Any business that supports the health care, education welfare and safety of animals is a go to for me. Not only do I shop here...all my donations go directly to this Animal Charity Shop as well. As I am told...the thrift store in Albany and (the Elmwood, Berkeley store) are run by a few paid staff members and the rest of the work is by an incredible team of volunteers. My husband had a few bags of men's dress shirt, casual button down shirts, jackets, and slacks. They were very appreciative to receive the donation and said they were in need of more men's clothing. I just discovered this gem a couple of months ago and it's quickly become my favorite local shop. I've already been back several times and can't seem to leave the store without getting a few things :) The store is beautifully curated with items that are unique and good quality. Plus, items are very reasonably priced. I've purchased a number of housewares (handmade ceramics, framed art, glassware), as well as fun gifts for family (like vintage Laurel Burch earrings). An amazing added bonus is that purchases support the Berkeley Humane Society - which, as an animal lover, makes my heart super happy. read more

While I've looked through this store before but never purchased anything, I recently bought an amazing and adorable belt here for about $4 that I wore with almost everything when I was in Turkey. It really was a nice find. I want to note that since I visit vintage stores all over the US, I'm pretty used to security (shoutout to Recess in LA whose bouncer wears a three piece vintage suit and tie) but I could see how the man here who just stares at you while you shop could make other women feel uncomfortable enough to leave. Although he may have been hired for security or loss prevention, he doesn't seem like he has a background in it. That feedback aside, the service was very friendly and sweet once we were at the counter. This was my first time walking around in the town of Albany. I saw a sign saying "Thrift Store", which got ny attention. I walked across the street, and noticed that this place was jumping with women--kind of unusual during these covid days. This was a thrift store with a twist--you can bring your dog while you shop and they also have treats at the front door and at the back door for your cute pooch. All the proceeds of the sales go to the Humane Society of Berkeley. As I entered the store, to the right were several (I think maybe four) boutique racks. These were the cream of the crop rags--mostlty for women or men who like to dress like women. The majority of the garb seemed to be size small, and some of them with the original tags. I saw the cutest beaded flapper dress (size small)--the tag was blank--was it free? I asked a helpful volunteer. She smiled and checked with someone in the back--$25--a steal these days but it was size Small--darn! I texted my friend and sent her a pic--she said she would try to stop by to see it. This store is surrounded by communities with money who buy expensive clothing and who have pets. Guess where they donate their "old" dresses and precious relics they no longer want? Here! Besides clothing they also have collectibles...you will never know what you will find here. I found 2 sexy dresses that I could squeeze into--$9 each--and I don't have to feel guilty because I am helping cute little kitties and puppies. read more

I've been here multiple times and appreciate the amiable volunteer employees. The store has a great selection per square foot. Prices are somewhat more expensive than Goodwill or Out of the Closet. However, I've been able to buy many high-quality items for a fraction of their retail price, including clothes, shoes, jewelry, books, and bric-a-brac. For example, I bought a pair of sandals here for $12.50 that retail for $125 new. I don't mind if I paid a few extra dollars for this kind of savings. This thrift store also has a dressing room which is becoming rare these days. There are certain things I can only buy after trying on (especially pants and dresses) so I was so relieved I could do that here. Also, I support their cause because I love pets. Packed with artifacts of various range- forever 21 and mossimo, postcards and costume jewelry from the 80s, a clarinet, paperbacks, a handful of cool screen tees. Reasonable prices like goodwill- $6 shirts, $10 sweaters/ sweatshirts. Takes credit card. Well organized and items are in pretty good to very good condition. I imagine finding hidden treasures here is a hit or miss - maybe slightly more miss than hit- but that's my expectation when thrift shopping. read more

Located in the former foam shop this is a fun place to find vintage items and fun finds at bargain prices. Best of all it is dog friendly with a treat jar for you best buddy. They have art, books, DVDs, jewelry, housewares (not electric) purses, shoes, accessories, and clothing for teens and above. The boutique area features unique vintage fashion at fraction of retail. Check out the fun themed window displays. Staffed by volunteers and all proceeds support medical care for homeless pets. read more

I love this store, everyone is very friendly and the displays are perfection! Luckily, the donations are really nice because they have a really nice selection. Most of the nice clothing however, which is about half the store, it's priced too high for a thrift store in my opinion. The prices are similar to those you would find at crossroads or other consignment shops. I understand it's for a good cause as most thrift stores are. If there was a way for items to be reduced after they're on the floor for too long that would be one thing, but things don't seem to go on sale. For those kind of prices I think you need to have an exchange policy or more dressing rooms, or reduced priced after it's on the floor for X amount of weeks. Mostly I just go to the household items now which are reasonably priced which makes it fun. Anyway that's just my two cents, If I could give 3 1/2 stars I would. But 3 seems too low. read more

I was told about the store from a friend who frequents it often so while I was in the area I decided to stop by. I found a beautiful tea set, but unfortunately I was made to feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome while in the store. The male who was in the store made a point to speak to every single person in the store but myself and made sure to keep a close eye on me while I walked around the store.. I am not sure if he thought I was going to steal something or why he would go out of his way to walk around and greet every other customer in the store and make light conversation. Just to see if this was true, I stood at the jewelry counter waiting while the man looked at me and did not bother to come over and ask if I wanted to see anything. I noticed when another man walked up to the counter after I walked away he promptly went to ask the man if he wanted to see anything. This was absolutely disheartening as I had heard good things about this store. The only reason I saw the tea set I ended up purchasing was because I was walking out of the store. When I went to pay for my items the man made his way to the counter while I was paying (I guess to make sure I paid for my items..). During this time he managed to actually speak to me me saying he would wrap the tea set.. as soon as my transaction went through he rushed away from the counter to greet another customer who walked in. By the time I walked out of the store the spot where I had picked the tea set up from had been replaced with another item (I'm guessing this is because he was watching me so hard as I picked the tea set up and went to the register. I will not be returning to this store and I hope people learn to be a little less judgmental of others based on what they look like and learn to speak to people with respect and get to know them. (Maybe a racial sensitivity training is needed). As an FYI to the man who I am speaking of, I do not need to steal anything I have a master's degree and a full time career.. My level of education and employment should not even have to be brought up, but even if I did not have these things I would hope that you would have the decency not to treat people as lesser than yourself based on what they look like. The only reason I am giving this place two stars is because the woman at the counter who rang me up was pleasant and the tea set I purchased. read more

