Goldenrod Bakeries is one of my favorites places in Lincoln! I have been going for probably the last three years and always have a wonderful time. The shop is beautiful and put together with care, the staff is so friendly and personable and the owner even signed the Goldenrod Bakeries baking book my boyfriend got me as a present, as she happened to be in shop. The treats are delicious, full of flavor, fresh, and so many gluten free, dairy free, or vegan options that whatever you pick is a winner. Even if you pick something you've never tried before! The prices are practical considering the uniqueness of the items and the fact that you are supporting a local bakery. I also ordered my birthday cake from Goldenrod this year and was thrilled with how it turned out. I was even able to slice the cake and save the rest of it in my freezer to eat when I felt like. Take it out of the freezer to sit for one hour and it was just like I picked it up that morning! 5/5 stars, if you haven't been, give it a try yourself! Maybe the worst bakery in the entire state. The prices are extremely high. Are they baking with gold? HP printer ink? Just dry and tasteless. Not at all what I expected. If I wanted dry and tasteless, I'd go to Russ' and at least save some money. My biggest concern is that this bakery is NOT net zero carbon. Planet Earth is dying from global warming. Stepped into this corner bakery while roaming Lincoln, and instantly wanted to try everything. So many options (gluten/dairy free options too)...from cakes and cobblers to cookies, rolls and bars, this place has something for everyone. The inside is very light and open, with a few tables for seating, and a small area for kids to play, with is awesome for parents. Also, a coffee shop next door for a great pairing! I would definitely say Goldenrod has more options than the average bakery, and their flavors are very unique (lemon/cardamom, rubarb, etc). The peach coffee cake I ordered was good but I probably would stick with their cookies next time I go, and there will be a next time. The confetti cookie was incredible, sweet but not overpowering, with a nice soft but not fake texture. Definitely recommended the cookies! read more

I am gluten free and moved here from a very large city that had tons of GF options... to Lincoln that has like none haha! I was overjoyed to find this place. When we first moved here we tried to go once a month, because people GLUTEN FREE CINNAMON ROLLS. I mean those take at least 3 hours to make yourself! Anyways. We haven't been back in about 4 months... when I think about cinnamon rolls, I crave them believe me but Goldenrod missed the mark. Everything there is SO SWEET. I can't handle it. On many of their items, it's like the colors and photos make them look like they're bursting with flavor, but really it's just an overpowering sugar taste. I want my cinnamon roll to be a buttery, cinnamon, icy taste. And these I can't taste the cinnamon. It's like eating frosted dough. Very underwhelming. The macarons... I like them but even those, only the fruity cereal one actually tastes like fruity cereal, the other flavors just taste like sugar. Our family got some last time and we each got a different flavor from our pick up order but we didn't know which flavors so we all took a bite and said "tell me which flavor you got!" We couldn't tell..... they just tasted like sugar. The brownie was good. Very chocolately. Which was a relief, but like I don't want to make the drive for a brownie that I could make myself. I wish that they honed in on the flavors more, and less on the straight sugar. And rest assured, I have a sweet tooth. But even this is too sweet for me. The only complaint I have about the macarons is that some of the flavors are very subtle...I tried a lemon lavender one last week that tasted good but I couldn't discern any lemon or lavender flavor at all. All the other pastries I've had have wowed me. I live in Omaha but any time I'm in Lincoln, I make it a point to stop by and pick up a few things. As a GF girl, I can't explain how grateful I am to have a place that sells mostly GF treats! Usually pastry shops will have one or two GF options but I have a hard time deciding what to get here! And everything is high quality, no odd textures (which is a major feat!) and tastes divine. I love the Nebraska inspired name and the fact that it's an all female staff. Girl power! I wanted to love this place. It's cute- the shop and baked goods are photograph worthy. I have bought a variety of treats to try out from here, including an $18 loaf of banana bread, cookies, and cookie sandwiches. I loved the pink boxes, but it ends there for me. This stuff is not good. I thought I may have gone on a bad day when I bought my first set of treats. So I tried it again. Then again. Each time, the deserts were bad. They were so cute and yet so bad, so eating them made me sad. I almost started crying, thinking, "I live in Lincoln and this is the best dessert I will ever eat here." I'm not dramatic, I just really love desserts and supporting local businesses. My cookie sandwiches looked vaguely like the ones on their website, but mine were 1 3/4" thick. The cookies are too thick and there is hardly any filling- they were difficult to bite into. Sadly, I found this place to be disappointing. In sum, overpriced, overrated, and underwhelming. It took me a good year after following this bakery and pastry shop on Instagram (@goldenrodpastries) to finally make a visit. They have a very creative way of displaying their pastries artfully through photography and it's very easy to want to check them out in person after perusing their Instagram a time or two. We do end up going to Lincoln quite often but typically on Sundays which is the one day out of the week they are closed. Seeing them in person did not disappoint. They are tucked amongst the cute shops on Prescott Avenue pretty much across the street from Union College. The area has changed a lot in the last five years, hosting more coffee shops, boutiques, and cute lifestyle places to shop and eat which better serve a younger college crowd. They have adorable striped awning and some fun kid friendly dining space inside complete with a neon sign and adorable apparel/lifestyle merchandise for purchase. The pastries themselves were wonderful. I