I ordered the stuffed cabbage. I wanted a baked potato for one of the sides, but they were out of them, so I got spaghetti instead. (An unusual choice, in my opinion.) It tasted like they used cheap canned sauce; it reminded me of the canned spaghetti we had sometimes as kids. I also had the applesauce which was ok, but I wish it had been unsweetened. The stuffed cabbage was ok; certainly not as good as my great aunt used to make, but not bad. Although, it was a bit spicy for me. I don't remember what my sister had, but I do remember that she wasn't very impressed with it. Ok history lesson! the building used to be McDades Restaurant a German/Irish establishment that used have a small but nice selection of usual German fare that I loved dining there. and Golden Goblet was further down the road on Golden Mile Hwy. Fast forward the Mcdade family retired a while ago and The GG took over this location under their own name. The decor was dark and rather dated with something of a nautical theme (I'm guessing because of the "famous" fish sandwich they offer) The dining room has an adjoining party/function room and the bar and kitchen occupying the other side. Over 10 years ago, I went there once during lent, for their so called "Famous Fish Sandwich" well to me, a self declared "Afish'n'ado" being British from the land of Fish'n'chips, it wasn't that "famous" imho. I think it must be a self declared title, just like the Dallas Cowboys are referred to as "America's Team" Anyhoo 10+ years on, I didn't go this time for another try at a fish sandwich, no ...I went there because I found out that they we're continuing offering the alternative German menu inherited from McDades, as a separate Oktoberfest menu. Don't know if it has been offered in prior years or not. Tried the "German Sampler" which used be my favourite from the McDades era, when it was called the "Heidelberg Platter". This new iteration is similar from what I remembered... an oval plate filled with a variety of Knockwurst and Bratwurst, Sauerbraten, Pork roast, with four wonderful sides of Potato pancake, German potato salad, good portions of Sauerkraut and also red cabbage. Whilst not wow, it was flavorful and still very good and quite authentic and reasonably priced for the amount of food you get. Our server was by herself the whole night and a little harrowed understandably, by having to serve around 10 covers at the same time, but whilst a little discombobulated at times, she still managed very well and was courteous throughout. I think she was quite new to the Oktoberfest menu as despite what the printed German menu said, she interpreted the German sampler as an "either or" on the sides it came with, which is not the case, you "get it all" on the same plate and the kitchen thankfully knew that). My wife had a full Sauerbraten entree which she liked and I had her leftovers the next day. Gravy was nice combo of sweet and sour and peppery with cinnamon or cloves We also had an order of fried zucchini which was quite good for the amount you get and the thick marinara it came with, though was a little on the greasy side. (We shouldn't have ordered it, purely down to our normal greed and craving zucchini and forgetting how much food you get for the main meal but at least there were leftovers to enjoy!) Had a pint of Oktoberfest beer which sadly was flat. Summing up I want to go back before Oktoberfest ends to try their selection of veal entrees, or just get the sampler again. Also as a footnote, while I was there, a neighboring table got a fried fish dinner and from the look, the fish was thin and the breading quite dark indicating that it was either overdone, or they haven't changed the oil in the fryer in quite a while, so based on my observation, will continue to hold off ordering a 'so so' fish sandwich after all these years. The menu was an old paper takeout menu. The steak & cheese hoagie was small & bland, served with chips from bag and pickle spear. They wouldn't let me order in the restaurant, told me I had to order at the bar, so I went into the smoke filled bar to order my food.. the lady was nice but had a lit cigarette constantly burning about a foot away from me.. I ordered my food, she told me 20 minutes.. I couldn't take the smell so I said I'll be back in 20. 20 minutes later I come back to find out they forgot to put my order in.. 10 minutes later I'm freezing in the "vestibule" waiting for my order, I can smell cigarettes on my clothes as I wait, I let the lady know that I'll never be back and their policy about ordering is absolutely terrible read more

We will not be coming back. Had the "famous" fish sandwich, which was served on stale bread and been fried in way-overdue-to-be-changed oil. It tasted like oil, the tarter sauce didn't help much. Others at my table had chicken fingers which also had no taste, an Italian Hoagie which tasted fine and a Cheeseburger which was also fine. The decor is considerably outdated. Staff was just okay. For 4 people to eat lunch, the bill came to $50+ with tip. In conclusion, there are plenty of places to eat nearby with better food for the price. read more

