, it's never crowded. Don't let the Richmond location throw you off, this is in a good spot and is located right across from the KFC/Long John Silvers. Their selection is way better than the one in El Sobrante. I don't even bother going to that one anymore. Found many great knickknacks for the home here and all kinds of bargain objet d'art. This is what I hit Goodwills and thrift stores for. I don't do clothes, but have found all kinds of neat and sometimes rare decor touches for the home. Recent purchases include a nice giant haunted mansion looking magic mirror (forgot how much, but it was a steal), assorted statues/spooky stuff, and as of yesterday, an Italian chicken pitcher. Always wanted one of these and this one was authentic from Italy. Best of all, it was only $3.99! I remember reading about these pitchers in a magazine many years ago. Apparently, someone liked the chicken design and used one of these pitchers in a restaurant in Italy. Word spread quickly and it really caught on as everyone suddenly asked for their meal with 'chicken water.' Cute story for a cool little pitcher that makes me smile every time I look at it. (I posted a picture) As always, the key to shopping in this kind of store is to have an eye for what is real or good. I often wonder if the workers at Goodwill stores who price these items are either super generous or simply don't know how rare or valuable an item might be. Not always, but if you have a sharp eye and a bit of luck on your side, you may very well find Lenox or Riedel for pennies on the dollar. You have to weed through the junk for that special find which may or may not exist...it's a Goodwill after all. Regardless, if you're in the area, it's worth a stop. Added plus is the food and restroom at the KFC/Long John Silvers across the parking lot.

This place is great to bring everything you don't want but don't want to throw away.

We don't buy here, We just donate. They have been very good to deal with and seem very happy to get our discards. The store does seem well organized and the people working there are very nice to deal with.

I first shopped at Savers when I lived in Phoenix, AZ, and I've been a huge fan for over 10 years. Everything is donation-based (obviously), so what's available will always vary. PROS: When I went, they had a ton of great options for clothes and shoes!! My cart was full of jeans, dresses (both casual and dressy), statement jackets, and unique tops. I ended up spending $50 and walked away with two pairs of jeans, a long jean skirt, a knit shawl, overalls (which are hard to find in my size), and a couple of tops. There were a few items I wanted to keep soooo bad, but they were $20+ and I wanted to stay on budget. CON: Very, very, very messy and unorganized. This definitely isn't the employees' fault -- they're working as fast as they can -- but so many shoppers pick things up and put them back in random places. My advice is to check all rack sizes in both clothing and shoes. For example, I found a women's 8.5 Hoka in the men's section, though it was priced at $49 (a little steep for me). Hope this helps -- best of luck thrifting!!!!

That is crazy! Those people should be kicked out of the store. That is like harassment. My fiance and I were in that store recently. I saw the guy when I was coming out of the bathroom - which is pretty clean by the way, but there is no door to enter the actual room the stalls are in. That seems dangerous to me. Anyways this dude looked like trouble, I looked at him made eye contact and kept walking. Then later in the store near the shoes he walked up to an older lady and asked her to buy him a coat because he didn't have any money. I don't think that is appropriate. He should go to the Savers people and ask them. I observed and the lady declined and he walked away. This is not something I am willing to deal with every time I come into the store. The Savers in Orange County and the bay area, San Jose and Redwood City do not have such troubles. I haven't found anything in that store that I purchased. So, I will not be back. The staff is ok, there are not many mirrors, no dressing rooms, and just a really sketchy area. I am disappointed this wasn't a better store. I was really looking forward to it! I just recalled, when this store first opened we visited it. It was so much cleaner, brighter, and there were not random unhoused people harassing the shoppers. We actually purchased 3 sports coats for my fiance which were a great deal for some nice coats. I hope maybe one day they will get security who can help filter through who enters the store or at least be aware when one is acting inappropriately. I see someone in a different post mentioned Ross. I agree Linda B. I end up at Ross and get new items at better prices than that Savers, and there is not anyone in there asking me to buy them anything! They have security and a great team. Thanks for reading. I would absolutely advise stay away from this Savers. It is really gross and unpredictable.

I did not know much about BARM, other than they do offer meals to the needy and are a Christian-faith organization. We had no idea what we'll be helping with on the day of arrival. Our entire group of 12 or so did have to pass a COVID Antigen test before entering. Our event turned out to be kitchen duties, like you read about in Kitchen Confidential or from cooking reality shows. Everyone was super friendly, but you feel the adrenalin of working hard in a commercial kitchen. You work as a team and you work safely, since you got hot surfaces, sharp objects, boiling liquids and occasionally wet floor everywhere. My main task was dishwasher, which brings back memories of my first job. Scrape, Rinse, Sanitize and dry! Those high-powered Hobart washing machines make cleanup a snap. The feel of the nozzle is great as it blasts away all food scraps. Wish I had these at home! My next task was helping cutting up some 30-50 pounds of chicken breast for a marinade. The chef was planning to make some coconut-curry soup so he occasionally dumped Five-Spice and Chili Sauce as we cut. Those Dexter Chef Knifes were super sharp and the blade was something like 10" to 12" long, like a short sword. I thought my home 6" Henckels Chef Knife was sharp but those Dexter knives were on a different level. At the end, I can show my blisters proudly. My other colleagues served food to customers, cooked, diced vegetables, cracked dozens of eggs, unloaded a delivery truck, and moved things to the freezers. They got some high-quality produce here from Costco, Sprouts, and Trader Joes, and some of it organic! Highly recommend considering BARM if you're interested in volunteering some time. Being in a commercial kitchen was also fun since you experience what its like to be part of the machine that cranks out food. Everyone had a role to play to make it possible to crank out 50-100 meals per shift.
