Went there on a beautiful Saturday morning, made reservation online but front desk said you don't really need a reservation just sit wherever you like. Ah and they never checked me in... Restaurant is located in an old building in the hotel, everything was good, other than you may get mosquito bites at times... Food was good but service is meh... I think the kitchen is way understaffed, we waited 30 minutes for our entree (so did other tables), and the server was like "Eh I know we messed up so I better not talk with them.." she glanced us several times without come asking anything... Absolutely perfect brunch! Every part of our brunch today was fantastic: from the service to the gourmet donut holes, we absolutely enjoyed our meal. The fried chicken was cooked perfectly and sprinkled with a touch of sea salt; the biscuits were a southern classic--they crumbled just the right way. And the donuts were incredible! Pretty abysmal choice for a New Years dinner. $75pp pre fixe menu should be decent right? no menu on the website, or anywhere online for that matter, so we didn't know what to expect which is fine- but come 8pm, after being contacted to confirm my reservation twice- the place is dead. We stood in the restaurant for a good 5 mins before a hostess emerged from the curtains and sat us at our table. No drink menu was offered.... on New Year's Eve. When we requested one, one - and only one- was brought. Hmm..... ok so the food- beet and goat cheese starter was fresh and tasty, but no more than 3 bites. Main was a nice cut of beef, oddly served alongside a tiny cup of red beans and rice. It was suddenly dessert time, the wrong selections came out (mind you, there are about 8 diners in the entire place) but I have to admit the lemon cake was beautiful as was the sweet potato pie. We had two different waiters- first guy was incredibly rude, he actually mocked one of us at the table, second (younger) guy spilled about a quarter of our Moët bottle whilst pouring. I was staying at the hotel by myself for thanksgiving. I made the mistake of calling at 9:50 to inquire about room service. I was very rudely berated by a guy named Nick for calling because apparently I should have known that breakfast ended at 9:30. I was very rudely told that I should have been told at check in and that I should have been sent an email stating such *I was not made aware* how dare I call and ask. Very poor experience for Thanksgiving dinner. This is the only time I have been to Goodall's so I cannot comment on their regular service. First, the ambiance was disappointing. Lights were very bright and there were little to no festive decorations. Given the price per person, I would expect a little effort, maybe a candle on the table would have been nice. Second, and most importantly, they ran out of different food items. We sat around 6pm so one would expect a full menu available, especially on thanksgiving when people want a full plate of food. (On top of paying $65 per person). The biggest let down of the night was being out of Pumpkin Pie!!! To me, this is like being out of Turkey...unbelievable. I might consider going back to Goodall's for a different meal, as food I did have was good, but definitely not going back for Thanksgiving. read more

I've been struggling writing this review for a while. I love the look of the restaurant and how clean it is, but that's really about it. Super small menu, but that's okay as long as everything tastes great. I got the Migas it had one egg, maybe a third of a cup of beans a half of slice of bacon and a few tortilla strips and that was it. It was beautifully presented, but the whites of the egg were so raw I got grossed out and couldn't even eat it. The beans were cold. I literally barely touched it and the waiter came by and asked me if I was done and just took it. Didn't ask if I liked it or anything. If I had more time I would have asked for a different item. This place is a joke. Husband and I showed up at 7:30 on a Thursday and found there was only one table with diners. Despite that and the waitress seeing us walk by the ONE table she was working, we waited over five minutes at the front and were never greeted or seated. After that, I gave up and went out and asked the valet to give me my car back. There's no excuse for being ignored for that long but there certainly isn't one for being excused for that long in AN EMPTY RESTAURANT. We left and went to June's and it was excellent. read more