Came specifically for the 'award winning' fish. It was basic fried fish, honestly very little flavor. The hush puppies w sauce were very good. Service was so bad. It was 20 min before our drink order was taken. It really could not have been much slower without walking out. There was more than 30 min between our hush puppies arrived and our sandwiches arrived. We saw several families in the back room looking for a waitress. By late march the Christmas garland could have been taken down. So - we would skip it next time. This is a hole in the wall type of cafe. The food was average the service was average. The flooring had cracks and large pieces missing so you could see the underlying co Crete and brick. We sat for about 8-10 mins before our table was approached by the wait staff as the sign says seat yourself. We did however there was no one present. I ordered a salad which is hard to screw up. We came to in for lunch on a Sunday at 12:30. There were 4 of us. On Sunday they appear to only have a very limited menu. Waitress was very nice and apologized and said they were short staffed that day. This may have been the reason the kitchen was very very slow with our order. If you have a family remember that the weekend menu is very limited only burgers and a few sandwich type items. Our appetizer was forgotten and they did take it off the bill. "Award winning fish" You must have to specifically ask for the award winning fish, because what I ate from this place was probably the worst fish sandwich I've ever had. On top of that, when I arrived after the "about 20 minute cook time", I then waiting in the bar for over a half hour for my food, because even though they won't admit it, they forgot to start cooking my order. To top all of that off, they gave no tartar sauce, when I specifically asked, as well as no dressing for a salad, which I again specifically asked for. Let's be real, who doesn't give dressing for a salad? This restaurant needs to remove their award winning fish sign, and stop luring customers in on lies. It was about 11:45am and we stopped in for lunch and there were about 6 men sitting at the bar.. you can tell they're regulars who all know eachother, and this is just another stop in their daily routine. The only reason I mention that is because, as someone who ISN'T a regular, walking in to that can be intimidating. You walk in, not sure of where you're even going, and everyone just stops and stares at you. Honestly, that's basically where the uncomfort ended. They don't mean any harm, it just is what it is. We mentioned to the bar tender that we were wanting to get lunch but the dining room doors were locked, and she apologized and took us to the dining room instead (apparently the dining room opens at 12, and they hadn't unlocked the doors yet - no big deal). The bar is a smoking area, so if that bothers you, beware. The dining room, however, is non-smoking. It's a very small area, with 3 booths and maybe 6 tables that seat 4 each. The decor is kind of outdated and is a nautical theme (..?), and the music matches the not-recently-updated atmosphere. As long as all of that doesnt matter to you, this place is pretty good! It's your typical little local, "caters mostly to regulars" establishment (or so it seems, anyway), but truthefully, the food is good and the people are friendly. I tried their "Award Winning" fish sandwich, and it was a good fish sandwich, but for the price, I think I'd opt to go elsewhere for something so readily available just about anywhere. They offer it in 3 different sizes - Small, Medium, & X-Large - all for different prices, and it comes totally plain and with no sides. You can add a side for $3, and then every topping you add is .50. So by the time I had it the way I wanted, I was paying around $13 for a fish sandwich at lunch time, when I could have had the same thing (or better) elsewhere for cheaper. I'm not saying not to try it, but I may be saying to try something else.. We did order the "Bang Bang Shrimp" to start with, and those were legit! It's not a big portion, but they were so good! My husband ordered the steak sub which he seemed to enjoy - it looked pretty good to me! Anyway, the service was prompt and friendly, and the prices, while I wouldn't say were great, weren't too bad. On the first Friday of Lent, my husband picked up 2 fish meals. The pricing was wrong on our order, so I called the next day and Candy, the owner, invited us in for a lunch on her! We could not believe her offer and desire to please her customers. We enjoyed a delicious lunch and enjoyed good service too! Had dinner with 5 other people Wednesday evening. Arrived to many dirty, unserviceable tables. Waited for 10 minutes while tables were cleaned. Food is mediocre at best. The fish was ordered by 3 and they seemed to like it, I've had better many other places. I ordered the Goblet burger, it would have been excellent had it been served on a better quality bun, like pretzel, artisan, Kaiser, etc. Wait staff very disorganized, mixed up orders, checks, drinks, etc. If they had been busy you could excuse a little, but they weren't. Decor is really outdated and lighting is very poor, I had to use flashlight on phone to read menu and check. Truly doubt I will return, many other restaurants in area that are much better. read more

Excellent Reuben sandwich and a very good fish sandwich. They have a dining room that is separate from the bar and no smoking is permitted in the dining room Avoid the bar which is full of regulars. And you will smell like smoke in its small confines. But you can DINE in the dining room and order an adult beverage with your meal if you desire. I rate the food above average. BUT only 2 stars will be awarded because the place is kinda pricey considering that NO sides are included with your sandwich. Want fries with that? You'll pay extra. Had lunch there today had a cup of split pea with ham, and a tuna cobb salad. Soup was delicious so hearty and thick, definitely homemade. I was expecting canned tuna on my salad, wrong! I was served a tuna steak cooked medium rare, so unexpected but so good. Now that the road work is done I'll be back, staff is so nice, even the owner asked how we liked our meal. My wife and I recently moved to the area and were looking for some good fried fish - the sign out front said "award winning" so we gave it a try and were we happy that we did! The service was excellent, and the fish was fantastic, as were the jumbo clams and lobster mac and cheese and onion rings. We had enough food leftover for another meal for both of us. We have been back twice since then and every time the service was great - very friendly. Two things from reading other reviews: 1) It is a tad pricey, but look how much quality food you get! 2) Yes, the bar is loud, smokey and annoying - so don't eat in the bar.
