Terrible communication/availability. You will pay and not get appointment for weeks. Save your money.

This is a response to Leigh's reply: In short, I have documentation that proves what I wrote in my initial review. I received only 4 of the 35 lessons (and never got the 2 on-course ones). Texts that prove I had to reschedule only 1 of those 4 lessons within 24 hrs because I was sick (all other reschedule requests were by Leigh, who initiated 3 in total - including 1 within 24 hrs of the scheduled lesson). The texts also prove Leigh was unresponsive for several days at a time on more than one occasion about rescheduling even when he was the initiator to ask for the change. At one point, he had to ask me to remind him when our next lesson was scheduled because he didn't know! There is clear proof I offered 2X the value of those 4 lessons ($40 each vs. $20 each) - which I still believe was a more than fair offer. I never asked for a full refund - ever. I initiated that offer as a compromise to Leigh and only asked for the balance of my payment. In addition to the compromise I described above, I also offered to pay Leigh on a pay-as-we-go schedule AND at a higher rate than the original packaged rate. When it was clear that no compromise could be reached, I initiated a charge-back with my CC company - again, consistent with the offer I described above (whereas I could have easily asked for a higher chargeback considering the actual package rate of those 4 lessons). Leigh has tried to fall back on the assertion that his standard lesson rate is $75/hr, that I am "severely undervaluing" his time / worth - yet he was the one who initially offered and pressed me to sign up for a 10-lesson package for $200 during my first ever Groupon lesson with him (lesson 1 of 3 from the Groupon deals he regularly runs). In retrospect, I made a grave mistake by assuming the quality of that first Groupon lesson would carry over to future lessons - and Leigh and I settled on a 1-year package w/ 35, 1-hr lessons + 2 on-course lessons. Again, I received only 4 of those 1-hr lessons in a 2-month period. At that rate, I knew I would never get the remainder of the lessons in a reasonable period. And I would lose any claim at a refund from my CC company after a certain period of time - not to mention that money would be better used to take lessons somewhere else. I have proof of all of this and Leigh's defensiveness and unwillingness to compromise. Out of respect for Leigh's privacy, I'm not going to post the texts or other documentation that clearly support my case - but I have already shared this with my CC company who have since already ruled in favor of my recount of this experience. They shared Leigh's written rebuttal to the chargeback - which, just like Leigh's reply on this review, lacked any substantial evidence whatsoever. Leigh reply only further highlights his defensive nature and inability to admit there are clear problems with his business. This is unfortunate, because I even tried to help him by sharing technology solutions (e.g., auto-syncing lesson videos to Google Drive so he doesn't have to do this manually - an issue you can find in other reviews - as well as scheduling tool options). As a final word: The prices of the Groupon packages are incredibly enticing. You will not find a cheaper rate for golf lessons in the Bay Area. But please consider this review carefully - especially if you are considering a longer-term lesson package. read more

Back in August I played my first game of golf and man was I bad. I think I might have swung the club at least 200 times! By the end of it, all I could think about was the wonderful feeling of pure contact on the ball. At that point I knew I caught the golf big. Which now brings me here. Through my competitive nature I wanted to learn how to perfect my game. Leigh had a groupon for 3 lessons. During my first session he broke down my swing (a lot to work on) and established our next several meetings to go over the fundamentals. He was technical and provided instructions on how to correct my swing. With some additional practice at the range I have drastically improved in the 8 sessions so far. With Leigh you will receive a coach who loves the game and cares about your progress. He is a personable and is someone who will be straight with you! He was friendly and personable, which is hard to find in this day and age especially in tech valley. Great instructor. Golf, like a lot in life, you get out what you put in. Leigh gives you the tools to be successful, but it's up to you to go out and put the work in in between lessons. I appreciate his patience and detailed feedback. In just 3 sessions he transformed my swing, but maybe more importantly he transformed my mindset. Unfortunately, I am moving back to the East Coast and only have 5 more sessions left with Leigh. It not for the move, I'd be a client for life. My girl bought me a 3 lesson package through Groupon. I tried to go to the the website to book a lesson. The website wasn't responding to my entries. I had to email in. I finally spoke to Leigh who gave me a couple of options. I ended up finally booking an appointment. I went in and met with Mark. It seemed like Mark was pretty chatty which is ok. But he was more interested in my hat than really analyzing my swing. In the final 10 minutes of the lesson, Mark started cleaning up instead of working with me. He left me there using some video machine during those 10 minutes. The one tip he told me was to close the club face and swing inside the ball. But he never really tried to tell me ho to stay inside. It was very strange. When I asked him about the angle of my backswing, he told me, "don't worry about that yet". I tried to go online to book a 2nd appointment but found the same difficulties. I emailed in and never heard back from anyone for a second lesson. It seemed like the website wasn't set up to fully function across all website browsers. If that is the case, DON'T MAKE PEOPLE WASTE THEIR TIME BOOKING LESSONS WHEN YOUR SITE DOESN'T FUNCTION WELL ON CHROME. I SHOULDN'T HAVE TO DOWNLOAD ANOTHER BROWSER JUST TO BOOK A LESSON! I never got a video of the first lesson either which was part of the package. I would not refer anyone to this facility. read more