But the new Hotel Ella and Goodall's Kitchen as cleaned up the place, swept away the cobwebs (and ghosts), and it's a completely different dining experience! The interior is much more contemporary, there's a cute little fire roaring in the corner, and there's a swanky new pool and hangout area out back. The wraparound porch is still perfect for dinner or drinks and West Campus pedestrian watching. We sat in a cozy spot in the corner and I tried the Moscow Mule, kicked with ginger, and served in a little tin cup, like something you might find a cowboy drinking out of when he settles in for the night. The ahi tuna with jicama and sesame seeds was excellent. The seared scallop was delicious. We're landlocked here, people, and we all know we need more good seafood in Austin, after decades of doing without. This is a great place to sample some. I have to say that I'm not a huge fan of eggplant, but loved the way Scott Mechura--who's rubbed shoulders with Anthony Bourdain--prepared these grilled Japanese eggplants, as well as the hash brown cake. The chef's mac and cheese with its bacon and its scrumptious chili pepper bread crumb topping can't be beat. And the prime rib eye with swiss chard was my most favorite, as if favorite weren't enough of a superlative. The table fell silent when we consumed the tiniest crème brulee I'd ever seen. It was something out of Zoolander it was so small. But if you could get your fork in it, the spoon was too big for the bowl, then it was so perfect, with giants chunks of salt, just to keep things balanced. We ended with a tour of the pool, ballroom, and the sculptures, one that Umlauf's son had made, and one that was a nudie statue of Farrah Fawcett when she attended UT Austin and was seeking extra cash from art-modeling before she dropped out to pursue her acting career. Hot Tip: the valet parking is right in front, facing MLK, but it's a little hidden behind the construction. read more

Good thing we were preoccupied with chit chat, before we realized it was 30+ minutes for each beverage order to be brought to the table. Come on guys, it's only a mimosa! I ate at Goodalls for lunch with clients and left disappointed. I'll first say that the food was great and my 2-star rating is largely attributed to service. The seared tuna sandwich was done well and had a good combination of flavor but the roll on which it is served was a little much for my preference. I will definitely consider going back based on the food alone. I gave a 2-star rating because of poor service and more specifically, poor kitchen management. We let the restaurant know days in advance of our 1.5 hour time constraint and we were assured it would not be an issue despite a large party's reservation an hour before. Long story short, an hour and fifteen minutes after we sat down our food finally arrived. Further, a similar sized group (7-8 people) arrived after we did, ate, paid the check and left before we got our food. I understand that a large party can affect the turnaround time in the kitchen but all things considered, this was a prime example of poor kitchen management and poor customer service. read more

Came here to this place because on the city website it said they had fried chicken night. Unfortunately, Fried Chicken night had been discontinued by the restaurant for a while apparently. We thoroughly enjoyed the food. The only things that we did not enjoy was the carrots. The mac and cheese was okay and I had better. The salmon that we had was lightly seasoned and had a great flavor that did not take away from the fish. The was extraordinary with the exception of the liquid portion was not cooked through completely and they had to throw it back on the grill. It came out a second time and the drumstick was still a little bloody so that part did not get eaten. Otherwise it was superb as far as the flavor and texture. The green beans and the sauce used was out of this world. The waiter was nice enough to remove the cost of the undercooked entree. read more

Six cocktails later... First of all, why isn't there on a limit on the number of cocktails that they allow you to consume? I suppose that should automatically give them a five star rating. But not so fast. My friend and I stopped by for Monday night libations (the best day to drink, in my opinion). I didn't see an obvious parking lot, so I pulled in front of Hotel Ella. The valet was kind enough to park my car for me. Thankfully, because it was cold and rainy. And I hate aerobic exercise. Anyway, their immediately staff greeted me and escorted me to the bar. I was a little surprised when I saw the bar. It was chic, but really small. I don't think more than 10 people could fit in the bar area comfortably. There was a good sized table in the center of the room with a few stools, and a single bench that ran the width of the room along the front wall of the room. Since the table and all the stools were taken, my friend and I sat on the bench. It was actually pretty comfortable. My only complaint is that there wasn't a solid surface nearby to put our drinks on. I ended up ordering a Pimm's Cup, and my friend had the Moscow Mule. Both were really refreshing and addicting. Obviously, since I ordered a few more of them. I wish I had gotten the bartender's name. He kept bringing me drinks. He was awesome. Overall, this is a great place to go if you want to be able to drink and have a conversation at the same time. It was refreshing to actually be able to hear the person sitting next to me. read more

