Ordered take out here and the food was on the bland side. I got: Steam Egg Custard, Prawns with Walnuts in Mayo, Eggplant Garlic Sauce, Assorted Vegetables Buddhist Style, Steamed Grass Carp, and Clams with Black Bean Sauce I appreciate their effort but a little more flavor wouldn't hurt anybody. Maybe sticking to the classic roast meats and poultry or most popular dishes is best!

This has become one of our go-to spots for authentic Chinese takeout. Pretty much anything you get here is legit and delicious. Last week we preordered a roast turkey for Thanksgiving at $8/lb. Unfortunately they didn't carve it for us (most restaurants don't) so it was a bit of a struggle and we had to reheat it but it was still good!

I don't know why people have bad reviews about Golden Z because it's sooo good. It's a local spot and you don't expect it to be gorgeous inside - just a mom and pops shop. The food is always good and my favorite is their chicken. it's $8 a box and you can't beat it. they asked me if I wanted to get just the rest of the chicken in my box for a few more bucks so I said yes of course. Call in if you don't want to wait but the orders are still pretty fast.

As quintessential of an inexpensive, quick service, no-frills Cantonese restaurant as it gets. Golden Z has been a staple on the stretch of Avenue U's Chinatown for many years. Conveniently located just 1 block west of the Avenue U Q train station, I've been guilty on more than one occasion of hopping off the train just to satisfy my takeout rice box craving and then hopping right back on it to enjoy it at home. Some might know them as a different name because if you happen to catch their awning at jusssst the right angle in the evening, you'll notice the name "Triple Z" displayed, but then disappear at another angle, as though they purposely created a lenticular awning. I assure you they just pasted Golden Z over the old name. But to more important matters, their food! Out of all of the Chinese restaurants on Avenue U (and I've been to all of them at one point in time), Golden Z has always been to my go to spot for Cantonese rice boxes and, occasionally, congee and noodle dishes. Yes, mostly everything is fantastic, but my absolute must get and something that I could never resist is the FATTY roast pork and roast pig over rice here. The plate or rice box, depending on if you're dining in or taking out, always comes with a hefty amount of white rice and a side of boiled cabbage. If you're dining in, might I also recommend to throw in the occasional fried egg? You'll give me many thanks later on that pointer. You can add the fried egg when taking out as well, but it's just better when fresh. Also, do make a point to ask for FATTY meat, which as any prideful carnivore knows, is so much juicier, flavorful and, what feels like, wrongfully more delicious than lean meat. Lean meat is just honestly no fun to painfully chew through and try to get some flavor out of, so do your jaw and taste buds the favor of avoiding it when ordering the rice box. Besides the roast pork and roast pig over rice, their rice boxes from the kitchen are excellent too - beef and peas over rice, beef and tomato over rice, curry beef over rice, satay beef over rice, creamy corn over rice, filet fish over rice, etc, etc, etc. Their all good, but you'll just have to wait a bit if you order any of these, so call it in ahead of time if you can. Golden Z is not without some missteps though. One thing I have ordered and would avoid going forward is the pan fried noodles here. Don't get me wrong, I loveeeee pan fried noodles, but some restaurants get it right and some just don't. Golden Z is on the wrong side of that discussion. The noodles aren't very crispy and are actually quite soggy. In addition, flavor-wise, the sauce doesn't taste good. It might have something to do with the noodles, but the combination here has never worked. Despite the pan fried noodles being a no go, do come here for the rice boxes. The portions are huge and they satisfy my craving every single time. The fatty roast pork and roast pig plate is THE item to order, but if you're not into pork, they have more than enough items on their menu to make your head spin.

A old school hole in the wall. Makes pretty good Cantonese dishes. At lunchtime you can stuff yourself silly with the lunch specials for only $5-7. Lots of homey, old-fashioned comfort dishes like beef with tomato over rice, and fish filet with bitter melon. Wow, they even have squid with sour cabbage over rice. I haven't had that since I was a little kid. One of the ultimate comfort foods is congee $5. They have that here too. Even with frog legs for $7. An all-time favorite is getting roasted meats over rice. The roast duck is pretty good, but I find the soy sauce chicken a bit dry. They give you a very generous portion of meat with a side of veggies. All for under $7. Two more old home-style dishes are Steamed minced pork with salted fish, also Steamed tri-egg custard with minced pork. Very few places make these dishes. There is complimentary soup before the meal. The main language spoken here Cantonese but they also speak some English. Final note: It's not the best Cantonese food but its quick and decent enough to be good!

    Cockroach in General Tso's Chicken
    Michael B.