I've had close to 10 lessons with Mark and he is great. Very personable and easy going, caters to what you want to work on. I've definitely improved my game after playing for 10 yrs without taking a single lesson before finally deciding to take the plunge. My habit is to take away 2-3 things to work on, apply it afterward at the driving range and course and then come back to Mark to work on something else. I got introduced to Golfsmarts by a deal on Groupon and then have purchased a couple more packaged deals through the company's promotion - really tough to beat $20-$30 a lesson. It's an indoor location so you need to set your expectations and the space is a bit small but it serves its purpose. They have all the technology that you won't necessarily get with an outdoor lesson: video taping your swing, course simulator, ball speed/flight/impact measurement, etc. My only gripe is that the schedule books up fairly quickly so you typically have to reserve 3-4 weeks in advance. You may find something within a week or two if somebody drops but best to plan ahead. Good thing is you can reserve spots online and cancel 24 hrs prior if something comes up. Definitely recommend looking into these guys - especially Mark (haven't dealt with Leigh). read more

I noticed that all reviews of this business are pretty old. I wanted to give a fresh review of Leigh and the coaching style he has. 1. Leigh is an unprofessional coach. Our sessions normally started on time but Leigh always tried to get it done 10 minutes early. In a technical game like golf, having more time with a coach always helps. Once I confirmed with him that our session would indeed be 1 hour but he started giving an excuse that he needed to reach home early. Leigh is also very talkative and goes on spiels on how great his golf game. While I appreciate anecdotes to make the sessions fun, I don't like it when that gets in the way of the lesson. He even once mentioned to me out of the blue that his IQ is 146! More than me practicing my swing, I was sitting in front of him listening to him talk about his past. 2. Leigh was not helpful to me after a few sessions. The tips he gave me were not actionable. I was unable to replicate what he taught in my lessons on the golf course or on the range because he was unable to tell me how I should work on my game. 3. Inadequate facility His shop is a very small shop with a small net to hit golf balls into. You are only able to work on your long game. He has no provision for putting or short game. With the short game, you still hit into the net. In one session, I asked him to help me with 50-60-40 yard shot and the only thing he told me was to practice on the range. 4 Scheduling problems A huge problem with Leigh is that when booking he lessons, you do not get to know when your lessons will be scheduled. I was always at the mercy of Leigh scheduling the lessons according to his schedule. 5 Leigh is an unethical businessman After 3 lessons, I decided that I no longer wanted to take lessons him and asked for a refund. He was visibly disappointed but he assured me he would give me back 100 dollars (I had paid 200 for 6 lessons). After a couple of weeks, I called him and he picked up and again said that this will take time but assured me that he would give back my 100 dollars. Then after 4 weeks, I called him and he did not pick up. He did not reply to any of numerous emails. I would have preferred him to say that a refund is not possible rather than lie to me and keep me on the hook about this. I hope this review is helpful and I would not recommend Leigh for your golf lessons. There are great golf coaches at the numerous golf courses here in the Bay Area which would help you immensely with your game. read more

