Home of the famous strawberry cake, which we have enjoyed at many a party, and decided to visit its home. They have a very welcoming bakery with friendly staff and a glass case full of delightful goodies, both sweet and savory. Unfortunately, they were sold out of steam buns when we visited, so we'll definitely be coming back to try those. Fortunately, we are the home of several sweet tooths, so we did not leave empty handed: we opted for a slice of the white chocolate mousse cake (they also have a raspberry which is going to be a future try!) and several of the mini cheesecakes. I feel sad and disappointed. Our family has chosen the strawberry kiwi cake as our celebration cake for over 12 years. Yesterday's purchase was pure disappointment. The cream icing we loved tasted artificial and resembled the kind grocery stores use. The center strawberry filling seemed like 1 single strawberry was used for the entire cake. The cake had an odd spongey texture and was not as we have enjoyed in the past. I fear the popularity of this cake has caused the bakery to cut corners to keep up with demand. I have been living in Columbus for more than 7 years and I just found this hidden gem. This little bakery is a small space with a walk up counter where you can place your order. Sadly there aren't any chairs or tables to sit since it is a smaller bakery. The lady behind the counter was quick and efficient. The cake here is excellent, one of my favorite cakes is the strawberry cake. My friend ordered a mocha cake which was perfect to her liking since it wasn't too sweet. They provide a mix of bakery goods including a varity of cake slices, fruit tarts, cream puffs, tiramisu, and cookies. They also include a small selection of savory items. Everything tastes fantastic! The semi sweet cake slices were perfect, with the right light whipped frosting and the fresh strawberries and kiwi. The famous strawberry cake they sell at Golden Delight is a popular style of cake in a lot of Asian countries. The shop is small, simple, and too the point. Daily options are on display in the case, and there's a cooler with drinks. It's a no fuss kind of bakery; you place your order, get your food with friendly service, and then you leave. This isn't really the kind of place to hang out with a friend over coffee and cake and catch up. I naturally had to order a slice of the fresh strawberry cake and it absolutely lived up to my expectations. The cake was spongy, light, just the right amount of sweet, not at all dry, and delicious. The icing is of the whipped variety, which happens to my favorite. Over all this is a great freaking cake. Especially if you're looking for something that isn't too heavy or sweet. I was in the neighborhood of this shop and was so very glad I stopped in. It had been way too long. For years, their strawberry cake has been a Columbus favorite and also one of mine. I ordered a couple slices, which is an awesome offering they have if you don't need a whole cake or are trying to save your pennies. The price is very affordable. The flavor persists to be spot on. These cakes have been my 'bring a desert' go-to for almost every conceivable celebration or social function for work or personal needs for almost ten years. Word of mouth about Golden Delight is relatively buckshot in execution - people either know about it and have for ages or they don't at all. I evangelize it as much as possible myself, but I get the sneaking suspicion some folks keep this one close to the vest and I don't honestly blame them. How often can you get a cake as iconically special as they stuff they put out comparative to, say, something off the rack at Kroger? Everyone here is always super friendly, and they bend over backwards to add messages or answer questions. I honestly can't speak to any of the complaints in that area. You get a feel for what you're walking into the minute you visit this place, and all the time's afterward. Come during normal operating hours. Don't ask for anything too outlandish message wise. Don't get me wrong: Golden Delight Bakery makes a damn good cake (or at least a damn good fresh strawberry cake). However, an aspect of the store itself made a negative impact on me, as did an aspect of the cake I tried- the aforementioned strawberry cake. While Golden Delight is like other Asian bakeries I've been to around town- small, sparse, and very, very white- one of the first things I noticed when I walked in was the dust. It's not that the whole place was riddled with it, either, it was just that the display cakes on the top of the display case were so dusty as to appear a dark gray bordering on brown. It was kind of filthy and made the model cakes look inedible. To the bakery's credit, the models protected by the case looked very nice and quite impressive. The bakery serves the usual cakes and delights as well as Asian items such as steamed pork buns. As I've said, I tried the fresh strawberry cake. This was a delicious, delicious, delicious cake. The strawberries tasted fresh and the cake was moist and airy. The real knockout punch was the frosting, though, which was more a whipped topping than an icing- much more to my taste than stiff cake icing. However, I had one problem with the strawberry cake. It had kiwis in it- no problem at all in theory, as I love kiwis more than almost any other fruit- but all the slices of kiwi had the rind on. Now maybe the kiwi rind is edible and I'm missing out on something great, but I don't play that. I had to stop and peel every thin slice of kiwi I came across- and if there's one thing I hate while eating, it's chores (which is one reason I don't eat lobster). So, I'm torn on Golden Delight. Rude rude rude owner. The worst customer service I have ever experienced. The lady was rude the moment we walked in and not willing to help. She kept cutting me off when I asked a question and said NO WE CAN'T DO THAT before I even finished my question and when I want to finish my question she would say I ALREADY TOLD YOU WE CAN'T DO THAT. As I type my review for Golden Delight, I try to control the amount of drool that weighs down (and cascades off) my lower lip. After all, what's sold here is of the variety back home that my parents get for me on my birthday! This bakery has a modest set-up, but as you can see from the photos that accompany this page, it features an abundance of tasty (and often pastel-colored) Asian goods. Among the goodies on display are small baked buns, steamed buns, sweet toasts, cookies, cream puffs, pudding cakes, cheese cakes, pandan cakes, Filipino rice cakes, and--my favorite--cake rolls! The slices of mocha cake roll that I bought are flavorful but not to excess, and upon my next visit, I will try the green tea cookies and a slice of the signature strawberry cake. Also, I'm so thrilled that I can directly take the #18 COTA bus to the strip mall where this little shop resides! Now, I deduct one star off my rating only because the service was quite slow to accommodate a rapidly growing queue. Their cakes are soft, light, and fluffy. The frosting has a unique taste to it...it's not too sweet and just right. My favorite is their famous strawberry cake. The "Fresh Strawberry Cake" is a favorite of a co-worker so I ordered one from here on a Wednesday for a Friday pick-up. She confirmed twice that I wanted to pick-up from the Bethel location and wasn't trying to reach the Gahanna location. The quarter sheetcake feeds 12 - 15 (or 20 if small pieces) and is $27. When I arrived at the bakery I found out there are round versions (10 inches on down) for less. You can even buy individual slices. The cake was delicous! My co-worker is diabetic and the lack of buttercream frosting makes it much friendlier on his diet. I don't know if it's whipped cream with sugar but it doesn't slide off the cake after it warms up. They have a coupon in the Entertainment Book each year and they have a punch card for being a frequent cake buyer. read more
