Came to Gold Bean while waiting for my boyfriend who was in Hayward at an appt. Saw this place on IG and decided to make the 38 min drive to try it out. Super excited! Parking was an issue but that's not the cafe's fault. Finally found a spot and the excitement was building! Got inside and realized there's no human to order with.. Just 2 kiosks. Ok. Whatever. I was able to ask a barista about which drinks were recommended since it was my first time. The extremely nice barista told me her recommendation for the Iced dulce de leche latte so I decided to go with that. I added the pink foam (was told it was a vanilla flavor). Waited a good amount of time and got my latte. Upon my 1st sip, I couldn't believe how sweet it was.. Like pure caramel.. So much that it was warm and this was an iced drink if that even makes sense. I tried to stir it around but it was just a sugary mess. There a zero taste of coffee. Like did they forget the espresso?! I was highly disappointed. Not only because of the hype on IG but also because I came from so far! I stopped at whole Foods on my way back to Hayward and bought a can of black unsweetened coffee to try and cut the sweetness. It helped a tiny bit but it just was gross if I'm being honest. So I threw it away. I guess you win some and you lose some in the world of cafes but for a $9 cup of coffee, this isn't somewhere that I'd return to! The employees were nice enough but the lack of interaction is just not my favorite either. Maybe this is the future of all businesses but I sure hope not and I guess it makes me glad I was born when I was.. I miss the days of actual human interaction and conversation while ordering. I tried their sesame lox bagel and it was very yummy! The lox was fresh, and went well with their cream cheese and onions. The bagel was also pretty big and left me very full after my lunch. I also had some of my friend's peach and mint tea and chai latte and they were both very refreshing and not too sweet! I want to try their oat milk horchata latte next time, because they ran out of decaf espresso yesterday. The cafe is a bit loud and plays party music, so it's not the best to study at if you love silence. I ordered from Snack pass so pick up was super easy. I got a large iced oat horchata matcha with light sweetener. I did notice they charge extra for milk substitute, so this choice was ideal for me since it was already oat milk and the same price! I typically don't like my drinks very sweet and getting light sweetener was a good choice, it was still pretty sweet for me so I imagine full sugar would be very sweet! Food: Food is always good, but they were a little skimpy with the avocado on the salmon lox bagel. When I went a few months ago I was able to swap the cream cheese out for avocado and they put about 1/2 an avocado in there. But this time I said no cream cheese and added avocado for $2, and it was maybe 2 slices of avocado broken up :( was a bit disappointing for a $18-19 sandwich but other than that we've always enjoyed the food and drinks here. Their thai tea tastes really strong and authentic and their matcha is good too. I'm not a big coffee fan so I can't speak on theirs but the dulce de leche one I tried was pretty good. I really wanted to give this spot 5 stars, but I think it more deserves 4. It's fairly new I believe, and I think the new owners are doing a great job. I came around 11am on a weekday and it wasn't too busy though there was definitely a good amount of people already seated. I was lucky enough to find a table to work at. I ordered a jalapeno cheddar bagel with egg and an oat horchata cold brew. The bagel was really good, but the egg lacked seasoning so it didn't feel too much like a complete sandwich. The oat horchata cold brew tasted really good for the first few minutes but once the ice melted it got quite watery fast. It was still a good drink, though. The staff is super friendly which I really appreciated and I do love the spacious seating area. Service was fast, but they also don't have AC which can be a little frustrating. Though, I would say this is one of the better cafes in the area and I'd definitely come back to try more of the drinks on their menu! read more

Decided to check out this cafe; it's definitely not as well known but still a solid spot. I came here around lunch time to grab food and get some work done and ordered a chipotle chicken panini and matcha latte. Matcha latte--pretty standard taste/pricing. I really liked the panini; flavorful without being overwhelming and chicken was juicy. My only thing is it was rather small for the price. Gold Bean Cafe has become one of my favorite places to study given its proximity to campus and my home. There are lots of seats/tables available, but it may be hard to find a seat around lunchtime. Wifi and charging outlets are conveniently available for study sessions. In terms of the menu, some drinks can be on the pricier side (~$8 for a large Dulce De Leche Latte after tax and operating fee). During my last 2 visits, I tried the Coquito drink which had a strong coconut flavor. This was my first time trying a Coquito drink which I found unique. I also tried the Dulce De Leche Latte which was very sweet with a strong caramel flavor. I wish there were options to adjust sweetness level. Personally, I'd order the Coquito drink again but would not order the Dulce De Leche Latte since it was a little too sweet for my preference. I definitely plan to visit again to study and enjoy the drinks! Heads up, bring noise cancelling headphones if you prefer to work in quieter settings or want to listen to your own music since the music playing on the speakers can be loud sometimes. read more