I'd give them a 4.5 rounded to a 5. Leigh and Mark are both excellent golf instructors. Their facility is in a warehouse with 3 mats hitting into a net about 10 feet away, so if you are going to work on your fade or your draw, you'll have to trust their advice and wait until you hit the range or course to see the actual results. They also have no putting green. That said, Leigh, a former California Tour professional, is a back to basics kind of instructor, and he is really good at explaining and fixing flaws in your swing so I'm sure he can explain those more difficult shots are well. The instant video feedback was great as multiple times in the lesson we stopped to look at video. He also copied the video to our USB drive. We took a very shy 7 year old girl who had never really swung a golf club before and Mark did a fabulous job of teaching her how to swing. She looked really good by the end. Leigh has posted some videos on his website google "Golf Smarts" to get a sense of his style. Suggestions: My half star deduction is for the lack of targets in front of the left and right tees. Leigh is all about the swing and not the results, but there is something to seeing if you are hitting the ball to the left or right and it's hard to tell hitting into a net. I think it'd be awesome if he had targets at different heights for the ideal angles for 5 iron, 7 iron, 9 iron, and PW. read more

I bought a package of lessons from Groupon and liked the lessons so much that I bought more. I felt like I made some improvement after my first lesson. Leigh has a lot of patience and teaches at your pace. I like that he uses video to show you your form and swing and you can take a copy of the videos home. The classes are at an indoor facility but he also will take a lesson to the course and will teach you etiquette and when to use which clubs. Leigh is very knowledgeable and has even taken the time to help me find a good set of clubs that would be suited for me. That was so helpful given that I'm new at golf and had no idea what to get and I appreciate the opinion of a person who isn't just trying to sell me expensive clubs. I initially started with GolfSmarts last year when I ran across one of those Groupon deals...hey, I had the time and figured I really had nothing to lose, so why not. From my first lesson, I found Leigh to be patient, instructive, and informative. Over the several lessons, with video feedback, and a playing lesson (on the course), he found that my confidence was lacking and based mostly on the older clubs I was using. To take advantage of the new technologies, I followed his advice and was out on the course getting used to my new clubs. Based on his advice, input and instruction, my rounds went from high 90's to 84-90 as of this week at Santa Teresa. Could I have done this on my own? No way. I find the operation headed by Leigh and his associate, Mark, to be well organized and providing those salient points that address the hurdles that we don't see in ourselves, but can be seen by savvy eyes. 5-STAR REVIEW ... but do not come here if you think you are going to become a golfer after 1, 2 or even 3 lessons. If you are ready to put in the time and work it takes to practice at home, at the range and on the course, then Leigh is your man. I played something that resembled golf prior to coming to see Leigh. I had a Happy Gilmore swing and decent set of clubs that I had to dust off. I bought a 3-pack initially as an investment and commitment to myself that, "yes, I want to actually learn how to play the right way". The first three lesson flew by -- Leigh's interactive, hands-on style, coupled with his video technology lends itself to a very instructive session (60 min). I knew exactly what my homework was every time I left his training facility... and I ACTUALLY PUT THE TIME IN. Leigh provides a 1:1 setting and is focused directly on the student during the session; with a keen eye for minor corrections and playing to the strength of the individual. I've since purchased additional packs from Leigh and see him on a regular basis to refine my game. A year ago I had no golf etiquette and my form was totally incorrect leaving me with inconsistent results; an average round for me was ~115/120. Today I have a very consistent swing, am becoming a chipping-machine and feel confident on even the most challenging public and private courses around. I can now easily shoot in the low 90s and more often am in the mid to high 80's with continued improvement. I owe the results to Leigh's coaching and my own mental readiness to put the work in to actually improve my game. *NOTE* Golf is very hard and there are several times early on that I was about to give up because I wasn't seeing consistency or results on the course. I kept going to the range and bought a net for my backyard to practice with. Leigh continued to help me and get over the mental aspect of the game. If you play golf once a month or less, I personally don't think you will get the results you want. There are no "fast tracks" to bypass the work and getting the feel of your clubs. However, once you COMMIT TO THE GAME and you stick with it (even when you lose 7 balls in one round) you will love it. I've been taking lessons from Leigh for ~8 months now (started w/ Groupon deal). I started as a complete newbie w/ bad habits, and my swing/game has improved tremendously since then - thanks to Leigh's insightful and patient instruction. Leigh is easy to work with and also very encouraging (esp important for someone new to the game). I really like the video recording and swing analysis during the lesson, it allows me to see my mistakes and what I should do instead (when compared side-by-side w/ a pro on the analysis software). The only reason I didn't give him 5-stars is I'm still waiting for the launch monitor to be installed... But all in all, Leigh's instruction has been very helpful and I'm sure it'll help you as well. p.s. I've had no issues what-so-ever w/ his scheduling system, I can book my lessons months in advance and get reminders via email the day before. read more