Got this place with my whole office and I was more than halfway through my General Tso's when a dead cockroach floated up. On taking the food back, we were told we were wrong, they don't have cockroaches and it must have been something else like a dried shrimp. The picture is part of the review, it is not a shrimp. We ended up getting a refund, but not before they asked if we wanted something else instead. I wasn't about to gamble on another dish based on their track record, but you have to respect the hustle in trying to avoid a refund. Would have left zero stars if possible.

Beef w Chinese broccoli, Singapore, salt pepper squid, stewed lamb, Peking pork chops
    Elisa H.

They really should've gotten 0 stars being that they were so ill-prepared that we had to wait 1 extra hour for our order. We sat there like idiots after our order was placed only to realize 1 hour later that they'd totally forgotten our order. In fact they'd forgotten so many people that we couldn't even be mad because we were all hungry, wet (rainy outside) and just really want our food for Mother's Day. Eventually we made it out with our food. The lamb stew was undercooked and tofu skin still tough. The salt and pepper squid was overly salty. The Peking pork chop was requisite. And the other dishes nothing special but if u like Singapore- this is one place that doesn't dry out the shrimp. At $85 for 5 dishes- averaging $15.60 per dish- this was hardly a bargain. Honestly, if there were more choices on the Avenue U strip we'd prolly never come here again.

Not sure if normal but we bought 1 LB of Cha Siu, pretty standard stuff. However, it wasn't until we got home and opening the box did we notice the color and texture looked really off. It seemed old and stale. The texture was almost like beef jerky and it did not have much taste. It was really disappointing and I did not enjoy or want to leave this review. To be fair, the manager/owner did offer us refund or exchange if we brought it back to them, but we live far away and can not make the roundtrip there. (Extra star for that) We tried to eat it but it is textured like dry beef jerky and tastes nothing like cha siu. It's like old stale meat.

the worst food ever , I don't even know what this place sells but this is not cook food is more like a poultry shop. I went in to ask for some fried chicken to have for dinner and when I got home and open up the container the whole chicken was raw, I try to take a bite from a piece and it was so hard and the taste of raw meet was horrible, hard to shew .waited for the next day to call , So I called and asked for a refund. Since it was a long commute from brooklyn to north jersey . So I called them and trying to explain the situation the lady hang up on me the first time and called a second time and asked to speak to a manger or the owner and they say it wasn't there so they transfer me with a guy and xplained what was the situation so I asked for the money back and that I wanted to get the same chicken but well done and he wasn't sure giving back both so after some argument he finally said that he'll be given the money and the chicken the 2 days after so when I get to the place and I greeted and trying explaining why I was there she started to scream and the look in her face said it all .shes the cashier lady was so mean and rood and disrespectful not to mention the rest of the crew they were mad screaming and cursing in their language like crazy . So i had to ask for my money back and they weren't nice same amount of chicken but cook , but for some reason they ended up giving a much worse raw chicken as it shows in the picture I added. So had to take that raw chicken again and my money back cause I came all the way from Jersey and just wasted more money on transit but such a horrible experience with people so unprofessional and no manners they were all screaming all over the place from the youngest to the oldest . And that lady cashier should go and find something else to do cause she has no talent to be in the front she needs a husband desperately cause she was so mad when it was their fault. So people I will definitely not recommend this place in the entire planet . WORST PLACE EVER! EVER! Zero start if was an option.

Sautéed Mustard Greens (炒芥菜): Well-executed. Lots of ginger to nuance the taste of the mustard greens.

Golden Z is a smallish neighborhood restaurant specializing in Cantonese meats and noodles. We generally choose Golden Z over Season Restaurant across the street when we want to avoid weekend dim sum crowds. The portions here are tasty, large, and the prices reasonable. Food: OK (3.5 of 5). Very Good, actually, but very salty. Most of the food that we've had at Golden Z is well-executed but the restaurant seems to use salt a little too liberally to both enhance and ameliorate different flavors. For example, you'll notice the natural bitterness in bitter melon and in mustard greens less at Golden Z than at other places, because of the salt. The latter dish does have ginger to further nuance the taste of the mustard greens. Service and Atmosphere: OK (3 of 5). Service is friendly and prompt. Tea is complimentary. Complimentary daily soup (lai tong; 例湯) during lunch -- a pork-bone based soup that is flavorful, though noticeably salty. There is one small unisex bathroom that is adequately clean but could be better maintained. Value: Very Good (4 of 5). Overall: Good (3.5 of 5).

