Our guide recommended El Paraguas to us. It was fantastic! The outdoor setting is very comfortable. The service was impeccable. We shared all the dishes, salad and two mains. Sadly, I only have one photo, 1/2 of the grilled veal tenderloin. The green salad was well dressed, fresh and crisp, butter lettuce, tomato carrot, onion. We split the Asturian stew, classic version. Wow, delicious, white beans, chorizo, sausage and pork in a tomato broth. We finished with sharing the veal. Tender, well seasoned, just terrific. I would highly discourage anyone from eating at El Paraguas while visiting Madrid, despite the oddly high ratings. Clearly the customers who have reviewed this restaurant do not understand what good food actually tastes like. El Paraguas does serve some excellent scallops, and that's about the end of my compliments. The fish entrees are only decent, the appetizers are atrocious, and the sorbet arrives completely melted like it's a drink. Our confirmation email from the restaurant clearly stated that we were confirmed for 7:00 p.m., but upon our arrival they claimed our reservation was for 8:00 p.m. (even after showing them their own email). The hostess acted like she didn't enjoy working there anyway. Beyond paying high prices for mediocre food, the service is absolutely horrible! At least three waiters acted like they didn't really want to be there, and the service was a reflection of that. Patrons paying these prices deserve excellent service and that did not happen. Even from the beginning after being seated, we waited 30 minutes before anyone even arrived to take our order, and that should never happen in an upscale restaurant. The water glasses went empty at least six times, and that's a cardinal sin in a nice restaurant. Servers are typically trained not to let that happen. Eating became very uncomfortable with nothing to wash down the food. At other pricey restaurants in Spain, the water glasses didn't go empty even once. The wait staff speaks less English than our hotel housekeepers, so that was a struggle, and especially strange since there were predominantly Americans and Canadians in the restaurant. Just avoid this experience altogether and pick a different restaurant. It's our #1 disappointment of any restaurant in Europe! read more

This is one of the best restaurants in Madrid for a reason. For starters it's in a great area. Second, the group that runs this restaurant has multiple successful restaurants in Spain. The restaurant itself is very charming. whether you sit inside or outside, you feel like you are in a house. The place has rooms throughout and is extremely busy and lively in a good way. We were a large group so we sat in a private room with an oval table that made us feel at home. The service is top notch from start to finish. Most of the dishes we had were seafood except for the Asturias bean stew which we just had to try and it was a hit. We had so many dishes that it would take too many paragraphs to describe so I will focus on our favorites. For starters, The creamy foie-gras and tomatoes with artisan burrata were delicious. Texture and flavor on point. They have several Monkfish dishes. I would recommend ordering one whichever way you prefer. All of their fish dishes in general are masterfully prepared to provide the right combination of texture and flavor. They started off by giving us a Gazpacho de fresa: not my thing, I prefer the original flavor. Definitely try the mushroom appetizer, it was delicious ! The arroz negro is also very good. I would recommend this place for lunch and likely dinner. It is on the higher end side, plates ranging between 25-40 euros each. Only negative comment- The have put the menu codes on their hand sanitizer bottles. I absolutely hate this! We were staying in the Salamanca area and our hotel made us a reservation at this restaurant. A lot of places start serving dinner around 9 pm in Madrid, but we were looking for an earlier dinner spot and this place gave us an 8 pm reservation. They have a beautiful outside area, which is where we requested to sit and the inside looks like a typical formal restaurant. We both ordered a sea bass and shared their tomato and burrata salad. The food we got was excellent especially the sea bass however it was a little on the pricier side, which is typical for that area and cuisine. The only reason I gave it 4 stars was because the service was a little slow and they gave us an outside table with the precondition that we be done by 930 because they had another reservation coming then so it felt more rushed than it had to be due to the slow service. However, in general, I've found the service in European countries tends to be slower anyway compared to America perhaps because they don't work on tips. read more

We had to wait 15 minuets before we were seated in the entrance area and we were in the way of the servers. It was very awkward. We were seated in a back room that definitely needs a face lift. Carpet is old and worn as well as the chairs. Absolutely no ambience. I ordered a special of the day a crab bisque. It was a fishy, brown broth that I could no even eat. Next was the Chileans Sea bass. The fish was fresh but was in a heavy oily liquid. We were not even asked if we wanted more wine and had to track down a waiter to pay the bill. read more

Perfect from start to finish and the best meal of our weeklong vacation. The service was attentive, the patrons were well dressed (surprising number of suits in our area) and the atmosphere was quiet and subdued (there are multiple rooms in this restaurant and I can't vouch for the other areas). The meal began with a foam gazpacho amuse with fresh lobster that was hard to fathom and my appetizer of burrata on shaved tomatoes held together unlike anything I've had at most restaurants. I would highly recommend the steak with black truffles and try to leave room for the coffee cake with marscapone cheese which would hold its own with any tiramisu we've ever tried in Italy or the states. The food was competent but not innovative or exciting or even interesting. The buffalo and tomato was tasty but enormous, suited for two. The clams w/ pasta was bland. And one impressive thing for service -- we frankly were waiting a bit to order desserts, with a waiter who had temporarily disappeared, and had the "where did our waiter go" look at the table. The hostess noticed, I guess couldn't find the waiter, but someone else (the manager?) came over, took our dessert orders, and with no prompting said they would be there in one minute.