I'm a beginner, went to driving range a few times. Boss had been asking to play golf in the past few occasions, couldn't ignore him anymore :) It's about time to get serious about this, so I signed up a 6 lessons package with Golfsmarts. I like their online system, a little buggy, but it works for me. Got my first lesson with Mark today, he is very helpful to review my grips, posture, swing motion with their interactive video system. With the video, I found out I'm fatter than I thought... Alright, that's nothing to do with the skill, just an extra feature to help knowing more of yourself :) Overall experience it's great, and I decided to go with another 20 lessons with them to get myself up to the speed with this games. My goal is to get on the field the next time my boss is in town (mid Oct). Hopefully, I can post a successful experience by then. Stay tune! read more

My wife and I have been going to Leigh/Golf Smarts for almost 10 years. I shoot in the high 70s and my wife was on her high school boy's golf team, so we know a little bit about golf theory and technique. Leigh is consistently clear and appropriate with his suggestions. We are primarily working on my wife's game as she gets back into golf after taking a long break because of family activities. He's done a very nice job of pinpointing the 1 or 2 things she needs to work on to get back in the groove. His shop is small but quite adequate for general golf instruction. Land and office space is expensive in the valley and he has more than the minimum equipment needed to get the job done. We've recommended Golf Smarts to many of our golf friends and we will continue to do so. read more

At first I thought the price was too good to be true... Until my first lesson! Leigh is amazing and is very detail oriented which is fantastic. He reminds more of a coach than an instructor. He completely changed my swing after just two lessons. You can tell he's very passionate about the game and truly wants to help you get better. I am a professional athlete - abet in another sport - so I know the difference between someone who knows how to PLAY and someone who knows how to COACH. Leigh is great in both categories but I am especially impressed with his coaching skills. From the first lesson he keyed my weaknesses and started fixing my glitches at the same time keeping me positive by complimenting me on my strengths. I LOVE the "warehouse" venue as there are far fewer distractions that there would be on the course. There are not dozens of people gawking and making me self-conscious about whatever it is I am working on. The video helps to actually SEE what you are doing wrong and I love the way they can show you a side-by-side comparison with an actual Pro Golfer. I have been golfing for about two years now and with only FOUR lessons my NCGA Index has gone down TWO full strokes... woot woot! I have referred several friends and they are all pleased with the results from both Leigh and Mark. I just re-upped for another six-pack and I am looking forward to a continuing relationship with GolfSmarts for a long time to come. read more

I purchased the Groupon deal for myself and my husband. We thoroughly enjoyed our first lesson with Mark yesterday. As complete beginners, we greatly appreciated Mark's constructive critique of important aspects of the game - grip, posture and swing mechanics. It is very rare to find instructors who are so passionate about the game, and are genuinely interested in imparting knowledge to others. Mark was the perfect fit for us! The training facility is well-equipped with a variety of golf clubs for both men and women.We were able to try out a few to help us decide which equipment to invest in. Another great feature was the instructional software that pinpoints key metrics to improve your game. I would certainly recommend GolfSmarts to anybody interested in trying out golf! Leigh is an awesome coach! Easy to get along with, and provides great insights that deliver results. There may be 10 things wrong with my swing, but each lesson he'll prioritize the 1-2 high-impact things I should focus on. In the first 2 lessons, I went from inconsistently hitting fat and thin shots to getting consistent ball strike, which I had never been able to do before! He uses slow-motion video capture to analyze your swing, identify issues, recommend solutions, and explains the theory behind it very well. I found my love of golf through Leigh. Before coming to Leigh, I worked with 2 different golf instructors but with both all I got was frustration and was on the edge of giving up. Leigh's superpower is his ability to see through you on the first lesson, and he comes up with a plan that tailors to your need. I was completely clueless when I began to see Leigh, and my frustration comes from the countless things you need to pay attention to and remember in a swing. Golf is such a complex game and requires so much precision! Leigh made this very manageable by helping me set focus one thing at a time, which is exactly what I needed. Leigh's teaching style is awesome for me as a beginner! I bought the three-class package from Groupon and continued to work with him after. I can see how much I've improved in the past few weeks. Purchased the deal through amazon local thinking it would be a good deal but first of all you cant find an appointment because they block all the timings. I was finally able to get some time to go but guess what, the instructor (mark) did not show up and there was the main owner (Leigh) sitting on a computer desk cursing (yes really) and frustrated. Not the professional environment I had expected. During my brief conversation with Leigh, I did not find him to be helpful or courteous enough and he said he has a "child duty" and has to leave too. I mean wtf? This is all indoor in a dimly lit area in some old used warehouse type building which is not very clean either. There was no notification to let me know that the instructor was going to be a no-show. Total waste of time as I had to shuffle my meetings and get there on time during prime rush hour. Promptly asked Amazon for a refund as I would spend my money elsewhere so dont believe what all they put up on their website. read more