Horrible management policy on separate forms of payment!!! I hate to write a review like this, but I am completely dumbfounded with the management of this restaurant. They have completely changed the ambiance with removal of the white linens and carpet; which, I believe is more conducive to attracting a regular patron of the foodie crowd. The drinks are great and the food was AMAZING; especially the mac n' cheese, black pepper tagliatelle, and the burger! We had a great girls' night which ended on a sour note because of 'policy' to not allow more than 3 forms of payment inclusive of cash. What??!?!? Our group typically pays over 20% tip, but Blake (the waiter) was skipped because we only had a small amount of cash on us to pay the bill. The same goes for the valet which only received a couple bucks because all of our cash went to paying the check. We were wondering why the restaurant was completely EMPTY while we waited for our meal. We certainly will not be returning any time soon as our foodie crowd likes to ensure we adequately pay what each of us feels flexible to order. What a shame that a great chef and restaurant will not accommodate a group larger than three. For a place that is peddling expensive estate jewelry in the lobby of a beautifully redone mansion, I think they need to regroup quickly about the menu and service. Dining and drinking experiences do not match. Nice old mansion, yadda yadda. You can put a lot of lipstick on a pig. Read the history in a local mag for some interesting old tales of this place. But save your moolah for another dining experience somewhere else in Austin. Dined with 8 people in our party, and there were only 2 or 3 other small tables seated. We seemed to be an inconvenience to the waiter. Very little engagement when we had questions about the menu (how about a suggestion!). He disappeared quickly after dropping things in front of us and was hard to find again. I found for a non-meat eater, that my veg and fish options were very limited. Mac and cheese: Oily, uninteresting. If you are dying for something tasty, go to Roaring Fork for the hatch chili mac and cheese. Fries and brussel sprouts: Why bother mentioning the sprouts? This was mostly fries. Freedman's has good sprouts. Cocktails: Apparently the only thing to write home about here, but come on, there are 50 other places for nice craft cocktails in Austin right now. This cannot be the only thing you are good at when you are a restaurant in a historic mansion. Veggie plate: I actually forgot about it and just remembered that's what I ordered! This review is for the bar only. (Yelp really should split the reviews, as the bar and restaurant are totally separate.) Summary: Bartender great, drinks good and reasonably priced. Bar stool very hard to deal with and the rest of the seating arrangements looked inhospitable for a single person or a couple. Food not bad, but one item of it terribly overpriced in my opinion. Bartender: Five stars. There when I needed him and not there when I didn't, which is my simple definition of good service. And he could make a proper martini, which is rarer than you might think for such a simple drink. (No, I do not mean goop served in a martini glass.) Hmmmm.... Well, looking at my bill, I ordered a rye old fashioned and was rung up for a bourbon old fashioned. (Rye and bourbon *are* two different things.) Obviously I cannot tell the difference in an old fashioned (the only thing I can reliably recognize is a martini made with what I want and the way I want), so that's a wash. It was good. Decor: Four stars. Cute old rooms, of course, which appeared to be hung with portraits of Texans, many of whom got out as soon as they could. Comfort: One star. What a weird layout, and what hard-to-move bar stools. (I have never understood the concept of bar stools except at a bar anyway - if you're going to have tables, why not make them a height that's convenient for the sitters?) My bar stool was comfortable once I got in and got it up to the table, but doing so was practically an Olympic event. There was this weird long zigzag couch against one wall with a table in front of only a part of it - what are the non-table people supposed to do with their drinks? Plus some of the angles would put people knee-to-knee at a 90-degree angle - as I said, weird. An outer room had a lot of chairs and couches around a cocktail table in a circle. Well, great for a big group (I mean ten or twelve people), but it's kinda useless for several small groups unless they want to fuse themselves into a big group. And the table was close enough to use for only some of the seating, so again people are left just holding their drinks. Drinks: Five stars for execution and for value at the prices that were rung up for me. I guess it was happy hour.....? The menu drinks were mostly overpriced at list price, but aren't they always. I had to snicker at some of the self-congratulatory, ain't-Austin-cool descriptions. Sorry, guys, no place in Texas even approaches cool the way you mean it on your menu. I have very little stomach for Texas self-promotion. Oh, speaking of which..... Clientele: (At least the ones that passed through while I was there.) Loud, self-congratulatory yuppies (or whatever the term for that is nowadays). Pretty icky except for the entertainment factor. Two stars - the entertainment factor wasn't that high - I was just extracting what I could. Food: House baked gougères, cultured butter, smoked salt (i.e., bread and butter). The bread was hot and the butter was soft, but there wasn't much taste there. Two stars for the taste-to-calorie ratio, which was unacceptably low. Russet Potato chips, caramelized onion creme fraiche, spicy aioli. Not bad. I've never had good house-made potato chips one single time (don't ask me why I still occasionally order them), but these were less bad than most. Three stars. I can't find on the menu exactly what I ordered next, expecting enough to call it a small meal - the closest I can come is "ceviche, scallops, corn, red onion, cilantro, Fredericksburg peaches." Yeah, I know - odd wording. Ceviche of *what*? So are the scallops what the ceviche is made of? One assumes, but that's not what the menu listing says. What I *thought* I ordered was "scallop ceviche," and I *thought* it said $16 on the menu. (The online menu says $12, but my check says $16, so I'm going with what I remember.) Well, it tasted good and it was served cutely on a plank and in shells, but there was hardly anything there and a very small amount of what was there was actually (finely chopped) scallops. I estimate there was one medium to large scallop in it, tops. Since I have had five of such for $32 at Artista (not known for being cheap) fairly recently, I find this an unacceptably high price-to-food ratio. I'm not normally that sensitive to price-to-food ratio, but I do have my limits. Looking up ceviche, though, I've determined that I'm not going to eat it anymore - I didn't realize the citrus marinade did not kill bacteria and parasites. That's OK - I like them better seared anyway. The ceviche was just the best-sounding thing I found on that particular menu. read more