The items on the floor are curated by the staff, who tirelessly sifts through tons of donations for diamonds in the rough. Their social media (facebook, instagram, maybe more?) posts regularly with a recent find and they always stock some brand name items. The store is also very clean and bright. There's a shelf by one of the windows selling goodies for the cats and dogs in your life - a kind reminder of this thrift shop's mission. The only reason I didn't walk away with anything was because everything I loved was in a size too large or too small for me. They carry all the sizes you'd expect from a thrift shop and restock everyday so I highly recommend checking them out if you're in the area! Even if you're not in the area, because I went out of my way to visit and I absolutely see myself doing it again. read more

Had a slightly poor experience here, unfortunately. They've closed their dressing room, due to Covid restrictions. But unlike other thrift stores, they have not counteracted that by implementing a return policy, so you can try something on at home and if it does not fit bring it back. I purchased a sweater off the men's rack, that was listed as a large. Upon returning home, it became clear when I tried it on that it was actually a women's sweater, not a men's. The sleeves were to thin and short. I drove back down and explained the situation and was told they could not exchange it for another, due to "all the stuff that's going on" A little shocked, I handed the sweater over to them and said "well it doesn't fit me, so I guess I'll just donate it back. " The lady working there (who was very nice) was happy to take the sweater back as a donation. So my question is, how is this no-return policy in any way Covid-related if you are willing to have me in the store and you are happy to take the sweater back anyway? It wouldn't normally be an issue, but being unemployed due to Covid, and needing to rely on thrift stores like I am, it felt like a little punch in the gut, and it was embarrassing. read more

Best thrift shop I have been in, hands down. Not only does it feel carefully curated, the windows feature such adorably styled outfits you can help but pop in! Aside from clothing, they also carry a small assortment of home decor, dishes and cookware. The shop has more women's than men's clothing, but both are present. Today I scored an Ann Taylor fit and flare dress, NWT, for $9!! Stop in if you're in the area and you may be surprised at what you find. The employees are all quite friendly and excited about what they're doing. Today the employee with the awesome yellow glasses walked up to a gal looking for pots, and immediately offered to bring her out a few they had in the back, providing tips on how to "restore" them, and even called out which brands were the "nicer" brands that would last longer. He then offered to store them all behind the counter while she continued to shop to avoid making her lug a bunch of pots around the rest of the afternoon. I literally walked in the store excited because I didn't know it existed I was in there 15 minutes and not one person spoke to me. I even stood by the jury for a long time just to see if the lady behind the counter would speak and no one spoke. Yes I am a black American and I was the only black American in the store. I watch the lady behind the counter assist with an Asian couple yet didn't give their undivided attention to her to them because she was too busy looking at the Caucasian lady that just tried on something to ask her how everything went. I normally don't post things like this because I'm just used to it but you can at least speak. I don't know if Caucasian people are taught don't speak to other people of color or other origins besides Caucasian what at least speak that's the least you can do now if they wanna know who I am I hat on orange with a very colorful shirt I'm sure they're going to know it is Friday, May 6 at 5:23 and I am still literally outside of the store because I got ice cream next-door or across the street I should say. My mouth is just wide-open because this is 2022 and you don't have to hold a conversation with other races but at least speak. I saw a few things that I would have love to buy but I refuse to give people my money that won't speak to me at least. The staff (who are all volunteers, how cool is that?) are knowledgeable and friendly. And every purchase helps dogs and cats that need expensive surgeries or other things. My friend and I happened to shop here a few weeks ago during the week after having brunch in the area. I have been meaning to write this review because our experience with some aspects of the customer service were unfortunately negative. The store has great wares, the displays are awesome and the cause is commendable. Both my friend and I are pet owners and have great respect for Berkeley Humane. It's this combination of positives that happily and excitedly brought us in. We were greeted well by an older woman manning the front of the store. But, it's when we were looking at the clothing items, trying on clothing items in the back of the store, and asking pricing questions that we started to feel uncomfortable. Donna was the woman manning the register and back of the store and she was very unwelcoming. We asked about pricing on an older apparel that was stained and it was clear that she not interested in getting questions from us, two Latina women. She never smiled at us and at one point, rushed us out of the dressing room. We still ended up buying several items but, bad impressions linger. This is a store with great potential to serve its cause. It's a pity that it is staffed with some managers that clearly need better customer service and sensitivity training. Managers like Donna need to sent back to the animal shelter for their volunteer help and replaced with managers who can genuinely work with the diversity of its patrons. read more

Great space, super location, very clean and organized. However, this is NOT a thrift store, it is a resale store. $35 for a 50's tablecloth with stains, $200 for a no label so-so 60's coat. Ask for a markdown due to damage and you'll get a huffy lecture about how you'd be taking money away from cats and dogs who need surgery. They get some lovely donations but don't expect any deals. read more