He's very helpful and definitely knows what he's talking about. improved my posture after just 5 swings and after the whole hour i was a lot better positioned. I've had about 8 lessons over the past year, mostly with Mark. Game has definitely improved. Both Leigh and Mark teach good fundamentals of the golf swing. Pros: Both instructors very knowledgable of the golf swing. Mark can diagnose flaws quickly and develop drills or practice swings to remediate. Easy to work with and will listen to your feedback. The taping and playback of your swing is useful. Cons: You get what you pay for. It's indoor so you won't see your ball flight. Probably not good for the beginner who wants to see ball flight. Technology offered in online ads is a little oversold. Leigh has been bombing Amazon and Groupon for months so hard to find an appt. sometimes. Tips: Bring a thumb drive so you don't have to chase them for a copy of your disk. Lower expectations a little since it is indoors. Plan ahead for lessons so you can have your lessons when you want. Wouldn't suggest them if your a beginner, but if you have been playing awhile and know the basics of the swing, then they are a good value for the price. read more

Appointments are currently 4 weeks out so, plan way ahead. Leigh and Mark are wonderful golf instructors. They are both patient and informative with their lessons. My golf game has vastly improved with the tips I have received this past year. Plus, I love the new Membership program. Four lessons per month is the best way for me to adjust my swing. They have kids lessons too. My 11 year old just started with lessons. So far I'm very happy with the instruction I am getting from Leigh. I came to him on the recommendation of a friend. I asked Leigh to critique my swing and then to break it down and rebuild it. His explanations and attention to details have drastically improved my game. I am hitting longer and straighter than ever and dropped from a 20+ handicap to a 15. There are no surprises here. After my first lesson from Leigh (in his facility with his equipment) I decided to book a package for my wife and I. She and I have VERY different learning styles and we both are eager to continue working with him on our games. Note: he WILL ask you to put in the work required to improve. I've had two lessons with Leigh Ochinero at Golf Smarts. I'm an experianced but intermediate ability golfer. Leigh has made an immediate improvement on my swing. He suggested only a few small changes that made a big difference. I need more practice to incorporate the changes fully in my game but I'm already hitting the ball farther. Leigh has a great approach to the game emphasizing efficiency of the golf swing. Leigh's communication via email has been timely with him responding within 24hrs of me sending him an email. I will definatly be arranging for more lessons with Leigh as I progress in my game. read more

They have the cool machines that analyze everything and then they give you advice that really helps. I am still not very good but at least now I know what I am supposed to be doing. Scheduling was initially difficult (as a Group On deal I am sure drives a lot of traffic) but once setup for an appointment with Mark, I felt very comfortable. We spoke briefly about how I played and what I hoped to achieve. Rather than change my entire swing and game, Mark watched and tweaked my process to where I immediately felt a more fluid swing, more solid contact with the ball and better ball trajectory. We did small changes through my sessions and he also understood that too much change would change nothing. I have a way to go to get my game where I want it, but the few changes I made have taken 10 strokes off my game and my friends have even commented on my better play. read more