This wonderful eatery/bar is located in the new Hotel Ella. A best kept secret....so far. The lunch menu was simple yet difficult to choose from as the choices all looked delicious. I ordered the Roasted Turkey sandwich with pesto and melted brie. The sandwich pretty much melted in your mouth...amazing flavor. In lieu of fries I ordered a side Caesar...yum. The service was spot on, the staff all happy with their environment. I am most anxious to check out their happy hour. The bar looks inviting along with their wine menu. I JUST discovered this place for watching Downton Abbey! Whaaaat? Totally perfect for DA! If you dress up (I sadly did not), you get a free cocktail, but there is also a SUBSTANTIAL discount just because you are there watching the show. Which is good, as the drinks were pricey, but not as high as you'd expect from a classy hotel bar. The bar is quite small, like someone's living room and there are actually two sitting areas, so more like 2 someones' living rooms. Incredibly disappointed with my experience this morning. Waited at the host stand for a long time to be greeted then after we sat it took even longer for someone to bring water. I'm not sure if our server normally works in the restaurant or not but he had no idea what he was doing. He took the drink order (a sweet tea, 3 coffees, a Bloody Mary, and a Jack and Coke) and then couldn't remember who ordered what. He ran the Bloody Mary separately to a different table! We ordered our meal (skillet, pancakes, and 3 medium rare steak and eggs). The meal took over 30 minutes to come out and only did after we pulled the server and asked what was going on. All three steaks were cold. My pancakes were tasty but come on! Waited 20 minutes for someone to notice I was out of tea (which came unsweetened by the way). The ambiance of the restaurant was really nice but the service was terrible. As someone who actually works in the industry I tend to be very forgiving but this was just an incredibly bad experience. read more

It pains me to write this review since I have been here several times in the past without any issues. I am writing this review for two main reasons. 1. The cocktails are way too weak. There is no reason why you should have to pay $10.00 for ginger beer when it should be a Moscow Mule. 2 My credit card number was stolen and sold after I visited the bar. Thank goodness my credit card company is so awesome otherwise my credit card would have been used all over New York City! When I called and spoke with the manager he stated that he would contact the IT department to make sure that their systems weren't compromised. I actually know a thing or two about cyber risks and the only issue is their lackadaisical hiring practices, they should spend the money and do a better background check on the bartenders. We recently hosted our company holiday party at Goodall's Kitchen. Not only could they accommodate our party of 50 (which turned out to be only 40) but I felt as though the food was priced just right. Tiffany was very responsive during the initial conversations and was always more than happy to help with questions. Once I arrived I met Tiffany and she introduced me to James who would be helping me that night. James was so attentive. He checked in with me multiple times that evening to make sure we had everything we needed and that their staff was meeting our expectations, they certainly were. It's difficult to please a party of this size and is a group effort and a lot of hard work. From the management down to the servers all was great. Based on the feedback I received everyone was completely satisfied with the entire Goodall's experience and I would recommend to anyone. Great food and great service! read more