I would like to thank Jonathan T. for introducing me to this place. I don't think I've ever been out in this neighborhood in my life so the odds of my being here regularly are incredibly slim. But after a few beers at Coney Island brewery we were both starving and I was under a very limited budget. Insert - "I know a place that serves Chinese food for like $5". Really it's Cantonese Chinese and I rarely have tried that or legit hole in the wall mom and pop old school chinese places. But he was right. You can get a full meal here for $5.50. Oddly most of their americanized dishes are twice as expensive. I thought about noodles and those were like $8-10. Egg rolls - like $5 for two of them. Dumplings - higher than normal (you get the picture). But if you order any of their delicious meats and treats over white rice - $5.50-6.50. They first bring out a bowl of some kind of fragrant broth with chinese cabbage I think and complimentary salted peanuts and a pot of tea. If my $5.50 meal starts off with free food, this has already become a huge winner for me. I went with shrimp and some kind of egg sauce and I think my friend got beef intestines with peppers? I tried it. It wasn't actually too bad. It just tasted like fatty beef. The shrimp and egg sauce was a little too runny for me and bland but they give a copious amount of food for the value and I went home with leftovers. So really my meal was $2.75, hotdog. The desert they also gave us in the end was a really nice touch. However, I personally thought it was disgusting. It tasted like beans and tapioca and fructose corn syrup and I was having none of that. But I totally appreciated the gesture from the kind restaurant people.

The food was very fairly priced and the portions were huge. We got the pork soup dumplings, pork fried rice, szechuan chicken (which came with white rice), and pad see ew (which though not listed comes with pork, chicken, and shrimp). Everything was solid, but our favorite was the fried rice which had a ton of flavor. I liked the veggies that were in the chicken dish but there were just way too many of them compared to the chicken and I wasn't crazy about the sauce. The pad see ew wasn't made the traditional way I've had it with soy sauce and oyster sauce. It had some sort of orange sauce that tasted closer to a sweet and sour. It wasn't bad it was just not what I was hoping for. The soup dumplings were solid, no complaints there. And the fried rice was great, lots of flavor. Overall, I liked this place especially for the price but I'd probably order different things if I went back.

I found parking down the block and walked over to the restaurant. It seems like more of a delivery spot because there was no one inside sitting at any of the 5 tables. It's a fairly good size space, very simply decorated, mixed with a cool wall resembling a curio cabinet of treasures. I chose a spot in the middle and went to the restroom which was clean and simple. I noticed there were a lot of takeout orders, from delivery services to local folks picking up their regular dinner. I looked over the menu and decided on salt and pepper wings and an order of shrimp. Fried Rice came out first and it was delicious. I even tasted a hint of salted egg yolk mixed into the egg mixture friefried up with the rice that signature crispiness with the little saltiness.... fantastic. The salt and pepper wings were different than the ones i'm accustomed to though the flavor was amazing. It didn't have the fried garlic, peppers, chilis, and onions that i'm accustomed to being in the dish. They were still flavorful, juicy and crisp and I could tell they cooked them fresh. That was much appreciated. I ended up taking half of my food home because I was stuffed.Thank you Msm Ellen and the Crown Garden crew for a tasty solo dinner.

There was nothing that I ordered that needed ketchup. Nothing. There wasn't even soy sauce in the bag. Then had the unmitigated gall to charge $22 for the salt baked shrimp and told me I had to pay $5 extra to substitute the lo mein for white rice. Who is eating white rice with shrimp? Girl bye. I'm not paying almost $30 for one meal from a hood Chinese spot. If there's no heat in your establishment, your prices need to be in lowercase. If it looks like you might catch staph in your establishment, your prices need not to be so loud. I also believe they overcharged me. They did have a sign saying that the prices went up, but I think they may have been too cheap to print out a new menu if that was the case. I was going off of what they had on the wall for the general public. So as I stated, I ordered crab Rangoon ($7, allegedly), honey wings ($7, allegedly), a shrimp egg roll ($2, allegedly), spare rib tips with fried rice ($12, allegedly). My total was $31. My assumption is they probably charged me extra for pork fried rice, which I didn't ask him for. I know for a fact they are not charging tax because there's no way that you're forcing people to pay in cash while also charging them for taxes that you don't pay. The crab Rangoon was actually pretty decent even though I didn't have the sauce that comes with it. The honey wings were OK. They actually taste more like honey BBQ. I prefer C&Y honey wings. It's real honey and stay hot for an hour due to the way honey maintains heat. I also don't appreciate when these spots chop up a wing and call it two wings. 1 wing is the entire thing. STINGY. The spare rib tips I don't like and neither do I like their pork fried rice. The rice is a bit bland and I don't like those large spare rib tips. I prefer the boneless spare rib tips that C&Y has. A shrimp roll is a shrimp roll is a shrimp roll. It wasn't too bad and it was actually pretty happy. The shrimp was a little bit larger than those baby shrimp that they normally stuff in shrimp rolls. Their pricing is on par with C&Y yet I don't have no issues paying what they ask and their food is good aside from their lo mein. They are not stingy and have pretty decent customer service unlike the guy who took my order here who paused my order to take another order over the phone and tend to the person behind me. This is what I get for cheating on my spot and being lazy when they both were far af.
