There were some purple hairy lettuce that added an interesting texture. It was exactly what I was looking for after a very long flight with subpar airplane food. For the entree, the crab lasagna was amazing. The lasagna had crab blended with caramelized onions, few sheets of pasta, light mozzarella, and a basil cream sauce. I wasn't sure how crab would work in a lasagna, but all worked very well together. For dessert, I got the thin apple tarte. It was like a very good flattened apple pie. The caramel ice cream on top was so comforting -- beats vanilla ice cream on top of an apple pie any day. FYI The staff did not inform me that they charge €5 euros for couple small starters like bread, butter, olives, and a little cup of soup. They just brought them to me without asking. They tasted okay, but next time, I would probably tell them I rather be over-charged on their lobster salad instead.

So good and lots of flavors mixed in this simple and elegant dish. We also splurged and ordered: Jamón Cinco Jotas. You can't go wrong ordering this famous aged cured ham, it's worth every penny. The restaurant itself is conveniently located in the plaza de Santa Ana square, its a little pricey but it's very nice and the servers are attentive. Great for large parties as there are private rooms in the back of the restaurant. The bathrooms are fun and modern, you have to place your foot on the pump located at the bottom for the water to pour out. Cool concept. I would recommend to have a couple of apps and relax in this nice restaurant.

We were the first ones in the door as we are used to eating earlier than the typical Spaniard. :-) We are so glad we found this place! It was also well decorated inside and felt very welcoming. After spending several hours at the Reina Sofia, Jamie W and I were feeling quite peckish and…read morerather indecisive about where to have lunch. We guessed many options around the Prado area might be tourist traps. Fortunately, this didn't appear to be one of them as it's a taberna that attracts local regulars as well as tourists like us. The manager/owner looked to know quite a few customers. It was pretty busy, so we were seated at a hi-top table in the bar area next to other non-Spanish, English-speaking customers. There were many small-to-medium tapa plates to consider in their menu. We weren't looking to stuff ourselves, so we ordered the 6,9€ half-order of Chiporones à la Plancha, which was grilled baby squids nestled on a mixed salad drizzled with balsamic (Photo 10). Our second dish was the 6,1€ half-order of Parrillada Verdu. It was a simple but satisfying grilled vegetable platter of sliced tomato,, onion, and root veggies (Photo 9). The last dish we ordered was an unexpected taste of home, the 9,9€ Ensalada Cesar. The reason for the higher price point was the addition of chicken and bacon to the lettuce, tomato, cheese, croutons, and Caesar dressing (Photo 8). The combination was pretty hearty and familiar-tasting. Even though we probably ate enough for a mid-afternoon meal, I couldn't help but inquire about the availability of grilled octopus (pulpo) because we saw it look quite tempting on a neighboring table. It was just as well that they were out because we didn't have room in our bellies for that. Our tapas selection was just fine all on its own. FOOD - 4 stars...skilled execution of familiar tapas, pretty tasty AMBIANCE - 4 stars...compact but cozy taberna, crowds quickly at lunch SERVICE - 3.5 stars..,efficient though a tad brusque because it was busy TOTAL - 4 stars...a serious dining option close to the museums RELATED - Exploring Madrid?