Very welcoming and nice cafe to grab food or study at for a change of scenery! I've been wanting to try this place and am so glad I did. Love how there are a lot of food options here (for a cafe) and how kind the baristas are. FOOD: 8.5/10 I got the veggie bagel and it was so tasty, filling, and FRESH! I love that they weren't stingy with the cream cheese (you can also opt for hummus/roasted red pepper hummus instead) or avocado! The bagel was pretty standard but was toasted nicely so that it was crunchy on the outside but still soft. For my drink, I tried the Matcha Green Eye, which is a matcha latte with cold brew, lightly sweetened. It tasted kind of like milk tea but a bit more bitter and matcha-y! Definitely a great caffeine boost. The matcha was a little clumpy/sank to the bottom but was also not the worst I've had at a cafe. Overall, the food seemed a tiny bit more pricey compared to what you could get at a bagel shop, but was very fresh and convenient to have at a cafe, so worth it imo! Ambience: 9/10 The cafe was very clean and tidy. Small detail but i liked how they had a napkin holder at every table, which was very convenient lol. AMBIANCE: My gf and I have previously ordered from Gold Bean Cafe on Snackpass and gotten the Oat Horchata Cold Brew and the Vanilla Latte and loved them so we thought we'd stop by for a day of crocheting at the cafe. This was my first time in the place because my gf picked up our order last time. The location is right next to a fairly busy intersection. However, it is well insulated such that noise from outside becomes pretty muffled. We were worried because construction was happening right outside but it was completely ignorable once the door shut behind us. We came on a Friday afternoon mid September and it was surprisingly easy to get a table despite UC Berkeley being flooded with students at this time of the year. SERVICE: Their menu is on display on three large TV screens above the counter. There is also a kiosk where you can order. A lot of their drinks draw on Mexican flavored drinks so expect chocolate and cinnamon! They also have fresh daily baked goods for ~$3 and fresh daily baked ciabatta for their sandwiches. FOOD: My gf and I ended up ordering two bagel sandwiches (both of which can be ordered on the other bread options as well): a BLT and the Famous Egg & Cheese. We also got a Dulce de Leche Latte, a decaf Spanish Latte, and a slice of banana nut bread to share. Our drinks came out pretty promptly and they just called out our order. The sandwiches took a little while longer but the servers were very polite when I went up to pick them up. The sandwiches were beautifully wrapped and packaged and the banana bread was warmed up as well. I've had the Oat Horchata Cold Brew and the Dulce de Leche latte. Normally, I don't go for milky sweets. (For some reason, I prefer fruitier drinks.) But these were both delicious!! I almost reordered the Oat Horchata Cold Brew but switched at the last second because I wanted to try the rest of their menu and I'm glad I did because the Dulce de Leche Latte was so smooth and sweet. The sandwiches were also pretty good. A little pricey for the ingredients but not absurd given the cafe's location. The bagels looked pressed to make eating the sandwich easier. They were also nice and soft despite being toasted instead of tough and chewy like some toasted bagels end up. I had the BLT in a bagel sandwich and it was a tad on the peppery side but overall delicious. My gf forgot her bag of Tapatio packets at home so if you're used to some kind of hot sauce on your egg sandwich beware, there was none here at the self-serve station WORKSPACE: The chairs here are very comfortable! They are backed and curved and very stable. Similarly, the tables are comfortably large which is quite different from most other coffee shops. Two people can easily share a table with both their laptops on them. There are outlets along the wall such that nearly every table is within easy reach of two plugs. The wifi name and password is on display on the glass separating the baristas' kitchen from the work area. There is a password protected restroom for customers only tucked away around the corner. I did not use it so cannot report on the state of the restroom but the sign indicated it is gender neutral and disabled person friendly. read more

A very solid breakfast spot! They have a variety of breakfast and bagel sandwiches, and the spicy chorizo sandwich isn't kidding with the label; it's pretty dang spicy. I've also gotten the veggie bagel sandwich with hummus, and it had a good amount of avocado in it. I also like to get their smoothies. They're a bit more affordable than other smoothie places in Berkeley, so I'd say it costs roughly around the same as a cup of boba around here. I was visiting friends from LA and I've never been in Berkeley before so ofc we were all excited and loud coming into the cafe, yet the workers were so kind and "matched our energies" even though we were kind of annoying.