selected six things to try on this first visit because there were so many things I wanted to try over the year. They specialize in regular pastries and even more so in gluten-free, dairy free and vegan pastries. Everything they make looks Instagram worthy and tastes that way too-it's not too sweet and many of the ingredients just seem very wholesome and fresh. There are very few locations in the Omaha area where I feel confident that I can order baked goods within my restricted diet (due to allergies), so goldenrod is where I get my fix. The store itself is so stinking cute and colorful. The staff was so friendly and patient as I chose all the sweets I wanted to try. I come here quite often when they first opened! I always try a handful of new things and use to spend so much money here weekly because this place is SO cute! I am always looking for the best pastry shops everywhere and anywhere so I was excited when they opened up!! After going here dozens of time, the quality of the stuff is a-ok. I usually get macarons, savory scones, cake slices, zucchini chocolate loaf, brownies, cinnamon rolls, crumble buns and cookies--you name it I had it! I mean if you're V/GF/dairy sensitive it's a GREAT alternative to fix your sweet tooth. Savory scones the 1 thing that I can honestly say I enjoy here. I know macaron is hard to make but this place makes it very dry like it has been in the freezer and left out to thaw, its hard and disintegrates, the filling -overly sweet, not really what a macaron should taste but they're great for pictures--there is maybe 3x when the macaron was actually the right texture maybe it was fresh that day and I got lucky? The cookie sandwiches always look amazing, so I bought one for my little sister and she threw it away after a bite & said it was like eating 5 day old cookies. My friend is vegan and makes vegan cookies/cakes all the time for me and it tasted as if it was the real deal, so I don't understand why a basic choc chip cookie would be difficult to make. For the most part it's pretty over hyped, due to their instagram worthy pics which is fantastic and so eye appeasing, but the taste/quality just isn't there for me. I really REALLY wanted to love this place but over the years after spending my money weekly...still the same results. I can honestly say this patisserie was just a foodies dream when it comes to desserts. I came across this place last Sunday morning when I came down for the Sunday Farmers Market. Beautiful shop with a clean and simple menu. The fact that It's a women driven business I was even more excited to try it out. Unfortunately we were running late and didn't stop by until today. I was bugging my husband to take me back since I leave back to California tomorrow. We stopped by and I was just soo excited to grab a slice of cake. I ordered the strawberry &raspberry layered cake and the Coconut Torte and I died and went to pastry heaven Both cakes were light and had the right amount of sweetness. Obsessed with the blackberry coulis sauce it had on top. It was beautiful and couldn't wait to dig in. My best friends birthday is on Sunday and she requested a cute heart shaped cake from this company. She originally reached out to the company on October 6th. They were originally emailing back and forth with her to fully understand what she wanted. Then she stopped receiving responses. She had emailed them twice and no response so she assumed they were busy but they had come to an agreement of what she wanted so she didn't think it was a problem! She called the day before pickup to confirm the price and the woman on the phone informed her that they didn't have an order from her. She also claimed that my friend hadn't reached back out to them... I personally saw the unanswered emails my friend sent. She has heard great things about this company and attempted to order a cake through them last year but they were too booked out. The macarons are. not. good. They either need to change their recipe or stop making these. The shells are all off - they are hard and puffy with air bubbles when they should be denser and chewier. They often taste stale. But they also taste like nothing much but sugar. I have bought these a few times over the past year hoping they would get better but they never do. I bought one of each of the 5 flavors they offered over the weekend and when my family sat down to eat them we struggled to determine what flavor they were. They kinda all tasted the same which was just sweet. I have had some pretty great things here. I love the cookie sandwiches and cheesecake and really appreciate that I can find gluten free items. I ordered a gluten free birthday cake for my mother and it was well-liked by all. First time customer, unfortunately not impressed. I wanted some blue ombré ocean like cupcakes for my daughters birthday. I emailed about a custom order, and did my best to explain what I wanted. They did not ask any clarifying questions, and never confirmed the flavors & styles they were going to make. I just paid an invoice for the number of cupcakes. When I opened the box back at home I was disappointed. The look & style of the cupcakes were something that I feel I could have achieved myself at home. When it came time to eat them just an hour later, they were VERY DRY and the chocolate hardly tasted different from the confetti flavor. They also did not use the berry flavor of frosting that I had requested, but I had said vanilla as backup (so there may have just been some miscommunication there). Over all I just was really disappointed to have splurged for professional cupcakes when the outcome was something I could have made myself, and possibly even have made better/fit my vision. read more

this is my third time ordering from here and it's always somewhat wrong and something is always weird. the first time, the cake was good but dry. the second time, same flavor as the first, the cake was SUPER dense and thick. the third time, the cake was dry and the frosting was straight butter. seriously the frosting was rock solid and felt like butter in my mouth. it also was supposed to be berry flavor and it had no flavor at all. plus, they never follow the order request instructions and kinda just free ball. i don't know, ive given them 3 chances and i think im just kinda done now. read more