Living in West Campus, I always wondered what was inside this fancy mansion-like hotel. With fancy decor inside and dim lighting, this place would be a perfect date night. Fortunately I recently attended an event that let me try several of Goodall's dishes. The food portions from this restaurant are small, but each plate packs of ton of flavors. I loved the Seared Scallops with that caramelized onion honey. The Ahi Tuna and Avocado was refreshing. And that Red Wine Glazed Prime Rib Eye...so good! For drinks, the West Campus Mule really brought out the ginger flavor. My favorite though was the Pimm's Cup. When the Nutelle Creme Brulee came out, my whole table fell silent as we ate that precious delectable dessert. Everyone was furiously trying to scrap out the corners with our big spoons to savor every bite. The Chocolate Molten Cake with Bananas and Pear Sorbet surprisingly wasn't sweet which I liked. With the high price tag on each dish, I expected the portions to be a little bigger. But overall an awesome experience that would make me want to come back for more! read more

I went to Goodalls for dinner with my wife for her birthday. We were excited to try somewhere new and this place came highly recommended. The restaurant was nicely decorated and had a good ambiance. We were the only ones there on a Wednesday at 7 pm, so we got to pick out seat out. The manager was extremely pleasant, as was the waiter. The waiter knew a lot about the food items, gave great recommendations, and did not hover too much even though we were his only table. As for the food, it was amazing. I had one of my best meals in Austin. We started out with the grilled cauliflower with goat cheese and garlic. It was a perfect blend of flavors. We then had the ceviche which was refreshing and delicious. For the main dish, we split the buttermilk fried chicken and a side of corn hash and potato puree. All of them were fantastic. EXCELLENT dinner last night. The food was very good - to start, the pork belly tater tots were good, albeit a little heavily breaded. The ceviche was also excellent, as was the caesar salad. Everything was very flavorful. The bread basket they brought to the table was warm, fresh, and spot-on! The Sazerac cocktail & wine we had before dinner was great. For an entree, my wife and I split the pork tenderloin dish. An excellent medley, with the whipped bourbon cream complimenting it nicely. The one (significant) catch was that, due to a "sequencing error in the kitchen", we did not receive our entree until about an hour after we ordered. However, big kuddos to both the waiter and the manager here -- they took both the entree and our side of brussell sprouts off of the bill without us ever asking. Ate here while I stayed at Hotel Ella on a business trip. The decor and ambiance are perfect. I ordered the carrot bisque and the carrot salad with shrimp. I found the carrot bisque to be really oily and sweet. Oily as in..I had to mix it after every sip as the oil would immediately come to the top. I could only eat about half of it. When the salad arrived, the shrimp were equally as oily. Like..slippery almost and really heavy. I debated eating them. The carrot salad was the savior and it was really delicious. The carrot wasn't raw, but it didn't taste too cooked and there were a lot of great flavors with the feta and avocado. The dessert also has great reviews, so maybe I will give that a try. I will probably eat here again since it's so convenient and other reviewers raved about the food. I found everyone working here to be really good. I definitely wouldn't make a special trip here when there are so many great places in Austin. read more

Great service; then again, we were the only group in the restaurant. The bill was pricey. $400 for the four of us, granted this included our 2-3 drinks per person. I had lunch with my father here today. It was one of those "kill two birds with one stone" situations since I was also wanting to see the space for my up-coming wedding. The food was decent and I really enjoyed the atmosphere. However, our waiter was semi-absent. It was so odd. We'd wait and wait for him for what seemed like ages, then he would just appear of out the blue. He was a very pleasant gentleman who could have been a bit more attentive. Wow. No they didn't! Just horrible all the way around. Service was awful: 45 minutes for cocktails. Twice. 30 minutes waiting for the check. Another 30 for someone to come and collect it. Water refills? Is that a thing? I'm guessing not. The food was... meh. Dry. Bland. Ho-hum presentation. Completely underwhelming. I've had better salmon at Chili's. In comparison, I just spent 4 days at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge in Phoenix, similar pricing and accommodations, and the food was delicious, well presented and good portions. This was probably the worst dining experience of my life. When I'm paying $120 for dinner I expect a whole lot more. read more
